Qué Haces tú para Evitar Esto? Ayuda a Madrid. [Cartel original de la Guerra Civil Española.]

Ministerio de Propaganda, s.l. (Madrid) 1937 - 39.5x27.5.

The Late George Apley: A Novel in the Form of a Memoir

Little, Brown & Co. 1937 - First printing (cr: P date). With "Lovely Pearl" at top of p. 17 although the significance of that alleged point of issue is unclear. Blue cloth, gilt titles to spine and front board. Red topstain. Book very good with faint vertical streaks to a number of pages evidently caused by a malfunction on press and common to this title. Topstain shows some evidence of waterspotting. Inscribed by Marquand and dated 01/37 on a tipped-in leaf that has come unbound from ffep. DJ essentially whole but with a brown paper backing applied to reverse; evidently for preservation as it also shows evidence of waterstaining, small holes/wear at spine, esp front spine fold. Also age-discolored with several small surface tears to front panel. Price of $2.50 however is intact. Rare, both in first and signed. 354 pp. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Addresses of the President of the United States on the Occasion of His Visit to South America, November & December 1936

[Washington, D.C.]: United States Printing Office, 1937. First edition, one of 75 (but probably one of only 7 in this binding). 97, [3] pp. 4to. Bound in full light bown pigskin, with metallic plaque of the Seal of the United States inset into the upper cover, now with a fine patina, pigskin doublures and silk endpapers. Fine. In quarter leather and marbled boards pull off slipcase. First edition, one of 75 (but probably one of only 7 in this binding). 97, [3] pp. 4to. A sumptously produced White House Christmas book, commemorating FDR's nearly month-long diplomatic mission to promote "hemispheric solidarity" with South America. The book was issued in an uncertain, though undoubtedly strictly limited, number, with two issues--in full pigskin, as seen here, and half pigskin and marbled boards. The colophon calls for 75 copies, with the more desirable full pigskin binding scheduled to run to 50 copies for distribution to South American dignitaries and the half-leather isssue of a planned 25 copies reserved for FDR's personal use and distribution at the holidays. Documents at the Library at Hyde Park suggest that the full edition of 75 copies was not achieved (cf. Horowitz, "Carmichael Collection") and that as few as seven were ever bound in full pigskin - See more at: http://www.jamescumminsbookseller.com/pages/books/238988/franklin-d-roosevelt/addresses-of-the-president-of-the-united-states-on-the-occasion-of-his-visit-to-south-america#sthash.vk0aHp3x.dpuf.

On computable numbers, with an application to the Entscheidungsproblem' [with:] 'On computable numbers, with an application to the Entscheidungsproblem. A correction.' [in:] Proceedings of the London Mathematical Society, series 2, vols 42-3

London, C.F. Hodgson and Son, [1936-] 1937 - Two vols, 8vo (253 x 165 mm), I pp 230-265 (the entire vol [iv] 559 [1, blank] with folding table); II pp 544-546 (the entire vol [iv] 546); fine, clean copies in contemporary or near-contemporary brown buckram, one corner slightly bumped, no institutional markings, slight discolouration to the loweer front cover of the second volume. £18,500First edition of the journal appearance (there was also a very rare offprint) of Turing's great paper, the conceptual foundation of modern computing. In this paper Turing proved that there were uncomputable numbers, in other words that there were existed mathematical problems that were unsolvable and therefore that mathematics was undecidable. In so doing he also established that the 'Turing machine' (a name coined by Church) would be able to compute all computable numbers. In 1928 David Hilbert had posed the Entscheidungsproblem, the outstanding problem of mathematical logic at the time. This asks whether there is an algorithm that can determine whether any given mathematical statement is true or not. 'Inspired by the human computer (i.e., the human engaged in computation), Turing described a notional machine that could read and write symbols along a segmented tape. The machine itself would be capable of assuming various internal states that, together with the input of a single symbol along the tape, could lead to a few primitive atomic actions. Based on the state and the current symbol, each configuration specifies a change (or not) of symbol, a move right or left, and a next state. Working under some straightforward assumptions about the finite and discrete nature of the machine, Turing was able to demonstrate the wide range of numbers (equivalently, the wide class of functions) that could be computed and, moreover, able to specify a single machine, the universal machine, that would be capable of simulating the computations of any such machine. Turing's characterization has come to be seen as a more compelling account of what it means to be effective, mechanical, or algorithmic than any of the various extensionally equivalent formulations offered by his contemporaries' (New Dictionary of Scientific Biography v 7 p 83).The Correction was published in order to remove some formal errors made in the first paper which had been spotted by the Swiss mathemtician Paul Bernays.Origins of Cyberspace 394; Tomash and Williams T61, T62

