Swedish writer Pär Lagerkvist was awarded the Nobel prize for Literature in 1951. Inscribed books by him are scarce, holograph letters very rare.] [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

The Heart is a Lonely Hunter

Boston: Houghton Mifflin Co, 1940. First edition. Fine/Near Fine. A Fine copy of the book, fresh and clean with a small bookseller's ticket on the rear end paper (Marian Hunter, Beverly Hills). In a Near Fine dust jacket with a toned spine, light wear at the extremities and a small closed tear on the rear panel. Despite the defects, a very sharp copy. "The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter," Carson McCullers' masterpiece, is the story of a deaf mute in a small Georgia town. Written when she was 23, the novel became a bestseller and was hailed immediately as a classic. It appears on both Modern Library's list of the 100 best English novels of the century and Time Magazine's list of hundred greatest novels from 1923 to 2005 as well. According to writer Richard Wright, "...the most impressive aspect of The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter is the astonishing humanity that enables a white writer, for the first time in Southern fiction, to handle Negro characters with as much ease and justice of those of her own race. This cannot be accounted for stylistically or politically; it seems to stem from an attitude toward life." The novel was adapted into a 1968 film featuring Alan Arkin, for which he was nominated for an Academy Award. "This is an extraordinary novel to have been written by a young woman; but the more important fact is that it is an extraordinary novel in its own right, considerations of authorship apart." (Saturday Review of Literature). Fine in Near Fine. dust jacket.

"This little book has been produced with the object of filling a vacancy which the author considers has too long existed. Works on the Rothschilds are many, but nearly all these are either purposefully inaccurate or... long and rather dry. This book of mine contains no padding and needs to be read slowly... Trusting that this book may enable others to dispense knowledge of the subject, I now drop this spanner into the wobbling, squeaking, overheated machinery of an outworn democracy, hoping for the best." - from Preface. Sidney Toler (1874-1947) began his acting career on the stage before moving on to early talking films. In 1938, after the death of Warner Oland, who up until that time had been the "face" of Charlie Chan, Toler took over the role until the end of his career in 1947. Sydney Toler was the second actor to portray Charlie Chan and did so from 1938 until 1947, the year of his death. Fine copy and an uncommon signature.

Relations Between Attenuation and Phase in Feedback Amplifier Design

New York: American Telephone and Telegraph Company, 1940. First Edition. Wraps. Near Fine. First Edition. 34 pages. Light blue printed wraps, with three holes punched near the spine (as issued). 8vo. Previous owner's name on back of front wrapper. Light browning to the edges. Wraps. The first separate appearance of this seminal paper, in Monograph B-1239 of the Bell Telephone System Technical Publication series. First published in the Bell System Technical Journal, July 1940 based on a presentation given at an IEEE Symposium on Network Theory in January 1940. This paper, Bode's "best known and most succinct contribution to feedback theory" pre-dates Bode's best known book "Network Analysis and Feedback Amplifier Design" by 5 years, and is the first publication on Bode plots, . It is a seminal work in the field of control theory. "Henry Wade Bode was widely known as one of the most articulate, thoughtful exponents of the philosophy and practice of systems engineering - the science and art of integrating technical components into a coherent system that is optimally adapted to its social function...[Bode] in 1929 transferred to Bell [Labs'] mathematical research group...and specialized in network theory and its application to long-distance communications. His extensive research in this field led eventually to the publication in 1945 of his classic book, 'Network Analysis and Feedback Amplifier Design'...During his carrer at Bell, he was granted 25 patents for innovations in the areas of transmission networks, transformer systems, electrical wave amplification, broadband amplifiers, and artillery computing...Bode received many honors during his career. In 1969 he was awarded the prestigious Edison Medal of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers [IEEE] 'for fundamental contributions to the arts of communication, computation and control and for guidance and creative counsel in systems engineering...With the death of Hendrik Bode, the country and university community lost of of the great engineering philosophers of his time." (Memorial Tributes, National Academy of Engineernig, Vol. 3) While not known to the average citizen, Bode is well known to engineering students for the Bode plot, which allows engineers to characterize a feedback amplifier and it's useful range of operation. Practically speaking, it helps engineers keep systems from operating at the extremes (like the shrill noise we've all heard when someone using a microphone gets too close the speaker broadcasting their words). Like many things, it was born from his need to solve a specific problem, and finding that after a search of the literature nothing practical existed. "As a consequence [ of developing mathematical methods for designing feedback amplifiers to specified tolerances ] it became possible to design reliable vacuum-tube circuitry, suitable for precision applications [in early computers ]." (Engineering and Science in the Bell System, p 353) Tamer Basar's Control Theory: Twenty-Five Seminal Papers (1932-1981), Mindell's Between Human and Machine: Feedback, Control, and Computing Before Cybernetics.

