[Five Original Stills based on Benton's Character Portraits for THE GRAPES OF WRATH]

[Los Angeles: 2oth Century-Fox, 1940. Five original 8 x 10" glossy b&w stills. Pencil numbers on two versos, otherwise near fine. Thomas Hart Benton prepared several works as publicity pieces for John Ford's 1940 film version of Steinbeck's novel, most famously a version of THE DEPARTURE OF THE JOADS that was incorporated in several of the differing styles of posters. He also prepared a series of portraits of the characters, but these were not incorporated in the posters, but rather utilized in the theatre program that was offered at the opening exhibitions of the film. They were also reproduced in the form of six stills (according to the negative numbers - only five are present here), evidently in very limited quantities as they are quite scarce. Apart from an appearance by this same group at auction in 2008, we've not encountered another.

        Notholirion campanulatum.

Dulau & Co. Ltd. / The Royal Horticultural Society. [London.] [ 1940]. - Handcolored lithograph, sheet size approximately 21 3/4 x 14 3/4 inches, matted to 25 3/4 x 18 inches. Area of the print that was exposed in the mat opening has evenly toned; otherwise very good, clean condition with bright color. This handcolored lithograph was published with Part VII of the Supplement to Henry Elwes 1880 Monograph of the Genus Lilium. This important botanical monograph highlights the extraordinary wealth of China and surrounding countries in the species Lilium. As Elwes' friend and collaborator Arthur Grove states in the introduction to the Supplement: "When Elwes prepared his Monograph about fifty species of Lilium were known to exist, and it was then the general opinion among experts that few remained to be discovered. With his customary acumen, Elwes himself expressed the view that 'The only regions from which much novelty can be expected are the Eastern Himalayas and the immense tract of unexplored and difficult mountain country which surrounds our Indian Empire on the north and east, and which lies round the head-waters of the Irrawaddy, the Bramputra, and the Yang-tse-kiang.' These words were written in 1880, some years before the botanical exploration of Western China began, and Elwes proved a wiser prophet than he knew. At that time, however, no one in England suspected that the area indicated by him was soon to prove richer in lilies than either Japan or Western North America." The first 7 parts of the Supplement were issued between 1933 and 1940. These were limited to 250 copies with a total of 30 handcolored plates drawn and lithographed by Miss Lilian Snelling. The large folio size is used to great advantage to showcase this stunning bloom, with botanical details at the lower left. The habitat of this lily is noted in the text (supplied in facsimile) as being Western China, north-west Yunnan and Northern Burma.

        Typed and Signed Letter.

      - Lillehammer, dated "January 13, 1940". One sheet, typed on the author's stationery. 22,5x19,5 cm. 13 lines. Folded twice. With four punched holes in the inner and lower margins. Signed by Undset. The letter is an answer to an inquiry from Swedish librarian Folke Dahl (1905-1970), organiser of the Pro Finlandia charity auction of books and manuscripts for the aid of Finland during WWII. Undset has been asked to support the cause by donating one or more of her books to the auction. She answers that she would be happy to donate one of her manuscripts instead, and that she has already submitted a manuscript to a similar auction in Oslo. The auction was held in Stockholm in 1940, Undset?s manuscript of the novel Madame Dorthea was sold for 185 Swedish Kronor to Erik Kempe. Madame Dorthea, Undset?s last novel to be published during her lifetime, was intended as the first volume in a series of historical novels set in late 18th century Norway, but she was never able to continue the project. In April 1940, when German troops invaded Norway, she fled first to Sweden, then to the USA, where she pleaded for assistance to Norway through lectures and pamphlets. She did also sell her Nobel Prize medal in order to contribute to Finland?s cause (while Hamsun gave his medal for free to Goebbels in 1943). The manuscript of Madame Dorthea was added to the collections of the Norwegian National Library in 2013. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Typed Letter Signed to Edna Gellhorn

