        Under the Greenwood Tree

      London - Macmillan and Co Ltd, 1940. London - Macmillan and Co Ltd, 1940 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First edition. A beautifully illustrated edition of Thomas Hardy's novel. First edition thus. illustrated with many wood engravings by Clare Leighton. This work was Hardy's second published novel, the last to be printed without his name, and the first of his great series of Wessex novels. Whilst Hardy originally thought of simply calling it The Mellstock Quire, he settled on a title taken from a song in Shakespeare's As You Like It (Act II, Scene V). Clare Veronica Hope Leighton (1898 - 1989) was an English/American artist, writer and illustrator, best known for her wood engravings. Over the course of a long and prolific career, she wrote and illustrated numerous books praising the virtues of the countryside and the people who worked the land. During the 1920s and 1930s, as the world around her became increasingly technological, industrial, and urban, Leighton portrayed rural working men and women. In the 1950s she created designs for Steuben Glass, Wedgwood plates, several stained glass windows for churches in New England and for the transept windows of Worcester Cathedral, England. Condition: In a cloth covered binding. Externally, generally smart with slight sunning to rear board. Internally, firmly bound, bright and clean but with slight browning to endpapers. Overall: NEAR FINE.

        Bacheller, Irving ALS / Autograph Letter Signed, to Richard Lloyd Jones / tipped in to copy of D'ri and I

      Self-published, Winter Park, FL 1940 - Winter Park, FL: full-page autograph letter signed (ALS) by Irving Bacheller, written to his friend Richard Lloyd Jones, a conservative journalist and long-time editor of the Tulsa (OK) Tribune (Bacheller was himself a journalist as well as a novelist, and was the founder of the first modern newspaper syndicate in the United States), and dated February 3rd, 1940. See scan: 8" x 6" letterhead stationery bearing Bacheller's address in Winter Park, Florida; the stationery is four-fold, but is written on only on the first of four sides. The condition of the letter is Fine, though of course it was folded for mailing, and is now tipped in to Jones' copy of one of Bacheller's most popular novels, "D'ri and I", which bears Jones' (presumed ownership) signature. Its condition is otherwise fine. The book is itself an unremarkable Grosset copy, and is ex-lib from the Tulsa Public Library, though in stout and sturdy condition. The letter shows close friendship and anticipated local arrival of Jones; it closes with a limerick of imperfect meter but good humor, on a topic - Mormon polygamy - which was presumably, in some way, of significance to either the writer or the recipient. The Bacheller letter has been professionally examined and authenticated; Jones' signature has not, through lack of exemplars, but it is an unlikely one to have been forged. l46n [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        Tryst for a Tragedy

      London: published for The Crime Club, by Collins, 1940. London: published for The Crime Club, by Collins,, 1940. Octavo. Original red cloth, titles to spine in black. With the dust jacket. Very slight discolouration along top edge of boards, extremely faint spotting to fore-edge and some early leaves, with a rust-spot going from the front pastedown, through the jacket front flap and the front free endpaper, to the half title, otherwise an excellent copy in the striking, lightly rubbed jacket. First edition, first impression. Inscribed on the front free endpaper, "Maud Lang (from the authoress)" and includes, laid in, an autograph letter signed from the author "At Raven's Croft" (her boarding school, to which this book is dedicated, and which was evacuated to Thurlestone Hotel, in Devon, during the war) to the "Mrs Lang & Dorothy", dated Nov 6th [1940]. Her letter complains humorously, "It is a silly sort of life - the combination of boarding school + luxury hotel is even more fatuous than the establishments separately!", but goes on in a more serious tone: "There is just no one to 'talk' to here. I expect Dorothy remembers red-headed Mae, who played bridge with us sometimes. He was one of my oldest friends + was killed fire-fighting in September. Most of my other friends have been bombed or burnt out of their homes. What a sickening insanity it all is." Rare in any state (OCLC lists holdings in only 4 libraries worldwide, and only one copy has ever surfaced at auction), but especially so thus.

