Swanee River (Original screenplay for the 1939 film, director's copy)

Los Angeles: Twentieth Century-Fox, 1939. Revised Final draft script for the 1939 film. Presentation copy belonging to director Sidney Lanfield, with his name in gilt on the front board, and profuse notations in holograph ink and pencil throughout. A biographical musical of distinguished American songwriter Stephen Foster. Foster (Ameche) is romantically involved with a pretty southern belle, living in Kentucky. His songwriting career flourishes when he sells a song to the famous minstrel E.P. Christy (Jolson). When the Civil War erupts, Foster is accused of siding with the Confederates, so he and his family flee to the North, where he begins to drink away his woes. Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Music. The soundtrack features some of Foster's best, including the title song, "Camptown Races," "Oh, Susanna" and "My Old Kentucky Home." Set in Kentucky. Navy blue leather presentation binding with gilt spine and front titles. Title page present, dated August 15, 1939, noted as Revised Final, with credits for screenwriter Foote and Dunne. 156 leaves, with last leaf of text numbered 167. Mimeograph, with blue revision pages throughout, dated variously between 8/17/39 and 10/20/39. Pages Very Good plus, binding Very Good, front joint shaky with a short split.

Air France "Nova et Vetera" Sur La Vieille Terre des Chemins Nouveaux

Paris: Lewitt-Him, 1939. unbound. Poster, original lithograph 24 1/2 x 39 inches. This wonderful poster by Air France titled "Nova et Vetera", which in Latin means "The old and the new", is one of the series of advertising posters and world maps that Lucien Boucher created for Air France in 1939. The art deco style poster features a map of the world showing the various airlines routes of Air France in 1931. Of note is the route to Hong Kong, which the airlines had just begun operating.<br><br>The whole world is filled with beautiful illustrations, including local scenes, animals, birds topography and elements specific to each continent. airplanes are seen flying in the sky with a curios airplane shadow near Europe, while the oceans are filled with sea monsters and ships, which suggest the contrasting ancient shipping routes with the new air routes, as the title indicates. A beautiful large compass rose is illustrated in the Atlantic Ocean with a smaller one appearing in the Indian Ocean and a ornate title cartouche covers the northern parts of Asia.<br><br>Travel posters until this time were usually meant to be used by the travel agents and only depicted a particular destination or product or airline. These type of posters revealed the airlines entire network covering the entire world in a beautifully appealing manner. They soon became highly collectible works of art and increasingly harder to find, given the limited copies printed for agents.<br><br>This poster was printed in France by Perceval in Paris. The poster is in good condition. Some portions of the margin have been partially replaced and overpainted. Poster has some repaired tears, creases and restoration in margins. Repaired pin holes in bottom right corner. Backed with linen.<br><br>Lucien Boucher (1889 - 1971) was a French illustrator, engraver, poster artist and draftsman who specialized in illustrating books and posters. He began his career as a caricature artist and later moved on to create posters for the film and advertising industry. Many of his early lithographs were inspired by surrealism. His best known works are a series of advertising posters and world maps for Air France. This is an example of some of his best work.

        Brief Pageantry

Brooklyn, New York: Comet Press, 1939. First printing. With an inscription "to President and Mrs Roosevelt with all best wishes Jehanne de Mare" on the half title page. It turns out that Eleanor Roosevelt actually received (presumably) this copy and wrote about it in her newspaper column, "My Day", for January 17, 1939: "There is a book of poems called, "Brief Pageantry," which I have just received, written by a young girl, Jehanne De Mare. She used to be at the Todhunter School, so Miss Dickerman is particularly interested. In addition, there is a portrait of the author by one of Miss Dickerman's other graduates, Andrea Dowd, which illustrates the notice which accompanies the book. It is a great satisfaction and interest when young people, whom you watched develop, begin to do creative work of their own." The boards are a bit bowed and tanned. Otherwise fine in a tight binding.. Signed by Author. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

        The Local.

London: Cassell & Co, Ltd, 1939 - Octavo. Original grey boards, titles to spine and front cover in red and black. With the original glassine dust jacket with paper flaps, as issued. Some faint toning to boards; an exceptional copy in the scarce dust jacket, with partial loss to panels and spine at head and foot. With 15 four-colour lithographic plates, including one double-page by Edward Ardizzone. First edition, sole impression. "Ardizonne's illustrations are generally concerned with contemporary life untouched by political, religious or ideological conflicts. His approach is not satiric or moralistic but autobiographical, and his drawings are representational and humourous and demonstrate his affection for people" (The Dictionary of 20th Century British Book Illustrators). The book's scarcity is explained by Maurice Gorham in his Foreword to their follow-up book Back to the Local (1949): "[The Local's] career ended when unsold copies, sheets, and plates of the drawings went up together in the burning of Cassells' premises in Belle Sauvage Yard [during the Blitz]".         Verve, the French Review of Art, Volume Two (2), Numbers Five (5) and Six (6)

