[Photo Album]: English Nurse after Dunkirk and in India. World War II

India, 1940. Near Fine. Oblong quarto measuring 9" x 12.5". String-tied green leather over paper boards. Contains 175 black and white or sepia toned gelatin silver photographs measuring between 1.5" x 1.5 and 6" x 10" with captions. Worn edges, tears, and rubbing else very good with near fine photographs.A photo album kept by a British nurse in England and India from 1940-1944. The first page shows photos from the grounds of a hospital in Leatherhead, England. Known as Leatherhead Emergency Hospital it was actually the Royal Blind School which had been requisitioned by King's College Hospital as a "national emergency hospital" for the duration of the war. Here the nurse poses with colleagues and wounded survivors of Dunkirk who sit smiling while in wheel chairs, on crutches, and with some covered in bandages. The weeks of fighting in France lead to the evacuation of the British and sent thousands home to England to be treated for wounds. One photo shows the queen exiting a building of the hospital with a nurse and getting into her car. Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, was known for visiting wounded soldiers throughout the country to boost morale as part for the war effort. In 1941 she was sent to India where she started her time at the Western Ghats. These photos show the splendor of the mountain ranges and jungle and include some hand colored snapshots. She continued to explore the country over the next three years attending the Poona Races, visiting the Bombay museum, and taking a trip to Meerut. Throughout the album it is clear she was interested in honing her photography skills and had a good eye for the art. She captured the locals of the cities she visits while they work and interact with each other. One photo shows a snake charmer performing at the Hotel Cecil in Dehli, another captioned, "New Camel, New Wife" shows a recently married couple atop a camel. Women in Kashmir are seen in colorful clothing holding their babies, another photo shows a young man making papier-mache bowels, another shows a group captioned as "prisoners" being marched away. In Meerut she took numerous photos of the wild life and included a photo of a graveyard built for monkeys. She attended local events including the Hindu, Durga Poojah, and Tibetan festivals and took pictures of the gatherings. One of the most striking images is of a man lounging on a bed of nails in Sadhu. She worked at the Poona (Pune) Barrack Hospital which can be seen towards the end of the album. Here she poses with soldiers from the China-Burma-India Theater recovering from their wounds. There are photos captioned "staff" and "patients" that capture the life at the hospital with smiling men goofing off with the nurses. She also attended a military wedding for an officer in Meerut which included uniformed men holding swords for the new couple to walk through. The final photos show a grave site with a large angel statue and a hand colored photo of a meditating statue of Buddha. An interesting account of a British nurse's time serving on both the home front and in India with the medical corps during World War II, especially interesting for the immediacy of the Dunkirk images.

Water color on Autograph Letter of Ninon Hesse, in German, 4 pages on one 8vo sheet, n.p., March 17, 1940

      - Hesse's pastel colored painting depicts a charming pink house situated among trees and shrubs against a blue mountain background, approximately three square inches. The drawing takes up half of the letter's first page which is folded along the lower black ink outline of the acquarelle. Ninon Hesse, an art historian and Hesse's third wife, authenticates the water color. "The acquarelle in the letterhead was painted by Hesse. Sometimes he gives me this kind of stationery." The bulk of her letter relates to wartime conditions. "I am desperate because since March 1 I am not permitted anymore to send food parcels to my aunt. I was so glad to do something for her and now it's over. Several other people are also affected by this new regulation which - from a Swiss point of view - is justified. Oh, if my aunt and Grete could soon emigrate to America! I am very depressed on account of Finland and since this morning completely hopeless because of Romania's political New Orientation." . Her reference to Finland may be to its signing a short-lived peace agreement with the Soviet Union in March shortly before she wrote this letter, and her reference to Romania likely refers to its support of Germany. Hesse and Ninon lived in Switzerland at the time of this letter. She ends her letter on a bright note with a brief anecdote about giving up free movie tickets. Condition: visible folds at slight crimping at top center above watercolor not affecting drawing.

Cornelius Louis André Roosevelt (1879-1962), a distant relative of Theodore Roosevelt, was a French-born American entrepreneur, filmmaker and resort hotel manager. Something of an adventurer he went to Bali in 1924 with the notion of opening it up to tourist while at the same time preserving its cultural integrity. Together with Armand Denis he shot Goona-Goona - An Authentic Melodrama which after its release in the U.S.A. in 1930 started an American craze for Bali. He is also well known for the1938 film Beyond the Caribbean. In 1936 he went to Quayaquil, Ecuador, intending to head an expedition into the headwaters of the Amazon in an attempt to locate descendants of the Inca empire who disappeared after the Spanish conquests. The photographs are of the Ecuadorian landscape, its native people, churches, industrial sites, etc.Very good indeed. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Aunt Beardie

