Bridges and Bridge Operating in New York City

Self-published 1939 - Isador Lubin's "Bridges and Bridge Operating in New York City", printed in 1939. It is 28x22cm, a 114pp, single-spaced typed and mimeographed (or blueprinted?) document of about 70,000 words. This also seems to be a copyright deposit copy, with no copy turning up in the massive WorldCat/OCLC catalog, and seemingly no copy available in libraries worldwide. In exhaustive detail Lubin discusses the operations and maintenance of movable bridges--and I mean all manner of things, from oiling to fuse boxes and lighting scenarios of control boxes and communicating with landside control; uniforms, courtesies, questions given in promotion examination to bridge operators (with answers), duties of bridge operators and tenders in operating drawbridges, distress signals and on and on. Very tightly and logically written. (The only references that I can find for a Isador Lubin places a person by that name as the Chief of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, right at this same time.)         Hitler's Mein Kampf. Illustrated by 200 Full page Plates. The Original Edition Entirely Unexpurgated. COMPLETE SET IN WEEKLY PARTS

Hutchinson in association with Hurst & Blackett [1939] 18 parts, sm. 4to., First Edition thus, with very numerous photographs (many full - page) in the text; original pictorial wrappers printed in colours, wire - stitched as issued, wrappers lightly chafed at extremities as usual, backstrip of four volumes parted but entirely complete, some light age - soiling, the set now preserved in a custom - made black buckram solander case with gilt back. COMPLETE SET OF THE FIRST UNEXPURGATED ENGLISH TRANSLATION OF HITLER'S INFAMOUS TREATISE. Translated by James Murphy, it is also the first fully illustrated version in English, with many photographs, illustrations, advertisements and examples of British war propaganda throughout. The printing style of covers varies due to production costs; parts 1 - 7 are printed in red, yellow and black; parts 8 - 18 in red and black only. The publisher's blurb on front covers is hardly understated: 'the blue - print of German imperialism'; 'the most widely discussed book of the modern world'. It is ironic that the next statement is 'Royalties on all sales will go the British Red Cross Society'. During publication purchasers could choose from five different binding cases: 'when this work is complete you will say 'what a fine edition!' No case is present here, but we have had the set preserved for the future in a handsome, specially commissioned black buckram solander case. COMPLETE SETS IN THE ORIGINAL PARTS ARE VERY SCARCE.

Il Mvseo Mvssolini (Il Museo Mussolini)

Roma, Italia: La Libreria dello Stato, 1939. Questa non è una edizione bilingue. Testo in italiano solo, non in inglese. Stampato nelle Officine dell'Istituto Poligrafico dello Stato, a Roma, 1938, XVI E.F. [Epoca Fascista, sedicesimo anno]. This is not a bilingual edition. Text in Italian only, not in English. Limitation unstated but unlikely to have exceeded 1,000 folio copies. Large folio, 14 x 10 inches. Later full green buckram, heavy-duty binding, with the original buckram backstrip neatly laid down along the spine. Backstrip with titling and ruling in a golden-green resembling gilt. Gently bumped spine head and tail, with sharp corners. The binding is immensely clean. The text block is firmly bound in. Attractive Japan-paper pastedowns and opposite FEPs. Fore- and bottom edges of the text block heavily deckled to a very handsome effect. The paper bearing the watermark of the publisher, La Libreria dello Stato, obviously influenced by the emblem representing the Partito Nazionale Fascista, the Italian fascist party. See, for example, the lower corner of the title page. With XVI and 202 numbered pages, including preface, introduction, catalog, general index, and addenda. With CXXIII full-page monochrome plates. Slight vertical rippling to one of the front blank FEPs. Half inch tear at top of one of the rear blank FEPs. A tiny stain at the lower corner of Plate C, entirely in the margin and deemed trivial. Else a very clean and rather tight copy. Gently read. Overall a handsome book. A Very Good Plus to Near Fine copy. Rare in any condition. The Mussolini Museum was created in 1925. The focus of this volume is on Graeco-Roman sculpture and reliefs from the museum's collection. This volume, from the library of Robin Symes, is an interesting association copy. The book label of Robin Symes was affixed to the lower left corner of the front pastedown, the label now deftly removed and preserved separately, slipped in. With thanks to Wikipedia for the following: "Robin Symes (born 1940/1941) is a now-disgraced British antiquities dealer who was unmasked as a key player in an international criminal network that traded in looted archaeological treasures. Symes and his long-time lover Christo Michaelides met and formed a business partnership in the 1970s, and Symes became one of Britain's most prominent and successful antiquities dealers. However, after Michaelides died accidentally in 1999, his family took legal action to recover his share of the Symes company's assets, and when the matter went to trial, Symes was found to have lied in his evidence about the extent and value of his property; he was subsequently charged with and convicted of contempt of court, and sentenced to two years' imprisonment. Ongoing investigations by Italian authorities revealed in January 2016 that Symes' involvement in the illegal antiquities trade was even more extensive than previously thought, and that he had hidden a vast hoard of looted antiquities in 45 crates at the Geneva Freeport storage warehouse in Switzerland for 15 years, in order to conceal them from Michaelides' family.". First Edition. Buckram. Very Good Plus. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. Association Copy.

