        Barbarians at the Gate

Gollancz 1939 - Gollancz, London, 1939, first edition. Woolf (1880 – 1969) was an English author, publisher and civil servant, and husband of author Virginia Woolf. In 1917, the Woolfs’ bought a small hand-operated printing press and with it they founded the Hogarth Press. Leonard was literary editor of “The Nation and Atheneum”, generally referred to simply as The Nation, from 1923 to 1930, and joint founder and editor of “The Political Quarterly” from 1931 to 1959. This book was a political commentary against fascism just prior to the outbreak of World War II. In the book, Woolf describes himself as “a Marxian Socialist but only up to a point”. (This book is not to be confused with a work of the same title written decades later by Bryan Burrough and John Helyar about the demise of RJR Nabisco) This book is the true first trade edition that is extremely scarce. Much more common is the “Left Book Club” edition that was printed later in the same year in softcover. This book, 221 pages, is a small format item with the pages measuring 183mm X 120mm. The book is in near fine condition, without a hint of fading on the covers and is nice and square. A very solid book. The dust jacket, protected in a mylar wrap, is in very good condition. The spine is a bit darkened and there is light chipping at the top and bottom of the spine and some light smudges on the back. This is a very nice copy of a true rarity by a prominent member of the Bloomsbury Group. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        The Wild Palms [Review Copy]

NY: Random House. 1939. A review copy of Faulkner's elaborately structured novel, which consists of two distinct stories presented in alternating chapters. The rare review slip, in addition to title, author, price, and publication date, carries a 100+ word synopsis of the novel's themes, in language that differs from that of the jacket copy, and concludes that The Wild Palms is "the most absorbing tale that the author has ever told." The binding is the first state, with the front and spine stamped in gold and green. But for tape shadows to the edges of the boards, a near fine copy in a good dust jacket with the edge tape-strengthened on the verso but still vulnerable with wear and tears at the folds. Very uncommon as a review copy, and a rare glimpse of the marketing of the novel in its own day. First Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine.

        Happy Valley : a novel

London : George C. Harrap, 1939. First edition. Octavo, original blue-lettered tan cloth in full dust jacket (slightly soiled, a few creases and small areas of loss to the corners), bookseller's label to front free endpaper, some slight offsetting to endpapers and adjoining leaves, light scattered foxing. Happy Valley, the first novel by arguably Australia's greatest author, was published in London in 1939 when White was just 26 years old. The 3000 copies printed sold out within a month, and the novel was widely praised by critics in New York, London and Australia. It won the Australian Literature Society's Gold Medal in 1941. White never allowed the story to be reprinted: according to his biographer David Marr his story's character was based on (and named after) an actual family White knew, and the author feared a libel suit if their descendants made the link (Sydney Morning Herald, 26 May 2012). The novel is one of the great stories of Australian identity, framed against the backdrop of small town intricacies, and already displays White's gift for creating complex characters. White was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1973 (Australia's only recipient). In the words of Thomas Keneally, he was 'one of those writers who won the Nobel prize for literature because he really deserved it' (The Guardian, 19 December 2012). On the centenary of White's birth, and over seventy years after the last edition issued in English, Happy Valley was republished under authority of the exectutor of White's estate, making it available once more to the reading public.         The Outsider

Sauk City, WI: Arkham House. Sauk City, WI, Arkham House, 1939. First Edition. First Impression. Hardback. A very good copy of the first book from Arkham House, a highlight of Arkham collecting and modern speculative fiction. An important book, and a catalyst for the subsequent decades of Lovecraft study and influence. Lovecraft was an influence on not just the genre of the weird and horror, but further afield to literature in general from Borges to Philip K. Dick. His influence and influencers has been the subject of a book in itself. Without Arkham house, and particularly the present title, the landscape would've been much changed. One of only 1200 published copies. Gathers together many now well-known works including Dagon, At the Mountains of Madness, The Call of Cthulhu , The Shadow over Innsmouth, Polaris and The Haunter of the Dark. A key work. The book itself is in very good condition. The jacket has chipping and wear to the fore corners, and one triangular puncture near the head of the spine, mostly closed. One short tear nearby. Some wear to the lower spine tip. The book is in very nice shape, nothing to comment on regarding condition other than the ownership signature of Paul Spencer to the front paste-down. Spencer was a writer and editor himself and collaborated with David Keller. Spencer went on to edit the James Branch Cabell journal Kalki. A very presentable copy of a landmark work. Offered in after-market slipcase. Cover art by Virgil Finlay [6505, Hyraxia Books]. . Very Good. Hardback. 1st Edition. 1939.

Gladiators; Darkness At Noon and Arrival and Departure.

