[Photo Album]: "Meine Arbeitsdienstzeit April bis September 1940" (My Labor Service Period April to September 1940)

Germany, 1940. Near Fine. Small oblong 12mo measuring 6" x 4". String-tied decorative red cloth over stiff paper boards. Contains 31 sepia-toned or black and white silver gelatin photographs all measuring 2.25" x 3.5" with captions in German. Near fine album with fine photographs.A small collection of photographs kept by a German girl while participating in the Nazi youth program of Reichsarbeitsdienst (RAD). The organization began in 1935 and was a youth labor service group which trained young men in various manual labor pursuits until they were of military age. When World War II began the Reich opened up the program to German girls dubbing them "Arbeitsmaidens." The official word from the party leaders was that this was a form of "honorary service" for the German people and was "intended to educate German youth in the spirit of National Socialism as a national community and a true working-class, especially to respect the manual work." German girls were taught to perform tasks, usual farm labor, to eventually help with future families and were instilled with the idea that the ultimate goal of their lives should be to marry and have healthy German children. The photos in this album depict a young woman's compulsory six month service with the RAD as an Arbeitsmaid. It begins with a RAD flag with the insignia for the women's division which includes the swastika with "two stylized ears of wheat" beneath it. Following this are group photos of the girls in their uniforms of white blouses and long wool skirts. Other photos show the house they stayed in, eating meals, and performing tasks on a farm including bailing hay and tending to horses. One photo shows a girl picking apples, another shows a woman tending to a garden. All the women in the album appear proud of their service to Germany and happy to do their part. This particular girl's service was completed just before the 1941 decree that stated that Arbeitsmaidens could be used for auxiliary service due to the overwhelming demand for men to join the Wehrmacht. An interesting look at a young German woman's labor service during World War II.

        BRAIN WAVES AND DEATH

Charles Scribner's Sons, New York 1940 - 8vo., 244pp.; VG/VG-; spine black and blue pictorial with white and blue lettering; dust jacket protected with a mylar covering, price cut; dust jacket has some chipping to corners, head and tail of spine, lesser chipping to edges; small piece of tape on inside of dust jacket along middle of spine; pages slightly age-toned; teal cloth boards with blue lettering; LP consignment; shelved case 8 BRAIN-WAVES AND DEATH was published posthumously under the pseudonym "Willard Rich" a few weeks after its author, William T. Richards, took his own life. Richards worked for Alfred Lee Loomis and his novel was a thinly veiled account of a real-life laboratory located about 40 miles north of New York City nicknamed "Tuxedo Park." This "secret palace of science" was founded and funded by Loomis, arguably one of the most significant and uncredited figures in the history of modern military science. Loomis, a world-class tinkerer in his own right, was a visionary who saw that technology would win the looming war-and indeed that an investment in "big science" would be the key to national strength in the future. Loomis went on to establish the MIT Rad Lab and later was instrumental in setting up the Manhattan Project. According to legend, Loomis had all copies of Richards' roman-a-clef bought up and destroyed. Obviously he missed a few copies, but the book is uncommon , especially in jacket. Full-priced Rockville.         For Whom The Bell Tolls

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1940. First edition with the Scribners A of the novel that is regarded as one of Hemingway's best works. Octavo, bound in full morocco, gilt titles to the spine, raised bands, gilt ruled to the front and rear panels, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. In fine condition. A very nice presentation. For Whom the Bell Tolls combines two of Hemingway's recurring obsessions: war and personal honor. "This is the best book Ernest Hemingway has written, the fullest, the deepest, the truest. It will, I think, be one of the major novels of American literature Hemingway has struck universal chords, and he has struck them vibrantly" (J. Donald Adams). It was the basis for the 1943 film directed by Sam Wood, starring Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman. It was nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Actress; however, only the Greek actress Katina Paxinou won an Oscar for her portrayal of Pilar.

