von etwa 300 Blatt Orangenpapieren. Ca. 1940-1970.

Gewicht in Gramm: 500

London: Hodder and Stoughton Limited, [1940]., 1940. First edition. First edition. Former owner's neat address stamp at top of front fly leaf, light offsetting to front and rear endpapers else a very good, bright copy in dust jacket with some minor internal professional restoration at the spine ends. Returning to his hotel room after a late-night flirtation with a cabaret dancer, Graham is surprised by an intruder with a gun. What follows is a nightmare for the English armaments engineer as he makes his way home aboard an Italian freighter. Among the passengers are a couple of Nazi assassins intent on preventing his returning to England with plans for a Turkish defense system, the seductive cabaret dancer and her manager husband, and a number of surprising allies. This is a scarce book in the British edition. It's scarcity is attributed to copies being stored in the Hodder and Stoughton warehouse which was completely destroyed by German bombs during World War II. An attractive copy of a desirable book. Housed in a clamshell case with the dust jacket design imprinted on the cover.

Eddystone, PA: Baldwin Locomotive Works, 1940 - 1944., 1940 - 1944. First edition. First edition. 9 3/8" x 11 3/4" oblong, black cloth binder with titles stamped in gold gilt on the front cover, contains forty-eight 7 3/4" x 10" black & white photographs each individually housed in a transparent protective folder. Most of the photographs are dated and have identifying numbers at the lower corners of the images, as well as three with pen annotations and one with a "BLH" stamp to the verso. "BLH" most likely stands for Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton, the name into which the company eventually evolved. This remarkable album of company photographic images vividly portray Baldwin's wartime military WWII production, showing their tanks, artillery, railroad guns, rolling stock, and steam locomotives, as dictated by the War Production Board. This photo archive begins with a series of photos of the M3 Medium tank, including the General Lee, General Grant, M31 Tank Recovery Vehicle, 105 mm Howitzer Motor Carriage M7, along with the M4 Sherman Tank. The photographs show the tanks on maneuvers, negotiating steep hills, driving in formation outside the Baldwin Locomotive factory in Eddystone, and even the firm's president, Charles Brinley riding in an M3. This followed by a series of images showing the manufacture and delivery of the 8-inch Railway gun mount, the Barbette Carriage constructed so that it was capable of a 360-degree traverse, and 45-degree elevation, designed primarily for use as a coastal defensive gun. The photos portray the construction of the mountings, the barrels, and pumps necessary for elevating the gun, and the delivery ceremony when it was officially turned over to the Army Ordnance Department on Feb. 7, 1941. This gun was capable of hurling a 260-pound shell a distance of 18 miles. Brigadier General R. W. Case, Commanding General of Watertown Arsenal, and Major D.N. Hauseman, Executive Officer, Philadelphia Ordnance District officially accepted the gun from Charles E. Brinley, also pictured in the photos. This was the first railroad gun manufactured by Americans since 1918, and several are shown in various stages of manufacture on the factory floor. The concluding group of images show the fabrication of steam boilers for Steam locomotives and machined fittings, as well as rolling stock tenders, and switchers. Unfortunately for Baldwin Locomotives, the War Production Board ordered them to produce only steam locomotives and diesel-electric yard switching engines depriving them of the chance to develop their diesel locomotive line during the War. After World War II, they were too far behind EMD and Alco, so even after merging with Lima-Hamilton in 1950, they were out of business by 1956. The boiler pictured in a few of the images was for a 2-8-2 steam locomotive used by the Canadian Transcontinental Railway after the war.

John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1940 - 1940 Wisden Original Hardback

1940. Hi, This lot is a 1940 Original Hardback Wisden in Good to Very Good Condition. For a 1940 this is closer to very good than good, plus it has not had any restoration which is rare as many 1940s (due to their usual poor condition) do. The boards are clean but show some age and darkness , the gilt is starting to fade but original and better than many, more so on the spine than the front. Odd dot mark to the boards. Internally the front hinge is weak and you can see a bit of mesh at the top of the book for 2 inches. Internally the pages are very good. Without restoration. Better than many 1940s. Some weakness at page 32. This hardback was my Nemesis for 3 years and a hard book to find, pretty impossible in very good condition (Im still looking so let me know if you have one). I have an alternative 1940 Hardback if needed, it is a lot cheaper as in a lot poorer condition. Please ask.

