The Diary of T.E. Lawrence, copy #175 of the extraordinary limited edition "The Diary kept by T.E. Lawrence while traveling in Arabia during 1911" and "the most ambitious and handsome volume published by the Corvinus Press”

London: Corvinus Press, 1937. Limited Edition. Hardcover. This is the extraordinarily beautiful 1937 Corvinus Press limited first edition of The Diary of T.E. Lawrence, which has been called “the most ambitious and handsome volume published by the Corvinus Press.” The edition was bound in quarter brown leather over beautifully speckled and textured boards that appear to be rice paper with parchment corners. Of the entire edition of 203 copies, 130 were printed thus on sumptuous, mould-made “parchment substitute paper” with gilt top edge and untrimmed fore and bottom edges, bound with 13 collotype plates of photographs “taken by the author during the time the diary was being written.” The limitation page is hand-numbered “175.” We conservatively grade this copy as near fine. The binding is square and tight with sharp corners, bright spine gilt, and no appreciable sunning or soiling. Searching for flaws, we note the most trivial hints of shelf wear to the bottom edge and the spine head corners. The contents are likewise exceptionally clean with no previous ownership marks and no spotting. The top edge gilt remains bright. We note only mild age-toning to the untrimmed fore and bottom edges. T.E. Lawrence (1888-1935) achieved fame from his remarkable odyssey as instigator, organizer, hero, and tragic figure of the Arab revolt against the Ottoman Empire during the First World War, which he began as an eccentric junior intelligence officer and ended as “Lawrence of Arabia.” However, Lawrence's literary and intellectual reach far exceeded the world and words of Seven Pillars of Wisdom.  To the point, Lawrence's friend and admirer Winston Churchill said:  “Lawrence had a full measure of the versatility of genius…  He was a savant as well as a soldier.  He was an archaeologist as well as a man of action.  He was an accomplished scholar as well as an Arab partisan.  He was a mechanic as well as a philosopher.  His background of somber experience and reflection only seemed to set forth more brightly the charm and gaiety of his companionship, and the generous majesty of his nature.”  (Great Contemporaries, p. 166) Lawrence's 1911 Diary is an early window on his observational astuteness and sensitivity, as well as the sheer physical endurance (he was “extremely ill the greater part of the time”) that informed his intellect. After graduating from Oxford with a First in history, Lawrence was employed at an archaeological dig in Carchemish in Northern Syria. In 1911, while the dig was on a seasonal hiatus, Lawrence took a solitary walking journey through Syria, during which he kept a diary. This 1937 Corvinus Press limited edition not only published the Diary for the first time, but also a poem written in 1914 to Lawrence by his brother, W.G. Lawrence (who was killed in 1915 while flying during active service in France), as well as three letters written by Lawrence to his mother during his Syrian journey. The Corvinus Press was founded in 1936 by Viscount Carlow, an active book collector and amateur linguist and typographer. The press published works by T.E. Lawrence, James Joyce, and other noteworthy literary figures. Carlow was killed in a 1944 airplane crash and the press was bought out the following year. Bibliographic reference: O'Brien A194

Sussex Edition of the Complete Works in Prose and Verse of Rudyard Kipling, The

London: Macmillan and Company, 1937. The Best and Rarest Edition of the Works of Rudyard Kipling One of the Signed Sets that Escaped the Blitz of London KIPLING, Rudyard. The Sussex Edition of the Complete Works in Prose and Verse of Rudyard Kipling. London: Published by Macmillan and Company, 1937-1939. One of 500 sets signed by Rudyard Kipling (this being No. 219) and printed on hand-made paper. Complete in thirty-five royal octavo volumes (9 1/2 x 6 5/8 inches; 241 x 163 mm.). Half-titles printed in rust. The first sheet of each signature bears Kipling's familiar Ganesha watermark. Publisher's full niger morocco, covers double-ruled in gilt, spine lettered in gilt in compartments, five raised bands, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt on the rough, all others uncut. Minimal and uniform fading to spines, otherwise a very fine set. "During the last years of his life, Kipling was engaged in a complete revision of his works, and the text of the Sussex edition represents his final revised text. Two volumes of uncollected prose and much verse are here collected for the first time. This de luxe, signed edition was published after the author's death by Macmillan & Co. and is limited to 525 sets of which 500 are for sale. Unfortunately, a substantial portion of the edition was destroyed in unbound sheets during the bombing of London in 1941." (Stewart. Rudyard Kipling a Bibliographical Catalogue, Toronto, 1959, p. 577.) The Sussex Edition was envisioned by his long-time publisher Macmillan as a monument to Kipling. Joseph Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) was an English short-story writer, poet, and novelist. He wrote tales and poems of British soldiers in India and stories for children. He was born in Bombay, in the Bombay Presidency of British India, and was taken by his family to England when he was five years old. Kipling's works of fiction include The Jungle Book (1894), Kim (1901), and many short stories, including "The Man Who Would Be King" (1888). His poems include "Mandalay" (1890), "Gunga Din" (1890), "The Gods of the Copybook Headings" (1919), "The White Man's Burden" (1899), and "If-" (1910). He is regarded as a major innovator in the art of the short story; his children's books are classics of children's literature; and one critic described his work as exhibiting "a versatile and luminous narrative gift". Rudyard Kipling was one of the most popular writers in England, in both prose and verse, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Henry James said: "Kipling strikes me personally as the most complete man of genius (as distinct from fine intelligence) that I have ever known." In 1907, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, making him the first English-language writer to receive the prize, and its youngest recipient to date. Among other honors, he was sounded out for the British Poet Laureateship and on several occasions for a knighthood, all of which he declined. Kipling's subsequent reputation has changed according to the political and social climate of the age and the resulting contrasting views about him continued for much of the 20th century. George Orwell called him a "prophet of British imperialism".Literary critic Douglas Kerr wrote: "He [Kipling] is still an author who can inspire passionate disagreement and his place in literary and cultural history is far from settled. But as the age of the European empires recedes, he is recognized as an incomparable, if controversial, interpreter of how empire was experienced. That, and an increasing recognition of his extraordinary narrative gifts, make him a force to be reckoned with." Stewart, p. 577.