Paris: Éditions de la Revue Verve, 1939. This is the English language edition of Verve, an artistic and literary quarterly, Vol. 2, Nos. 5-6, Paris, July-October 1939. Note that two of the articles are in French: La tiare écrite and Visages réels ou imaginaires. Special double World's Fair issue. Printed in Paris. Typography and process color work, Imprimerie des Beaux-Arts, heliogravure in colors, Draeger Frères, heliogravure in black and white, Néogravure Lithography, Mourlot Frères. 14 x 10.5 inches. Cover illustrations back and front by Aristide Maillol. Wear along the edges of the wrappers. Note that the front cover is completely detached and has two tears to the top left corner and a large crease at the bottom right corner. The spine has largely perished. The sewn threads of the binding of the text block are loosening. With 178 pages, many of which are unnumbered. (A printer's error lists p. 120 as p. 20.) Contents include Texts, Paintings, Illuminations, Lithographs in Color, Drawings, Paintings, Statues and Photographs. With all color lithographs called for, including Guys (4), Braque, Rouault, Derain (2), Leger, Bonnard (2), Matisse (2) Klee, and bas-reliefs (2). Also with numerous color and monochrome illustrations. We can find no missing illustrations or pages. The interior is generally very clean except that, oddly, at some point in the past, two sheets (illustrations?) were crudely taped in, one to the reverse of the front wrapper and the other to the reverse of the rear wrapper. Those taped-in sheets are now missing and, as the tape decomposed and yellowed over the years, have left crude tape remnants. The tape marks transferred to the front title page and to the rear FEP. In any case all the color lithographs are impressively clean and intact, as are the illustrations in general. Rated a Good Plus copy. One of France's most famous art periodicals, and published from 1937 to 1960, Verve is renowned for the quality of its production and the breadth of subject matter.. First American Edition. Paperback. Good Plus. Folio - over 12" - 15" tall.

In Stalin's Secret Service (First Edition)

New York: Harper and Brothers, 1939. First Edition. First Edition. In a Very Good example of the rare dust jacket. Walter Krivitsky (1899-1941) was an intelligence officer for the Soviet Union, notable for revealing plans of a Nazi-Soviet nonaggression pact (signed in 1939) before he defected only weeks before the outbreak of World War II. With the help of journalist Isaac Don Levine and literary agent Paul Wohl, Krivitsky produced this inside account of Stalin's underhanded methods, appearing first in serial form in April 1939 in the "Saturday Evening Post." After the People's Commissariat for Internal Affairs (NKVD) were notified of Krivitsky's literary treason, efforts were made to silence him. On February 10, 1941, he was found dead in his hotel room in Washington, D.C., with three suicide notes by the bed. David Clay Large reported, in his 1991 book "Between Two Fires: Europe's Path in the 1930s" that just prior to his death, Krivitsky confided (to a friend): "If I am ever found apparently a suicide, you will know the NKVD caught up with me." Very Good plus in a Very Good dust jacket. Slight spine lean, tiny bruise to the front board, light bumped to a couple of corners. Moderate wear to the jacket extremities, moderate rubbing overall.

First published in Germany in 1924 and widely considered to be one of the most influential works of 20th-century German literature, MAGIC MOUNTAIN reflects Mann's experiences and impressions when his wife, who was suffering from a lung complaint, was confined to Dr Friedrich Jessen's "Waldsanatorium" in Davos, Switzerland, for several months during the outbreak of the First World War, the conflict and aftermath of which led to major revisions to this book. Ex-library copy, though not from a circulating library and therefore without many of the usual markings and with none at all on the covers. Donation label on pastedown identifying this copy as being "From the Books and in Memory of Lillian Morgan Saminsky, American Poet and Novelist," with "'The Art of the Novel'--collection 72.36" written in ink above, and "Historical Society" and "Withdrawn" stamps below. Small library blindstamp on title page and another withdrawn stamp on copyright page, neither of which affect any text. Spine slightly dulled, front cover a bit mottled, otherwise about very good.         [Photo Album]: World War II and Baseball (Yankee Stadium and Fenway Park)

New York, Boston. 1939-1943. Oblong folio. Measuring 11.5" x 15". String tied black leather over papercovered boards with "Photographs" stamped in gilt on the front board. A collection of 176 black and white photographs measuring between 3.25" x 3.25" and 4.5" x 3.5", without captions. A photo album kept by a man who served with the 181st Infantry in the years before and during World War II at Camp Edwards in Massachusetts, along with other locations, possibly in the South. The photos depict typical images of camp life: men shaving in tents, reading letters, and cleaning their clothes, as well as drilling, marching, and target practice. Two photos show an African-American soldier and his family as well as some of soldiers goofing off in costumes. Interspersed throughout the album are photographs of professional baseball games at Yankee Stadium and Fenway Park with images of Chicago Cubs pitcher Dizzy Dean and Cleveland Indians shortstop Lou Boudreau warming up, along with baseball comedian Al Schacht entertaining fans in costume with his oversized glove. Other photos show the crowds in the stands and studying programs, keeping score, and walking around the grounds. Eleven additional photos were taken at Yankee Stadium during the third game of the 1943 World Series, showing parades on the field, fans catching a ball hit into the stands, and the scoreboard showing the final score, Yankees 6, Cardinals 2. An interesting assemblage of photos depicting the American home front during the war years and one fan's enthusiasm for baseball. .