Archive of Hundreds of Manuscript, Handwritten Scraps, and Typed Pages

[No Publisher] [1940], [No Place] - An extensive collection of the poems of Frances Frost. Frances Frost (August 3, 1905 - February 11, 1959) was an American poet, novelist and the mother of poet Paul Blackburn. This collection contains hundreds of typed pages of poetry as well as clippings of published poems from newspapers and literary magazines dating from the early 1930's to the late 1940's. Many of the typed pages indicate that they have been copied from another source. The vast majority of the poems are by Frances Frost, but a few poems are attributed to other poets, such as a handwritten copy of Ballad of the Bloodthirsty Reader by Ethel Jacobson, indicated at bottom of page: Sat. Rev. of Lit. 10-27, 45. There are also contemporary newspaper clippings about Frances Frost that date mostly from the 30's and during World War Two (including a wedding announcement for her second marriage). The pages are in various states, but most are very good quality. The cache of papers is held in an envelope (mailed from Canada) addressed to a Dr. C. L. Hubbs of the Scripps Institution in California, though there is no known or apparent connection between Ms. Frost and Dr. Hubbs (who was a well-known ichthyologist). A known photocopy of Ms. Frost's handwriting is similar enough to the handwritten items in this collection to warrant further study, and may indicate that these pieces were her personal notes, copies and compositions. Some of the poems may be original unpublished works; Frances Frost published four books of poetry during the 30's and wrote and published many more children's books throughout the 1940's and 1950's. Her poetry was published in numerous magazines including The New Yorker, Harpers, The Saturday Review, as well as numerous newspapers. Among the hundreds of poems in this collection, the typed pages include the poems: Poem for an Autumn Morning? Return,? Pattern of Summer, Verge, Poem for the Body, and Voice for the April Dusk. Many handwritten poems are also included; some are incomplete and without titles, while some are complete; including the poems: Rebellion, To a Light-Hearted Love, Maine Island, and Old Pasture.

        Five Young American Poets

Norfolk, Connecticut: New Directions, 1940. Fine/Very Good. First edition. Fine in modestly age-toned very good or better dustwrapper. The first commercial book appearance of these five poets, preceding Berryman's and Jarrell's own separate first books by two years. Inscribed by John Berryman to a philosophy professor at Columbia University: "To Irwin Edman: On page 45, a paper on aesthetics long overdue. with sincere regard, John Berryman. Boston 18 Oct 1941." Laid in is the front of the original mailing parcel hand-addressed by Berryman to Edman, with his name repeated in the return address. Page 45 contains Berryman's introduction to the selection of his poems entitled "A Note on Poetry." Both Edman and Berryman both belonged to the Boar's Head Society at Columbia, a social group devoted to poetry. Berryman graduated from Columbia in 1936, so, indeed, his paper (whatever it was) was long overdue.

[Photo Album]: Ham Operators from Around the World 1940-1941 collected by a North Carolina Operator

Near Fine. Large oblong quarto. String-tied quarter leather and cork over boards with "Photographs" in gilt. 210 images, mostly gelatin silver, in a wide variety of sizes, mostly larger but one as small as .75" x 1" to as large as 8" x 10". Small scrape on front board, near fine, internally the images are fine. Well-captioned in white album ink identifying the subjects and their locations. Compiled by a ham radio operator, the album begins with a large group shot of radio operators with badges dated in 1940. Several following shots are from Newton, North Carolina, the compiler's home town, the photos are taken from "Skipper" presumably the compiler's car. These are followed by images of many individual operators, some taken in person at meetings at Canobie Lake, New Hampshire and Rosenberg, Texas; and several others seem to have been sent to the compiler from operators from Cincinnati, Galveston, Indiana, New Zealand, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New England, California, and many other locations. A nicely composed album of a specific type of community in a very narrow time period from late 1940 to mid-Summer 1941.

North Ireland, Sussex, Buckinghamshire, 1940-1944, 1940. Archive of over 50 manuscript signed letters by Major Cyril James "Jim" Lear, a British newspaper journalist and Major in the Royal Berkshire Regiment (his army number 6897312). 8vo. Single leafs, regiment stationery featuring the regiment's China Dragon insignia, measuring approximately 11,5 x 17,5 cm, at least half of which are in their original covers measuring approximately 12 x 9,5 cm and featuring censorship stamps. Together with 4 army documents pertaining to his transfer to the Royal Berkshire Regiment in 1940, one photographic string-tied Christmas greeting card issued for use by the regiment officers in 1941, and one portrait photograph. Army documents creased, otherwise the lot in very good condition. Cyril James Lear (1911-1987) was a British newspaper editor, who served with the Royal Army during World War II. On 18 April 1939 he was enlisted as a rifleman with the Queen's Westminsters. He obtained a commission as a Major in the Royal Berkshire Regiment in September 1940. The present stationery suggests that he was attached to the sixth battalion. Glimpses of army duty and camp life during the Second World War are dispersed in Lear's affectionate letters to his wife. Over the four year span he reveals the dangers of travel, his concerns for the welfare of his family, worry for the civilians of Plymouth during the Blitz. He shares both heart-warming and distressing encounters with some of the local folks in Ireland.. Manuscript.

Near Fine. Large oblong quarto. String-tied quarter leather and cork over boards with "Photographs" in gilt. 210 images, mostly gelatin silver, in a wide variety of sizes, mostly larger but one as small as .75" x 1" to as large as 8" x 10".

