The very rare first printing of one of Camus' earliest literary productions, namely the first part of his famous Été à Alger, which was printed later the same year in his second book Noces (for which there is an advertisement on the inside of the back wrapper), in the second part of the very rare Algerian review Rivages.In all only two numbers of Rivages appeared, as it was interrupted due to the censorship at the beginning of the war. It was edited by Camus together with Gabriel Audisio, René-Jean Clot, Jacques Heurgon, and Jean Hytier and was published by Edmond Charlot, in Algiers. The aim of the review was to provide to the rest of the world with an insight in to the rich cultural life of the Mediterranean. When Été à Alger originally appeared in Rivages, Camus had only published one book ''L'Énvers et l'Endroit, 1937). Later in 1939, his second book (Noces), which is announced in the present volume of Rivages, appears

A very nice, near fine or better copy, in a very good or better copy of the rare [pc] illustrated white dustwrapper showing minimal use; 1 tear neatly mended on the verso of the back panel. An excellent, bright, unfaded example of this Davies highspot & in definite collector's condition. Davies account of the life & training of the Elizabethan boy actors, a consideration of their particular abilities & shortcomings, & discussion of the extent to which these actors set free or hampered Shakespeare in his female characterizations. Very scarce indeed. Most of the edition was pulped to accommodate the paper shortage of the war years. Perhaps a few hundred copies were actually sold which accounts for its infrequent appearance on the market. In the last twenty-five years, less than a dozen copies have surfaced in varying states of perfection or lack thereof, usually without dustwrapper, in both the Toronto & Montreal markets.. 1st Edition.

        Goodbye to Berlin.

      London: The Hogarth Press, 1939.. First edition. Small 8vo. 317, (1) pp. Recent dark blue full morocco, spine with raised bands, gilt rules and decoration to panels, gilt rules to boards, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. A lovely copy. The volume comprises six works: A Berlin Diary (Autumn 1930), Sally Bowles, On Reugen Island (Summer 1931), The Nowaks, The Landauers and A Berlin Diary (Winter 1932-3). In his preface Isherwood writes that the six pieces "form a roughly continuous narrative" and was originally conceived as a single "episodic novel of pre-Hitler Berlin". Three of the titles first appeared in John Lehmann's New Writing, Sally Bowles was published by the Hogarth Press in 1937. This is the first edition of the six pieces together.

