Japanese Album of Photographs Showing the Construction of the Atelier of Kodama Kibo and a Teahouse for Yamada Soyu

Album containing approximately 142 black and white photographs, the first portion showing the construction of the residence/atelier of Kodama Kibo, an artist from Hiroshima who needed a larger space to accommodate his many students and disciples, the second portion with photographs and elevations showing the construction of a teahouse for Yamada Soyu, a tea ceremony grand master, together with four laid-in tissue paper sheets of elevated architectural drawings in pencil. Many photographs with hand-written captions in Japanese. Some pages with loose or missing photos, others mounted on album leaves with photo corners. 4to. Fabric-covered boards with rubbed gold-painted title to front cover. (n.p.) circa 1939. Kodama Kibo was born in Hiroshima in 1898, studied under an important Meiji-period artist, Kawai Gyokudo, and exhibited at the Teiten and Nitten shows. He took on numerous students during his lifetime, and with a group of them was responsible for restoring the dragon on the ceiling of the Benten-do Temple, which was damaged during World War II. Yamada Soyu was the 8th Grand Master of the Sohen-ryu school for Japanese tea ceremony, and taught in Turkey early in his career, counting among his students the future Atatürk. This album provides an interesting glimpse into pre-war Japanese construction techniques with designs and buildings created for two important figures. The album itself may have belonged to an architect who worked on the projects.

Autograph letter signed ("Sigm. Freud"). London, 27. IV. 1939.

1939. Large 4to. 1 p. With autogr. envelope. Short but comprehensive letter to the Dutch writer and journalist Cornelis de Dood, about his just-published final work, "Moses and Monotheism". Freud apologizes for being unable to write more about Dood's "interesting letter", but his poor health will not permit to do so. He expresses his conviction that it is hard to believe that Moses found circumcision practiced among Jews, since all accounts indicated that the ritual was of Egyptian origin. - On headed paper.

Autograph letter signed to his father.

Autograph letter signed ("Dylan"), to his father ("Dear Dad"), written a few days before the outbreak of the Second World War. Four pages, 8vo, with autograph envelope. The letter thanks him for the "Grand, magnificent dictionary...It is a most valuable thing for me to have", he expresses pleasure that his father enjoyed, his recently published The Map of Love a collection of poetry and prose. ("Do please tell me what you liked best in it, & what seemed most difficult & unattractive.."). He refers to reviews of the work although he has only read one himself, which is not surprising as the book's reception was completely overshadowed by the build up to war. He describes the first batch of dental work he had received the day before. He follows with a discussion of unfolding world events..."These are awful days, & we are very worried. It is terrible to have built, out of nothing, a complete happiness - from no money, no possessions, no material hopes - & a way of living & then to see the immediate possibility of its being exploded & ruined & If I could pray, I'd pray for peace. I'm not a man of action; & the brutal activities of war appall me - as they do every decent-thinking person. Even here the war atmosphere is thick & smelling: the kids dance in the streets, the mobilised soldiers sing Tipperary in the pubs, & wives & mothers weep around the stunted memorial in the grist." Germany invaded Poland three days later. Very good, slightly worn at folds.

A large archive of material featuring ten (1 autogr. and 9 typed) letters to Wsevolode Grünberg and a short autograph note by Einstein, an ALS by Elsa Einstein and 2 TLS by Helene Dukas. Accompanied by a large archive of Grünberg's papers, consisting of well over 1,000 pages of material including some of his original drawings for his hydrofoil improvements, copies of his patents, etc. Princeton (NJ), Peconic, New York and Saranac Lake (NY), 1939 to 1948.

