Lawyer Addressing the Bench with Portrait of Lincoln

New York: Circa 1940s. - Oil on canvas. Signed lower right. 25 x 30 inches. The legal name of Jack Levitz was likely Ebbitt Abraham Levitz, born September 27, 1896 in Vilna, also known as the Jerusalem of Lithuania. There was civil unrest in Vilna in 1897 due to agitation for worker's rights by the General Jewish Workers Union, also known as the bund. It is likely that Levitz immigrated to the United States with his family around the end of the nineteenth century.Levitz became friends with William Saroyan, the author of many children's books. In 1941 Saroyan wrote a profile of Levitz for Don Freeman's Newsstand journal. He describes Levitz as "roly-poly" with a cigar in his mouth. According to Saroyan who got it from Levitz, Levitz could not recall his original first name and simply made up the name "Ebbet." Levitz was prolific and tossed off drawings and casual paintings with ease which he sold for a few dollars. According to Saroyan, "The paintings he really paints. are usually great."Ebbitt Abraham [Jack] Levitz died in December, 1964 at the age of 68. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

        Pat the Bunny

NY: Simon & Schuster, 1940 12mo, (4 1/8" wide x 5 3/8), pictorial boards, Very good in publisher's box (worn). A now classic book, illustrated in color. Every other page offers a different activity for the youngest child to enjoy and TOUCH (7 in all). It was partly an experiment in using interactive elements in a book, which was unusual at the time. This is the very rare first issue of this iconic title, with a ball that was designed to squeak when the child pressed it. Because it malfunctioned most of the time, it was replaced with a box of real buttons. The mirror in the first issue was also later replaced with scented flowers. This is one of the rarest of all modern picture books, especially in the first issue with the original ball and mirror pages and in the original box. (Actual mirror not present.) See Bader p.238- 9. Housed in a custom-made slipcase. $20,000.

[Four Quartets, comprising] East Coker; Burnt Norton; The Dry Salvages; Little Gidding

London Faber & Faber [through 1942] 1940 Four uniform first impressions of the separate appearances in pamphlet form of Eliot's wartime masterpiece. East Coker: 16pp; yellow paper wrappers printed in black (Near Fine, barring the usual toning) over white card covers, stapled. Light foxing throughout, the final 8pp uncut [Gallup A36c]. Burnt Norton: 16pp; aquamarine paper wrappers printed in black folded over stiff white covers; stapled. Fine, with just a hint of fading along the spine crease. [Gallup [A37]. The Dry Salvages: 16pp; pale blue paper wrappers printed in black folded over stiff cream (Gallup's first state) paper without the Adelphi watermark. Very Good or better, the wraps faded and lightly foxed, with a stain on the inner flap fold, but the pages bright and unmarked, except for an owner's inscription in a neat hand on the half-title [Gallup A39]. Little Gidding: 16pp; stiff mauve wrappers printed in black, stapled (Gallup's second state). Near Fine or better with traces of foxing to the back panel, internally bright and fresh [Gallup A42]. First Faber printing of the first title (East Coker first appeared in two forms associated with its publication in The New English Weekly.), first separate edition of the second title (first published in Collected Poems, 1936), and first editions of the latter two titles. East Coker is the village in Somerset from which Eliot's ancestors departed for the New World in 1669; Burnt Norton refers to the Gloucestershire manor house erected on the foundation of a house that burned to the ground in 17th century; The Dry Salvages is a group of rocks off Cape Ann, and so harks to the poet's New England roots, and Little Gidding was the manor in Huntingdonshire that was the destination of poets' pilgrimages as the site where Nicholas Ferrar founded an Anglican religious community in the mid-17th century. N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves.         Volshebnye Ochki [The Magic Glasses].

