Across Asia from West to East in 1906-1908.

Helsinki, Suomalais-Ugrilainen Seura, 1940. - 2 volumes. (30,5x22cm). IV, 741; IV, 54, 16, 48, 36, 36, 12, 6, 30, 12 pp. With numerous illustrations in text, one small map after the preface, and 15 folding maps in the second volume. Half sheepskin, cloth sides. First edition of a travelogue through Asia, written by Carl Gustav Mannerheim (1867-1951), future president of Finland, 1944-1946. In 1906, Mannerheim, then a colonel, was sent on an expedition to Asia. "The object of this expedition was to study conditions in the interior of Northern China, collect statistical materials and perform various tasks of a military nature", says Mannerheim in the preface. Russia wanted to know the state of affairs in China due to the reforms and modernization undertaken by the Qing Dynasty. Besides that, Mannerheim wanted to collect items of scientific interest for the National Museum in Helsinki and to study the little-known peoples living in Northern China. This makes the work, with its numerous illustrations by photographs, an interesting anthropological account as well. The first volume contains Mannerheim's journal with many photographs. The second describes the scientific results the artefacts Mannerheim took with him to Helsinki and, including sculptures, costumes and utensils. - Number 33 out of limited edition of 100 and signed by the author. With owner's inscription of Ewald Henttu on flyleaf, dated 1940. Very good copy; binding slightly rubbed along the extremities. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

      W. Hodge & Comp. Ltd.,, London u.a., 1940 - London u.a., W. Hodge & Comp. Ltd., 1940. 152 S. OLwd. m. OSch. EA in engl. Sprache. Mit einer halbseitigen Widm. an Dr. Robert Eisler, dat. Oxford April 1941. Fleck a. Deckel. Kennedy, Anthony Ludovici, Maximilian A. Mugge, Maude D. Petre, Horace B. Samuel, Herman Scheffauer, G.T. The World Significance of the Russian Revolution". From 1892 in England, he encountered Nietzsche. The 18-volume Nietzsche translation was overseen by him from 1909 to 1913. With the start of the World War I. he returned to Germany, later Switzerland . As his daughter married the bookseller Albi Rosenthal in Oxford, he went back in 1938: "Levy has for many years been the tireless apologist and interpreter of Nietzsche". (Zitat).         Errant Diplomat: The Life Of Franz Von Papen

Edward Arnold, London, 1940. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good Condition/Very Good. COMPLETE WITH SCARCE DUST JACKET. 'Mr. Oswald Dutch has established with Hitler's Twelve Apostles and Thus Died Austria his reputation as a sound and extremely well-informed political commentator; here he provides what is believed to be the fullest and most reliable account of the strange career of Franz von Papen. And what a story it is! A nobleman of wealth and breeding, destined for a life of ease and enjoyment as a Junker officer, he engages in spying and sabotage in America during the last war; contrives to lose half of his secret papers to the British at Falmouth in 1916 and the other half in Palestine two years later ; ousts Bruning and takes his place as Chancellor of the German Reich, only to hand over the position to Hitler in satisfaction of a personal grudge against Schleicher; escapes with his life from the Nazi " purge " of June 30, 1934 ; crops up again to engineer the Austrian Anschluss as ambassador in Vienna, and the Russo-German alliance when ambassador to Turkey. These are some of the high lights in the yet unfinished tale. But even more interesting is the search for a clue to his character and motives. They are a more than unusually strange mixture which go to form this picture of a modern adventurer-ambition, charm of manner, lack of principle, almost incredible carelessness and folly (and yet he is no fool), a passion for intrigue, an uneasy restlessness of soul which seems to find satisfaction only in the precarious balancing of hazards. He is certainly not a genuine apostle of Nazism; perhaps jackal is the better description. For the most sinister feature of his career has been that every one who has so far associated with Papen has been betrayed by him and suffered any calamity from imprisonment to death. His first victim, the famous Captain von Rintelen, writes a preface to this book; the author has no doubt who the last victim will be. The only question yet unanswered is- When?.' Book - in Near Fine orange boards with black lettering - light marking to a small area to the back board and light bumping to the extreme top of the spine. Contents, slight spotting to the extreme page edges otherwise clean, bright and tightly bound. Dust Jacket - Very Good - some slight wear to the extreme ends of the spine repaired to verso, crease to the rear flap, other slight shelf wear to the extreme edges and light browning to the white background to the jacket.         Why England Slept.