        White Collar: A Novel in Linocuts

      [San Francisco, CA]. [San Francisco, CA], [c.1940]. Second printing. Paperback. Quarto [27 cm]; black wrappers with title printed in white on backstrip, illustration printed in white on front panel. Very good/very good. In the uncommon jacket. & & Introduction by Rockwell Kent. Epilogue by John L. Lewis. A classic from the Great Depression much in the style of early Ward or Masereel. First published privately just prior to World War II, White Collar has remained a biting critique of the powers that be, and at the same time championing the working class. This book is uncommon in any edition. & & "White Collar was to be my contribution to, what I believed then, an indispensable understanding of the necessity of unity among all American workers and voters. I was not a writer, so illustrations in sequence were I thought the answer. I had a printing press and lots of linoleum to use for linoleum cuts, so I set to work the idea of doing the entire job myself. I was young, naive and in a hurry, but I soon discovered that a book, a story, an ideal, each is a slow process, even with some help from the family. It took several years to engrave, print, bind and distribute a boom that was seen by a very few people who did not need convincing." -Giacomo Patri, June 1975.

Spine and board edges faded, endpapers and edges slightly foxed, in the jacket that has some nicks and chips to the extremities, a short closed tear at the foot of the rear panel, and tape repairs to the verso. A good copy. First edition, first impression, preceding the American edition by three weeks and with different contents. A collection of short stories told to members of the Drones Club. Opening with four tales of the misadventures of Bingo Little, now happily married to best-selling novelist Rosie M. Banks, with a variety of scrapes as he strives first to find a job and then to get it back when his boss Purkiss, quite justifiably, fires him. Following these, Wodehouse sparkles with Anselm Gets His Chance, featuring a young curate, a stolen stamp collection, and a secret engagement. The remaining stories feature one with Freddie Fitch-Fitch and three with Stanley Ukridge.

        Porträt von Julius Paul Junghanns - Öl auf Leinwand, doubliert auf Hartfaserplatte;

      um 1940 / 1950.. Original-Ölgemälde mit glänzendem Firnis; dargestellt ist der Düsseldorfer Tiermaler Julius Paul Junghanns; Brustbild im Halbprofil; oben rechts signiert: "R Weber W." (das W. etwas kleiner und schwächer hinter dem Namen); verso handschriftlich bezeichnet: " Prof. Junghanns, Akademie Düsseldorf". [39 x 47 cm, Hochformat] ohne Rahmen; die Leinwand wurde vom Künstler selbst auf die Hartfaserplatte aufgezogen, da sich auf deren Rändern die selben Farben finden; guter Zustand.. Julius Paul Junghanns (* Wien 1876, + Düsseldorf 1958), Tiermaler, Schüler von Heinrich von Zügel, 1904-1945 Professor für Tier- und Freilichtmalerei an der Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, einer der bedeutendsten Tiermaler des 20. Jahrhunderts. // Das Bildnis zeigt den etwa 70jährigen Junghanns mit Brille im schwarzen Anzug und roter Fliege vor grünem Hintergrund. Es ist das Werk eines professionellen Malers. Ob sich hinter der Signatur einer der gelisteten Künstler verbirgt, konnte von uns nicht festgestellt werden. Ein Zettel auf der Rückseite nennt den österreichischen Landschaftsmaler Rudolf Weber (* Wien 1872, + Krems-Stein 1949), allerdings ist der Zettel noch recht neu und wahrscheinlich eine ungesicherte Zuschreibung. Mit etwas Phantasie läßt sich das "W." hinter der Signatur auch als "65." lesen (wegen des abschließenden Punktes aber unwahrscheinlich), was dann mit 1965 auf ein postum erstelltes Porträt schließen ließe oder mit 1865 das Geburtsjahr des Malers bezeichnen könnte. Auf Anfrage senden wir Ihnen gerne ein jpg-Bild der Signatur.

        6 Songs for Democracy: Discos de las Brigadas Internacionales

      NY: The Music Room [Keynote Recordings, Inc.], ND, [Ca. 1940]. NY: The Music Room [Keynote Recordings, Inc.], ND, [Ca. 1940]. Hardcover. Very Good. Three 10 inch 78 rpm records housed in card sleeves, cloth backed illustrated boards. Front joint split , bottom edge of front board worn, otherwise a nice examle of this set with the records in fine condition, but lacking the booklet. Inscribed and signed by Robeson on the inside of the front board thus: "These songs of the Spanish struggle Deeply reflect the spirit of Democracy. That spirit like Joe Hill 'never died,' This album is a 'must.'". Though by general concensus, the inscription is generic, still an intersting piece.