1939. I: Albert Einstein. Mostly 4to. Altogether 11 pp. II: - Elsa Einstein: 8vo. 2 pp. - III: Helene Dukas. 4to. 2 pp. Grünberg, who later in life changed his name to Waldemar A. Craig, was an aeronautical engineer who developed an important design for the hydrofoil. The letters accompany a large archive of Grünberg's papers, consisting of well over 1,000 pages of material including some of his original drawings for his hydrofoil improvements, copies of his patents, (including a large dossier of declassified tests performed in the years immediately following WWI), photographs, correspondence, and other related documents and ephemera. - Grünberg, the nephew of a close friend of Einstein, appears to have become acquainted with Albert and his second wife Elsa sometime in the late 1920s or early 1930s, if not personally, by correspondence. In an undated letter from Berlin, written sometime before 1932, Elsa Einstein commented to Grünberg: "I am assuming you are just as kind and clever as you uncle, our dear friend. My husband and I were so glad having been able doing this small favor for you. Mr. Dunne wrote a most gracious note to us from Florida. In particular I want to thank you for the delicious grapefruits [...]" and adding "Feel free to call on me anytime, if you think I could be of help. Please be sure and do". - Apparently Grünberg took her advice, and travelling to the United States in 1939 approached Einstein for an introduction to fellow engineers in the U. S. in order to demonstrate his hydrofoil designs. The two met in June 1939 at the home of Irving Lehman in Port Chester, New York. - In addition to the introduction to the American engineering community, Einstein also agreed to handle a complex inheritance matter for Grünberg. On 1 July 1939, the same day he recommended Grünberg to his American associates, he wrote to him that he had written "a most insistent letter to Mr. Plesch in which I suggested to name an arbitrator in the inheritance matter who would be agreeable to you as well as to me and who could personally communicate with Mr. Plesch and yourself". Enclosing the letter to Dr. Lewis, Einstein advised, "I cannot understand though, how you could succeed to find a position here without a valid residence permit. I urge you to carefully investigate this subject prior to making use of the enclosed letter". Einstein continued to assist Grünberg with the inheritance issue, acting as a go-between Grünberg in the U. S. and Mr. Plesch in France. - Despite some annoyances, Einstein did what he could for Grünberg both for his inheritance and his scientific pursuits - Grünberg's personal papers concern his research on his hydrofoil designs which he first developed in France. The archive includes some of Grünberg's original drawings demonstrating applications for his design as well as some manuscript calculations in his hand, some original U. S. patent certificates for several inventions, one German patent awarded to him in 1930, original photographs, likely from the early 1930s, and several magazines including Popular Science and others discussing Grünberg's work and designs. - Detailed description available upon request.

Forces in molecules’, pp. 340-3 in Physical Review Vol. 56, No. 4, August 15, 1939. Original printed wrappers

Lancaster, PA & New York, NY: American Institute of Physics 1939 - Large 8vo. Complete journal issue in original printed wrappers (rust stains from staples, spine a little worn with two small areas of loss not affecting printing). FIRST EDITION of Feynman’s undergraduate thesis at MIT, “a fundamental discovery” published in The Physical Review when he was just twenty-one. “Forces or energy—that was the choice for those seeking to apply the quantum understanding of the atom to the workings of real materials. At stake was not mere terminology but a root decision about how to conceive of a problem and how to proceed in calculating . . . As Feynman conceived the structure of molecules, forces were the natural ingredients. He saw springlike bonds with varying stiffness, atoms attracting and repelling one another. The usual energy-accounting methods seemed secondhand and euphemistic. [He demonstrated that] the force on an atom’s nucleus is no more or less than the electrical force from the surrounding field of charged electrons—the electrostatic force. Once the distribution of charge has been calculated quantum mechanically, then from that point forward quantum mechanics disappears from the picture. The problem becomes classical; the nuclei can be treated as static points of mass and charge. Feynman’s approach applies to all chemical bonds” (Gleick). His discovery, now known as Feynman’s theorem or the Feynman-Hellmann theorem, has endured as an efficient approach to the calculation of forces in molecules. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Belle provenance.

'Rogue Male' 1st UK Edition 1939

A first edition, first printing published by Chatto and Windus in 1939.A very good copy indeed with some indiscriminate light marks to the rear board and some rubbing to extremities. The red titles are still vibrant to the spine. Some off-setting to end-papers with absolutely no inscriptions. The pages are very clean and fresh and the book itself appears unread. One of the rarest war-time novels and the basis for the motion picture featuring Peter O'Toole, as well as the brilliant radio adaptation narrated by Michael Jayston

Tannenberg. Deutsches Schicksal - Deutsche Aufgabe. Ganzleder-Luxusausgabe

Oldenburg / Berlin, Gerhard Stalling Verlagsbuchhandlung, 1939. (noch zu Nr.11671:) . .
