Ozoplaning with the Wizard of Oz

Chicago: Reilly & Lee. (1939). First. First edition, first issue. Quarto. Illustrated by Jno. R. Neill. Very small spots of sunning at the spine ends, else fine in an attractive, very good plus first state dustwrapper with slight chipping at the crown, and some faint fading on the spine. After L. Frank Baum's death the Oz stories were continued by license from the Baum family. Because they were reprinted so many times, determining the first edition of these titles requires either a team of Talmudically trained bibliomaniacs, or patience and the excellent Hanff and Greene bibliography. We employee the latter. An attractive copy, and very scarce in jacket. .

Die beiden englischen Weissbücher. 1. Botschafter Henderson berichtet über Hitler, Goering, Ribbentrop. 2. Die Wahrheit über die Deutschen Konzentrationslager in amtlichen Dokumenten Endgültiger Bericht von Sir Nevile Henderson über die Umstände, die zur Beendigung seiner Mission in Berlin führten : 20. Sept. 1939. Dokumente über die Behandlung deutscher Staatsangehöriger in Deutschland 1938-39 Lincolns-Prager London: His Majesty's Stationary Office, 1940. First edition. Softcover. g+ to vg. Quarto. 34,5 x 15.5 cm, 34 pp. & 44pp. Original stapled tan wraps with black lettering on cover. Publisher's device on title pages. 1. Final report by ambassador Sir Nevile Henderson, G.C.M.G., on the circumstances that led to the end of his mission in Berlin, September 20, 1939. The report covers the period of Henderson's tenure leading up to the invasion of Poland and the subsequent departure of the French and British ambassadors on September 4th. In his report Henderson explicitly mentions the positive aspects of the Hitler regime, e.g. invigorating the self respect of the Germans after the defeat in 1918, the reestablished discipline in Germany and the unification of the larger Germany not without pointing to the dark side of Hitler operations, his contempt for personal freedom of thought, word or the dead which represent the ideals of the developed democracy. The report is structured to include 85 numbered entries with Henderson's explicit apology for not being able to deliver a coherent report in view of the rapid and tumultuous development of events leading up to W.W.II. 2. Documents on the Treatment of German Citizens in Germany 1938-1939 released by the British government in view of the attitude displayed by the German government after the breakout of W.W.II. The purpose was to allow the general public to form an educated opinion about the treatment of German Citizens in Germany. The documents include correspondence of ambassador Henderson with Viscount Halifax, General Consul Gainer with ambassador Henderson, correspondence of other consulate staff reporting to the British government, records received by the Foreign Office from a German charity organization on October 28, 1938, and the testimony of a former inmate of the concentration camp Buchenwald on February 18, 1939. These documents draw a frightening view of the state of affairs in Germany and its concentration camps. Text in German. Moderate wear along edges of wrapper, minor chips, light soiling and foxing stains to cover, light creasing at upper and lower right corners throughout. Cover and block yellow age toned. tear to lower edge to spine ca. 5 cm., several pages with some foxing stains

Very Fine Official War Photograph signed on the image by Gort and Pownall, (1886-1946, Commander-in-Chief of the British Expeditionary Force, 1939-1940) and Sir Henry Royds POWNALL, (1887-1961, Gort's Chief of Staff)

1939 - showing Churchill seated leaning back in an arm chair near the fireplace, cigar in hand, and next to the wireless, in serious discussion with Lord GORT, who is standing but leaning forward towards him, while Sir Henry Royds POWNALL, fills his pipe at one side, who are both in uniform, a naval officer is shown reflected in the ornate mirror over the fire, flimsy on verso 'With the British Troops in France' and War Office stamp for release on 8th November, 10" x 12", B.E.F. General Headquarters, apparently in a French château, no date but 4th November former central vertical fold with almost imperceptible loss Churchill, of course, was still 1st Lord of the Admiralty. At this stage of the war, Germany's U-boats and destroyers were a far greater threat than her land forces - on 14th October the Royal Oak had been sunk in Scapa Flow. The B.E.F. was deployed on the French side of the Belgian frontier and involved in only occasional skirmishes with German troops. Churchill spent 2nd - 5th November in Paris in long talks, co-ordinating French and British policy, but made time to visit Gort for lunch on the 4th.

Instantaneous Emission of Fast Neutrons in the Interaction of Slow Neutrons with Uranium" (Szilárd, Leo and Zinn, Walter H.) AND "Energy Production in Stars" (Bethe) with "Energy Production in Stars II" (Bethe) AND "On Massive Neutron Cores" (Oppenheimer, Robert & Volkoff, G. M.) AND "Resonance in Uranium and Thorium Disintegrations and the Phenomenon of Nuclear Fission" (Bohr, Niels) AND "Production of Neutrons in Uranium Bombarded by Neutrons" (Anderson, Herbert L, Fermi, Enrico & Hanstein, H. B. AND "Static Solutions of Einstein's Field Equations for Spheres of Fluid" (Tolman, Richard) AND "The Molecular Beam Resonance Method for Measuring Nuclear Magnetic Moments" (Rabi, I, Millman, S., Kusch, P. & Zacharias J. R.) in Physical Review,