        Stag at Bay (Two scripts for the play and unproduced film)

      N.p. N.d., N.p. - Two scripts for "Stag at Bay" by Charles MacArthur and Nunnally Johnson, from Johnson's estate. Johnson was a screenwriter, director, and producer, and highlights of his 40 year career include "The Grapes of Wrath" (1940), "The Three Faces of Eve" (1957), and "The Dirty Dozen" (1967). Womanizing screen idol Bart Starling escapes from the Lazy Meadows Health Farm, where he has been sent to dry out by his agent, and shows up at an all-girls boarding school hoping to reconcile with his long-lost daughter, a meeting that is complicated by his interest in the school's statuesque physical education teacher, Helga. Draft script for the stage play by Johnson and MacArthur. The play, based on two incidents in the life of John Barrymore, was slated for a Broadway debut, staring Frederick March and Ingrid Bergman, in 1942 but was canceled when Barrymore died. Johnson and MacArthur continued to revise the work until MacArthur's death in 1956. The play was considered lost until it was discovered among MacArthur's papers at Florida State University, where it debuted in 1974, and subsequently gone on to a number of repertoire and off-Broadway productions. Blue studio wrappers printed with logo of the William Morris Agency, noted as copy No. 19, undated but circa 1956. Title page present with credits for screenwriters Nunnally and MacArthur. 113 leaves, mechanically reproduced. Pages Fine, wrapper Near Fine, internally bound with three gold brads.Draft typescript for an unproduced film, with a couple of brief notations by screenwriter Johnson, based on the play by Johnson and Charles MacArthur. While this script is the same story as the play Johnson collaborated on with MacArthur, the dialog is completely different, and it is clearly a screenplay rather than play script. Given that the script is dated from the time after MacArthur's death when the play was lost, and that credit on the screenplay is for Johnson only, it is likely that this script represents a solo attempt by Johnson to rewrite and revive the material for the screen. Black studio wrappers, with a printed label noting the film title and with credit for screenwriter Johnson. Title page present, carbon, dated June 1964, with credit for screenwriter Johnson. 143 watermarked leaves, typed, with notations throughout. Pages Fine, wrapper Near Fine, internally bound with three gold brads.Complete collation available on request. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        Eigenh. Brief mit U. ("Schröder").

      Bad Hofgastein, 13. IX. 1940.. 1 S. Gr.-4to. Beiliegend eine faks. Dankeskarte und ein eh. adr. Kuvert.. An Friedrich Herrmann, Herstellungsleiter beim S. Fischer Verlag in Berlin, über Korrekturen bei der Drucklegung seines Buches "Die weltlichen Gedichte": "[...] Auf Seite 450 sind versehentlich die vorigen Korrekturen alle nicht durchgeführt [...] Die Rückkorrektur auf Seite 453 ist beabsichtigt. 'Lebendig strebende' steht oppositionell zu 'Welle', was zwar nicht ganz durchsichtig aber jedenfalls sinnvoller ist wie die Fehlkorrektur 'strebender'. Auf Seite 457 war ein falsches 'euer' noch falscher in 'eure' korrigiert. Jetzt ist's richtig [...] Hier ist es schön, gesund u. vor allem bombenfrei. Ich denke mit Mitgefühl der armen Berliner [...]". - Auf Briefpapier mit gedr. Briefkopf; Papierbedingt leicht gebräunt und mit einem kleinen Ausriß in der rechten unteren Ecke.

      Three volumes - one dedicated to each time period. Ever so lightly dusty top-edge of text block otherwise a thoroughly fine set in same dustwrappers. Each Volume is limited to 100 copies. All signed by Jim Whitaker. Volume one has a photograph of Jim Whitaker and wife Margaret and a letter from himself inserted loosely in the front of the book. Scarce set. James’ (Jim Whitaker - Peregrine Books) interest in birds began as a birds’ nesting schoolboy (around 1940), and with other like-minded boys he began to collect eggs. These books recount his exploits over the 40 years between 1950 and 1990. Jim is very well known in the field of Oology and has published a significant number of works on the subject. His knowledge on the subject is unparalled.