First Screenplaywriting Course.; School for Writers, Hollywood Chapter, League of American Writers. Class notes

1940. Fine.. Spiral-bound notebook, approx. 5 X 8 inches, with 80 leaves of ruled paper; stiff brown card covers, with typed label affixed to front. All but one leaf virtually filled with original pencil notes, over 150pp in all, by a writer who attended the class taught by Michael Blankfort and John Howard Lawson, along with a number of guest lecturers. The notes are thorough, meticulous, legible, and fascinating, documenting in great detail the content of the lectures, with extensive verbatim quotes and summaries of analyses. The roster of teachers is impressive, comprising some of the most significant Hollywood screenwriters, a number of whom would be blacklisted not long after this course. The notes start with the course introduction by Blankfort, writer of "Blind Alley" who would later front for Hollywood Ten writer Albert Maltz on the script for "Broken Arrow" (1950). A good portion of the course notes present lectures by Lawson, another member of the Hollywood Ten; others represented are Jerry Zackheim, Sheridan Gibney (Academy Award winner for "Louis Pasteur"), Jerome Chodorov, Dudley Nichols (founder of the Screen Writers Guild, Academy Award Winner for "The Informer" as well as writer of "Stagecoach" and "Bringing Up Baby"), Robert Rossen, (Academy Award winner for "All the Kings Men") and Allen Scott (who wrote screenplays for several Fred Astaire/Ginger Rogers pictures). The content of the lectures as reflected in these notes provides a detailed examination of the screenwriter's craft, with contemporary examples from the day. Offered together with a second notebook containing 24pp of the same writer's notes from another course on playwriting taught by George Sklar, the playwright of social protest who was a board member of the Federal Theatre Project. He too would be blacklisted.

Harper & Brothers, 1940., New York - First edition. Fine, bright, square copy in in a bright, unfaded dust jacket with a few minor edge nicks at the edges. The 12th Dr. Gideon Fell novel. Martin Clarke is celebrating his acquisition and refurbishment of an old stately home by inviting a number of guests to stay for the weekend. The house has an unsettling history; two decades ago, the butler, a frail man of over 80 years, was killed when he uncharacteristically decided to swing back and forth from the chandelier, which then fell and killed him. Another report features a chair which leaps off the wall at the viewer. Clarke's guests have been invited to investigate the rumors of ghostly hauntings. The weekend begins when, as the guests are entering the home, one woman screams and claims that something has clutched at her ankle.something "with fingers." The host immediately tells the story of a former owner of the home whose death was met with such suspicion of witchcraft from the servants that the body lay as it fell for days. The weekend is off to a spooky start but then three witnesses agree that a gun jumped off the wall and killed a seated guest, with no hand holding it. Gideon Fell is called in to explain matters. An exceptional copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Pictorial Map of the Republic of Panama with the Canal Zone. Designed and copyrighted by Clark Teegarden and John F. Herman....

Seattle. Clark Teegarden and John F. Herman. No date. Ca. 1940s. Color pictorial / pictographic map / poster, archivally mounted on linen, image 29 x 46 inches on sheet 31 x 48 inches. Minor imperfections now minimising with archival backing, very good condition. A "painterly" example of a pictorial map with fine images of the history, natural and cultural life of the region, richly colored and placed within a strikingly designed flag border. There are two insets: the "Canal Zone and Vicinity" which is a detailed pictorial map at lower left and, at upper right, "Panama The Crossroads of the World". The pictographs highlight the animal life and characteristics of the area, including "the annual Zebra Swallowtail migration across Panama...," "old Indian gold mines," "the waters of Panama (Indian word meaning abundance of fish) are a mecca for game fishermen." The white sails of the yachts in the right foreground are used for charts of Weather Comparison, History Briefs (with information to July 9, 1941), and the Legend which includes such as Railroads, present locks and new third locks. "'With a partner in the 1940s he (Clark Teegarden) designed pictorial maps that in their era were quite popular, a Washington state map and a Panama Canal Map, the major reflections of his talent for painting,' said his son, John Teegarden of Seattle. 'They're neat because they have little illustrations for places in the state and in Panama. The Panama Map in particular was quite a success, and they got royalties. There were so many service and Canal Zone personnel there, and it was kind of a souvenir.'" (from Teegarden's obituary in the Seattle Times). A particularly sophisticated example of a pictorial map....

Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats.

London: Faber and Faber Limited,, 1940. Octavo. Original cream boards, spine lettered in red, pictorial block of two dancing cats to front board. With the dust jacket. Housed in a red quarter morocco solander box made by the Chelsea Bindery. With numerous colour and monochrome illustrations by Nicolas Bentley. Spine slightly toned, cloth a touch soiled, mild foxing throughout, text block strained in a couple of places but firm. A very good copy in a lightly toned and soiled jacket with slightly nicked and creased extremities and a couple of minor chips. First illustrated edition. An excellent association copy, signed by Eliot as Old Possum and inscribed on the front free endpaper to the Tandy family (Geoffrey, Doris "Polly", and their three children), whose second child Alison was one of the dedicatees: "To the Tandy family from O.P." Eliot initially met Geoffrey Tandy, a writer, broadcaster and scientist who worked at the Natural History Museum, in a pub. As their friendship deepened, Eliot would frequently visited the Tandys and they also kept up a regular correspondence. Throughout the 1930s, the family would be the first audience on which Eliot tested out the cat poems, both in letters and on visits to the family's Hampshire cottage. In addition, Geoffrey would be the first to present the cat poems to a wider public, as he read parts of Practical Cats on BBC radio on the Christmas Day of 1937, two years before the book was published.