New York: The Macmillan Company, 1939-1943. First American editions of each work in Koestler's acclaimed trilogy, including his masterpiece, Darkness at Noon. Octavo, original cloth. Darkness at Noon is signed by Arthur Koestler on the front free endpaper. Each volume is very good in a very good dust jackets with some rubbing and wear. First printings are rare signed. Although there is no narrative connection between the books, Arthur Koestler declared his first three novels to be a thematic trilogy following the publication of the final installment, Arrival and Departure. Set in different eras, each novel explores the ethics and consequences of revolutionary politics and idealism, reflecting Koestler's growing disillusionment with the political environment of mid-20th century Europe. Published in 1939, Koestler's first novel, The Gladiators, used the portrayal of the slave uprising led by Thracian gladiator Spartacus in ancient Rome to examine the rise of communism in the Soviet Union. This book was followed by Koestler's masterpiece, Darkness at Noon, the tale of an Old Bolshevik who is imprisoned and tried for treason by the very government he helped to create. Despite being based on real events, the novel does not directly refer to the Soviet government, Stalin, or Nazi Germany but uses generic descriptors such as "the Party", "Number One", and "the Dictatorship" respectively. The final book in the trilogy, Arrival and Departure, reflects Koestler's own plight as a Hungarian refugee in the midst of the Second World War. Koestler's contemporary, George Orwell, commended the book "for what must be one of the most shocking descriptions of Nazi terrorism that have ever been written."

Systems of Logic based on Ordinals. [Received 31 May, 1938. - Read 16 June, 1938.]. [In: Proceedings of the London Mathematical Society. Second Series. Volume 45].

London, Hodgson & Son, 1939. Royal8vo. In a recent nice red full cloth binding with gilt lettering to spine. Entire volumes 45 of "Proceedings of the London Mathematical Society. Second Series". Small white square paper label pasted on to lower part of spine, covering year of publication stating: "A Gift / From /Anna Wheeler". A very nice and clean copy without any institutional stamps. Pp. 161-240. [Entire volume: (4), 475 pp.]. ¶ The very rare first printing of Turing's Ph.D.-thesis, which "opened new fields of investigation in mathematical logic". This seminal work constitutes the first systematic attempt to deal with the Gödelian incompleteness theorem as well as the introduction to the notion of relative computing. After having studied at King's College at Cambridge from 1931 to 1934 and having been elected a fellow here in 1935, Turing, in 1936 wrote a work that was to change the future of mathematics, namely his seminal "On Computable Numbers", in which he answered the famous "Entscheidungsproblem", came up with his "Universal Machine" and inaugurated mechanical and electronic methods in computing. This most famous theoretical paper in the history of computing caught the attention of Church, who was teaching at Princeton, and in fact he gave to the famous "Turing Machine" its name. It was during Church's work with Turing's paper that the "Church-Turing Thesis" was born. After this breakthrough work, Newman, under whom Turing had studied at Cambridge, urged him to spend a year studying with Church, and in September 1936 he went to Princeton. It is here at Princeton, under the guidance of Church, that Turing in 1938 finishes his thesis [the present paper] and later the same year is granted the Ph.D. on the basis of it. The thesis was published in "Proceedings of the London Mathematical Society" in 1939, and after the publication of it, Turing did no more on the topic, leaving the actual breakthroughs to other generations. In his extraordinary Ph.D.-thesis Turing provides an ingenious method of proof, in which a union of systems prove their own consistency, disproving, albeit shifting the problem to even more complicated matters, Gödel's incompleteness theorem. It would be many years before the ingenious arguments and striking partial completeness result that Turing obtained in the present paper would be thoroughly investigated and his line of research continued. The present thesis also presents other highly important proofs and hypotheses that came to influence several branches of mathematics. Most noteworthy of these is the idea that was later to change the face of the general theory of computation, namely the attempt to produce an arithmetical problem that is not number-theoretical (in his sense). Turing's result is his seminal "o-machines"; he here introduces the notion of relative computing and augments the "Turing Machines" with so-called oracles ("o"), which allowed for the study of problems that could not be solved by the Turing machine. Turing, however, made no further use of his seminal o-machine, but it is that which Emil Post used as the basis for his theory of "Degrees of Unsolvability", crediting Turing with the result that for any set of natural numbers there is another of higher degree of unsolvability. This transformed the notion of computability from an absolute notion into a relative one, which led to entirely new developments and in turn to vastly generalized forms of recursion theory. "In 1939 Turing published "Systems of Logic Based on Ordinals,"... This paper had a far-reaching influence; in 1942 E.L. Post drew upon it for one of his theories for classifying unsolvable problems, while in 1958 G. Kreisel suggested the use of ordinal logics in characterizing informal methods of proof. In the latter year S. Feferman also adapted Turing's ideas to use ordinal logics in predicative mathematics." (D.S.B. XIII:498). A part from these groundbreaking points, which Turing never returned to himself, he here also considers intuition versus technical ingenuity in mathematical reasoning, does so in an interesting and provocative manner and comes to present himself as one of the most important thinkers of modern mathematical as well as philosophical logic."Turing turned to the exploration of the uncomputable for his Princeton Ph.D. thesis (1938), which then appeared as "Systems of Logic based on Ordinals" (Turing 1939). It is generally the view, as expressed by Feferman (1988), that this work was a diversion from the main thrust of his work. But from another angle, as expressed in (Hodges 1997), one can see Turing's development as turning naturally from considering the mind when following a rule, to the action of the mind when not following a rule. In particular this 1938 work considered the mind when seeing the truth of one of Gödel's true but formally unprovable propositions, and hence going beyond rules based on the axioms of the system. As Turing expressed it (Turing 1939, p. 198), there are 'formulae, seen intuitively to be correct, but which the Gödel theorem shows are unprovable in the original system.' Turing's theory of 'ordinal logics' was an attempt to 'avoid as far as possible the effects of Gödel's theorem' by studying the effect of adding Gödel sentences as new axioms to create stronger and stronger logics. It did not reach a definitive conclusion. In his investigation, Turing introduced the idea of an 'oracle' capable of performing, as if by magic, an uncomputable operation. Turing's oracle cannot be considered as some 'black box' component of a new class of machines, to be put on a par with the primitive operations of reading single symbols, as has been suggested by (Copeland 1998). An oracle is infinitely more powerful than anything a modern computer can do, and nothing like an elementary component of a computer. Turing defined 'oracle-machines' as Turing machines with an additional configuration in which they 'call the oracle' so as to take an uncomputable step. But these oracle-machines are not purely mechanical. They are only partially mechanical, like Turing's choice-machines. Indeed the whole point of the oracle-machine is to explore the realm of what cannot be done by purely mechanical processes...Turing's oracle can be seen simply as a mathematical tool, useful for exploring the mathematics of the uncomputable. The idea of an oracle allows the formulation of questions of relative rather than absolute computability. Thus Turing opened new fields of investigation in mathematical logic. However, there is also a possible interpretation in terms of human cognitive capacity." (SEP).