New York: Wilfred Funk, Inc, 1940. First edition. Octavo, bound in full blue leather, all edges gilt. The dedication copy of John F. Kennedy's first book, Why England Slept, with Rose Kennedy's embossed name on the front panel. This copy was specially bound for the author's mother, Rose Kennedy and presented to her. This copy brought $52,900 at the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis sale at Sotheby's in May 1996. Housed in a full dark blue morocco clamshell box. Unique. Published the year Kennedy graduated from Harvard, Why England Slept was an expansion of his senior thesis. The title is a variation on the title of Winston Churchill's work, While England Slept, published about two years before Kennedy's. It was dedicated to John's parents, Rose and Joe Kennedy. In this work he attempts to explain why England was so poorly prepared for World War II and why England's leaders settled upon the disastrous policies of appeasement. The book served as a warning to those in our country who felt that appeasing Hitler and staying out of the war was a viable option. It became a bestseller in the United States and went through several printings in its first year. (Newcomb, 10)

John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1940 - 1940 Wisden - Original Hardback

1940. Hi, This lot is a 1940 Original Hardback Wisden in Good to Very Good Condition. For a 1940 this is closer to very good than good, plus it has not had any restoration which is rare as many 1940s (due to their usual poor condition) do. The boards are clean but show some age and darkness , the gilt is starting to fade but original and better than many, more so on the spine than the front. Odd dot mark to the boards. Internally the front hinge is weak and you can see a bit of mesh at the top of the book for 2 inches. Internally the pages are very good. Without restoration. Better than many 1940s. Some weakness at page 32. This hardback was my Nemesis for 3 years and a hard book to find, pretty impossible in very good condition (Im still looking so let me know if you have one). I have an alternative 1940 Hardback if needed, it is a lot cheaper as in a lot poorer condition. Please ask. Please see the large pictures, taken with and without the flash.         The Arab War Being Despatches Reprinted from the Secret "Arab Bulletin"

London: Golden Cockerel Press, 1940. Limited Edition. Quarter Leather. This is a nearly fine copy of the Limited edition of what purports to be the only publication of the inimitable Gertrude Bell's despatches after their initial publication in the Arab Bulletin (which was for internal use only). Gertrude Lowthian Bell (1868-1926) was the intriguing and influential adventurer, scholar, writer, and diplomat who, like her contemporary T. E. “Lawrence of Arabia” did much to frame and shape the Middle East during and after the First World War. Raised amid industrialist family wealth, Bell lost her mother at age three, increasing a “sense of independence and self-reliance” perhaps already inherent to the “physically restless and intellectually gifted” child.  By her mid-twenties the unmarried Bell discovered intellectual and emotional fascination with the Middle East.  “Outstanding literary and linguistic skills” coupled with “determination, bravery, physical strength, and endurance” invigorated contributions to travel literature, translation, archaeology, and architecture, eventually evolving into engagement in the region’s socio-political currents.  By the First World War, Bell became “a voluntary agent of Britain’s interests in the Middle East” and assumed her defining role – as “a woman trying to break one of the most challenging barriers of her time: the physical conquest of the desert and the decoding of the moral and ethical code of its inhabitants.”  (ODNB) One of 500 numbered copies, of which this is number 339, this volume was printed by Christopher Sandford and Owen Ruytter on Arnold's mould-made paper. The binding, which is original, was done by Sangorski & Sutcliffe in quarter green niger morocco, with gilt spine titles, cream colored cloth boards, and top edge gilt. Introduction by Sir Kinahan Cornwallis, Director of the Arab Bureau, 1916-1920. There is a trace of spotting and soil to the cloth sides, otherwise this is a fine copy without the usual foxing of the textblock, and with only faint offseting on the edges from the leather and cloth of the binding. Housed in the publisher's thin and unadorned slipcase, which is worn at the folds and corners and unevenly sunned.

