        The Works

London: Macmillan and Company,, 1937. 35 volumes, large octavo. Original full tan niger, titles to spines gilt, raised bands, double line rule to boards gilt, top edges rough gilt, other edges uncut as issued. A fine set with just a modicum of the usual entirely organic variation in colour. The Sussex Edition, the definitive edition limited to 525 numbered sets, signed by the author. During the last years of his life, Kipling was engaged in a complete revision of his works, with a view to having it published in Britain (as here) and in America (the Burwash edition). In both cases, he signed sheets for the editions before his death and the editions appeared posthumously. Although 525 sets of sheets for the Sussex edition were prepared, far fewer were bound and many were lost to enemy action as they lay in the publisher's warehouse.

BLIGH’S VOYAGE IN THE RESOURCE From Coupang to Batavia, Together with the Log of His Subsequent Passage to England in the Dutch Packet Vlydt and His Remarks on Morrison’s Journal. All Printed for the First Time From the Manuscripts in the Mitchell Library of New South Wales, With an Introduction and Notes by Owen Rutter

London: The Golden Cockerel Press, 1937. First edition, LIMITED to 350 copies numbered by hand, printed by Christopher and Anthony Sanford and Owen Rutter in Caslon Old Face type on Van Gelder paper. With very dramatic woodblock engravings by Peter Barker-Mill. Also with facsimiles of Bligh’s own map and pages from the log. Folio, publisher’s original blue cloth featuring a geometric inlay of yellow cloth on both the upper and lower boards, lettered in gilt on the spine. 160, [i]. A fine and bright copy, very clean and fresh. A FINE LIMITED EDITION FROM THE GOLDEN COCKEREL PRESS, and the first appearance in print of Captain Bligh’s Voyage in the Resource, a “sequel” to his LOG OF THE H.M.S. BOUNTY. The work was printed from manuscripts found at the Mitchell Library in Sydney. Neither the log of this voyage, nor the record of his passage back to England, appears to have been among the papers handed over to the Admiralty and the editor’s search for them in public records was in vain. But the manuscript copies at the Mitchell Library had been certified by Bligh himself. The Bounty Mutiny remains one of the most remarkable incidents in the whole of maritime history. On their way to introduce the breadfruit as a cash crop to the West Indies from the South Sea Islands, "Breadfruit Bligh" and eighteen of his crew were set adrift by Fletcher Christian, the master's mate of the Bounty, and made a journey of about 4000 miles in an open boat before landing on the East Indian Island of Timor. Several of the mutineers who had settled on Pitcairn Island were eventually captured and three were executed in England. Interestingly enough, Bligh was subjected to two further mutinies in his career, though only the last, in New South Wales, can be blamed upon the harsh exercise of authority.

        Great Contemporaries

This is Churchill's much praised collection of insightful essays about 21 leading personalities of the day - including the likes of Lawrence, Shaw, and, most famously, Hitler. Churchill's piece about Hitler can be a shock to the modern ear, underscoring both Churchill's ability to make a balanced appraisal of his subject and his earnest desire to avoid the war that Churchill would fight with such ferocious resolve only a few years after this book was published. (Attention-seeking revisionists who cast Churchill as intent on causing the Second World War should read this, among other things.) About Hitler, Churchill wrote: "We cannot tell whether Hitler will be the man who will once again let loose upon the world another war in which civilization will irretrievably succumb, or whether he will go down in history as the man who restored honour and peace of mind to the great Germanic nation and brought it back serene, helpful and strong, to the forefront of the European family circle." There is a reason this book is still in print today. It was written with what has been called "penetrating evaluation, humor, and understanding." Churchill's balanced and nuanced perspectives are a good model for many of today's more polemic writers. And naturally, in the course of sketching the character of his contemporaries Churchill also reveals key glimpses into his own character and perspective. This is as fascinating a read today as it was in 1937. Here is a collector grade copy - fine in a near-fine, unclipped first printing dust jacket. Collectors should note that the first printing dust jacket is unique, with changes to the front flap on the second and subsequent printings. The blue cloth binding of this example is immaculate - tight and square with vivid blue color, bright gilt, square corners, nicely rounded spine, and virtually no wear. The contents are clean and tight with no spotting and no incriptions. The book has clean text block edges, and the blue-stained top edge retains strong, unfaded color. The striking orange dust jacket is bright, unclipped, and highly complete. Trivial losses are confined to the spine ends and corners. The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover. Bibliographic Reference: Cohen A105.1.a, Woods/ICS A43(a.1), Langworth p.178.

        TYPED LETTER SIGNED (TLS)

Atlanta, GA, 7 December 1937. Letter. Normal creases from mailing, otherwise Fine. Fine 3-1/4-page letter of @750 words on Mitchell's stationery with several manuscript corrections and seven words added in her hand. To Herschel Brickell, a noted book reviewer from Mississippi who served on the New York Herald Tribune book section and who was a reviewer for the New York Evening Post at the time of this correspondence. Mitchell discusses travel plans, visits, and preparations for the movie production of GONE WITH THE WIND: "Several days after I wrote you a story appeared in a New York paper that the actress, Gladys Hansen, Atlanta-born, now a dramatic coach, had been engaged by Selznick to coach Southern accents." Mitchell comments on the choice of Lenore Ulric to play Belle: "I wondered sadly where the blowzy, common, good-hearted Belle had gone." Mitchell writes a paragraph about her hat, "the giddy and idiotic headgear I am nervously trying to balance on my head," before commenting on her book and its effect on her life: "GWTW is quieting in New York, if I may judge from the best seller list where I am now in twelfth place.... I'm tired of avoiding autograph hunters, people who want me to make speeches, candid cameramen and reporters who want to know very peculiar things which really are none of their business." Much more. SIGNED "M" by Mitchell. All the letters to Brickell we have seen were signed by Mitchell as "Margaret" or "M," an indication of the close relationship she had with him. Not in Harwell's MARGARET MITCHELL'S "GONE WITH THE WIND" LETTERS, though many others to Brickell are.

Jacket is complete, but with wear along the flap folds, creasing at the corners, some archival tape repairs at the verso, and some fading to the spine. Basis for the 1947 film noir, "The Gangster," written for the screen by Fuchs and Dalton Trumbo, and starring Barry Morgan, Akim Tamiroff, Harry Morgan, and a brief appearance by a young Shelley Winters. One of the rarest film noir sources, and the only jacketed copy we have ever handled.
