Richly illustrated with b/w photos. This is a rather spectacular and scarce book. Myerscough-Walker was a noted architect, draughtsman, designer and author in the 1930's. In this preWWII book he writes admiringly of Frank Lloyd Wright, Alvar Aalto, Le Corbusier, Gropius, Moholy-Nagy, Erich Mendelsohn. The book includes 80 photographed homes worldwide, including floorplans, of these and other architects of the new 20th century deco-moderne style.         THE MALTESE FALCON

The Modern Library circa 1939, New York - An early printing of Modern Library No. 45, Near Fine in a Near Fine jacket. Bound in green cloth with matching topstain and orange patterned endpapers. Spine cloth imperceptibly toned, spine gilt slightly dulled, with a few scattered spots of foxing to the side of the textblock. The jacket is a Near Fine example, reproducing the original artwork of the First Modern Library edition (1934). Price of 95 cents on the front flap, and mention of 265 titles both on the verso and rear panel; Toledano dates it circa 1939. Spine panel moderately toned, with some lighter toning, wear, and three tiny pin-sized holes along the flap folds. Overall, an attractive example of this classic detective novel, and the basis for three films: The Maltese Falcon (1931), Satan Met A Lady (1936), and the 1941 film noir starring Humphrey Bogart as Sam Spade. The success of the 1941 film propelled the book's popularity back into the heart of American culture; The Modern Library sold about 27,000 copies during the decade. Scarce.

        MISS. MODE

Vienna: Circa 1935-1939. A rare an unusual collection of original hand-painted fashion designs produced in Vienna before the outbreak of the Second World War. All seventeen designs are original artworks. Some feature ornate and carefully crafted crepe-paper whorls and rosettes, presenting the elegant fashion items as textured three dimensional forms. The plates comprise designs for a range of items and accessories - six pairs of shoes, ten pairs of gloves, and a parasol - all signed by the talented artist 'Kropej'. It is known that Miss Kropej studied under the care of Emmy Zweybrück-Prochaska, who operated a privately owned art and craft school in Vienna from 1915. The school taught a range of skills in the decorative arts, and was renowned for wonderful toys and textile design. The school closed in 1939 when Emmy Zweybrück- Prochaska was forced to emigrate for the United States where she continued to work in textile design and the illustration of children's books. This collection of work by Miss Kropej is a beautiful example of the haute couture of the era, exemplifed by restraint and simplicity of design alongside sensuous attention to detail. Collection of seventeen original hand-coloured designs of which four leaves feature attached crepe-paper oral ornaments (each leaf is watermarked 1935 and measures 210 x 298 mm.) The entire collection is in outstanding condition, preserved in an exquisite yellow cloth folding case with leather label lettered 'Mode' to the front board.

        Ken: The Insider's World

New York: 1938-1939. 39 issues, 7 April 1938 to 29 June 1939. Bound in four volumes, gilt-lettered black cloth, all original covers preserved. A complete run of the short-lived illustrated large-format magazine, known for its controversial and political content. Ken: An Insider's World was founded by David A. Smart and Arnold Ginrich, who earlier has founded Esquire. The first editor Jay Allen drew talent heavily from the political left. Quickly fired, he was replaced by George Seldes, who also proved too left-wing for advertisers. Some of the politicians featured with photo layouts were Presidents Calvin Coolidge, Grover Cleveland, Thomas Harding, and Franklin Delano Roosevelt, as well as many prominent German figures. Investigated in 1938 for being Communist leaning, Gingrich denied the magazine had any political slant. The magazine is an important window into the late 1930s, mixing the multitude of advertisements and their value as artifacts of material culture, with the dangerous world politics of the day, and the major figures involved in it. Ken's most notable publications were the articles by Ernest Hemingway on the Spanish Civil War that appeared in the first fourteen issues. In the first issue, it was stated that Hemingway was originally announced to be editor, but had taken no part in editing, nor in the formation of its policies. Hemingway, worried that their politics might be "liberal-phoney," insisted that a disclaimer be printed: "If he sees eye to eye with us on Ken, we would like to have him as an editor. If not, he will remain as a contributor until he is fired or quits." Some light rubbing, occasional browning of paper as usual.