Original Portrait Photograph - signed in green ink by Philip Glass.

Original Black-and-White Photograph on archival paper. Excellent condition, mounted. Signed photographs by Glass are extremely rare ! Philip Morris Glass (born January 31, 1937) is an American composer. He is considered one of the most influential music makers of the late 20th century. His music is also often controversially described as minimal music, along with the work of the other "major minimalists" La Monte Young, Terry Riley and Steve Reich. Glass has distanced himself from the "minimalist" label, describing himself instead as a composer of "music with repetitive structures". Though his early mature music shares much with what is normally called "minimalist", he has since evolved stylistically. Currently, he describes himself as a "classicist", pointing out that he is trained in harmony and counterpoint and studied such composers as Franz Schubert, Johann Sebastian Bach and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart with Nadia Boulanger. Glass has founded his namesake musical group, Philip Glass Ensemble, with which he still performs on keyboards, as well as operas, musical theatre works, ten symphonies, eleven concertos, solo works, chamber music including string quartets and instrumental sonatas, and film scores. Three of his film scores have been nominated for Academy Awards. (Wikipedia)

Diagnoses algarum novarum. Post sylloges editionem descriptarum. I (centuriae I-XI) (AND) II (centuria I). (all published).

Brixia [Brescia], privately published by the author, 1937-1955. 12 parts in 12 (17.7 x 13.6 cm). 1200 pages. (Near) contemporary uniform brown cloth with gilt title on the spines.l Very rare and complete as it was privately printed "sumptibus auctoris" and divided in twelve "centuria". Published over a long period, it contains 1200 descriptions of different algae. The last published part is I(11), not II(1). It was probably published posthumously as there is a small cross printed in front of the author's printed name, Joseph [= Giuseppe] de Toni. The work was printed on peculiar thick paper. It might be regarded as a continuation of his Sylloge Algorum, published from 1889 to 1924 in six volumes. The latter is very rare too. Library stamps on the front pastedowns, otherwise a good, clean set. Stafleu and Cowan, Supplement V, 30.017.

        THE METAMORPHOSIS OF NARCISSUS

Paris: Editions Surréalistes, 1937. Signed and dated by the artist 'Salvador Dali 1958'. Dali completed his now famous oil painting 'The Metamorphosis of Narcissus' in 1937 after a long period working and touring in the United States. This is the poem that Dali composed while working on this iconic image, here published in a limited edition of 550 copies. The paper wrappers feature a photographic portrait by Cecil Beaton that further plays upon the theme self-reflection. The classical myth of Narcissus, wherein a thespian youth is unable to escape the beauty of his own reflection, held enduring appeal for Dali. For the surrealists, the myth was not merely a cautionary tale of vanity run riot but expressed a deeper metaphysical conundrum concerning the core of human consciousness. The paradox of the myth is that Narcissus was an innocent, unaware that he was staring at his own reflection. As a trope for consciousness creating itself from itself, the myth became a source of endless fascination for Dali, and this cyclical creative process forms the subject of his poem. Limited edition of 550 copies. Slim quarto, with one tipped colour plate and two in black & white; a little flaking of the spine, overall good condition.

Ensembles Mobiliers Vol.1. Exposition Internationale de 1937

Paris: Charles Moreau, 1937. A magnificent portfolio of Art Deco interiors by French designers Jean Dunand, Jean Royere, Jacques Adnet, Le Bucheron, Rinck, Louis Sognot, Andre Arbus, E. R. Lamy and others. The gentle photography and superlative collotype plates eminently suit these stylish and understated interiors. The plates are of special interest for the study of period carpets, furniture, upholstery, parquetry and other floorings: two plates illustrate remarkable large-scale lacquer murals in their settings. Ultimately the value of the portfolio is the arrangement of all components within highly premeditated interiors, capturing the atmosphere of these beautiful spaces exactly as they were intended. Folio (450x320mm), original printed portfolio with ties, 6 pages (title-page, introduction and list of designers) + 32 collotype plates, loose as issued. The portfolio is scuffed yet sound and the plates remain fine.