An important relic of the 1937 Hindenburg disaster, collected by the chief boatswain in charge of the mooring lines at Lakehurst?who was also a survivor of the Shenandoah

[Lakehurst, NJ], [May 6, 1937]. 27". "A 27"" length of rope, recovered from the wreck of the Zeppelin airship, Hindenburg, after it crashed in Lakehurst, New Jersey on May 6, 1937. Expected wear. One theory behind the start of the blaze that so rapidly engulfed the Hindenburg, was that when the mooring ropes made contact with the ground, they completed a circuit allowing a buildup of positively charged ions to make ground which initiated a spark. However, this, like many theories surrounding the airship disaster, remain inconclusive to this day.The rope was recovered by Frederick J. ""Bull"" Tobin (1892-1978), one of the chief boatswains managing the mooring lines at Lakehurst, New Jersey when the Hindenburg caught fire and crashed to the ground in flames. Tobin became famous for ordering the fleeing ground crew back to their posts in order to assist the survivors. Twelve years earlier , Tobin survive the crash of the airship U.S.S. Shenandoah in southeastern Ohio. He had been asleep near the tail of the airship at the time, and managed to escape just as the rear section crashed to Earth (John Toland, The Great Dirigibles: Their Triumphs and Disasters, 1957, p. 140-141, 328)."

[Lakehurst, NJ], [May 6, 1937]. 9" x 3" x 4". "A section of struts, constructed of aluminum alloy, 9"" x 3"" x 4"", recovered from the wreck of the Zeppelin airship Hindenburg after it crashed in Lakehurst, New Jersey on May 6, 1937.         Kyskhet. Ett spel för teatern i prolog och fem akter.

Stockholm; Bonniers, 1937. Originalupplaga. 19,5x13 cm. 194 s. Publisher?'s full niger morocco, covers double-ruled in gilt, spine lettered in gilt in compartments, five raised bands, gilt turn-ins, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt on the rough, all others uncut. Minimal and uniform fading to spines, otherwise a very fine set. ?"During the last years of his life, Kipling was engaged in a complete revision of his works, and the text of the Sussex edition represents his final revised text. Two volumes of uncollected prose and much verse are here collected for the first time. This de luxe, signed edition was published after the author?'s death by Macmillan & Co. and is limited to 525 sets of which 500 are for sale. Unfortunately, a substantial portion of the edition was destroyed in unbound sheets during the bombing of London in 1941.?" (Stewart. Rudyard Kipling a Bibliographical Catalogue, Toronto, 1959, p. 577.) The Sussex Edition was envisioned by his long-time publisher Macmillan as a monument to Kipling.Joseph Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) was an English short-story writer, poet, and novelist. He wrote tales and poems of British soldiers in India and stories for children. He was born in Bombay, in the Bombay Presidency of British India, and was taken by his family to England when he was five years old. Kipling's works of fiction include The Jungle Book (1894), Kim (1901), and many short stories, including "The Man Who Would Be King" (1888). His poems include "Mandalay" (1890), "Gunga Din" (1890), "The Gods of the Copybook Headings" (1919), "The White Man's Burden" (1899), and "If—" (1910). He is regarded as a major innovator in the art of the short story; his children's books are classics of children's literature; and one critic described his work as exhibiting "a versatile and luminous narrative gift".Rudyard Kipling was one of the most popular writers in England, in both prose and verse, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Henry James said: "Kipling strikes me personally as the most complete man of genius (as distinct from fine intelligence) that I have ever known." In 1907, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, making him the first English-language writer to receive the prize, and its youngest recipient to date. Among other honors, he was sounded out for the British Poet Laureateship and on several occasions for a knighthood, all of which he declined. Kipling's subsequent reputation has changed according to the political and social climate of the age and the resulting contrasting views about him continued for much of the 20th century. George Orwell called him a "prophet of British imperialism".Literary critic Douglas Kerr wrote: "He [Kipling] is still an author who can inspire passionate disagreement and his place in literary and cultural history is far from settled. But as the age of the European empires recedes, he is recognized as an incomparable, if controversial, interpreter of how empire was experienced. That, and an increasing recognition of his extraordinary narrative gifts, make him a force to be reckoned with."Stewart, p. 577.

