The Revolution Betrayed: What Is The Soviet Union and Where Is It Going? Presentation copy to Benjamin Stolberg. [together with]: Stolberg's personal copies of "Not Guilty" and "The Case of Leon Trotsky" and an original 3" x 5" photograph of Trotsky and Stolberg, dated April, 1937

Doubleday, Doran, New York 1937 - A major presentation copy of the work which effectively served as Trotsky's death sentence, a detailed and strident dismantling of Stalinist bureaucracy in the Soviet Union, which Trotsky described as ".a revival of genuine Russian barbarism.[under] a bureaucracy possessing little culture, and [imposing on] the masses a well-known gospel of obedience and silence." Trotsky's manuscript for The Revolution Betrayed was completed in the spring of 1936, and was certainly known to leaders of the Comintern by the time of the first Moscow show trial in August of that year, at which Trotsky was sentenced to death in absentia for conspiracy to assassinate Stalin. The death sentence was finally carried out in 1940, when a Comintern assassin attacked Trotsky in his home at Coyoacán, Mexico, killing him with a single blow to the head with an ice-axe. Benjamin Stolberg (1891-1951) was a prominent and highly respected American labor journalist throughout the Thirties and Forties; his columns were syndicated by the Scripps-Howard newspaper syndicate as well as the New York Post, The New York Times, and various labor newspapers. As a member of the Dewey Commission -- an independent tribunal of left-leaning intellectuals assembled to investigate the Comintern's accusations against Trotsky and his faction -- Stolberg had a singular, and significant, connection to Trotsky. The Dewey Commission published two thick volumes concerning the Moscow Trials, the first a transcript of the Commission's 13-session deposition of Trotsky at his home in Coyoacán, Mexico in 1937 (titled "The Case of Leon Trotsky"), during the course of which this volume was almost certainly inscribed; the second a summary of the Commission's conclusions, which are neatly summarized in the book's title: "Not Guilty" (1938). Stolberg's personal copies of each of these volumes, with his dated ownership signature to each front endpaper, are included here, as is a small (3-1/2" x 4-1/2") vintage black and white print of Trotsky in the company of two unidentified visitors (probably Commission members), identified on verso in Stolberg's hand: Coyoacan / April 1937. Autographed copies of The Revolution Betrayed are not, strictly speaking, uncommon -- Trotsky hosted many visitors during his four-year exile in Coyoacán, and was not hesitant to sign copies of his books -- but to our knowledge this is the first significant association copy to appear on the market in at least 20 years, and the only copy to have provenance relating it to a member of the Dewey Commission. PROVENANCE: Through the trade, from a Stolberg descendant. Octavo. Cloth boards, stamped in red, white and gilt on spine; dustjacket; [i]-vii, 308pp. Presentation copy, inscribed by Trotsky to Benjamin Stolberg on front endpaper: "To Benjamin Stolberg / devotedly yours / Leon Trotsky / 21 - 11 - 1937." A tight, straight copy, Very Good to Near Fine; in the original pictorial dustwrapper, unclipped, faded on spine and with a few chips at extremities; VG. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

        SERVE IT FORTH

1937. Book. 1st. 8 tipped-in plates reproducing gastronomically-themed woodcuts, paintings, engravings, and lithographs from the Bettman Collection. New York and London: Harper & Brothers Publishers, 1937. First edition. 8½" x 6"; xii, [2], 253 pp. Fisher’s first book, interspersing her own recollections of memorable dining experiences with historical observations on cuisine, what she would refer to as "humanistic-gastronomic writing". Among the most notable essays is an account of the last truffle hunting virgin in France and Fisher’s heartbreaking description of her last meal with a favorite waiter. Although the book did not sell especially well, most critics comprehended that Fisher’s work was a new and singular contribution to American food writing. The New York Times opined, "The truth is that it is stamped on every page with a highly individualized personality." And the Chicago Tribune characterized it as "such a delicate emulsion that is difficult to tell whether it is the historical and literary references or the author’s observations that are the book’s basic flavor." Publisher’s orange cloth with black and gold titles and gilt-stamped spine decorations. Cloth fading along the spine and extremities. Jacket brittle and a bit shelf worn, with some chipping to the spine ends and front folds; otherwise a very good copy..

BLACK LEGION (156pp Original Mimeographed REVISED FINAL DRAFT SCREENPLAY from the 1937 Humphrey Bogart Crime-Noir)