Harrison-Hilton Books New York 1940 - First Edition. Unsigned dustjacket art but likely Arthur Hawkins Jr. Extremely scarce Hubin listed mystery by Shearing, better known as 'Marjorie Bowen'. "Two young girls fleeing from terrorism in the France of 1794 are thrown into chance companionship with an unknown young man who escorts them on the voyage from St. Malo. The tale is taken up thirty years later when one of these girls is married to an Englishman of high position, Sir Robert Sherlock, and herself is the mother of a daughter aged eighteen years. A peculiarly sensitive affection exists between these two women, and the daughter, Jenny, gradually became aware that some dark horror from the past is overshadowing her mother's outwardly calm and happy life. This horror finally takes tangible shape; under the most innocent guise, a merciless blackmailer penetrates the peaceful family where Lady Sherlock is adored. Jenny slowly discovers her mother's terrible secret and does not falter from her championship even when this brings her to the point where she has to decide whether or not she will commit murder". Will Cuppy wrote in a contemporary review: "The Shearing cult will get their tummy full of his special qualities in Aunt Beardie, certainly one of his most sinister novels, one that is built on a firm mystery foundation." Near Fine in Very Good price-clipped dustjacket, shallow chipping at spine ends and flap corners, small abrasion at lower mid-spine. 0.0 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        The Witch in the Wood

Collins, London 1940 - 1st impression. 14 x 20.5cm pale green cloth and green stamped label and titles to the spine, top edge green, bottom edge uncut, 281pp. Together with original unclipped jacket showing 8s. 6d. price. There is some slight spotting to the very edges of the boards and a 1cm scratch to the spine. Internally, the book is without inscriptions, names or bookplates but does have some spotting, heavier to the first few and last few pages and around the edge of the text block, but there are occasional light marks throughout. The somewhat rubbed dust jacket has some loss to the spine tips extending to a maximum of 1cm and continuing round to the front and back edges. There is also a loss of 2cm x 1cm towards the bottom of the spine and some loss to the corners extending to 1.5cm. There are splits along the shoulders and some taper repairs to the verso of the jacket. There are also a couple of closed tears, one of 4cm extending from the chip at the top of the front shoulder onto the front panel, measuring 4cm and a couple of small tears, the largest being 1cm to the bottom of the front panel. The jacket is now protected in a clear removable jacket. All in all a very good minus copy of the second of White's Arthurian novels and arguably the most difficult to find.       [London?]: [Cecil Beaton], [ca. 1940s or '50s]. Very good +. Thick card measuring 12" by 9.75" with affixed gelatin-silver print (9.5" by 7.75" approx.). SIGNED by Beaton underneath photo (very faded); with stamp reading "Cecil Beaton / Photograph" to verso. Aside from faded signature, about near fine, with some wear along edges of card; else clean and sharp. Undated commissioned portrait by Beaton depicting a high-society mother and child. Almost certainly photographed and printed at his own studio, as it bears only his proprietary stamp. The landscape background is quite similar to that of Beaton's 1940 portraits of Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother and then-Princess Elizabeth II.

Jubilee: A Cavalcade of the Negro Theatre (The Original Typescript)

Original wraps. Very Good -. The very uncommon 1940 typescript (with a number of pencil corrections in Langston Hughes's hand) of this unpublished and unproduced collaboration between Hughes and Arna Bontemps. Intended as a celebration of the Negro theatre and as a proud addition to the American Negro Exposition (to be held in Chicago from July 4th thru Labor Day 1940 in honor of 75 years of African-American freedom), this Hughes-Bontemps project fell into financial trouble from the outset and was soon scrapped. What started with the noblest of intentions as an inspired recognition of the Negro Theatre and its rich history --and as part of the "Diamond Jubilee" of the Illinois State Fair-- ulrimately embittered Langston Hughes and represented one of the true disappointments of his otherwise remarkable career. The fragile, stapled typescript, on 8 1'2" x 11" paper, shows some wear and offsetting at the covers but is still sturdy and very clean internally, and easily merits at least a VG-. A wonderful piece of unusual African-Americana.

        The Black Album (Ha-albom ha-shahor]

Tel Aviv: The Anti-Nazi League, 1940. Paperback. Very good. Booklet of postcards. 6.5" x 4.25". Complete with all ten postcards. Text in Hebrew, English, and French; postcard captions in English. Minor soiling to the cover. Text and cards are lightly toned. Three of the postcards are separated along their perforations and are laid-in the booklet. This book of postcards published by the Anti-Nazi League of Tel Aviv was a very early-said by some to be the earliest-depiction of Nazi atrocities against the Jews. As noted in the album's introduction, the postcards were intended to publicize Nazi barbarism, "The most tragic thing is that people aren't paying attention to this horrifying information from Poland...that's why the Anti-Nazi League in Palestine took upon itself the task of breaking the apathy of the world community to these events . . . by the representatives of Satan, in an appropriate manner." Each postcard includes the text: "Send this card to everyone you know in the world and participate in the disclosure of the Nazi crimes," and each reproduces a captioned photograph such as "Death in the wake of Hitler," "The work of Nazi hangmen," "The Nazi murderers enjoy themselves," etc. Exceptionally scarce. As of 2017, no other complete albums are for sale in the trade. Rare Book Hub shows only three auction records. OCLC shows four examples are held by institutions; two in the United States and two in Europe, however the two in the United States are identified as later printings.