Moscow, Leningrad: Izdatel’stvo Detskoi Literatury 1940 - First Edition. Illustrated by V. Kurdov.(in Russian) 19pp [1]. 17 x 21cm. Original colour illustrated paper wraps, not the original staples. B&W illustrations. Even toning to paper stock, soiling, closed tears, pronounced dogearing and smudging to corners, shallow creasing, pencil squiggles to title. Even soiling to paper wraps, titling to first word coloured in by a child (presumably), pencil notations, creasing, rubbing to edges, significant reparation to foot and cap of spine. Marshak’s younger brother officially trained as a chemical engineer but tells the story of how, when he was a child, his brother would improvise stories to tell him and direct him as to which books he should read. Ilya suffered from health problems that developed from his factory work with dangerous chemicals. He co-wrote most of his books with Elena Segal, his wife, and his books are very sought after. It is also worth pointing out that Kurdov was taking a risk illustrating this book too and so his contribution cannot be overlooked. This book was obviously in the hands of children, having been well-read and coloured, but not destructively so. VERY RARE, unsurprising given the tiny print run of 5,000. More pictures on request.         Shell Shock in France 1914-18. Based on a War Diary.

8vo., original cloth. A near fine copy. First edition, inscribed by Myers "To Sir Wilson Jameson in warm regard, C.S.M". Wilson was Chief Medical Officer to the Ministry of Health and one of the architects of the National Health Service. From 1915 to 1919 Jameson was in the Royal Army Medical Corps, working mainly on hygiene and laboratory services, and serving in France and Italy. In 1915 Myers was given a commission in the Royal Army Medical Corps and in 1916 he was appointed consultant psychologist to the British armies in France. Frustrated with opposition to his view that shell-shock (a term he coined in an article in The Lancet) was a treatable condition, after the war he returned to his Cambridge position. But here too he was deeply dissatisfied, wanting wider opportunities for the development of his more practical interests, and feeling that official and academic circles showed little genuine interest in psychology. In 1922 he left Cambridge for London, thereafter devoting himself to the development of the National Institute of Industrial Psychology which he had founded with Henry John Welch in 1921. He was also involved in what became the industrial health research board and was the first president of the British Psychological Society.

In the Money: White Mule - Part II

Norfolk, CT: New Directions, 1940 First edition, first printing. Presentation copy; inscribed by Williams to Norman Mcleod: "To / Norman Mcleod / - with expectations / of the best for the new / novel - / William Carlos Williams / Oct 29/40". Publisher's indigo cloth, lettered in silver. Very good, with some light sunning and a slight lean to the spine, a touch of fraying to the spine ends, small spot to the rear board, light offsetting to the endpapers, otherwise clean interior. A very sturdy copy, signed by the author. Williams inscribed this copy of In the Money to his long-time friend and fellow poet Norman Macleod. In this inscription, Williams references Macleod's second novel, The Bitter Roots, which was published in 1941. The two men maintained a long-term correspondence, and Williams edited several of Macleod's collections of poetry. A fan of the younger poet's verse, Williams professed his admiration poetically with "A Poem for Norman Macleod." In addition to writing his own poetry and prose, Macleod founded the Briarcliff Quarterly magazine and was the first director for the Poetry Center at the 92nd Street Y. In the Money is the second volume in Williams' trilogy featuring the Stecher family. Inspired by his wife's family history and his experiences working in pediatrics, Williams uses this trilogy to examine the life of a European immigrant family in New York, and specifically focuses on Flossie, the Stecher's young daughter whose birth begins the trilogy. In the Money follows Flossie's father Joe Stecher as he establishes a printing company and moves to the suburbs of New Jersey as an endeavor to cultivate a more middle-class life for his family. This novel is preceded by White Mule (1937) and followed by The Build-Up (1952).. Inscribed by Author. 1st Edition.. Hard Cover. Very Good.