Nason first worked with Robert Frost in the early 1930s on a reissue of the poet's debut collection, A Boy's Will. Both New Englanders with a straightforward yet direct and forceful artistic expression, they were a natural pairing and went on to produce several volumes together including Frost's seminal Collected Poems published by the Limited Editions Club in 1950. Frost regarded Nason as the finest illustrator of his work. At the outbreak of World War Two, a number of prominent art societies in New York formed an association known as Artists for Victory in order to combine their efforts in assisting the war effort and serving their country. The association grew rapidly holding art exhibitions and other events including an exchange exhibition of contemporary art with British artists. At its height, Artists for Victory comprised more than 30 constituent art societies from across the US representing some 10,000 artists including Thomas Nason. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

[New York, 1940. Fine. This wonderful image is a mid-20th-century impression from a plate originally engraved by Charles Stuart in 1839, after a contemporary painting by John Gadsby Chapman. Davy Crockett (1786-1836), frontiersman, Indian fighter, and defender of the Alamo, is an archetypal hero of the early United States. From his activities as a scout for Andrew Jackson during the War of 1812, through his service in the Tennessee legislature and the United States House of Representatives, to his death at the Alamo in 1836, his fame grew ever larger. Chapman (1808- 89) met Crockett in the early 1830s and executed a portrait study of him. Crockett was very conscious of his public image as a frontiersman, and worked hard to foster that image while serving as a Congressman from Tennessee. When Chapman's original painting was done, in 1834, Crockett was contemplating a run for the Presidency in the next election. After Crockett's death Chapman worked the study into a full-length portrait. It was exhibited in the fall of 1838 at the Apollo Gallery in New York, an exhibition space that had been founded by a group of artists including Chapman. That painting was acquired by the state of Texas and hung in the capitol in Austin, where it was later destroyed by fire. Chapman painted another version of the portrait, which now hangs in the Harry Ransom Research Center at the University of Texas in Austin. The present engraving states: "New York. Published at the Apollo, 1839." A catalogue issued by the Apollo Gallery in October 1839 describes an engraved version of the present image. Charles Stuart was a mezzotint engraver working in New York at the same time. In the portrait Crockett stands in his buckskins, looking to his left, his right arm outstretched, holding his broad-brimmed hat. In his left arm he cradles a long rifle, and a knife is tucked into his belt. Three obedient dogs gaze up at him, and he stands in a small clearing with a shock of wheat and some trees behind him. The original 1839 version of this print is so rare as to be unobtainable, and is lacking from most major institutional collections. The last we can trace for sale was one offered by The Old Print Shop on the front cover of the PORTFOLIO, in May 1963 for $200 (this at a time when the major Audubon prints were still in the three-figure range). A striking and lovely image of a central figure in the mythology of America.

Manuscript Archive - Original War Propaganda Documents - Some Air Dropped for Distribution During War Periods

