La Doctrine Communiste de Marx - Engels - Lénine - Staline en six cours. Complet.

Bon Etat

Design for an "Umbrella Barrage Aerial Bomb

s.l.: s.n., n.d. (not after 1940). Very good antiquarian condition. Three blueprints, 17 x 20.75 inches, attached along the shorter size, folds visible, with accompanying black leatherette folder. A strange and unsettling juxtaposition of white snowflakes on blue ground, the aesthetic appeal of these technical designs betray the potentially horrific damage rendered by an array of explosives. The decidedly Art-Deco borders and technical drawings, the artist indentified only by the monogram PRH, convey a cold, austere elegance. Inscribed and signed "Read and understood, J.H. Payne, Sept. 12th, 1940." This is almost certainly Joseph H. ("Bubbles") Payne who was, at the time of this death, Lead Navigator, 100th Bombardment Group. Payne was killed in action on 28 April 1944 over Sottevast, France, and is buried at the Omaha Beach Cemetery.

Ejercito Argentino. Regimiento no. 3 de Infanteria "General Belgrano". Recuerdo de mi vida militar. Buenos Aires. A?o 1940. [Cover Title]

Buenos Aires: n.p., 1940. First edition. Patterned maroon leather album, two holes with string ties and tassels, gilt titles and illustrations on front board. A very good copy with wear to spine ends and corners of boards, writing on front pastedown and on a few leaves, edgeworn first leaf.. Unpaged [20 leaves]. Illus. with 19 mounted silver-gelatin photographs with spider-web tissue guards, 29 b/w photo-reproductions on 7 plates, and two small portraits. Over forty original signatures and inscriptions, some a paragraph long, on the front pastedown and verso of first leaf, plus one or two later on, all presumably members of the regiment. Includes a short history of the Regiment. A group photo of 28 officers has a separate bound-in key identifying them by name and rank. Created on May 29, 1810 and immediately sent as part of the relief expedition to the interior provinces, Regimiento no. 3 de Infanteria "General Belgrano" is the most prestigious brigade in the Argentinean army. This 1940 album, produced on the 140th anniversary of the regiment, was a crucial time for the military in Argentina, with the country officially neutral, but much influenced by the German military. The Regiment was led by General Ambrosio Vago (first photograph), a supporter of the Allies, who had refused to take part in the coup of 1930, though at this time was urging a new coup, along with a number of Axis-leaning officers, to oust President Ramón Castillo, with the goal of holding non-fraudulent elections. But it would be Peron who would lead the coup in 1943, with Vago, though ostensibly a Peronist, not participating, and exiled to Bahia Blanca. A rare photographic record of the Argentinean military before Peron's ascendancy. We could locate no copies of this nor any similar items in OCLC or other Latin American or European library databases.

Archive of paste-ups for radiofax news articles from the Buffalo Evening News, 1940

Buffalo, NY: Buffalo Evening News, 1940. Archive of ten original paste ups of radiofax news articles by the Buffalo Evening News, dated variously between January 17 and December 7, 1940. Radiofax, or radiofacsimile, was developed in the early twentieth century as a way to transmit images wirelessly using radio waves. RCA began manufacturing teleprinters for home use in the late 1920s, allowing people to receive and print local newspapers, as well as receive updated and breaking news, at home. Radiofax news services remained popular into the 1950s, when they were largely replaced by television. The technology is still used today by government weather services and the shipping industry. The paste ups in this archive would have been prepared at the offices of the Buffalo Evening News, scanned and transmitted by radio to subscribers in the area. Each paste up is date stamped, most with page numbers or brief layout guidelines in red pencil. Two of the paste ups feature copies of two comic strips (Adamson's Adventures by Henry Thol and Smatter Pop by Payne). The rest feature news items, including a visit by FDR to Buffalo and several items regarding the war in Europe, with photographs tipped directly onto the page. An archive of scarce ephemera regarding a mostly forgotten method of media communication, which nevertheless served a precursor to both television and the wifi of today. Paste ups 8.5. x 11 inches, generally Very Good plus or better. Tipped in photographs Near Fine.

        Typed and Signed Letter.

Lillehammer, dated ''January 13, 1940''. One sheet, typed on the author's stationery. 22,5x19,5 cm. 13 lines. Folded twice. With four punched holes in the inner and lower margins. Signed by Undset. The letter is an answer to an inquiry from Swedish librarian Folke Dahl (1905-1970), organiser of the Pro Finlandia charity auction of books and manuscripts for the aid of Finland during WWII. Undset has been asked to support the cause by donating one or more of her books to the auction. She answers that she would be happy to donate one of her manuscripts instead, and that she has already submitted a manuscript to a similar auction in Oslo. The auction was held in Stockholm in 1940, Undset's manuscript of the novel Madame Dorthea was sold for 185 Swedish Kronor to Erik Kempe. Madame Dorthea, Undset's last novel to be published during her lifetime, was intended as the first volume in a series of historical novels set in late 18th century Norway, but she was never able to continue the project. In April 1940, when German troops invaded Norway, she fled first to Sweden, then to the USA, where she pleaded for assistance to Norway through lectures and pamphlets. She did also sell her Nobel Prize medal in order to contribute to Finland's cause (while Hamsun gave his medal for free to Goebbels in 1943). The manuscript of Madame Dorthea was added to the collections of the Norwegian National Library in 2013.

Original Signed Halsman Photograph as Don Giovanni

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Superlative original 1940's doubleweight photograph of the great Italian Basso in his most celebrated role, inscribed and signed in white ink: "To Jean with happy remembrances of our stay together in the South Pacific and warmest wishes for Your happiness and future Ezio." Photographed by the American portrait photographer Philippe Halsman, with photo credit printed in white on bottom right and stamped on the back. 8 x 10 inches.<br><br>Pinza, famed for his charm and sex appeal as well as his rich bass voice, first appeared as Don Giovanni in 1929. He would become particularly associated with the role after Bruno Walter engaged him to sing it in Salzburg in 1934. Walter was convinced that Pinza would be right for the part when he remembered the effect the singer had had on the Walters' cook when he visited the family in New York: after answering the door, she ran back to Elsa Walter and whispered, "Ma'am, there's such a beautiful man outside." After the war years, Pinza became a major celebrity in the USA as the first Emil de Becque in Rodgers and Hammerstein's South Pacific, winning hearts across the country with the hit "Some Enchanted Evening."<br style="">Born in Riga to a Jewish family, Philippe Halsman began his career as a photographer in France in the 1930's, and gained a reputation as one of the best portrait photographers in France. He escaped France for the U.S. after the German invasion with help from Albert Einstein. After working as a fashion photographer and collaborating with artists including Salvador Dali, he became best known for his portraits of figures such as Einstein, JFK, Alfred Hitchcock, Judy Garland, Winston Churchill, Marilyn Monroe, and Pablo Picasso, many of which appeared on the cover of Life magazine.