        [Archive]: Santa and Me!

Kiddie Kandids, 1940. Near Fine. An archive pertaining primarily to a Santa Claus promotion in the 1940s revolving around the classic photo pose of children with Santa. Included are 21 photos measuring between 4.5" x 5.5" and 8" x 10" as well as an informational packet and a map of the United States that shows the cities using the promotion. All items are near fine or better. The photos were provided to department stores by Kiddie Kandids out of St. Louis, Missouri and came with a folder entitled Operation Santa Claus 1948 with an intricate 13-page explanation of how the experience worked. The packet begins with a "who, what, when, where, and how much" for the store to look through. The who and what sections explain that "all the kiddies that come to see Santa at Christmas time will have a natural unposed record of their visit in a good candid flash photograph." It goes on to say "a picture will be taken of every child that visits Santa and the parent will be given the opportunity to purchase it." The photos are to be taken between October and December because they are "of Christmas rather than for Christmas" and thus need to be completed before the holiday itself. Each photo will be 5" x 7" and come with a matching Christmas folder at "one photo for $1, three for $2, or six for $3." The company emphasizes the need for a hidden camera throughout the literature because their goal is to truly capture the magic of meeting Santa through a candid photo. "The camera will be concealed in a stand. The child approaches by steps, ramp, or passage-way on the opposite side of Santa from the camera (see diagram). As the youngster visits with him, a candid, unposed picture is snapped and the child leaves by exit ramp at the opposite end of the stage or enclosure." The end of the packet includes a diagram for setting up the photo station and ideas for advertising along with a laid in list of the studio's personnel across the country.Included in the material are various examples of previous photos with Santa as well as the photo folders from 1940. The photos show little boys and girls smiling and talking to Santa as well as some with just Santa surrounded by Christmas trees. A few of the photos are hand colored, one of these shows a little blonde girl in a green jacket on Santa's lap excited to tell him her Christmas wishes. The folders are in greens and reds and read, "Look who's here!" and "Merry Christmas." Also included is a negative for an advertisement for the May Company's Santa promotion in Baltimore. Another advertisement is included for Rike's Toyland which reads, "Don't miss Santa in toy wonderland." The company attempted the same concept with a Pilgrim woman, trying to promote a similar idea for Thanksgiving. Ten photos laid in show children sitting with a Pilgrim as well as photos of the woman by herself in costume. That promotion seems not to have been a success. An interesting collection of holiday promotional material focused on Santa Claus photos.

Characteristics of the Rocket Motor Unit Based on the Theory of Perfect Gases

Philadelphia: The Franklin Institute 1940. First Edition. [2], 806 pages. Brown buckram with gilt title and volume numbers to spine panel. Journal of the Franklin Institute, Volume 230 (July-December 1940), entire volume offered. The Malina article is found on pages 433-54.Library bookplate to front pastedown, bindery ticket to front pastedown, ink stamp on page one. Properly deaccessioned. A bright clean copy. Cloth. Frank Malina was an early rocket pioneer whose name is not nearly as well known as Goddard or von Braun, but whose work contributed significantly to advancements in early theory and practice. Among his many contributions, Malina (with Rocket Research Project of GALCIT engineers) developed "red fuming nitric acid (RFNA) and aniline, a propellant combination that achieved great use in American rocketry" (previously Goddard had used liquid oxygen which was hard to handle and store). Malina, with H.S. Tsien continued a "theoretical study of the thermodynamic characteristics of rocket motors", which research was used in 2 American firsts: the first successful American use of solid fuel JATOs (jet assisted take-offs) and a JATO of an American bomber. "Malina made a number of other important contributions to rocketry during his career. With von Kármán, he developed in 1940 the theory of constant-thrust long-duration solid fuel rocket motors. In 1942 he and another associate, Mark Mills, designed and patented a safety pressure relief valve for solid propellant rocket motors. In 1943, with Martin Summerfield, Malina introduced and patented improvements in methods of applying rocket propulsion to flying boats. In 1946 they formulated the 'Malina-Summerfield Criterion' for step-rockets. This criterion stated that each step of the optimum step-rocket has an equal ratio between its payload mass and the total mass of the step-rocket propelling that payload." "As an early pioneer in the field of rocketry and propulsion, Malina made many valuable contributions. His innovations in long-duration propulsion and solid and liquid fuel propellants were particularly important. According to a 1958 letter to Malina from Rear Admiral D. S. Fahrney, U.S.N. (retired), 'It was based on your findings that we produced the first jet propelled guided missile in this country.'" (see American National Biography online for quotation citations) The present work is a further study of the general theory of operation of the constant pressure rocket motor unit, and references work done by Goddard and others. These theoretical studies were undertaken before practical trials were undertaken due to the high costs of building and testing actual rockets. Much of this research resulted in the practical development of solid-fuel rocket motors. Very Good.