Various - Europe & Asia, 1940. Archive of 77 propaganda documents from the 1940s to 1960s, mainly promoting political and war ideologies, including communism and fascism, but also endorsing and initiating women's liberation, gender equality, and peace campaigns. Countries represented in this collection include Germany, Czechoslovakia, Finland, France, Portugal, the Balkans, Hungary, Greece, China, Japan, India, Indonesia, Ethiopia, and United States of America. Single and double leafs, a wide array of documents of various sizes and languages, in typescript or illustrated print. The smallest document measures 3,5 x 6 cm, and the largest 21 x 33 cm. Occasional age-toning and creasing, otherwise in very good condition, a unique document archive. A fascinating collection of documents distributed in several countries and propagandizing communism, nationalism, solidarity, political protests, also promoting social and feminist movements, civil rights campaigns, and even Gandhi's peace mission. Several are fervently advocating for or against specific political leaders, while some are soliciting political support. Several contain illustrations to incite an emotional response, as is the nature of propaganda. The majority deal with Communism, several being from China and Germany, although numerous nations are represented. Collectively these documents serve to illustrate the widespread impact of Communism throughout the world, and further form a captivating exhibit of the effectiveness and strategy of psychological warfare. Following are examples from the collection: Promoting Chiang Kai Shek (1887-1975), President of the Republic of China, "Generalissimo" in the Red Army, and influential member of the Chinese Nationalist Party Kuomintang (KMT), a full colour illustrates leaflet shows the Ten Day Celebrations taking place in front of the Presidential Office Building in Taipei, Taiwan, over which he presided in 1966. Propaganda against Amintore Fanfani (1908-1999), fascist and corporatist Italian politician, prominent democratic figure, and Prime Minister of Italy. He wrote for the official magazine of racism in Fascist Italy (La difesa della razza), and in 1938, he was among the 330 that signed the antisemitic Manifesto of Race which culminated into the laws that stripped the Italian Jews of any position in the government, university or professions which many previous had. Excerpt from the present propaganda leaf: "Un discorso che oggi Fanfani non vi farà... il fascismo non partì alla conquista dello Stato nel 1922 con un bagaglio dottrinale precostituito ed astratto... - Noi Giovani non crediamo a Fanfani. Voteremo contro la D.C. Voteremo Comunista." [A speech that Fanfani today will make... Fascism did not set out to conquer the state in 1922 with doctrinal baggage and preconceived abstract... - We do not believe in Young Fanfani. We will vote against the CD (Christian Democracy). We will vote Communist.] The oppressive Communist ruled era in Czechoslovakia is protested in a detailed double leaf pamphlet dated April 1954, illustrated, and headed "Free Europe." Intended to inform civilians with facts and statistics, in it the government is described as a deceitful regime that promised public elections for national committees, government parties, and even factory councils, but instead has brought about only social and economic problems. Excerpt: "Ssvobodna Evropa... Rezim si vymyslil politickou kampan: volby závodnich rad, volby Národnich vyboru, sjezd Strany. Stavet pro rodiny, ne pro stat... Dnesni ceskoslovensky rezim stal od unora 1948 pred problemem..." A French Communist Party document which was dropped by Communists over Paris and other cities during local elections in 1949 suggests home security and just tenancy, stating, "Un logis sain pour chaque Français. La Bataille de Loyers... Cette politique gouvernementale antiouvrière rend impossible la solution du problème des loyers... malgré le vote de la loi GRIMAUD, le 1e septembre 1948... Unissez-vous dans l'action communistes, socialistes, catholiques, patriotes et résistants... Le Parti Communiste Français." [A healthy home for every French civilian. The Rent Battle... This anti-workers government policy makes it impossible to solve the rent problem... despite the Grimaud law having been passed on 1 September 1948... Unite in the action of action communists, socialists, Catholics, patriots and resistors... The French Communist Party.] A second propaganda document printed by the French Communist Party makes an impassioned statement against Charles de Gaulle (1890-1970), founder of the Fifth Republic and 18th President of France, calling him a fascist and a conspirator who should be imprisoned. In Alverca do Ribatejo, Portugal, an Aeronautical Festival was held in Support of the National Women's Movement (1961-1974), an advertisement herein being headed "Festival Aeronáutico de Alverca a favor do Movimento Nacional Feminino." An illustrated leaflet dated 1962, with four young women pictured to recto, appears to be advocating the Women's Liberation Movement and women's education in China. A Second World War promotional advertisement for the Greek Hellenic Royal Airforce (EBA), soliciting young men to join for free. A 1954 communiqué from the Ministry of Commerce, Government of Greece, addressed to the residents of remote mountain villages, regarding food parcels which were to be which air dropped to them by the Hellenic Royal Air Force, as the regions had lost use of communications routes due to extreme winter conditions. Contemporary despatch from the Battle of Mindanao, dated 14 March 1945, four days after its start, on two separate leafs, one in Arabic and one in Indonesian script, announcing Japanese bombings, telling civilians that Arabia and Iran are allies, and warn them to stay away from Japanese. A 39 page Hungarian document printed containing the "Secret Speech" of Nikita Khrushchev (1894-1971), made at the 20th Congress of the Soviet Union's Communist Party, in which he vehemently condemned Joseph Stalin's reign and the 'cult of personality' which he fostered. Khrushchev describes a less repressive era of political reform, agricultural and educational projects. This document is titled: "Nyikita Szergejevics Hruscsov Beszéde a XX. Pártkongresszus titkos ülésén, 1956. február 24." Also from Hungary, is a double-sided document printed circa 1954 for the "Nemzeti Ellenállási Mozgalom," the National Resistance Movement which culminated into the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, a nationwide revolt against the government of the Hungarian People's Republic and its Soviet-imposed policies. On delicate rose-coloured