        L'espèce humaine

The first edition, of which there were no large paper copies - this copy with the right covers.Small tears, not serious, to the margins of covers and to foot and head of spine."There are no human beings, there is just humankind. It's because we are people just like them that the SS will be forever powerless before us." This fundamental work on the experience of the Nazi concentration camps was the third and last book published by the fleeting publishing house established by Marguerite Duras and Robert Antelme, her husband from 1940 to 1946.This first - unadvertised - appearance of the work sank without trace, selling barely a few copies. It was reissued the following year with a different cover by Robert Marin, but nonetheless suffered stiff competition from a number of other works on the subject that appeared immediately after the war. Nevertheless, as F. Lebelley notes, "at a time when there were many such accounts around, the power of this book - possessed of a singular sobriety - hit you with the force of a seminal text." The book is the work of an author who, according to Duras, "dove right into literature. This was Antelme's only book. Despite the praise and the prizes, L'Espèce humaine will remain the only work he'll ever write" (in: Duras, ou le poids d'une plume). The work was re-published, thanks to Albert Camus' efforts, ten years later (in 1957) by Gallimard and enjoyed a much wider circulation. Since then, the book has entered the history of literature as one of the most important works dealing with the painful necessity of thinking about the concentration camps and the human condition. It was thanks to this book that writers such as Antelme's friend Jorge Semprun could begin a new approach to the impossible task of writing about the camps. From 1947 onwards, Antelme noted in his foreword to the book: "we only just came back, bringing with us our memories, our experience still so fresh, and were filled with a frenetic desire to tell it as it was. But, from the very beginning, it seemed to us impossible to bridge the gap we faced between the words we had and this experience...How to keep ourselves from trying to explain how we'd found ourselves there? We were there still; and yet it proved impossible. Hardly had we begun our account, we found ourselves suffocating. What we had to say started to seem unimaginable then, even to ourselves."A rare and important copy, not in most national and international libraries, most notably the French National Library.         Winston Churchill Signed Photograph.

Black and white photograph of Winston Churchill. Boldly signed on the matte, "Winston S. Churchill." Double matted and framed. The entire piece measures 10.25 inches by 13.5 inches. Winston S. Churchill was a British statesman who was the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1940 to 1945 and again from 1951 to 1955. He was also an officer in the British Army, a non-academic historian, a writer and an artist. He won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953 for his overall, lifetime body of work. In 1963, he was the first of only eight people to be made an honorary citizen of the United States. Churchill was born into the family of the Dukes of Marlborough, a branch of the Spencer family. His father, Lord Randolph Churchill, was a politician who served as Chancellor of the Exchequer; his mother, Jennie Jerome, was an American socialite. As a young army officer, he saw action in British India, the Anglo-Sudan War, and the Second Boer War. He gained fame as a war correspondent and wrote books about his campaigns. At the forefront of politics for fifty years, he held many political and cabinet positions. Before the First World War, he served as President of the Board of Trade, Home Secretary, and First Lord of the Admiralty as part of Asquith's Liberal government. During the war, he continued as First Lord of the Admiralty until the Gallipoli Campaign caused his departure from government. He then briefly resumed active army service on the Western Front as commander of the 6th Battalion of the Royal Scots Fusiliers. He returned to government under Lloyd George as Minister of Munitions, Secretary of State for War, Secretary of State for Air, then Secretary of State for the Colonies. After two years out of Parliament, he served as Chancellor of the Exchequer in Baldwin's Conservative government of 1924-1929, controversially returning the pound sterling in 1925 to the gold standard at its pre-war parity, a move widely seen as creating deflationary pressure on the UK economy. Out of office and politically "in the wilderness" during the 1930s because of his opposition to increased home rule for India and his resistance to the 1936 abdication of Edward VIII, Churchill took the lead in warning about Nazi Germany and in campaigning for rearmament. At the outbreak of the Second World War, he was again appointed First Lord of the Admiralty. Following the resignation of Neville Chamberlain on 10 May 1940, Churchill became Prime Minister. His speeches and radio broadcasts helped inspire British resistance, especially during the difficult days of 1940-41 when the British Commonwealth and Empire stood almost alone in its active opposition to Adolf Hitler. He led Britain as Prime Minister until victory over Nazi Germany had been secured. After the Conservative Party suffered an unexpected defeat in the 1945 general election, he became Leader of the Opposition to the Labour Government. He publicly warned of an "Iron Curtain" of Soviet influence in Europe and promoted European unity. After winning the 1951 election, Churchill again became Prime Minister. His second term was preoccupied by foreign affairs, including the Malayan Emergency, Mau Mau Uprising, Korean War, and a UK-backed coup d'etat in Iran. Domestically his government laid great emphasis on house-building. Churchill suffered a serious stroke in 1953 and retired as Prime Minister in 1955, although he remained a Member of Parliament until 1964. Upon his death aged ninety in 1965, Elizabeth II granted him the honour of a state funeral, which saw one of the largest assemblies of world statesmen in history.

