Typed letter signed ("A. Einstein"). Prob. Princeton, 3. XII. 1940.

1940. Large 4to. 1 p. To one of his cousins, recommending him to visit Erich Marx, an engineer from Karlsruhe (not identical with the German physicist of that name, the inventor of the "Marxsche Röhre", who emigrated into the United States in spring 1941): "[...] He is also in a rather modest situation, but he knows this country, and perhaps he has some ideas or personal connections which could be helpful to you [...] Unfortunately my affidavits have always been turned down lately because I have submitted too many already. Perhaps it would be better if your son quotes me as a reference and informs the person in question that I guarantee his reliability [...]" (translated from the German original). - On stationery with embossed letterhead.

Autograph Letter to Carl Busse, Sending a Poem

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Autograph letter from the Austrian writer who became one of the most highly regarded men of letters writing in German between the wars. Writing affectionately to the older German lyric poet and literary critic Carl Busse, Zweig sends tongue-in-cheek greetings to two friends, Lichtenstein (possibly expressionist writer Alfred Lichtenstein, killed in World War I) and Lilien (probably Jewish Art Nouveau artist Ephraim Moses Lilien) and copies the text of a poem in French, "Question," by Theophile Gautier, to be translated into German by Busse. He notes: "It is not only beautiful, but also profound: translate it freely, just make sure the last strophe keeps all its power." Ending the letter humorously, he writes, "Forgive me for not writing more, but I'm extremely lazy and just send you warm regards." He signs, "Stefan."<br>Zweig, a novelist, playwright, journalist and biographer, made his name in the inter-war period as the author of novels and biographies. He was also a prolific autograph collector and his massive collection of musical and literary manuscripts resides at the British Library. Zweig and his wife, who left Europe together in 1940, committed suicide in 1942, largely in desperation over the horrors continuing in their homeland.<br><br><br />In his customary purple ink. 2 pp. (1, 3 of a bifolium). Folding creases, light toning; overall in fine condition. 13 x 20.5 cm. The letter translated in full: "Dear little flag, here is the Gauthier [sic] poem, so that you can use the text and translation.  It is not only beautiful, but also profound: translate it freely, just make sure the last strophe keeps all its power. Tell my + + + friend Lichtenstein that he's a hack, and that he should stop bothering me with these cards, as he just [?] wrote one.  Tell Lilien - no, rather don't tell him anything at all, for after all, apart from Reclame he's not available to anyone. Forgive me for not writing more, but I'm extremely lazy and just send you warm regards, Stefan"

Autograph letter signed. [Brumath, June 1940].

A demain, mon amour.

EXCITEMENT IN ENTERTAINMENT: Columbia's Theme Song for 1940-1941

[Hollywood] / (New York): [Columbia Pictures] / (Polygraphic Company of America), [ca. 1940]. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Folio. 18.5? x 12.25? approx. Metallic gold paper covered boards with titles printed in red and blue. Rubbing to boards. Some light wear at spine ends. Interior bright and sharp. In original brown card mailer, worn at edges with moderate damp-staining (not effecting book) at one end. 50pp. Very good overall. Lavish promotional book of full-bleed and -color lithographed illustrations advertising upcoming programs for Columbia Pictures' 1940-1941 season. Likely distributed to theater owners and clearly produced well in advance of actual production, the book contains a disclaimer stating that properties may not be produced precisely as advertised. And indeed, most of the films advertised did not make it into theaters, or did so with different stars or under different titles. Of the films included, 11 appear to be completely unrealized, with most of the remaining either produced under different titles, with different principals, or both. Most of the pictures rely heavily on Columbia's roster of contract players: Cary Grant, Loretta Young, Melvyn Douglas, Jean Arthur, etc. Star directors like Charles Vidor also feature prominently. While many of the pictures seem well on their way to production ? with directors, writers and stars attached ? some seem to be little more than ideas, such as ?Canal Zone? or ?I Joined the Bund,? with generic titles evoking timely topics. In addition, a handful of CBS radio plays are advertised as well, including Ellery Queen and Blondie. An uncommon look into film marketing and production at the height of the studio era. Only two holdings in OCLC; especially rare with original mailer.

Important Early Autograph Letter: "I must forget our physical ailments and return gradually to my rainbow of modes, of rhythms, and of resonance."

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. An important wartime autograph letter signed by Olivier Messiaen ("Messiaen"), February 15, 1940, to his friend and musical supporter Virginie Schildge-Bianchini, thanking her for a care package, advising her on her musical pursuits, and shedding light on his own devotion to music even in the midst of a war.<br style="">Translated from the French, in part: "Thank you for your very kind letter and magnificent package. It will all be appreciated: from the good jam to the Lu Petit-Beurres, by way of the cheese, wafers, gingerbread, [...] honey (my passion!), the good salted butter, the chocolate and the cognac. Many, many thanks again. I am very touched! It's a very good idea to learn Bach by heart. It is also very good to take harmony and counterpoint lessons with J. P. Hennebains: you won't find a wiser and more devoted teacher... and that will allow you to resume composition again more fruitfully and easily. I am so happy to see you cultivating music with such zeal. My wife and my little son are freezing in glacial Auvergne... For my part, I must forget our physical ailments and return gradually to my rainbow of modes, of rhythms, and of resonance, living two lives simultaneously: that of 'my brother the body' and 'that of the spirit.'"<br style="">Written just four months before the composer's capture by German forces, and his two-year stay in a prisoner of war camp where he composed his Quartet for the End of Time, the letter demonstrates Messiaen's strength of purpose -- sustained, no doubt, by his strong religious faith -- in the worst of circumstances.<br style=""><br style="">1 p. Perforated edges; addressed and postmarked on the verso. Light wear and a few chips to the edges, but overall in fine condition. 4.5 x 6.25 inches (11.7 x 15.8 cm).<br style="">Virginie Schildge-Bianchini (later Zinke-Bianchini) had been a regular supporter of Messiaen's work since the 1930's. After his return from the war, she took lessons from him in Paris and also hosted several concerts of his music at her house.<br style="">