1940 - HEMINGWAY, Ernest. Typed letter signed. Cuba, 1940. Single sheet, measuring 8-1/2 by 11 inches. $8500.Typed letter from Ernest Hemingway to his future mother-in-law, Edna Gellhorn (the mother of Martha Gellhorn, his third wife), signed: "much love from Ernest."Martha Gellhorn had been in Finland to cover the war for Collier's magazine at the end of 1939 and returned in January, 1940. In this letter, written shortly after Martha's return, Hemingway tells Edna Gellhorn about her daughter's physical condition and declares how much he loves her. The letter reads, in part: "Dear Mother". [Martha] is wonderful and healthy and un-nervous and getting rested. She is 13 pounds over-weight but those were the 13 pounds that brought her home healthy instead of broken down and a wreck so I am fond of every one of them. She had to eat and drink plenty to survive that cold and if she had not been in the fighting cock condition she was in when she left Sun Valley she never could have stood up under that trip. I love her so much and am so proud of her that I know how much you must love her and how proud you are. Well if she was a horse that had just won the Derby it could be that you bred her and I trained her. Only I trained her damned little. But we have both trained each other very well. Then there wasn't anything I could do to please Marty in the last days before she got here except maybe be neat so hell went in so for that and for organization etc. that was terrific. You see I never ran a house before but it just the same thing as a boat really and these servants are absolutely unspoiled and fine to work with. Now we are going to take about ten of the 13 pounds off and I am going to work hard and not worry. We have been so happy and haveing [sic] risked it all know what it was we risked and what loneliness is. All the good part I would never think about while Marty was away because it made me too lonely to live but now it is just as though your soul had come back into your body and we are awfully good for each other too in every way". And I know now how it was a great and lucky thing for me that the three of you came into Mr. Josie's [Sloppy Joe's in Key West] that time in spite of all breakage. Almost no one gets what they should have and I have. This is just a note (very illiterate as usual) to tell you how much I love you and to thank you again for sending Marty and to tell you how much I look forward to when we can all be together again. [signed] Much love from Ernest." Hemingway and Martha Gellhorn met in Key West in December 1936 and were married on November 21, 1940. Although they divorced on December 21, 1945, Hemingway maintained a close friendship with his mother-in-law. The year 1939 has been written in ink on the bottom of the letter, possibly by Edna Gellhorn.Original faint fold marks. Fine condition. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

        Photograph. WITH: Autograph note signed

1940 - (CAPA, Robert) HEMINGWAY, Ernest. Photograph. WITH: Autograph note signed. Sun Valley, Idaho: (Life), [1940]. Vintage gelatin silver print (9-1/2 by 12-inches), Capa/Life magazine inkstamp on print verso, partial leaf in manuscript (1-1/4 by 3-1/2 inches) centered below print, each window-matted, together framed (total measures 13-1/2 by 18-3/4 inches). $6500.Scarce 9-1/2 by 12-inch vintage gelatin print of Hemingway from a wonderful photograph by his friend, famed photographer Robert Capa, taken in Sun Valley, Idaho in the fall of 1940, with Hemingway's inscription on a partial leaf inscribed by him, "From Ernest Hemingway, Sun Valley, Idaho," handsomely framed together. This wonderful 9-1/2 by 12-inch vintage gelatin silver print of Hemingway, framed with his inscription, is from a photograph by renowned war photographer Robert Capa. Capa took the photograph in October 1940, when the two men were joined by Hemingway's three sons and future wife, writer Martha Gellhorn, at Sun Valley Lodge in Sun Valley, Idaho. Hemingway, Capa and Gellhorn had become close friends during the Spanish Civil War, where Hemingway's "dispatches provide a vivid accuracy of how the war was fought"" and his experience would later inform his writing of For Whom the Bell Tolls" (Putnam, Prologue Magazine). That novel, published the same month as this stay in Sun Valley, earned immediate praise as "one of the major novels in American literature" (New York Times). In a 2008 interview, Hemingway's son Patrick recalled that it was on this trip that Hemingway's nickname of Papa "was started by Capa". [who] was sent out to do a shoot on Hemingway sort of relaxing after coming back from the Spanish Civil War in Sun Valley. And all of Hemingway's children were there, my half brother, Jack, and my full brother, Gregory. The three of us were all there, and we kept calling him papa because he never wanted to be called dad. And so Capa said, is it all right if I call you papa, too? And that's when it started" (NPR). During their time in Sun Valley, Hemingway and company enjoyed several hunting and road trips, and Hemingway and Gellhorn's marriage on November 21 would "figure in a two-part photo essay in Life by their friend Robert Capa. The second part was a series of quotations from For Whom the Bell Tolls accompanied by Capa's [Spanish] Civil War photographs" (Mellow, 522). This exceptionally scarce vintage print of Hemingway shows the writer standing at road side next to a parked vehicle. His hair touseled by the wind and squinting against the sun, Hemingway raises a hand toward the camera in what appears to be an offer of food. Capa and Hemingway later had a falling out at the break-up of Hemingway's marriage to Gellhorn, whose novella Till Death Do Us Part (1958) speaks to her relationship with Hemingway and friendship with Capa. Photographs from this trip were included in Capa's book, Slightly out of Focus (1947), and his photographs of Hemingway were also featured in Life's 1961 issue paying tribute to the writer shortly after his tragic suicide in Ketchum, Idaho. Inkstamp stating "Life Photo by Robert Capa" on print verso, visible in windowed cut-out on frame verso. Two small framer's labels to frame verso. Inscription bold and clean. A fine framed print.         The Reluctant Dragon (Original screenplay, copy belonging to Disney producer-director Ben Sharpsteen)