The linocuts are mostly printed in black ink, occasionally in orange. With an introduction by artist and writer Rockwell Kent and an afterward by labor leader John L. Lewis. Paperback. Due to its pro-labor agenda, the school was closed in the 1950s under the pressures of McCarthyism. In 1938, after three years of work, Patri produced this wordless novel. It chronicled the aftermath of the 1929 stock market crash, and was intended to motivate white-collar workers to unionize. Woodcut artist and fellow wordless novelist Lynd Ward reviewed the book in Office and Professional Workers News in 1941," according to a Wikipedia entry. *** This is a collectible copy of a very rare early wordless novel from an artist working at the peak of his skills. Modest rubbing and a trifle foxed in the text, near fine. Copy XXXIX (39) of LX (60) on velin azure de Voiron paper. Inscribed by the author using much of the half-title: "Pour un a tres chere Alice, un certain bleu ciel, anemique et sentimental, n'd-t-il pas toujours ete un saveur dans les Chambres de Hotel, de bon tou? Mais le tendre amitie que je vous porte est meilleur teint, et resiste a l'usage, et ne raint in le chaud l'humidite! Colette" Which translates to something like: "For a very dear Alice, a blue sky, anemic and sentimental, has not the flavor in Chambers Hotel been good always? But the tender friendship I have for you is in better complexion, and resists wear, and resists the moist heat! Colette". The recipient was likely Colette's old friend Alice Benard-Fleury of Toulon, with whom she corresponded during the War years. .

        There Shall Be No Night

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons. 1940. Early reprint. Fine, in supplied, near fine, price-clipped dustwrapper. Full-page Inscription by the author to the subject of this Pulitzer Prize-winning play: "for Katherine Imbrie, who, starting with birth in New Bedford, Mass., has seen and suffered much the same kind of tragedy that comes to Miranda Valhoven in this play -- with all hope for a better world -- Robert Sherwood. January 1, 1941." Laid in is a letter from Katherine Imbrie to Benjamin Fairless, President of U.S. Steel, objecting to the broadcasting of the play on the U.S. Steel radio program in 1950 because of pending legal proceedings concerning "The Imbrie Incident." Attached is a typed memo from Mrs. Imbrie to William J. Walsh, Jr. concerning the proposed radio production of the play. The Imbrie Incident occurred on July 18, 1924, in Tehran, Iran. Then American Vice Consul, Robert Whitney Imbrie along with an acquaintance, Melvin Seymour, were attacked by a mob while visiting a public well in the center of Tehran. Though local police and soldiers were close by, they failed to render assistance and some even participated in the assault. Finally, the two Americans were taken away to a nearby police infirmary for treatment. The mob followed them and continued the attack until they finally killed Imbrie. Seymour was somehow spared. Later, the Persian government executed a lone soldier for inciting the mob against the two Americans (by claiming that Imbrie was a Baha'i, a religious minority persecuted in Iran) and awarded Imbrie's widow $60,000 for the loss of her husband.A quarter of a century later, Mrs. Imbrie was still involved in litigation regarding her husband's accounts. In her memo to Walsh, she wrote: "In answer to my letter objecting to the play Sherwood sent a copy of the book. His preface does not alter the fact that as a ghost writer for F D R he had access to the State Dept files which neither I Members of Congress nor the Attorneys acting for me while my husband's accounts were in litigation [had access to]". .