        Goodbye To Berlin

      Hogarth, London, 1939. First Edition. Binding: Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good Condition. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. 'The six pieces contained in this volume form a roughly continuous narrative. They are the only existing fragments of what was originally planned as a huge episodic novel of pre-Hitler Berlin. I had intended to call it The Lost. My old title has been changed, however; it is too grandiose for this short loosely-connected sequence of diaries and sketches. Readers of Mr. Norris Changes Trains (published in the United States as The Last of Mr. Norris) may notice that certain characters and situations in that novel overlap and contradict what I have written here--Sally Bowles, for instance, would have run into Mr. Norris on Frl. Schroeder's staircase; Christopher Isherwood would certainly have come home one evening to find William Bradshaw asleep in his bed. The explanation is simple: The adventures of Mr. Norris once formed part of The Lost itself. Because I have given my own name to the "I" of this narrative, readers are certainly not entitled to assume that its pages are purely autobiographical, or that its characters are libellously exact portraits of living persons. "Christopher Isherwood" is a convenient ventriloquist's dummy, nothing more.'       Typed Letter Signed “Harry” as U.S. Senator, one page, 8” x 10.5”. United States Senator, Washington, January 11, 1939. To John W. Snyder, Manager, Reconstruction Finance Corporation, Saint Louis, Missouri. Snyder and Truman served together in the U.S. Army Reserves after World War I. Lightly creased at lower right. Two file holes in the blank upper margin and two staple holes in the upper left corner. Fine condition. Included is an unsigned carbon of Snyder's January 14th reply. In part, “The situation here is rather peculiar. Neither the ultra-conservatives nor the President want to come to a permanent break. From all indications the President is still highly popular in the country, but there are a great many people who are scared to death of the labor policy and of that national defense red herring which is now being pulled across the trail. “National defense, as you know, can be made the most popular thing in the country, but it is not necessary, for an adequate defense, to spend some extra billions of dollars, which I think is what the object is. I have some ideas of my own on national defense which I hope will be of use at the proper time. “Outside of the President, I think [Vice President John N.] Garner is the most popular man in Washington at the present time, and I think he is liberal enough to please all the liberals, and conservative enough so that fellows like [Virginia Sen. Harry Flood] Byrd and [N.C. Sen. Josiah W.] Bailey could swallow him. I hope you have business in Washington so that I can see you before you go to Hot Springs for that check-up. I think we have that matter just about straightened out.” In a handwritten postscript, Truman adds “Say hello to / Mrs. Snyder & [daughter] Drucie for me.” Truman’s observation that, other than FDR, Vice President “Garner is the most popular man in Washington” was confirmed in the Gallup Poll released on March 26, 1939. Gallup asked a cross-section of Democrats across the country whom they would favor for the Democratic presidential nomination n 1940 if FDR did not run. Gallup also stated that “Garner has become symbol of conservative sentiment.” In 1940, FDR was renominated and Garner, who had announced he was a candidate for the presidential nomination in late 1939, was dropped from the ticket, and replaced by Henry A. Wallace for Vice President. The “labor policy” that “a great many people are scared to death of” most probably refered to the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) signed into law by FDR on June 25, 1938. It established a national minimum wage of 25¢ per hour (then equal to 40% of the average wage in manufacturing), set a full-time standard work week of 40 hours with “time and a half” payment required for additional hours, and prohibited child labor in activities involving interstate commerce. On December 13, 1938, just four weeks before Truman wrote this letter, Elmer Andrews, U.S. Wage and Hour Administrator, disclosed that special attention was being given to complaints of serious violations of the FLSA by establishments in eight states including Missouri. Truman’s favoring an “adequate defense” was the topic of a speech he delivered ten months earlier.

        THE GRAPES OF WRATH

      New York: The Viking Press, (1939). First Edition. Hardcover. A beautiful Steinbeck presentation in a Good only copy. Second Printing Before Publication of this winner of the Pulitzer Prize. This copy belonged to screenwriter Jerry Cady (A WING AND A PRAYER; LAURA; FOREVER AMBER; CALL NORTHSIDE 777) to whom the author has INSCRIBED and SIGNED this book. According to Cady's daughter, the two got into a huge argument at Murphy's bar one night about the book and Cady said that this kind of thing didn't go on in America. Steinbeck then INSCRIBED the book on the dedication page "To Jerry Cady/As far as I know it, this is what happens to them/John Steinbeck." This book shows some evidence that it was carried to Murphy's on more than one occasion. The exterior shows minor edgewear, mostly at the bottom edge. The front endpaper is mostly pasted down to the front pastedown, but what can be seen shows the ink stamp of the Boulevard Circulating Library on Hollywood Blvd. The half-title page has a few small tears, and there is an old dampstain on the outer margin edge of the first few pages, including the dedication page, but not touching the Steinbeck inscription. Accompanying the book are a few pages of Cady's scrapbook that includes family photos and photos of his boat, his driver's license and Twentieth Century Fox ID card, and the 8 November 1948 headline of the LOS ANGELES EXPRESS: "Screen Writer Dies in Mystery." Cady died from an overdose of sleeping pills on his yacht off Catalina Island. He was nominated for an Oscar in 1945 for his screenplay for A WING AND A PRAYER.

Beautifully produced book, a monograph on the art and life of Russian artist and archaeologist Nicholas Roerich, with dozens of tipped on plates in both full color and in black and white. Indicates Part I on the title page; but most likely was the first in a series on Russian artists, as the book is complete in itself and the same as two copies located in COPAC. Tan cloth printed in brown, 190 pages. Covers spotted, spine ends lightly frayed, spine a bit sunned, internally better with good hinges, sound text block, very clean pages with just a couple instances of light finger soil to the margins, minor old insect damage to the far top margin of the final seven leaves, no names or other markings.

