        The Lion and the Unicorn.

London: Secker & Warburg,, 1940. Socialism and the English Genius. Small octavo (180 x 110 mm). Blue wire-stitched wrappers, front cover lettered in black. Slight wear and rubbing to extremities, small nick to top edge of front cover, some light marks to covers, creasing to joints and throughout, an excellent copy. Pre-publication proof copy. Orwell wrote The Lion and the Unicorn between August and October 1940, and the first edition was published by Secker & Warburg on 19 February 1941. This proof can be dated to those few interim months. Its preliminary matter is much more sparse than that included in the first edition, and there are light pencil annotations by an unknown hand throughout. Proof copies of The Lion and the Unicorn are rare, both commercially and institutionally.

The Earl of Chicago / A M-G-M Production * Robert Montgomery / The Book is Complete and Unabridged

Grosset & Dunlap, New York 1940 - Hard-to-find Grosset & Dunlap film tie-in edition with B&W still from the 1940 Robert Montgomery-Edward Arnold-Edmund Gwenn MGM film to dust jacket front panel. Copyright page identified this copy as the 1937 Bobbs-Merrill "First Edition," but it's not -- "Grosset & Dunlap" printed to spines of both book and jacket indicate this is the edition released by the reprint house to capitalize on the release of the 1940 drama, with G&D simply using the original Bobbs-Merrill plates. Book, bound in red cloth, is in "very good" condition though it smells a bit musty. (It came to us from New England.) Jacket "good only" with some spine fading and a one-by-two-inch triangular chip to top right of front panel. There are NO internal photographic film stills, nor does it appear there ever were. Hollywood is infamous for pasting inappropriate "happy endings" on stories to turn dramas into romantic comedies. Here, oddly enough, producer Victor Saville and writer Gene Fowler appear to have done the opposite, taking the otherwise familiar "set-up" of the Chicago gangster informed he's inherited an English castle and title, downplaying the romantic comedy aspects, and creating for MGM an essay on who and what are truly "noble." We haven't seen the movie (which was well received), but we suspect we'd still prefer the book, with its happi(er), romantic ending. Uncommon to find this title in any dust jacket. 305 pp. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Autograph Letter Signed, in German, 8to, 4pp on two separate sheets, 20 Marsfield Gardens, London, January 6, 1950, with transmittal envelope