        [Photo Album]: New Jersey Girl

Perth Amboy, New Jersey, 1940. Near Fine. Oblong octavo measuring 7" x 10". String-tied black leather over paper boards with "Photographs" stamped on the front board. Contains 89 sepia-toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 1" x 1.5" and 6" x 8.5" with captions. Very good with chips, tears, and tape repairs on the front board with near fine photographs.A photo album kept by New Jersey native Lois Olsen between 1937 and 1940. It begins with a handwritten forward from Olsen which reads, "these pictures were all taken during the years 1937 and 1938. Most of them were snapped in my favorite places in Perth Amboy, usually near the [word?]. They are snaps of myself and my friends and are both comic and serious pictures. These are a few memoirs of some of the swell times I have had." Underneath this it reads, "P.S. since I began this book, more years have passed than I stated above: hence, this book also covers, 1939 & 1940, with pictures at plays & at work." The album does just that, follows Olsen over three years spending time with her friends and visiting her favorite places in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Olsen and her friends are pictured lounging on the beach and later ice skating all while smiling and obviously aware of the camera. The photos are a mix of portraits and candid snaps of people laughing and enjoying each other's company and coastal landscapes. One photo shows a ferry at night and a plane at Newark Airport as well as one that is captioned, "freighters at anchor in Raritan Bay." Olsen tried her hand at more artistic shots of water, the docks, boats, and even a still life of a park bench covered in snow. Towards the end of the album there are group photos of several school activites Olsen was involved with including the Triangle Club, the N.J. Club, and varsity cheerleading. An interesting collection of photographs of a young woman and her friends in the late 1930s.

[Photo Album]: English Nurse after Dunkirk and in India World War II

India, 1940. Near Fine. Oblong quarto measuring 9" x 12.5". String-tied green leather over paper boards. Contains 175 black and white or sepia toned gelatin silver photographs measuring between 1.5" x 1.5 and 6" x 10" with captions. Worn edges, tears, and rubbing else very good with near fine photographs.A photo album kept by a British nurse in England and India from 1940-1944. The first page shows photos from the grounds of a hospital in Leatherhead, England. Known as Leatherhead Emergency Hospital it was actually the Royal Blind School which had been requisitioned by King's College Hospital as a "national emergency hospital" for the duration of the war. Here the nurse poses with colleagues and wounded survivors of Dunkirk who sit smiling while in wheel chairs, on crutches, and with some covered in bandages. The weeks of fighting in France lead to the evacuation of the British and sent thousands home to England to be treated for wounds. One photo shows the queen exiting a building of the hospital with a nurse and getting into her car. Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, was known for visiting wounded soldiers throughout the country to boost morale as part for the war effort. In 1941 she was sent to India where she started her time at the Western Ghats. These photos show the splendor of the mountain ranges and jungle and include some hand colored snapshots. She continued to explore the country over the next three years attending the Poona Races, visiting the Bombay museum, and taking a trip to Meerut. Throughout the album it is clear she was interested in honing her photography skills and had a good eye for the art. She captured the locals of the cities she visits while they work and interact with each other. One photo shows a snake charmer performing at the Hotel Cecil in Dehli, another captioned, "New Camel, New Wife" shows a recently married couple atop a camel. Women in Kashmir are seen in colorful clothing holding their babies, another photo shows a young man making papier-mache bowels, another shows a group captioned as "prisoners" being marched away. In Meerut she took numerous photos of the wild life and included a photo of a graveyard built for monkeys. She attended local events including the Hindu, Durga Poojah, and Tibetan festivals and took pictures of the gatherings. One of the most striking images is of a man lounging on a bed of nails in Sadhu. She worked at the Poona (Pune) Barrack Hospital which can be seen towards the end of the album. Here she poses with soldiers from the China-Burma-India Theater recovering from their wounds. There are photos captioned "staff" and "patients" that capture the life at the hospital with smiling men goofing off with the nurses. She also attended a military wedding for an officer in Meerut which included uniformed men holding swords for the new couple to walk through. The final photos show a grave site with a large angel statue and a hand colored photo of a meditating statue of Buddha. An interesting account of a British nurse's time serving on both the home front and in India with the medical corps during World War II, especially interesting for the immediacy of the Dunkirk images.

[Photo Album]: World War II: Japanese Family

Japan, 1940. Near Fine. Oblong octavo. String tied black leather over paper boards measuring 5.5" x 8". Contains 65 sepia toned and black and white photographs measuring between 2" x 2.5" to 4" x 5.75" with occasional captions in Japanese. Very good album with rubbing and edgewear with near fine photographs with some edgewear.A photo album kept by a Japanese family beginning during World War II. The early photos show men in uniform posing for group photos, a seemingly high ranking officer overseeing work on a train, and comrades in fields and camps. One photo shows a group of soldiers pushing a machine gun on a battlefield and another shows troops piled into the backs of trucks being transported. The album continues after the war with an elaborate funeral procession through the streets, numerous group photos of the family, and panoramic views of a highway bridge and a caravan. There are also photos of men posing on their motorcycles and one wonderful image of a group of men on top of a truck waving flags and celebrating, though it is not clear what the cause of celebration is. A modest but interesting collection of a Japanese family and their military ties.