[Trade Catalogue] Ruth L. Mills Nomend Fashion Director Presents "American Favorites" By Nomend. For Autumn and Winter 1940

New York: Printer: Carey Press Corporation, 1940. First edition. Hardcover. Fine. Fabulous, novel and scarce trade catalogue by a hosiery company. 4to. 31.5 by 29 cm. 9 leaves of thick card. This most unusual of trade catalogues is built around a musical theme. The "American Favorite" refers to songs or theme music, with seven different selections: "Sweet Sue", "Juanita", "Dixie", "Yankee Doodle", "Dinah", "Sweetheart", and "Jeanie". To each is dedicated a two page spread depicting a woman dressed evocatively and nostalgically as befits the period associated with the music. Usually the same woman is shown in two different poses, one on each page, one more a close-up. The illustrations are three tone -- say, red and blue, green and red, etc. -- are rendered with a broad, impressionistic brush that was very much the style of the period -- think the backdrop for countless movie musical numbers of the period, or a set conceived by Cecil Beaton or Jean Cocteau. On the right page, usually with the more intimate image, are small insets of fabric, using real fabric, and the inset cut-outs shaped meticulously like the particular accessory -- a shoe, a glove, a pocketbook -- and other insets to fill out details such as street light globes, a steeple, a lampshade, etc. These fabric insets, all executed with great fastidiously and appeal, are the source of more varied color and pattern, and they very much contribute most to the uniqueness of the production. It is not that one won't see this kind of work in some other publication, but the extent of its employment here, factoring in the ephemeral nature of the project, and the quality of the craftsmanship, surely stand out as special. This Nomend company was making a big statement about the fineness of its product here. As if this weren't enough, the outside binding is of a floral silk damask, cushioned to the boards, and a centerpiece double inset featuring an oval color portrait within a gilded square, all meant also to evoke the prior century. The table of contents provides a table suggesting color combinations for outfits, and between each of the musical entries are two pages that amount to half-titles with floral decorated corners. The binding of the cards together is with a metal spiral contained within the outer binding -- one doesn't see the spiral from the outside. The book came within a large card-stock envelope, which is very well preserved.

        CLOSE THEIR EYES TENDERLY

Editions Inter-Pub n.d. [1940s?], Monaco - Octavo, pp. [1-6] 7-9 [10] 11-131 [132: blank] [note: first leaf is a blank], six inserted plates with surreal illustrations by Paule de Nize, original tan wrappers printed in red and black, all edges untrimmed. First edition. A macabre jue d'espirit of two 'bright young things' who embark on a career in murder for pleasure and profit. Very flip and cynical, satirizing conventions of formula romance; a cross between Ambrose Bierce and Charles Addams. Probably self-published by Robbins and apparently his last book, though credits page notes "To Appear Shortly / To Hell and Home Again." Robbins moved to France in the 1930s, dying there 10 May 1949. This book appears to have been published in the late 1930s or, more likely, the early 1940s. Locke (A Spectrum of Fantasy, p. 183) notes he once owned a copy of this "scarce" book. Not listed in standard fantasy or crime fiction checklists. Not in the Eaton Catalogue. Covers a bit tanned, else a fine copy. An obscure, rare book.         White Collar: A Novel in Linocuts

Pisani Printing & Publishing Co. [c.1940], San Francisco, CA - Quarto [27 cm]; stiff black card wrappers with title printed in light gray on backstrip, and illustration printed in light gray on the front wrapper. Illustrations printed in black and orange. Very good minus. The covers are rubbed and creased, there are small losses from the head of the spine and the corners of the covers, and the front cover has a couple of small stains. The pages are darkened, and slightly chipped at the fore edge corners. The top fore edge corners of the last 10 pages are damp stained. The John L. Lewis afterword has been excised, and is missing. In a black cloth covered slipcase, in very good minus condition, with rubbing, and a handful of prominent scrapes on the side panel. The longest scrape measures 3 1/2". A classic from the Great Depression much in the style of early Lynd Ward or Franz Masereel. First published privately just prior to World War II, White Collar has remained a biting critique of the powers that be, and at the same time championing the working class. This book is uncommon in any condition or edition. "White Collar was to be my contribution to, what I believed then, an indispensable understanding of the necessity of unity among all American workers and voters. I was not a writer, so illustrations in sequence were, I thought, the answer. I had a printing press and lots of linoleum to use for linoleum cuts, so I set to work the idea of doing the entire job myself. I was young, naive and in a hurry, but I soon discovered that a book, a story, an ideal, each is a slow process, even with some help from the family. It took several years to engrave, print, bind and distribute a book that was seen by a very few people who did not need convincing." - Giacomo Patri - June,1975. [Attributes: Soft Cover]