Tannenberg. Deutsches Schicksal - Deutsche Aufgabe. Ganzleder-Luxusausgabe

Oldenburg / Berlin, Gerhard Stalling Verlagsbuchhandlung, 1939 - (noch zu Nr.11671:) . . Step By Step, the New Zealand General Assembly's pre-WWII copy of the first edition

London: Thornton Butterworth Limited, 1939. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is the first edition of Churchills last book published before the outbreak of the Second World War and includes 82 newspaper articles focused on foreign affairs written by Churchill at the end of his "wilderness years" between March 1936 and May 1939. This copy boasts compelling provenance, having belonged to the library of the New Zealand General Assembly (Now NZ Parliament) and bearing the gilt stamped General Assembly Library device on the front cover and lower spine, as well as the sticker of the New Zealand General Assembly Library affixed to the front pastedown. Significantly, this copy is ink stamped 9 AUG 1939 on the front pastedown, 22 days before Britain declared war on Germany after the Nazi invasion of Poland. New Zealand acted in its own right by formally declaring war on Germany on 3 September, in concert with Britain. Of particular significance to New Zealanders, that same day, Churchill returned to his First World War post as First Lord of the Admiralty. Many in New Zealand felt antipathy toward Churchill for his First World War stint as First Lord (1911-1915). Churchill had conceived and promoted a strategy for seizing control of the Dardanelles Strait and attacking the capitol of the Ottoman Empire. During this offensive New Zealand troops made their first major effort of the First World War as part of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC). The outcome was strategic failure and slaughter on the Gallipoli Peninsula. Churchill was scapegoated and forced to resign. He spent his political exile as a lieutenant colonel leading a battalion in the trenches. By the war's end, Churchill was exonerated by the Dardanelles Commission and rejoined the Government. History would corroborate the soundness of Churchill's conception, and that failure accrued to deviation and poor execution by others. But these facts did Churchill no good at the time and the stigma of the Dardanelles would linger, particularly in the antipodes, whose soldiers bore a disproportionate share of the casualties. Nine months after WWII began, on 10 May 1940, Churchill would replace Neville Chamberlain as Prime Minister. Perhaps nothing would expunge the taint of Gallipoli, but Churchill would leave an eclipsing impression of competent and steady leadership on the next generation of New Zealand soldiers and civilians. The war that defined, and was defined by, Churchill also profoundly shaped New Zealand, whose sacrifice far exceeded that of the First World War. About 140,000 New Zealand men and women served. WWII claimed the lives of one in every 150 New Zealanders. New Zealand was involved for all but three of the 2179 days of the war a commitment on a par with only Britain and Australia and fought globally, from Egypt, Italy, and Greece to Japan and the Pacific. Ironically, just as New Zealand could never quite exonerate Churchill for Gallipoli, Step By Step is the work that encapsulates and exonerates his pre-WWII anti-appeasement efforts. As a measure of Churchill's prescience and ultimate vindication, upon publication, Labour leader Clement Attlee - a political opponent who would replace Churchill as Prime Minister in late July 1945 - wrote to Churchill, "It must be a melancholy satisfaction to you to see how right you were. This unique copy of the first edition is in very good overall condition. The binding is tight and unfaded, with strong color and bright gilt. The binding shows a slight forward lean (ostensibly the result of having been read by members of the New Zealand Assembly) with modest scuffing and light wear to extremities. The contents remain respectably bright and clean with no spotting. The page edges show mild age-toning with light dust soiling to the top edge. The only other ex-library mark found other than those already detailed is an empty and unmarked card pocket affixed to the rear pastedown.         Another Mexico.

New York: Viking Press, 1939. First edition. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by Graham Greene on the title page. In very good condition with a small name to the front free endpaper, without the dust jacket. In Another Mexico Mr. Greene causes to emerge a picture of Mexico that is alike vivid in detail and absolutely convincing as a whole. This is mainly due to the high merit of his writing; he joins to a remarkable command of English an equally remarkable talent for breathing life into the strange human figures which people his somber canvas. No less remarkable is his attitude. He never condescends. He is no mere grouchy Anglo-Saxon up against Latins and aborigines beyond his understanding. He exudes no superiority" (The New York Times).