Writing to Freud family housekeeper, Paula Fichtl, Anna Freud refers to "Mrs. Burlingham," Freud's lifelong friend Dorothy Tiffany Burlingham, the American child psychoanalyst and educator best known for her joint work with Anna Freud on the analysis of children; she was the daughter of Louis Comfort Tiffany. After her divorce, Burlingham moved with her four children to Vienna where she went into treatment with Sigmund Freud. She became a lay psychoanalyst working with Anna Freud in studying children. She moved with the Freuds to England after the Nazi takeover of Austria. Burlingham worked with Anna Freud at the Hampstead Clinic, having moved in with her in 1940 and staying at the house until her death in 1979. In our letter, Anna refers to her mother Martha Bernays Freud, 89 years of age at the time, less than two years before her death in November of 1951. Admittedly, she was quite elderly and it was no doubt true that she was not in the health she was once in. A letter written from Martha to Fichtl just six days later [See Schulson Autographs ALS Jan. 12, 1950 from Martha Bernays Freud to Paula Fichtl] shows that her health was not so bad at all. She says that all is good, everyone is fine, but that she misses Paula. She says that winter hadn't arrived yet (though Anna says in the letter offered here that it was too cold for her mother to go out). In the Jan. 12 letter Martha says, "Old age altogether is not good, that I know myself." So, perhaps she wasn't as well as she suggests! Julia Weiss is mentioned ("Julia Weiss was sick for a day with a stomach cold or a kind of poisoning."). Weiss was Sigmund Freud's secretary, then during the war. While in London she "was responsible for the bookkeeping and the correspondence of Anna Freud… employed as assistant to the director of the War Nurseries." [See: "The Anna Freud Tradition… ," edited by Norka T. Malberg & Joan Raphael-Leff.] Freud ends the letter with a mention of a radio program on psychoanalysis. "The day before yesterday there was a broadcast of 45 minutes, on the Light Program on Psychoanalysis, very well done and correct." She reefers to "Focus on psychoanalysis" which aired on BBC Light Programme, January 4, 1950 from 8:00 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. [See http://genome.ch.bbc.co.uk/schedules/light/1950-01-04]. BBC Light Programme broadcasted chiefly mainstream light entertainment and music from 1945-1967 when it became BBC Radio 2. There were a series of broadcasts in 1949 and 1950 by Donald Woods Winnicott (1896-1971), one of Britain's leading psychoanalysts and pediatricians who authored some of the most enduring theories of the child and of child analysis [see Google review of "The Collected Work of D.W. Winnicott"]. His series of nine radio broadcasts for BBC Home Service was on "The Ordinary Devoted Mother and Her Baby; How's the baby?" "Focus onpsychoanalysis" which Anna Freud heard on Paula's radio was produced by Nesta Pain, and the series was edited by Dennis Bardens. The description of it is: "Since Freud first advanced his theory of the unconscious mind, psychoanalysis has gained increasing acceptance as a means of treating mental illness. Is psychoanalysis an exact science? What are its fundamentals, how are these learned, and how are they applied? Tonight's programme, written by a physician, examines the subject, which has its ardent supporters and vehement critics." There is no mention of the physician who wrote the program and none has been found. It could have been D.W. Winnicott, but it is not known. Translation: I forward your mail to you, it's probably still Christmas greetings from all over the world. Somebody at home will surely enjoy the beautiful Greek stamps Yesterday your first letter arrived and everybody enjoyed it. Your describe everything so vividly we could really picture it all specially the 10 people and the dog coming to greet you at the stations! and traveling is so much easier now and even the costume. You should go home now regularly every year. Did the packages already arrive that you had sent ahead? Mrs. Burlingham caught a slight cold and the weather is bad so that we stayed home this weekend The workmen have finished with the cracks. I hope they did a good job. Mary and Gwen are quite well and everything goes its regular way. Mama is crocheting a blanket and works already at the blue edge. For her the weather is too bad to go out. Julia Weiss was sick for a day with a stomach cold or a kind of poisoning. Yesterday we had our first meeting but one without catering. I had to work many hours this week and did not get to catch my breath. I am glad your father is better this year. Getting old is never beautiful and one notices the change much stronger when one is not all the time there. The day before yesterday there was a broadcast of 45 minutes, on the Light Program on Psychoanalysis, very well done and correct. We listened to your radio as my small one is broken, unfortunately. John Barnes really returned the 16 s(shillings) and now I brought the lamps to Heal and ordered a nice shade. Finally. All the best and don't forget to eat and sleep. Greetings of the whole family...Anna Freud."

von etwa 300 Blatt Orangenpapieren. Ca. 1940-1970.

JOURNEY INTO FEAR.

London: Hodder and Stoughton Limited, [1940]., 1940. First edition. First edition. Former owner's neat address stamp at top of front fly leaf, light offsetting to front and rear endpapers else a very good, bright copy in dust jacket with some minor internal professional restoration at the spine ends. Returning to his hotel room after a late-night flirtation with a cabaret dancer, Graham is surprised by an intruder with a gun. What follows is a nightmare for the English armaments engineer as he makes his way home aboard an Italian freighter. Among the passengers are a couple of Nazi assassins intent on preventing his returning to England with plans for a Turkish defense system, the seductive cabaret dancer and her manager husband, and a number of surprising allies. This is a scarce book in the British edition. It's scarcity is attributed to copies being stored in the Hodder and Stoughton warehouse which was completely destroyed by German bombs during World War II. An attractive copy of a desirable book. Housed in a clamshell case with the dust jacket design imprinted on the cover.

This is Mervyn Peake's first commission as illustrator and his second illustrated book, following Captain Slaughterboard Drops Anchor (1939); its success led to Chatto & Windus commissioning Peake to illustrate their edition of Lewis Carroll's The Hunting of the Snark (1941). His illustrations for these nursery rhymes have been described as drawing out "the darkest implications of the stories". [Attributes: First Edition]