        The Years

London: The Hogarth Press, 1937 First edition, first printing. Publisher's jade cloth, lettered in gilt; in the original cream pictorial dust jacket designed by Vanessa Bell, with an illustration of a rose surrounded by circular designs to the panels in black and brown, lettered in black and brown.About fine, with a hint of wear to the spine ends, else bright and clean; unclipped dust jacket, with a few faint hints of light soiling, otherwise extremely fresh and without wear. An exceptionally beautiful and stunning copy, as this dust jacket is notoriously fragile and prone to toning. Free of any repairs or restoration. Kirkpatrick A22a, Woolmer 423. Simultaneously the last novel to be published and the most widely read during the author's lifetime, The Years traces the history of the members of the Pargiter family from the 1880s to the 1930s. While the plot spans 50 years, the text is more a collection of vignettes, each of which represents a single moment of a given year. The Years began as a lecture Woolf gave in 1931 to the National Society for Women's Service. Building upon the issues generated in her previous novel, A Room of One's Own (1929), she wanted to take a broader view of women's social and economic lives. The Years began as a series of essays with each followed by a novelistic passage; in the end, only the novelistic passages were included, and the essays were collected as Three Guineas (1938).. First Edition.. Hard Cover. Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

        Great Contemporaries

London: Thornton Butterworth Ltd., 1937. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is a fine British first edition, first printing in a first printing dust jacket. Great Contemporaries is Churchill's much-praised collection of insightful essays about 21 leading personalities of the day - including the likes of Lawrence, Shaw, and, most famously, Hitler. Churchill's piece about Hitler can be a shock to the modern ear, as it underscores his ability to write a balanced appraisal of his subject while expressing his earnest desire to avoid the war that he would fight with such ferocious resolve only a few years later. There is a reason this book is still in print today. It was written with what has been called "penetrating evaluation, humor, and understanding." Churchill's balanced and nuanced perspectives are a good model for many of today's more polemic writers. And naturally, in the course of sketching the character of his contemporaries Churchill necessarily reveals some of his own character and perspective. Churchill's portrait of T.E. Lawrence, published here just a few years before the Second World War, might well have been written about the author rather than by him: "The impression of the personality of Lawrence remains living and vivid upon the minds of his friends, and the sense of his loss is in no way dimmed among his countrymen. All feel the poorer that he has gone from us. In these days dangers and difficulties gather upon Britain and her Empire, and we are also conscious of a lack of outstanding figures with which to overcome them. Here was a man in whom there existed not only an immense capacity for service, but that touch of genius which everyone recognizes and no one can define." (Great Contemporaries, p.164) While some of the subjects of Churchill's sketches have receded into history, many remain well-known and all remain compellingly drawn. This is as engaging a read today as it was in 1937. Here is a collector-grade copy, fine in a very good, unclipped first printing dust jacket. Collectors should note that the first printing dust jacket is unique, with changes to the front flap on the second and subsequent printings. The binding is beautifully square, clean, bright, and tight, with vivid gilt and sharp corners. We note only a touch of wrinkling at the spine heel. The contents are likewise notably bright and clean. We find no previous ownership marks. Differential toning of the endpapers corresponding to the dust jacket flaps confirms that this copy has spent life jacketed. The blue-stained top edge is clean and retains uniform, unfaded color. A trace of spotting appears confined to the bottom edge of the text block and a single, tiny spot on the fore edge. The dust jacket is unclipped, retaining the original front flap price. The vivid orange color remains very good, just slightly darkened on the jacket spine. Losses are quite modest, confined to fractional loss at the corners and spine heel, a .5 x .5 triangular loss at the upper rear hinge, and just a little loss accompanied by some wrinkling associated with a one inch closed tear at the upper front hinge. A few other short closed tears at the extremities show no loss. There is vintage brown tape reinforcement on the backside of the jacket at the spine ends. A 2 x 1.5 inch semi-circular stain at the front panel fore edge is the only blemish of note. The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover.