American Institute of Physics, Lancaster 1939 - FIRST EDITION, FIRST PRINTING of SLIZARD & ZINN's landmark "Instantaneous Emission of Fast Neutrons in the Interaction of Slow Neutrons with Uranium" confirmed 'instantaneous' neutron multiplication, showing that it meets the requirement for nuclear bombs. Some argue this is one of the most important papers in atomic/nuclear physics. Full volume inclusive of many other important papers.BETHE's seminal papers on neucleosynthesis, "Energy Production in Stars" and "Energy Production in Stars II" rely heavily on the development of quantum mechanics, going so far as to allow some classically forbidden reactions to occur. Bethe's work on nuclear reactions relied heavily on the development of quantum mechanics, and resulted in the occurrence of some classically forbidden reactions; and this same work led him to discover the reactions that supply the energy in stars. Realizing that a far more rapid increase "was needed to explain the vastily larger energy production in hotter stars," Bethe discovered "the CNO cycle and computed its properties, [telling himself that] to obtain a steeper energy dependence he had to find a reaction involving a higher potential barrier, i.e., a nucleus with a higher charge" (Brandt, Harvest of the Century, 261-262). Proceeding systematically through the Periodic Table, Bethe finally got to carbon. As he wrote "in the case of carbon the reaction works out beautifully" (ibid). Bethe's Nobel Prize represents the first time an astrophysical subject was recognized by the Nobel Committee. TOLMAN's "Static Solutions of Einstein's Field Equations for Spheres of Fluid" described his method for applying Einstein's field equations to static spheres of fluid. OPPENHEIMER & VOLKOFF applied Tolman's method to calculate the gravitational equilibrium of a neutron star and predict the conditions under which it will continue collapsing into a black hole. BOHR's "Resonance in Uranium and Thorium Disintegrations and the Phenomenon of Nuclear Fission" is Bohr's attempt to begin an explanation of nuclear fission. ANDERSON, FERMI & HANSTEIN's "Production of Neutrons in Uranium Bombarded by Neutrons" provided the first estimation of the magnitude of neutron multiplication showing that it meets the requirement for sustained nuclear fission. RABI, MILLMAN, KUSCH, ZACHARIAS's "The Molecular Beam Resonance Method for Measuring Nuclear Magnetic Moments" is the author's indepth paper on their use of NMR to determine nuclear magnetic moments. 939 is often spoken of as the second (think Einstein) most productive year in the history of physics. Together with Volume 56 (also listed), this volume includes an astonishingly large selection of important papers. CONDITION & DETAILS: Lancaster: American Institute of Physics, 1939. Royal 8vo. (10.5 x 8 inches); 267 x 203mm. Entire volume in contemporary full black cloth, gilt-lettered at the spine. Ex-libris with minimal markings. Very light and slight ghosting at the spine from the removal of a label -- all but invisible. Small stamp (covered) on the title page. Tightly and very solidly bound.         Karl Marx - Das Manifest.

        Ken: The Insider's World

New York, 1939. First edition. Some light rubbing, occasional browning of paper as usual. 39 issues, 7 April 1938 to 29 June 1939. Bound in four volumes, gilt-lettered black cloth, all original covers preserved. A complete run of the short-lived illustrated large-format magazine, known for its controversial and political content. Ken: An Insider's World was founded by David A. Smart and Arnold Ginrich, who earlier has founded Esquire. The first editor Jay Allen drew talent heavily from the political left. Quickly fired, he was replaced by George Seldes, who also proved too left-wing for advertisers. Some of the politicians featured with photo layouts were Presidents Calvin Coolidge, Grover Cleveland, Thomas Harding, and Franklin Delano Roosevelt, as well as many prominent German figures. Investigated in 1938 for being Communist leaning, Gingrich denied the magazine had any political slant. The magazine is an important window into the late 1930s, mixing the multitude of advertisements and their value as artifacts of material culture, with the dangerous world politics of the day, and the major figures involved in it. Ken's most notable publications were the articles by Ernest Hemingway on the Spanish Civil War that appeared in the first fourteen issues. In the first issue, it was stated that Hemingway was originally announced to be editor, but had taken no part in editing, nor in the formation of its policies. Hemingway, worried that their politics might be "liberal-phoney," insisted that a disclaimer be printed: "If he sees eye to eye with us on Ken, we would like to have him as an editor. If not, he will remain as a contributor until he is fired or quits."

        Proof of an External World

1939. First Edition . MOORE, George Edward. “Proof of an External World. Annual Philosophical Lecture. Henriette Hertz Trust. British Academy. 1939.” FROM: From the Proceedings of the British Academy. Volume XXV. London: Humphrey Milford, 1939. Octavo, stitched as issued, original tan paper wrappers; pp. 30. $1700.First offprint edition of this common-sense argument against scepticism, MooreÂ’s most famous work, in which he uses everyday logic to prove the existence of an external world.Written just as Cambridge philosopher George Edward Moore was preparing to retire from his professorship, “Proof of an External World” aims to provide proof of the existence of “external objects.” Here, Moore famously uses the example of his right and left hands and his ability to move and observe them as an argument for the existence of external objects. He, in fact, refers to this hand demonstration as a “perfectly rigorous” proof of the existence of external objects. Moore further argues that the existence of external objects proves, in turn, the existence of an “External World.” “Proof of an External World” is viewed as one of the most compelling works arguing against idealism and scepticism and offering instead plausible reasons for accepting a common-sense view of the external world. Published the same year as the first publication in From the Proceedings of the British Academy, Volume XXV. Interior fine, a bit of toning and light rubbing to edges of oversized wrappers. A near-fine copy.
