        Three Revealing Typed Letters, Signed

1940. Ephemera Ephemera. Fine. Three typed letters, signed, on Caldwell's full-sheet letterhead, addressed to 'Cap' (Charles A. Pearce of Caldwell's publishers, Duell, Sloane and Pearce). The letters are five to seven lines and each is signed 'Skinny', Caldwell's childhood nickname. The letters serve no business purpose, they are chatty, joke-y notes dashed off in a few minutes, and as such, they are more revealing than Caldwell's more formal, business letters. In the first letter, dated January 22, 1940, and stamped received the next day, Caldwell makes a cruel, sexist attempt at humor, writing in part, 'I've just finished writing letters to every body in the office except you and the swell-looking cunt at the switchboard.' The second letter, dated February 28, 1940, and stamped received on February 29, reads in full: 'I've decided to ask you to give my wife a good talking to when she gets back. Having covered the ground yourself, you'll know exactly what to say. In the meantime, I'm sitting up here drinking coca colas like made.' The third letters is dated March 6, 1940, and is stamped received on the next day. He opens with a line about the Collier's editor and Communist writer Kyle Crichton, who had supported Caldwell early in his career. 'My wife told me,' Caldwell writes, 'to stay away from Kyle Crichton because he was a book-reading, infinitive-splitting old bastard.' A particularly revealing group of letters by the author of Tobacco Road and God's Little Acre. The letters are folded for mailing, else fine. Housed in a quarter-leather folding case.

John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1940 - 1940 Original Hardback Wisden, Ex library

1940. Hi, We recently purchased the Wisdens from the Bolton Library and were pleasently surprised by their condition, they are Ex-Library and have stamps etc to them but they are priced very low so a great way to buy a cheap hardback that may be better than you think. This lot is a 1940 Original Hardback Wisden in Good Condition, Page 353/4 is missing. Otherwise this Wisden is a very good book for an ex library. The boards are a touch dark with the odd mark. The hinges show some weakness and you can see the mesh which is very common for a '40 but they hold their own. Decent Gilt enough. The library factor are : Stamps to a few pages, stamps to page block and a white square fixed to the rear cover. Rock bottom price due to missing page. (Stated on first page).

Four plaquettes, illustrated by Miro, Picasso, Duchamp, and Valentine Hugo

1940. HUGNET, Georges. Complete set of all four "butterfly books," each in original wrappers as issued; oblong 16mo., 95 x 145 mm, in a cloth folding box. Paris: [The Author], 1940-1941. |~||~||~||~| Each of these four pamphlets was clandestinely printed at the beginning of the German occupation and distributed only among close friends of the artist and poet Georges Hugnet (1906-1974), an active figure in Dada and Surrealist circles. The first in this series, "Non vouloir," is one of only 20 copies printed on verge antique, from an edition of just 26 total, it is printed in red and features a reproduction of an illustration by Miró on the title-page verso. The second in the series, "Pablo Picasso," is one of 200 copies printed in brown with black zincographs by Picasso engulfing the text throughout. The third is "Marcel Duchamp," from an edition of 200 copies, printed in blue, features a single print tipped onto the title-page verso, of the "Moustache and Beard of L.H.O.O.Q." -- arguably the cornerstone of Dadaism -- in which Duchamp's original metal stencil was applied in graphite on paper by pochoir. "Like the smile of the Cheshire Cat, Duchamp's graffiti additions to the Mona Lisa now hover in space" (d'Harnoncourt & McShine, p. 304). "The stencil was originally made for the addition of those details to the reproduction of L.H.O.O.Q. in The Box in a Valise" (Bonk, p. 241). The final one "Au 'depens des mots,'" is one of an edition of 200 printed in gold with black accents on the title-page. Each of the butterfly books is a rare survival; together, they form an outstanding group, much like the artists themselves. A rare survivla in immaculate condition.         AGENT OF DEATH: The Memoirs of an Executioner

1940 - Please see any and all photos connected with this listing. No Dustjacket. A bit scuffed but all pages intact and legible. Good reading copy. Clean. No store stamps. --- --- Robert Greene Elliott was the "state electrician" (i.e., executioner) for the State of New York. . .and for those neighboring states that used the electric chair, including New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Vermont, and Massachusetts during the period 1926-1939. --- --- Elliott is credited with perfecting judicial execution by electrocution. He usually made the first contact at 2000 volts, holding it there for 3 seconds. Then he lowered the voltage to 500 volts for the balance of the first minute; raised it to 2000 volts for a further 3 seconds; lowered the voltage to 500 volts for the rest of the second minute; then raised it again to 2000 volts for a few seconds before shutting off the power. Elliott recommended that the ideal amperage for executions was around 8 amps. . . . .His technique was intended to render the victim unconscious, in an instant, with the first massive shock, while the lower voltage heated the vital organs to a point where life was extinguished, without causing undue bodily burning. This oscillating cycle of shocks also seized the heart, causing it to go into arrest and stop beating. He often carried his own electrodes with him, including a head-piece made from a cut-down football helmet, lined with a moist sponge. . . [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Spectre: A Literary Quarterly. Volume I: Number 3