Internally also in excellent, very nice, clean, and fresh condition, a part from a horizontal crease to back free end-papers. Small circle-stamp to pasted-down front free end-paper and to title-page of volume 45 ("Bedford College for Women"). Discreet library-markings to upper margin of pasted-down front free end-paper. Pp. 161-228. [Entire volume: (´Vol. 45, 1939:) (4), 475, (1) pp.; (vol. 46, 1940:) (4), 478 pp.].. The very rare first printing of Turing's Ph.D.-thesis, which "opened new fields of investigation in mathematical logic". This seminal work constitutes the first systematic attempt to deal with the Gödelian incompleteness theorem as well as the introduction to the notion of relative computing. After having studied at King's College at Cambridge from 1931 to 1934 and having been elected a fellow here in 1935, Turing, in 1936 wrote a work that was to change the future of mathematics, namely his seminal "On Computable Numbers", in which he answered the famous "Entscheidungsproblem", came up with his "Universal Machine" and inaugurated mechanical and electronic methods in computing. This most famous theoretical paper in the history of computing caught the attention of Church, who was teaching at Princeton, and in fact he gave to the famous "Turing Machine" its name. It was during Church's work with Turing's paper that the "Church-Turing Thesis" was born. After this breakthrough work, Newman, under whom Turing had studied at Cambridge, urged him to spend a year studying with Church, and in September 1936 he went to Princeton. It is here at Princeton, under the guidance of Church, that Turing in 1938 finishes his thesis [the present paper] and later the same year is granted the Ph.D. on the basis of it. The thesis was published in "Proceedings of the London Mathematical Society" in 1939, and after the publication of it, Turing did no more on the topic, leaving the actual breakthroughs to other generations. In his extraordinary Ph.D.-thesis Turing provides an ingenious method of proof, in which a union of systems prove their own consistency, disproving, albeit shifting the problem to even more complicated matters, Gödel's incompleteness theorem. It would be many years before the ingenious arguments and striking partial completeness result that Turing obtained in the present paper would be thoroughly investigated and his line of research continued. The present thesis also presents other highly important proofs and hypotheses that came to influence several branches of mathematics. Most noteworthy of these is the idea that was later to change the face of the general theory of computation, namely the attempt to produce an arithmetical problem that is not number-theoretical (in his sense). Turing's result is his seminal "o-machines"; he here introduces the notion of relative computing and augments the "Turing Machines" with so-called oracles ("o"), which allowed for the study of problems that could not be solved by the Turing machine. Turing, however, made no further use of his seminal o-machine, but it is that which Emil Post used as the basis for his theory of "Degrees of Unsolvability", crediting Turing with the result that for any set of natural numbers there is another of higher degree of unsolvability. This transformed the notion of computability from an absolute notion into a relative one, which led to entirely new developments and in turn to vastly generalized forms of recursion theory. "In 1939 Turing published "Systems of Logic Based on Ordinals,"... This paper had a far-reaching influence; in 1942 E.L. Post drew upon it for one of his theories for classifying unsolvable problems, while in 1958 G. Kreisel suggested the use of ordinal logics in characterizing informal methods of proof. In the latter year S. Feferman also adapted Turing's ideas to use ordinal logics in predicative mathematics." (D.S.B. XIII:498). A part from these groundbreaking points, which Turing never returned to himself, he here also considers intuition versus technical ingenuity in mathematical reasoning, does so in an interesting and provocative manner and comes to present himself as one of the most important thinkers of modern mathematical as well as philosophical logic."Turing turned to the exploration of the uncomputable for his Princeton Ph.D. thesis (1938), which then appeared as "Systems of Logic based on Ordinals" (Turing 1939). It is generally the view, as expressed by Feferman (1988), that this work was a diversion from the main thrust of his work. But from another angle, as expressed in (Hodges 1997), one can see Turing's development as turning naturally from considering the mind when following a rule, to the action of the mind when not following a rule. In particular this 1938 work considered the mind when seeing the truth of one of Gödel's true but formally unprovable propositions, and hence going beyond rules based on the axioms of the system. As Turing expressed it (Turing 1939, p. 198), there are 'formulae, seen intuitively to be correct, but which the Gödel theorem shows are unprovable in the original system.' Turing's theory of 'ordinal logics' was an attempt to 'avoid as far as possible the effects of Gödel's theorem' by studying the effect of adding Gödel sentences as new axioms to create stronger and stronger logics. It did not reach a definitive conclusion.In his investigation, Turing introduced the idea of an 'oracle' capable of performing, as if by magic, an uncomputable operation. Turing's oracle cannot be considered as some 'black box' component of a new class of machines, to be put on a par with the primitive operations of reading single symbols, as has been suggested by (Copeland 1998). An oracle is infinitely more powerful than anything a modern computer can do, and nothing like an elementary component of a computer. Turing defined 'oracle-machines' as Turing machines with an additional configuration in which they 'call the oracle' so as to take an uncomputable step. But these oracle-machines are not purely mechanical. They are only partially mechanical, like Turing's choice-machines. Indeed the whole point of the oracle-machine is to explore the realm of what cannot be done by purely mechanical processes...Turing's oracle can be seen simply as a mathematical tool, useful for exploring the mathematics of the uncomputable. The idea of an oracle allows the formulation of questions of relative rather than absolute computability. Thus Turing opened new fields of investigation in mathematical logic. However, there is also a possible interpretation in terms of human cognitive capacity." (SEP)

