Chaplin wrote, directed, and starred in this spoof of Hitler and Mussolini. An occult thriller in which Hitler tries to hire Doctor Zodiac, a Hungarian astrologer and psychologist, and an independently wealthy nobleman, to be his personal astrologer.         A Set of Eight China Dinner Plates with Black and White Wildfowl Designs by Lynn Bogue Hunt, with His Explanatory Legends on the Back

n.p, ca. 1940 - On November 3, 1943, Lynn Bogue Hunt wrote to Eugene V. Connett, founder, proprietor, and, in 1942, liquidator, of The Derrydale Press: ".I have been decorating highball glasses, plates, and doing porcelains for a couple of years and with considerable success on a royalty basis". Looking at these exceptionally attractive and interesting plates, it is easy to see why. Hunt's ducks, pheasant, quail and other species are vigorously depicted in flight, with Hunt's caption and signature included on the front surface. On the back of each plate is shown a pair of the subject birds and a lengthy description (about 125 words) of their characteristics and habits, lettered and signed by Hunt. Despite numerous attempts by various practitioners, sporting art does not always translate well to other media, but with these plates Hunt has successfully combined form and function with elegance and style. A BEAUTIFUL SET (HUNT, LYNN BOGUE) 6-1/4 inches in diameter. . These plates have been used to dine from, and there are occasional minute scratches, but they are fine overall, and ideal for display [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. A suite of proofs of the eight line engravings by Stephen Gooden for this book

London: Done for the George G. Harrap Co. limited edition of 125 copies, 1940 - Stephen Gooden (1892-1955) was the most accomplished line engraver of his time. He illustrated a number of books, among them the Nonesuch Press Bible, the Rubaiyat, the Fables of La Fontaine, George Moore's The Brook Kerith, and Aesop's Fables. In addition, he produced a notable series of bookplates, including a number for The Royal Family, and was the official designer to the Bank of England. Because his work invariably appeared in limited editions, which restricted the public's access to his work, he is not as well known--particularly in America--as he deserves to be, but his work is unsurpassed Four proofs measure 6 x 4 inches, four are various smaller sizes; all have generous margins. . Fine condition. All eight proofs are signed and dated in pencil, lower right margin. Campbell Dodgson 121-128 [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Shallow bruise across top edge of boards, slight darkening at edges, otherwise a very good copy, in good, somewhat darkened and chipped dust jacket. First edition. A presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endsheet to the noted theatre critic: "To Leonard Lyons Greetings: William Saroyan Xmas 1940". Mounted on the front paste-down endsheet is a t.l.s. ("Bill", 1 1/4pp, 4to, 1821 15th Avenue, San Francisco, 31 May 1941) from Saroyan to Leonard Lyons, which reads in part: "I have been enjoying a lot of loafing in Fresno - and San Francisco too - and the idea of sitting at a typewriter has been very remote in my mind . It seems like every time we get all set for the big poker session something happens, but next visit I hope we'll all make it. In the meantime if you see the Judge, give him my best. The same for Mr. Lewis (Red); did you notice the way Kronenberger filched Lewis's remark from your column? About my plays? Well, I answered Kronenberger's piece, but PM didn't print it. Heck, it's O.K. . Did you read about the mouse in the Brooklyn courtroom that tried to eat the shoe of a reporter? And have you noticed the interest in many magazines in hummingbirds? I have a story about one hummingbird in the current issue of Harper's Bazaar."

        Notholirion campanulatum.

Dulau & Co. Ltd. / The Royal Horticultural Society. [London.] [ 1940]. - Handcolored lithograph, sheet size approximately 21 3/4 x 14 3/4 inches, matted to 25 3/4 x 18 inches. Area of the print that was exposed in the mat opening has evenly toned; otherwise very good, clean condition with bright color. This handcolored lithograph was published with Part VII of the Supplement to Henry Elwes 1880 Monograph of the Genus Lilium. This important botanical monograph highlights the extraordinary wealth of China and surrounding countries in the species Lilium. As Elwes' friend and collaborator Arthur Grove states in the introduction to the Supplement: "When Elwes prepared his Monograph about fifty species of Lilium were known to exist, and it was then the general opinion among experts that few remained to be discovered. With his customary acumen, Elwes himself expressed the view that 'The only regions from which much novelty can be expected are the Eastern Himalayas and the immense tract of unexplored and difficult mountain country which surrounds our Indian Empire on the north and east, and which lies round the head-waters of the Irrawaddy, the Bramputra, and the Yang-tse-kiang.' These words were written in 1880, some years before the botanical exploration of Western China began, and Elwes proved a wiser prophet than he knew. At that time, however, no one in England suspected that the area indicated by him was soon to prove richer in lilies than either Japan or Western North America." The first 7 parts of the Supplement were issued between 1933 and 1940. These were limited to 250 copies with a total of 30 handcolored plates drawn and lithographed by Miss Lilian Snelling. The large folio size is used to great advantage to showcase this stunning bloom, with botanical details at the lower left. The habitat of this lily is noted in the text (supplied in facsimile) as being Western China, north-west Yunnan and Northern Burma.

For Whom the Bell Tolls - Ernest Hemingway - First Edition

Charles Scribner's Sons 1940 - A very good FIRST EDITION of Hemingway's best novel, FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS, published in 1940. It tells the story of Robert Jordan, a young American in the International Brigades attached to a republican guerrilla unit during the Spanish Civil War. As a dynamiter, he is assigned to blow up a bridge during an attack on the city of Segovia. Hemingway biographer Jeffrey Meyers writes that the novel is regarded as one of Hemingway's best works. This FIRST EDITION bears the 'A' on the publishers page indicating FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING. The dust jacket is a First Edition jacket but not the first printing jacket. All in all a very good copy of this landmark work by one of the giants of American literature. Check out the photos. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

1940 1940 - 54 x 33 cm, Links unten monogr. u. dat. FM 1940. 3000 gr.