Burbank: Warner Brothers, 1937. (Bogart, Humphrey) Original 156pp mimeographed FINAL DRAFT SCREENPLAY (complete with blue revision pages) for the 1937 Warner Brothers film BLACK LEGION starring HUMPHREY BOGART -- the story of an average guy who finds himself lured into joining a secret organization called the "Black Legion" modeled on the Ku Klux Klan with deadly consequences; it is based on the true story taken from the headlines of the day. THE BLACK LEGION served as a plum lead role for Humphrey Bogart during the era in which he was usually 2nd or 3rd billed and might have been a breakout role had Warner Brothers promoted the movie -- instead Bogart would have to wait four more years until THE MALTESE FALCON and HIGH SIERRA to achieve fame. The film was directed by Archie L. Mayo (with some assistance from Michael Curtiz...who later directed Bogart in CASABLANCA) and co-starred Ann Sheridan, Dick Foran, and Erin O'Brien-Moore. It was written by Abem Finkel and re-written by novelist William Wister Haynes. This original 1937 mimeographed script is housed in brad-bound pale blue original Warner Brothers covers which although labeled "Part 1" actually also contain within it parts 2 and 3 -- which were bound into the covers later as was often normal practice in that era of movie-making. Part 4 is a staple and paper-clipped 'added-last' separate section which follows on in the pagination perfectly but clearly no-one at the time bothered to remove the original brass brads and officially insert it...instead it was just stuck inside the back of the script -- which is how we found it. The screenplay is dated 8/1/36, with blue revision pages (dated 8/4/36) interspersed throughout. Contains studio perforated cover page used to keep track of the distributed scripts (receipt extracted here as is the norm). This final section is dated 8/25/36 and contains pages 141-156. The last two pages however are not stapled -- rather they are paper-clipped (old rust marks serve as evidence) and are ragged in appearance and the last page has unfortunately gone missing. Despite lacking the final page, it remains true that this is an exceedingly rare opportunity to own an original Bogart film script from the 1930s. After looking at auction records and library databases, there seems to be no other examples of this script to be found and this may be the only example to survive...not surprising as THE MALTESE FALCON (1941), a far-more-famous and high profile Warner Brothers script released at roughly the same time and looking extremely similar in appearance to this one, is known only by a few surviving copies. . Signed. Printed Wrappers. Very Good.

        Their Eyes Were Watching God

Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott, 1937. First edition. Octavo, original cloth. A lending library copy, with light stamps to the rear endpaper in the rare original dust jacket which has been adhered to the book and appears to have been trimmed at the bottom. Rare in the original dust jacket. For me, Their eyes were watching God is one of the very greatest American novels of the 20th century. It is so lyrical it should be sentimental; it is so passionate it should be overwrought, but it is instead a rigorous, convincing and dazzling piece of prose, as emotionally satisfying as it is impressive. There is no novel I love more" (Zadie Smith).

On the Mathematical Description of Light Nuclei by the Method of Resonating Group Structure" (Wheeler) WITH "Field Theory of Nuclear Interaction," (Kemmer) WITH "Visible Radiation Produced by Electrons Moving in a Medium with Velocities Exceeding that of Light" (Cherenkov) "Note on the Radiation Field of the Electron" (Bloch) WITH "The Low Frequency Radiation of a Scattered Election" (Nordsieck) in Physical Review 52, July to December 1937, pp. 54-59; pp. 59-62; pp. 378-379; pp. 906-910; pp. 1107-1122

FIRST EDITION VOLUME 52 OF THE PHYSICAL REVIEW HOUSING 5 IMPORTANT PHYSICS PAPERS. In "On the Mathematical Description of Light Nuclei by the Method of Resonating Group Structure" contains Wheeler's important introduction of the S-Matrix. In "Field Theory of Nuclear Interaction," Nicholas Kemmer proposes the first of two alternative currents required for electroweak synthesis. In "Visible Radiation Produced by Electrons," Pavel Cherenkov describes the theory of Cherenkov radiation, the effect wherein light emitted by a transparent medium when charged particles pass through it at a speed greater than the speed of light in the medium. "Cherenkov observed the emission of blue light from a bottle of water subjected to radioactive bombardment. This phenomenon, associated with charged atomic particles moving at velocities greater than the speed of light in the local medium, proved to be of great importance in subsequent experimental work in nuclear physics, and for the study of cosmic rays" (Wikipedia). In "Note on the Radiation Field of the Electron," Bloch and Nordsieck point out the limitations of QED at that time. Their work "shows how in field theory to avoid the infinity associated with the 'infra-red catastrophy' -- the emission of low frequency photons which tends to infinity in quantum theory (Hartman, A Memoir on the Physical Review," 168). Following this, Nordsieck then uses this new technique in calculating the radiative scattering of electrons in "The Low Frequency Radiation of a Scattered Electron." CONDITION & DETAILS: Lancaster: American Institute of Physics, July to December 1937. Quarto (10 x 8 inches; 250 x 203mm). Entire volume handsomely rebound in half black cloth over aged marbled paper boards. Gilt ruled and lettered at the spine. Ex-libris bearing only a small perforated stamp on the title page, a number on the publication page, and a stamp on the rear blank flyleaf; no other library markings whatsoever. Tightly and very solidly bound. Bright and very clean throughout. Near fine condition.

        FORBIDDEN ADVENTURE (ca. 1937)

Mapel Pictures / Roadshow Attractions 1937 - Vintage original 27 x 41" (68 x 105 cm.) one sheet poster, USA This is the USA release poster for the 1935 UK exploitation film ANGKOR. The film was a documentary in the "Mondo" style and initially consisted of a basic travelogue of footage shot in Cambodia supposedly during WWI telling the story of the sacred monkeys. The footage was actually stock footage, which the film makers spiced up by traveling to Los Angeles and hiring prostitutes from the well-known Selma Street brothel to cavort topless, the footage which was then inserted (they were menaced by a Gorilla in the "story.") Later USA reissues of this film used the titles FORBIDDEN ADVENTURE IN ANGKOR and THE GORILLA WOMAN. One of the finest posters in this tradition. On linen, VERY GOOD-FINE.