Walt Disney Productions / RKO Pictures, Los Angeles 1940 - Final Shooting Script for the classic 1941 Disney film, "The Reluctant Dragon," based on the short story by Kenneth Grahame that originally appeared in the 1930 collection "Dream Days," directed by Alfred L. Werker, and starring Robert Benchley, Walt Disney, and a host of Disney's greatest animators. Copy belonging to Disney director and producer Ben Sharpsteen (with his name in holograph pencil at the top of the front wrapper), who contributed to over 30 Disney features between 1934 and 1960, including "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" (1937), "Fantasia" (1940), "Pinnochio" (1940), "Dumbo" (1941), and "Cinderella" (1950). "The Reluctant Dragon" was the first Disney animated feature to include live-action footage, a behind-the-scenes documentary about the studio's animation process including the cartoon short of the title, which in later years was often exhibited separately from this film. Robert Benchley stars as himself, a visitor to the Disney lot, where he intends to pitch an animated version of the children's fairy tale The Reluctant Dragon by Kenneth Grahame to Walt Disney. Benchley wanders away from his studio-appointed guide and tours the facilities himself, where he sees various new cartoons in the process of being storyboarded, including a "Baby Weems" short. Benchley meets Clarence Nash (the voice of Donald Duck), famed Disney animator Ward Kimball, another "animator"(played by Alan Ladd), and Walt Disney himself before being corralled to Disney's screening room, where he is shown the company's new short, none other than "The Reluctant Dragon." In addition to being a landmark in animation development, the film has become perhaps the ultimate record of the Disney studio at work during its peak. Olive wrappers, with a white title label at the center of the front wrapper in manual type, noting that this Copy No. 104, the title, "Final Shooting Script," and a date of 9-30-40. Title page present, with a list of screenwriter credits that, interestingly, includes Benchley (who was not credited in the final film). 170 leaves, mimeograph, with blue revision pages throughout. Pages Near Fine, wrapper Very Good plus with light yapping to the edges, bound with three silver screw-style brads. In a custom quarter leather clamshell box. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        War Orphans

1940 - SZYK, Arthur. "War Orphans." London: 1940. Original signed watercolor and gouache painting on paper (image 9-1/2 by 10-1/2 inches, sheet measures 12 by 16 inches); very handsomely framed (18 by 20 inches). $25,000.Extraordinary signed original watercolor and gouache painting of two young Jewish refugees, huddled together, by anti-Nazi caricaturist Arthur Szyk, whose wartime portrayals of brutality, heroism and suffering strongly influenced American attitudes toward the war effort.Polish-born Arthur Szyk considered his work to be "weapons of war." Upon the German invasion of Poland in 1939, his life and career were altered forever. Syzk lived in London at the time, and, in an effort to sway American public opinion against the Nazis, British authorities dispatched him to New York City. There he was to assume the role of unofficial propagandist for the Allied powers, contributing a steady stream of anti-Nazi cartoons and caricatures for major U.S. publications, including Time, Collier's, Esquire, The New York Times, the New York Post (where he eventually served as editorial cartoonist) and the Chicago Sun. For this mission, Szyk developed a new and different approach from his established style of "illumination," creating caricatures that combined the precise detail and fine craftsmanship of his miniaturist illustrations with the barbed satire of political commentary. A survey conducted in 1941 by Esquire magazine proclaimed that Szyk's political cartoons were more popular with American military trainees than photos of pin-up girls. His drawings were used to promote U.S. war bonds, and were credited with boosting more sales than any other vehicle. In his wartime work, Syzk focused primarily on three major themes: the brutality of the Germans, the heroism of the Poles, and the suffering of the Jews. These themes were present in his 1940 exhibition, "War and "˜Kultur' in Poland," which opened in London, and later in Toronto and New York. This striking original watercolor and gouache painting of "War Orphans," signed by Szyk and dated "London, 1940," was apparently among the images in that exhibition. According to the exhibit catalogue, Szyk's series of paintings and drawings portrayed Poland in a state of "distress and fury." Many of the works in the show attacked Nazi leaders and later appeared in his The New Order (1941). "Szyk's extraordinary virtuosity has not, however, been impaired by the tragedy of his country and his religion, and those who care for exotic coloring combined with the medieval miniaturist's precision of detail could not but be interested in his work" (Thomas MacGreevy). Fine condition. A beautiful piece. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

1940. 8 eh. SS. und 37 SS. Typoskript (teils Durchschläge), vielfach mit eigenh. Zusätzen und Korrekturen, zumeist mit eh. U. Zusammen in Mappe der "Societatea Comunala a Tramvaielor Bucuresti", eh. beschriftet "Moderne Walzer-Bostons | Proprietatea: Tedi Weinberg". Genig gestruft host di ins of a mul, Beweis ein Wess far dein trei Volk Jisruel [...] vertrieben fin Haus in Hoif sennen mir. A tell fin ins Jiden hot menn gemacht, ganze Familien, verschleppt in der Nacht.
