        FINNEGANS WAKE

London: Faber and Faber, 1939. Large octavo. Gilt cloth. Usual tan offset from free endsheets to facing pages, otherwise a fine, bright copy in dust jacket, and uncommon thus. Half morocco slipcase and chemise. First British edition, trade issue, published on the same day as the U.S. trade edition from Viking, and the limited edition bearing Faber and Viking's joint imprint. One of a total first printing of 3400 copies, of which 950 copies in sheets were destroyed. This copy was quite possibly utilized for review, as the formal publication date ('4 May 1939') is stamped on the front dust jacket flap. "If Finnegans Wake is a key book, it is a key which needs a key. The Wake reminds me of the unfinished obelisk which lies on its side at Assuan, yet it has passages of unearthly beauty (particularly the last page) and huge comic scenes" - Connolly.

[Archive of One Hundred and Fifty Original Production and Publicity Still Photographs for:] OF MICE AND MEN

Los Angeles: United Artists, 1939. One hundred and fifty 7.5 x 9.5 inch (a few smaller) borderless black & white stills. Generally very good to near fine (a few corner creases, one or two with signs of oxidation). An unusually comprehensive archive, with trivial duplication, of the production and publicity stills for the 1939 film adaptation of Steinbeck's novel, directed by Lewis Milestone, starring Burgess Meredith, Lon Chaney Jr., et al. The still photographer for the film has generally been identified as Tom Evans. The collection offers unusually strong representation of the X, P, and H sequences, in many instances representing contiguous runs of images within the negative sequences. A considerable number of the stills bear the studio's mimeographed cut-lines affixed to the back, and a few bear rubber-stamped designations as "proof" prints. It would be difficult indeed to recreate such a near comprehensive collection of the stills associated with this film.

Gerhard Domagk (1895-1964) in 1927, working in the laborarory of the IG-Farben, began to study a particular group of dyes containing sulphonamides. Beginning with mice infected with streptococci he found a few days before christmas in 1932 convincing evidence of the curative value of sulphonamides, the first of which was the famous PRONTOSIL. It was the first of the 'magic bullets', that is to say drugs which could be aimed against specific organisms., just because they were dyes that stained them. Domagk's four year old daughter was the first human being on which the genial scientist tried out his discovery in a case of utter emergency: with great susccess. Prontosil had enormous success in treating pneumonia and the streptococal diseases, in particular puerperal fever. As a result numerous sulphonamide drugs were manufactured all over the world. These drugs have saved many thousands of lives throughout the world. In fact they became the chief weapon against many tethal infections until the advent of the antibiotics. Domagsk's present Paper marks THE INTRODUCTION INTO MEDICINE OF PRONTOSIL, the first drug containing sulphanilamide. For his achievement Gerhard Domagk was awarded the Nobel Prize for medicine in 1939." Vgl. Interlibrum, Cat. 255, Nr. 26. *** Engelhardt Bd.         [Photo Album]: Air Dispatch Ltd Mostly during World War II

Cardiff, Wales. 1940s. Oblong quarto. Measuring 11" x 8". String-tied brown leather over paper boards. Contains 347 sepia toned or black and white gelatin silver photographs measuring between 1.25" x 1.25" and 7" x 9", with captions and related ephemera. Album is very good with worn edges and tears on the tissue guards with near fine photographs with occasional creasing.A photo album kept by a pilot while working for Air Dispatch, Ltd. out of the United Kingdom beginning in the late 1930s, many focusing on the war years, and with a few later photos from the 1950s. The company specialized in shipping goods as well as providing special charter planes out of the Airport of London in Croydon and Heston Airport in Middlesex, and also from a hub in Cardiff, Wales. The album shows a variety of different planes with captions listing the type of vessel and the date that the photo was taken. The compiler also documented numerous crashes, as well as planes that were used by famous aviators of the time including Amy Johnson's Percival Gull aircraft with Johnson barely visible in the background. Johnson had just set a racing world record on a trip to South Africa. The album shows take-offs and landings, as well as mid-flight photographs taken from both the ground and while flying. One photo of a German plane with a swastika on the tail which reads, "Sept. 1st 1939 on the last regular scheduled airline run by Seutche Luft Hansa before the outbreak of war." One page shows the process of repairing a plane from a severe crash in 1940.Many of the planes in the early 1940s were involved in the war effort and the airports were used to repair and refuel before the next mission. A French Potez 63-11 plane is featured here after being "shot down near Eastbourne after a German raid on London Sept. 1940." Later a similar plane is seen that was part of a Free French Air Force. There are also wonderful aerial photos from the skies over England and the Channel. One photo reads, "cargo boat in mid-Channel from 2000 ft. Dec. 39;" another reads, "Croydon control tower seen while coming in to land 1939." A photo of Hawker Hurricane aircraft in a V-formation reads, "hurricanes over Wallington February 1941." The Hurricane, while often overshadowed by the Spitfire, was an important part of the British victory during the Battle of Britain. Many of the German planes at the base are referred to as "junkers." Laid-in are some larger photos measuring 6.5" x 8.5" of aircraft and one of the pilots of the Channel Islands Airways. Also present are a pad of unused "store requisitions" forms, a 1956 customs inquiry, a Rolls-Royce aircraft engine advertisement, and a charter plane advertisement.A rich and extensive look at the war time efforts of a merchant airline company. .

"AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS." A complete set of tear sheets of the first appearance of this short novel; serialized in three issues of ASTOUNDING STORIES, February, March, and April 1936, pp. 24-32; 125-155; 131-150. Copy-edited with extensive handwritten revisions in pencil by Lovecraft.

The tear sheets are in generally fine condition and are accompanied. by the front and rear covers of the first of the three issues of. ASTOUNDING in which the story appeared. Now housed in a custom. slipcase. (#151544). The revisions are of three types: (1) restoring many of the paragraphs to the longer length of the original manuscript; (2) minor corrections of spelling or punctuation and changes or insertions of just a few words; (3) insertions of major blocks of copy that were cut from the original text. Revisions of the first type were indicated by Lovecraft's enlarging the first capital letter of the added-on paragraph so that it was flush left instead of indented, and, when space permitted, by writing a pilcrow at the end of the preceding paragraph. The tear sheets have a total of 352 of these changes. Changes of the second type add up to 51. Changes of the third type are found mostly in the third installment, with none in the first and just one in the second installment, but thirteen in the last. These restorations of text cut by ASTOUNDING's editor, F. Orlin Tremayne ("that god-damn'd dung of a hyaena," as Lovecraft described him in a letter to R. H. Barlow), add up to over a thousand words. They are printed in small but neat script in the margins. This is one of three known sets of corrected tear sheets, all of which made their way (presumably through HPL's literary executor, R. H. Barlow) to August Derleth at Arkham House, where they provided the "revised" text for its appearance in THE OUTSIDER (1939). The story was written in 1931, submitted to and rejected by WEIRD TALES editor Farnsworth Wright for being "too long, not easily divisible into parts, not convincing -- & so on" (letter to S. Vernon Shea, 7 August 1931, Selected Letters, III, #487). In the same letter, Lovecraft goes on to remark, "Life has never interested me as much as the escape from life. However -- there is a region on the border betwixt weirdness & scientifiction in which I might conceivably experiment. Indeed, the Mountains of Madness belongs largely to this type." In several subsequent letters he referred to the novella as "my best story" or "my most ambitious story" and was considerably discouraged by its rejection. In writing to E. Hoffmann Price (9 April 1934, Selected Letters IV, #697) he referred to it as "a novelette representing my most serious endeavor -- Antarctic archaeology and polar mystery of a type that has haunted me since I was 11 years old. Its rejection by Wright in 1931 was a psychological setback doing much to freeze me into silence." In another letter written later that year to Price, however, he mused that this hiatus might have been beneficial in forcing him to detect and root out certain bad habits in his work. Lovecraft made no further efforts to sell the story but in 1935 Julius Schwartz, acting as his agent, took MOUNTAINS and THE SHADOW OUT OF TIME to ASTOUNDING's editor, Tremaine, who bought the pair, unread, for $595. The money came at a time when Lovecraft was perilously close to poverty but when he saw the tear sheets he was furious at the edits made by Tremaine. The damage to the text was not completely repaired until the discovery of a fair-copy typescript of the story years later. There is no known copy of a holograph version of this text, making the sets of hand-edited tear sheets the closest approximation to such a thing. "At the Mountains of Madness" presents what is probably the most complete and compelling vision of Lovecraft's cosmology, encompassing the Old Ones (extraterrestrial aliens who arrived on Earth millions of years ago and built vast, but now ruined, cities), the shoggoths (hypnotically controlled protoplasmic blobs who served them as unwilling slaves), the fungi from Yuggoth and spawn of Cthulhu (other aliens who arrived later and battled the Old Ones, driving them back to their first settlement in the Antarctic. The cosmology gradually unfolds in the course of an adventure story about a team of explorers visiting the Antarctic and encountering a gigantic mountain, taller than Everest, in the interior of which they discover relics of the Old Ones's civilization -- and confront a thawed-out shoggoth, turned monstrous without the hypnotic control of the Old Ones, who are all dead. The Antarctic setting has prompted some critics to compare Lovecraft's novella to Poe's NARRATIVE OF A. GORDON PYM, but they share little except the overall setting: a blank white canvas onto which could be conveniently painted whatever horrors the author chose. This short novel is one of the twenty-two tales selected for the Library of America's 2005 edition of Lovecraft's fiction.
