Book design by Ladislav Sutnar. 80 lush gravure plates of battle and countryside.         Set of three catalogues for the Lincoln Zephyr V12.

(Paris Draeger c. 1938) - A set of three tri-fold full-color catalogues in French advertising the 1939 Lincoln Zephyr V12. Each is lavishly illustrated in Art Deco style, with extensive use of metallic inks. The front covers of each depict the ornamented grills of the luxury cars, with the slogan "pour l'élite," while the rear covers showcase Lincoln's flathead V12 engines and provides specifications. One catalogue has three full-color posters laid in, portraying the vehicle's elegant and streamlined aesthetics as a "masterpiece of the present times." The Zephyr was, in fact, the first successful streamlined car to come to market. Another poster compares the four-door sedan to the Winged Victory of Samothrace, and another to the ornate naval ships sailed under the Sun King, Louis XIV. On the reverse of each poster, in black & white, are additional images of the car's interior and exterior. In France, the automobiles were sold by Matford, a partnership between automakers Mathis and Ford. A fine set of deluxe automobilia, produced by the noted Parisian printer, Draeger.

        Death in the Making

New York: Covici Friede, (1938). New York: Covici Friede, (1938). A fine copy with both panels of the rare dust jacket laid in (the front panel complete, with chips and tears; the rear mostly complete, also chipped and torn; flaps detached, but included). A rare book with any semblance of the jacket.. First Edition. Quarto. Robert Capa's first book. Images of the Spanish Civil War, arranged by André Kertsz: a landmark of 20th century war photography. With the famous dust jacket image of a man being shot on the battlefield, often hailed as the greatest war photograph of all time. Rumors that this image was somehow staged are false. Gerda Taro, Capa's companion and co-photographer of this book, was killed in action at the battle of Brunete at age 27; the book is dedicated to her. Capa himself was killed stepping on a land mine in Vietnam in 1956. (Parr / Badger, v1, 139; Auer 266).

Sander (1895-1978), gehörte neben Erich Ollenhauer und Fritz Heine zu den zeitgenössischen prominenten SPD-Exilanten.         Marvels of the Insect World

New York: D. Appleton-Century Company, 1938. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good/very good. A Very Good copy of the first edition, first printing (spine ends pushed, tiny tear to spine head, light wear to spine ends and board bottoms), in a Very Good dust toned jacket (slight tearing to the spine head, mild rubbing to the spine panel edges, a short closed tear to the upper edge of the front panel and of the rear panel); a gathering of insect writings by the noted French entomologist who Darwin described as "an inimitable observer" and who, according to the Publisher, Maeterlinck described as "the insect's Homer" (the latter quote also has been attributed to Victor Hugo). A man who was found out by the World to be a great scientist only when he reached his old age, Fabre said of himself and his work: "Because I have stirred a few grains of sand on the shore, am I in a position to know the depths of the ocean? Life has unfathomable secrets. Human knowledge will be erased from the archives of the world before we possess the last word that the gnat has to say to us." Laboring in near obscurity and giving his work away rather than selling it, Fabre fell into deep poverty and remained there until Nobel Prize-winning author Frederic Mistral found him living in destitution and publicized his plight in Le Matin, upon which the French Government gave him a literary pension. It was this incident that brought the man and the greatness of his scientific work to the attention of the French people and then to the world. This wonderful, engaging, and highly readable (by scientist and layman alike) gathering of Fabre's work is quite scarce to the market. A Very Good copy.

        While England Slept

New York: G.P. Putnam’s Sons, 1938. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. Very good minus/Good plus. This book is the precursor to Churchill's famed war speeches. This is the first U.S. edition, first printing in dust jacket. The British first edition was given the politically palatable title "Arms and the Covenant". The U.S. title is a bit more honest. The book contains a collection of speeches spanning the years 1932 to 1938 criticizing British foreign policy and warning prophetically of the coming danger. The world remembers the resolute war leader to whom the British entrusted their fate, but it is easy to forget the years leading up to the war which Churchill spent persistent, eloquent, and largely unheeded. Churchill bibliographer Frederick Woods called this edition "probably the most crucial volume of speeches that he ever published". As testimony to the book's importance, a copy of While England Slept lay on "President Roosevelt's bedside table, with key passages, including an analysis of the president's peace initiative, underscored." (William Manchester's The Last Lion, Volume II, p.305) Offered here is a very good minus copy in a good plus first printing dust jacket. The blue cloth binding is square and tight with bright red banners and silver lettering, showing minor wear to the spine ends and corners. The contents show no spotting or previous owner inscriptions or book plates. The contents do show age-toning, as well as two vertical ashesive scars to the final free endpaper verso. The bottom edge and untrimmed fore edge are clean. The red-stained top edge retains decent color, but shows some uneven fading and a faint, red ink stamp that we cannot quite read. The dust jacket, notable for fading, retains bright color. Though clean and substantially complete, it shows wear, particularly at the flap folds and hinges, with shallow chipping to the spine ends, as well as a horizontal crease at the lower half of the spine. The dust jacket is unclipped, though the original $4.00 price has been scratched out, leaving only the "$" symbol legible. The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover.         Murphy

London: George Routledge & Sons, 1938. London: George Routledge & Sons,, 1938. Octavo. Original green cloth, titles to spine in gilt. Spine cocked, small faint white smudge to bottom edge of front board, boards lightly rubbed, endleaves mildly foxed. A very good copy. First edition, first impression, first issue binding. Kate O'Brien's personal copy with her signature and inscriptions on the front free endpaper and the title and facing page, including the 11-line note: "I reviewed this novel for 'The Spectator' when it appeared in August 1938. Almost the only review of "Murphy" to appear in England that summer. I was told long after that my review gave Samuel Beckett much pleasure. K. O'B. May 1970". This copy is one of no more than 718 copies from the first batch of bindings produced by Webb Son and Co, which are of smooth green cloth. The two subsequent batches, in November 1941 and April 1942, were of coarser material, most probably due to wartime shortages.

        Little Essays Toward Truth

London: Privately Issued By the O.T.O., 1938. London: Privately Issued By the O.T.O., 1938. Although there are no ownership marks, this is Meeka Aldritch's copy (Soror IVA/17, Agape Lodge), with her light marginalia.  Blue cloth, gold stamped binding differs from the British edition (different cloth, smaller title font, and smaller A.'.A.'. stamping to front board as called for). Lacking the DJ as per usual (As Issued?).  General overall wear. Spine shows slight fade w/ cloth rubbing. Head and tails show wear, with fraying to spine and joints extremities.  Front board gold font stamping without loss, some loss to bottom sigil. Edges show some light spotting.  Binding tight, with no issues.  Addendum follows after page 23. Order form for The Equinox of the Gods is present, and not detached. Lacking the fold out Tree of Life diagram to rear, with no evidence of being removed (As bound?). This edition (actually more rare than the British edition), is always encountered well worn due to the variant binding materials used. As with the first American edition of "Eight Lectures In Yoga", it is believed that the unbound sheets where sent over from England to save on costs, and rebound by Agape lodge members.. First American Edition. Cloth. Good/No Jacket, As Issued?. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall.