Below this Huxley penned another inscription in 1945: "Why did you desert us before the shooting?" A.H., 1945." Cukor&#39;s famous Paul Landacre designed bookplate on the front pastedown. After moving to Los Angeles in the late 1930&#39;s, Huxley finally wrote his first Hollywood assignment in 1938; a treatment for a film based on the life of Madame Curie which Cukor was hired to direct, but by the time of its release in 1943, both the script & the director had been replaced. Cukor was the first director intended for the script Huxley wrote for Pride and Prejudice, but was again replaced. Although the two never collaborated successfully despite various attempts over the years, their friendship endured until Huxley&#39;s death in 1963. A Burgess 99 novel. Along with Point Counter Point [28], & Brave New World [32], After Many A Summer is considered the third part of Huxley&#39;s best work. This was Huxley&#39;s Hollywood Novel, "a satire and parable on modern civilization" - Baird & Greenwood, #1237. While researching a rare manuscript owned by the eccentric & wealthy Jo Stoyte, Jeremy Pordage, a young scholar accidentally stumbles across a solution to Stoyte&#39;s paranoid fears about his mortality. "At once comic and ironic, philosophic, religious, and erotic, and in its development both tragic and horrific, the narrative leads -- by way of the eighteenth-century manuscript journal of the 5th Earl of Gonister found by Jeremy among the Hauberk Papers -- to a conclusive anticipation of Stoyte and Obispo&#39;s [his live-in physician] search for the elixir of life." - Longman Companion to Twentieth Century Literature, p.7. Pride and Prejudice (1940). MGM production chief Irving Thalberg had bought the rights to a stage adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen&#39;s witty novel about romance threatened by class differences in 19th-century England, as a vehicle for his wife, Norma Shearer. Thalberg&#39;s sudden death in 1936 put the project on hold, although Louis B. Mayer considered following through with Shearer and Clark Gable, Melvyn Douglas or Robert Donat in the leads. Somewhere along the way, it was decided that George Cukor would direct. Then there was a switch in leading ladies, from Shearer to Greer Garson&#39; either because Shearer withdrew or, according to other sources, Mayer decided the plum part should go to his new protégé. As it turned out, the movie set Garson firmly on the path toward becoming Shearer&#39;s successor as MGM&#39;s reigning "Great Lady." Laurence Olivier, fresh from his successes in Wuthering Heights (1939) and Rebecca (1940), signed on as Garson&#39;s co-star reluctantly, because he was convinced that Vivien Leigh (whom he married in 1940) was the ideal leading lady. Olivier was further dismayed when Cukor, Leigh&#39;s favored director from Gone With the Wind (1939), was taken off Pride and Prejudice to direct Joan Crawford in Susan and God (1940). But the new director, Robert Z. Leonard, rose to the occasion and, with the benefit of a script polished by Huxley, turned Pride and Prejudice into a sparkling success. Huxley later claimed that he had accepted the assignment only for the money, and that his salary not only supported him in the U.S. for a year but allowed him to send funds to needy friends in England during World War II..