paper, Japanese protesters speak against the United States of America and the imminent visit of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. In May and June of 1960 hundreds of thousands of Japanese civilians were engaged in some of the largest demonstrations in the nation's history, which, sometimes called the "Anpo" protests, is collectively considered to be the most significant political crisis of the postwar period. Erupting over the revision of a security treaty between Japan and the United States, titled the "Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security" ten million signed petitions against the treaty, thousands were injured, and one person was killed. The protests forced the cancellation of Eisenhower's planned visit to Japan, and the resignation of Conservative prime minister Kishi Nobusuke. Promoting militant frontier defence of Soviet occupied East Germany, the former German Democratic Republic (DDR - Deutsche Demokratische Republik) which was a state from 1949-1990, this leaf is headed "Gedanke eines Grenzjägers. 20 Jahre Bundesgrenzschutz" [Ideas of a frontier hunter. 20 years Federal. ] A message from Leonid Brezhnev (1906-1982) General Secretary of the Central Committee (CC) of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, made at the Seventh Congress of the Socialist Unity Party Germany in Berlin, 1967, proclaiming Soviet support of the Eastern Bloc state known as the German Democratic Republic during the Cold War. Excerpt: "Immer daran denken... Das Zentralkomitee der Kommunistischen Partei der Sowjetunion und die Sowjetregierung haben mich ermächtigt, von der Tribüne Ihres Parteitages aus nach einmal zu erklären, dass uns die Rechte und die Interessen der DDR..." A communiqué in both Hindi and Urdu dated 13 May 1947 which was air dropped over Jubbulpore by the Royal Indian Air Force during a period of heavy rioting, and which announces the Gandhi-Jinnah appeal for peace. Signed by the two parties, the document denounces use of force for political gain, and great disappointment over "recent acts of lawlessness and violence that have brought utmost disgrace to the fair name of India and the greatest misery to innocent people..." Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated only months later in January 1948. Three documents from Abyssinia in 1941 with extensive text printed in Amharic script, and featuring the iconic lion of Judah. One document has the crowned lion and colours of the Ethiopian Empire's flag of 1897-1974. An ephemeral election advertisement for José Norton de Matos, soliciting votes for the post of President of the Movement of Democratic Unity (a Portuguese democratic organization) of 1949. Portugal was then under the dictatorial rule of the Estado Novo regime. The election was rigged, Novo denying Norton de Matos to freely advertise his message, also denying a close inspection of votes. Norton de Matos withdrew from the election on February 12, 1949. Propaganda is a form of communication, often biased or misleading in nature aimed at influencing and altering the attitude of a population toward some cause, position or political agenda in an effort to form a consensus to a standard set of belief patterns. A form of Psychological warfare (PSYWAR), a term used "to denote any action which is practiced mainly by psychological methods with the aim of evoking a planned psychological reaction in other people," such tactics have also been known as psychological operations (PSYOP), Psy Ops, Political Warfare, "Hearts and Minds," and MISO (Military Information Support Operations). The start of modern psychological operations in war is generally dated to the First World War. By that point, Western societies were increasingly educated and urbanized, and mass media was available in the form of large circulation newspapers and posters. Propaganda was transmitted to the enemy via the use of airborne leaflets or through explosive delivery systems like modified artillery or mortar rounds. At the start of the war, the belligerents, especially the British and Germans, began distributing propaganda, both domestically and on the Western front. In August 1914, David Lloyd George appointed Charles Masterman MP, to head a Propaganda Agency at Wellington House. A distinguished body of literary talent was enlisted for the task, with its members including Arthur Conan Doyle, Ford Madox Ford, G. K. Chesterton, Thomas Hardy, Rudyard Kipling and H. G. Wells. Over 1,160 pamphlets were published during the war and distributed to neutral countries, and eventually, to Germany. One of the first significant publications, the Report on Alleged German Outrages of 1915, had a great effect on general opinion across the world. The pamphlet documented atrocities, both actual and alleged, committed by the German army against Belgian civilians. Dutch illustrator, Louis Raemaekers, provided highly emotional drawings which appeared in the pamphlet. In 1917, the bureau was subsumed into the new Department of Information and branched out into telegraph communications, radio, newspapers, magazines and the cinema. At the start of the Second World War, the British set up the Political Warfare Executive to produce and distribute propaganda. Through the use of powerful transmitters, broadcasts could be made across Europe. Sefton Delmer managed a successful black propaganda campaign through several radio stations which were designed to be popular with German troops while at the same time introducing news material that would weaken their morale under a veneer of authenticity. British Prime Minister Winston Churchill made use of radio broadcasts for propaganda against the Germans. The German dictator "H" however had been was greatly influenced by the psychological tactics of warfare the British had employed during WWI, attributing Germany's defeat to the effects this propaganda had on the soldiers. He became committed to the use of mass propaganda to influence the minds of the German population in the decades to come. Joseph Goebbels was appointed as Propaganda Minister when "H" came to power in 1933, and he portrayed the German leader as a messianic figure for the redemption of the country. While the term propaganda has acquired a strongly negative connotation associated with manipulation, aggression, slander or aggressive politics, in its original sense propaganda was neutral and could refer to uses that were generally positive, such as public health recommendations, signs encouraging citizens to participate in a census or election, or messages encouraging persons to report crimes to law enforcement. One example here is the Ghandi-Jinnah appeal for peace. . Very Good.