        The Outsider

Arkham House, Sauk City, WI 1939 - Sauk City, WI, Arkham House, 1939. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

On continued gravitational contraction” AND WITH “The mechanism of nuclear fission”, in PHYSICAL REVIEW, 1939

American Physical Society 1939 - TWO GREAT PAPERS in One Issue of the Physical Review: Oppenheimer/Snyder and Bohr/Wheeler Robert Oppenheimer and Hartland Snyder, “On continued gravitational contraction”, AND BOUND WITH Niels Bohr and J.A. Wheeler, “The mechanism of nuclear fission” both appearing in the Physical Review, September 1, 1939, Vol. 56, #5, pp. 426-50 and pp. 455-59, respectively. First editions of these two papers, presented in the original wrappered issue of the great Physical Review. Condition: the issue is not without its problems, and these are limited mostly to the spine cover, which is mostly worn away, though the spine itself is fine. THe only legible part of the lettering on the spine is the date on the spine bottom. Also there is some rust staining from the internal staples. Other than that the issue is really quite nice. All that said, I'm offering this at a fraction of what prettier copies are being sold for presently.__+__ The two papers appear together in a single issue of the journal, a remarkable set of achievements found in one small space--remarkable even more for the fact that 1939 (as with 1859, 1543, 1932, and 1948) is one of those remarkable single years in the history of science.__+__ The Oppenheimer and Snyder (a graduate assistant) paper is one of the most prescient in the history of modern physics, correctly physically describing (where Chandrasekhar and Eddington in their discussions did not) what happens in a particular collapse of a neutron star, and still today reads as fresh and and brightly as it did in 1939. Really, it is an extraordinary work, and a foundation paper in the history of gravitation, the application of RT, singularity, and astrophysics. (The Southampton GR Explorer site nicely states it this way: "This paper has strong claims to being one of the most prophetic ever written in this field of research. Today, 60 years later, this paper needs little revision - even the terminology is undated!")__+__ In an often-repeated quotation, they write, somewhat in irony and in a certain and understated manner on page 456: "The star thus tends to close itself off from any communication with a distant observer; only its gravitational field persists". And later: "When all thermonuclear sources of energy are exhausted, a sufficiently heavy star will collapse. Unless fission due to rotation, the radiation of mass, or the blowing off of mass by radiation, reduce the star's mass to the order of that of the sun, this contraction will continue indefinitely", they wrote.__+__ Next comes Bohr and Wheeler, “The mechanism of nuclear fission” is the experimental foundation stone (on the basis of the liquid drop model of atomic nuclei) of nuclear fission and the great leap forward in the construction of the atomic bomb. Condition: the paper of the spine of the publication is about one-third worn away, otherwise this is a very nice copy. __+__ From the abstract: "On the basis of the liquid drop model of atomic nuclei, an account is given of the mechanism of nuclear fission. In particular, conclusions are drawn regarding the variation from nucleus to nucleus of the critical energy required for fission, and regarding the dependence of fission cross section for a given nucleus on energy of the exciting agency. A detailed discussion of the observations is presented on the basis of the theoretical considerations. Theory and experiment fit together in a reasonable way to give a satisfactory picture of nuclear fission". [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