BALDWIN LOCOMOTIVE WORKS. WORLD WAR II ARMAMENT & STEAM LOCOMOTIVE BOILERS PHOTOGRAPHS

Eddystone, PA: Baldwin Locomotive Works, 1940 - 1944., 1940 - 1944. First edition. First edition. 9 3/8" x 11 3/4" oblong, black cloth binder with titles stamped in gold gilt on the front cover, contains forty-eight 7 3/4" x 10" black & white photographs each individually housed in a transparent protective folder. Most of the photographs are dated and have identifying numbers at the lower corners of the images, as well as three with pen annotations and one with a "BLH" stamp to the verso. "BLH" most likely stands for Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton, the name into which the company eventually evolved. This remarkable album of company photographic images vividly portray Baldwin's wartime military WWII production, showing their tanks, artillery, railroad guns, rolling stock, and steam locomotives, as dictated by the War Production Board. This photo archive begins with a series of photos of the M3 Medium tank, including the General Lee, General Grant, M31 Tank Recovery Vehicle, 105 mm Howitzer Motor Carriage M7, along with the M4 Sherman Tank. The photographs show the tanks on maneuvers, negotiating steep hills, driving in formation outside the Baldwin Locomotive factory in Eddystone, and even the firm's president, Charles Brinley riding in an M3. This followed by a series of images showing the manufacture and delivery of the 8-inch Railway gun mount, the Barbette Carriage constructed so that it was capable of a 360-degree traverse, and 45-degree elevation, designed primarily for use as a coastal defensive gun. The photos portray the construction of the mountings, the barrels, and pumps necessary for elevating the gun, and the delivery ceremony when it was officially turned over to the Army Ordnance Department on Feb. 7, 1941. This gun was capable of hurling a 260-pound shell a distance of 18 miles. Brigadier General R. W. Case, Commanding General of Watertown Arsenal, and Major D.N. Hauseman, Executive Officer, Philadelphia Ordnance District officially accepted the gun from Charles E. Brinley, also pictured in the photos. This was the first railroad gun manufactured by Americans since 1918, and several are shown in various stages of manufacture on the factory floor. The concluding group of images show the fabrication of steam boilers for Steam locomotives and machined fittings, as well as rolling stock tenders, and switchers. Unfortunately for Baldwin Locomotives, the War Production Board ordered them to produce only steam locomotives and diesel-electric yard switching engines depriving them of the chance to develop their diesel locomotive line during the War. After World War II, they were too far behind EMD and Alco, so even after merging with Lima-Hamilton in 1950, they were out of business by 1956. The boiler pictured in a few of the images was for a 2-8-2 steam locomotive used by the Canadian Transcontinental Railway after the war.

John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1940 - 1940 Wisden Original Hardback

1940. Hi, This lot is a 1940 Original Hardback Wisden in Good to Very Good Condition. For a 1940 this is closer to very good than good, plus it has not had any restoration which is rare as many 1940s (due to their usual poor condition) do. The boards are clean but show some age and darkness , the gilt is starting to fade but original and better than many, more so on the spine than the front. Odd dot mark to the boards. Internally the front hinge is weak and you can see a bit of mesh at the top of the book for 2 inches. Internally the pages are very good. Without restoration. Better than many 1940s. Some weakness at page 32. This hardback was my Nemesis for 3 years and a hard book to find, pretty impossible in very good condition (Im still looking so let me know if you have one). I have an alternative 1940 Hardback if needed, it is a lot cheaper as in a lot poorer condition. Please ask.

First Screenplaywriting Course.; School for Writers, Hollywood Chapter, League of American Writers. Class notes

1940. Fine.. Spiral-bound notebook, approx. 5 X 8 inches, with 80 leaves of ruled paper; stiff brown card covers, with typed label affixed to front. All but one leaf virtually filled with original pencil notes, over 150pp in all, by a writer who attended the class taught by Michael Blankfort and John Howard Lawson, along with a number of guest lecturers. The notes are thorough, meticulous, legible, and fascinating, documenting in great detail the content of the lectures, with extensive verbatim quotes and summaries of analyses. The roster of teachers is impressive, comprising some of the most significant Hollywood screenwriters, a number of whom would be blacklisted not long after this course. The notes start with the course introduction by Blankfort, writer of "Blind Alley" who would later front for Hollywood Ten writer Albert Maltz on the script for "Broken Arrow" (1950). A good portion of the course notes present lectures by Lawson, another member of the Hollywood Ten; others represented are Jerry Zackheim, Sheridan Gibney (Academy Award winner for "Louis Pasteur"), Jerome Chodorov, Dudley Nichols (founder of the Screen Writers Guild, Academy Award Winner for "The Informer" as well as writer of "Stagecoach" and "Bringing Up Baby"), Robert Rossen, (Academy Award winner for "All the Kings Men") and Allen Scott (who wrote screenplays for several Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers pictures). The content of the lectures as reflected in these notes provides a detailed examination of the screenwriter's craft, with contemporary examples from the day. Offered together with a second notebook containing 24pp of the same writer's notes from another course on playwriting taught by George Sklar, the playwright of social protest who was a board member of the Federal Theatre Project. He too would be blacklisted.

[Attributes: Soft Cover]