Thompson on back panel. Fine, in equally Fine jacket. Petersen A22.1d, A47.1b, and A52.2b. Burgess 99, p. 73. Fine-A superb set of Faulkner's masterful trilogy. The Snopes novels had their origin in the 1920s, in stories swapped back and forth between Faulkner and Phil Stone, an Oxford, Mississippi, attorney, about the rise of poor whites in social, political, and economic competition with the old Southern aristocracy. The series traces the rise of the Snopeses in Frenchman's Bend and Jefferson, Yoknapatawpha County, Mississippi. In The Hamlet, Flem Snopes, a ruthless redneck who marries the earth goddess Eula, is established as the trilogy's keystone. In The Town, Flem leaves Frenchman's Bend for Jefferson, where he gains control of the Sartoris bank and installs other scheming Snopeses in positions of power. Finally, in The Mansion, Flem is killed by Mink, the cousin he framed into a lengthy prison sentence. Malcolm Cowley, in his New Republic review of The Hamlet, judged it to be "a new sort of novel for William Faulkner, less somber, more easygoing and discursive. Except for a few short stories, it makes better reading than anything else he has written since Sanctuary." (The Literary Encyclopedia) And Burgess noted, "Turgid and difficult as he is, Faulkner is worth the trouble." Note: With few exceptions (always noted), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves.

        Notholirion campanulatum.

[London.]: Dulau & Co. Ltd. / The Royal Horticultural Society. [ 1940]. Handcolored lithograph, sheet size approximately 21 3/4 x 14 3/4 inches, matted to 25 3/4 x 18 inches. Area of the print that was exposed in the mat opening has evenly toned; otherwise very good, clean condition with bright color. This handcolored lithograph was published with Part VII of the Supplement to Henry Elwes 1880 Monograph of the Genus Lilium. This important botanical monograph highlights the extraordinary wealth of China and surrounding countries in the species Lilium. As Elwes' friend and collaborator Arthur Grove states in the introduction to the Supplement: "When Elwes prepared his Monograph about fifty species of Lilium were known to exist, and it was then the general opinion among experts that few remained to be discovered. With his customary acumen, Elwes himself expressed the view that 'The only regions from which much novelty can be expected are the Eastern Himalayas and the immense tract of unexplored and difficult mountain country which surrounds our Indian Empire on the north and east, and which lies round the head-waters of the Irrawaddy, the Bramputra, and the Yang-tse-kiang...' These words were written in 1880, some years before the botanical exploration of Western China began, and Elwes proved a wiser prophet than he knew. At that time, however, no one in England suspected that the area indicated by him was soon to prove richer in lilies than either Japan or Western North America." The first 7 parts of the Supplement were issued between 1933 and 1940. These were limited to 250 copies with a total of 30 handcolored plates drawn and lithographed by Miss Lilian Snelling. The large folio size is used to great advantage to showcase this stunning bloom, with botanical details at the lower left. The habitat of this lily is noted in the text (supplied in facsimile) as being Western China, north-west Yunnan and Northern Burma.