I Work Here: An Archive of 82 Photographic Identity Badges

Ardsley, NY: G. & G. Precision Works, Inc.. Archive of 82 metal pinbacked Identity badges from the G. & G. Precision Works company, based in Ardsley, New York, and dating from close to the company's founding, circa 1940. 80 badges contain a photograph; two are designated "Temporary Workers" and show only that printed designation. A military subcontractor, the firm employed a perhaps not surprisingly diverse work force, with a substantial percentage of the employees being either African-American or women, as was common during World War Two. The badge are 2 inches in diameter; the subjects are not named, nor are they identified by number. All of the badges are in very good if not excellent condition, with little to none of the clouding or damage to the image usually encountered, and with only one or two exceptions the pinbacks are in solid working order. It seems likely that the archive represents the complete work force, at least at one point in time. While there are a great many badges of this type in circulation, it is unusual to have them in this number, from a single emploter, and in such generally high grade condition.

        Signal - Sonderausgabe der «Berliner Illustrirten Zeitung». 1940, Heft 6-17; 1941, Heft 1-23/24; 1942, Heft 1-23/24; 1943, Heft 1-24; 1944, Heft 1-18; 1945, Heft 1-3 ( 5 Bde.).

Berlin, .45 1940 - 2°, pro Heft jew. 46 S. m. zahlr., tlw. farb. Abb., zahlreiche interessante Inserate., Privatbände minimal beschnitten (kein Textverlust). 20000 gr.         Tin Pan Alley (Original screenplay for the 1940 film)

Los Angeles: Twentieth Century-Fox, 1940. Final Script for the 1940 film musical, "Tin Pan Alley," directed by Walter Lang, based on the story "Life is a Song" by Pamela Harris, written for the screen by Robert Ellis and Helen Logan, and starring Alice Faye, Betty Grable, Jack Oakie, and John Payne. In a pairing that would a few years later been nearly impossible to pull off, Faye and Grable play a singing-sister act on the vaudeville circuit. Ambitious singer-songwriter Skeets Harrigan (John Payne) sense star potential in Faye, resulting in a great deal of ill will prior to the inevitable happy ending (Hal Erickson). All the songs heard in the film were popular during the period it depicts, including "Moonlight Bay," "Honeysuckle Rose," and "Goodbye Broadway, Hello France." Winner of the Academy Award for Best Musical Score. Light brown studio wrappers, stamped SHOOTING FINAL on the front wrapper, rubber-stamped project No. 566 and copy No. 54, dated August 15, 1940, and with the holograph file notation "Env. 1333" at the top right corner.