Syracuse University, 1940. Elusive example of this short-lived college literary journal, self-published by Shirley Jackson and her future husband Stanley Edgar Hyman as an alternative to the official Syracuse University literary magazine. In a run of four issues, Spectre satirized the intellectual shortcomings of the student body, championed progressive politics, and stirred some mild campus controversy with its stylized nude illustrations. In this third issue, Jackson and Hyman confront the racial hypocrisy of the university, which refused to house black students on campus: "Marian Anderson sells out every time she comes here, but they won't allow negro girls in the college dormitories. Maybe it's all right if you're no closer than the sixth row." Jackson herself contributes an autobiographical short story, "Had We But World Enough," in which a penniless young couple imagine their future with a combination of longing and dread: "'The hell with you,' she said. 'You think I'm going to have children and ruin my whole life?' They laughed. 'Twenty children,' he said. 'All boys.'" Jackson and Hyman would marry shortly after graduation, and raise four children on her earnings as a writer. Known to her neighbors only as "Mrs. Hyman," the increasingly reclusive Jackson would publish some of the most unsettling fiction ever produced in America, including "The Lottery" (1948), The Haunting of Hill House (1959), and We Have Always Lived in the Castle (1962). All copies of Spectre are rare: aside from Syracuse University, OCLC locates one microfilm copy at Yale. An evocative survival. Quarto, side-stapled dark blue pictorial wraps, beige cloth tape-bound spine. Sixty mimeographed leaves, printed on rectos only, black and white illustrations throughout text. Center crease to front cover and first few pages, shallow chipping and creasing to back cover, text block toned.

The Arab War. Confidential Information for General Headquarters from Gertrude Bell, being Despatches Reprinted from the Secret ?Arab Bulletin?.

1940 - First Edition (number 67 of 500 copies). 8vo. Contemporary quarter Niger. Spine gilt and slightly faded. 51, i pp. Golden Cockerel Press, London, After graduating in Modern History from Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford in 1892, Gertrude Bell engaged in a period of world travel that led to her first experiences of Arabia. With the commencement of the Great War she returned to England and worked in a special branch of the Red Cross, before being called to Egypt to join a team (including T. E. Lawrence) that was engaged in planning the Arab revolt and the creation of the Arab Bureau in Cairo. In 1916, she left Cairo and was employed as an Assistant Political Officer in Baghdad. It was there that she proved to be instrumental in establishing the national state of Mesopotamia (now known as Iraq) and instating Faisal as king. She continued to live in Baghdad until dying quite suddenly in 1926 (at the age of 57); leaving behind a legacy of remarkable service and the Baghdad Antiquities Museum, which she founded in that last year of her life. This book collects previously unpublished reports, written by Bell, that she sent to the Arab Bureau from Iraq. They afford a record of her continued communication with the Bureau and evidence of what Bell considered to be salient subjects and events from her side of the Arab world.         Katzentheater (nach R. Walser) - Ein Schlafzimmer.

Leporello (8, 5 x 6.7 cm, ausgezogen 150 cm) 21 Radierungen (3.8 x 2.5 cm), Leporello in bedrucktem Kart.-Schuber , Umschlag etwas fleckig u. gebräunt. A Speech by the Prime Minister, the Rt. Hon. Winston Churchill in the House of Commons. August 20th 1940.

Baynard Press, August, 1940. [Second World War]. FIRST PRINTING. Slim pamphlet. pp.16. Grey card covers titled in red. A fine copy with the merest toning to extremities and no foxing within (a common fault on this title). A Statement of War Aims; this is the historic address given by Churchill to the Commons, which summarises the second war against German aggression thus far, and touches on the relationship with, and the future role of, the United States in the war effort. The rousing speech is notable for the inclusion of praise for 'The Few', the outnumbered RAF Fighter Command personnel who repelled the might of the Luftwaffe during 'The Battle of Britain', being the first major air campaign to be fought entirely by air forces; "Never in the field of human conflict was so much owed by so many to so few" Woods A60a. PMM 424. This most moving statement of Democracy is likened to Abraham Lincoln's Gettysburg Address.
