        Savage Civilisation.

London: Victor Gollancz Ltd, 1937 - Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt. With the dust jacket and Book Society Recommendation wraparound band. An excellent copy in the jacket that is a little dust-soiled and with two tears at head of front panel. Frontispiece and 31 plates, 9 maps and plans, most full-page, numerous line-drawn illustrations in the text. First edition, first impression. The publisher's archive copy with small pencil mark to the jacket front panel. Savage Civilisation was the future founder of Mass-Observation's first best-seller, in which he defended the way of life of the cannibals of the New Hebrides and their rights to their own land. "Harrisson's fourth Oxford expedition (1933–5) was to the New Hebrides. When the rest of the Oxford party left Santo Island for home in 1934, Harrisson got to Malekula, where cannibalism was still widespread. Unarmed, barefoot, with no money, he made friends with the cannibals and took censuses that helped to disprove the then popular thesis that the islanders were dying out from a morbid despair caused by culture shock; he found instead that their numbers were increasing. Harrisson's focus had shifted from birds to people" (ODNB). [Attributes: First Edition]

        Out of Africa.

London: Putnam, 1937. Uncorrected proof of the first British edition. Octavo, original light blue wrappers. In very good condition with wear to the spine edges. Uncommon. From 1914 to 1931, Danish aristocrat Baroness Karen Blixen owned and operated a coffee plantation in Kenya. After the plantation failed, she returned to Europe and began to write under the pen name Isak Dinesen. Out of Africa reads like a collection of stories in which she adheres to no strict chronology, gives no explanation of the facts of her life, and apologizes for nothing. Basis for the film bearing the same name, directed by Sydney Pollack, starring Robert Redford and Meryl Streep, which went on to win seven Academy Awards.

Führer durch die Entartete Kunst [Guide to Degenerate Art.]

Berlin: für Kultur und Wirtschaftswerbung,, 1937. Octavo. Original pictorial wrappers. Wrappers rubbed and a little abraded and creased, contents tanned. A few pencilled notes and lines in the text. A very good copy. First edition, first impression of the programme accompanying the Nazis' 1937 exhibition mocking "degenerate" avant-garde art. Targeting modern art, music, and literature was an important aspect of the Nazi campaign, and as early as 1930 museums were put under pressure to conform, with certain works taken off show and uncooperative directors removed. By 1933 the first defamatory exhibitions were being staged. "The purpose of this propaganda was the bringing-in-to-line (Gleichschaltung) of the arts within a Nazi state. Art's only task was to illustrate the ideas of National Socialism and the glorification of the State" (MOMA). In 1937, coinciding with widespread confiscation of art across Germany, the Reichskammer für Bildende Künste (Reich Chamber of Visual Art) organised the show Entartete Kunst (Degenerate Art) in Munich. The exhibition gathered works that were deemed insulting to religion, the state, or the German people; produced by Jews and other minorities; or evidence of foreign and "degenerate" influences such as African culture, homosexuality, and communism. Pieces were crammed chaotically together in the exhibition space alongside derogatory comments and notes about how much the nation had paid for them. Among the 650 items were works by Otto Dix, Max Beckmann, Marc Chagall, George Grosz, Mondrian, Kandisnsky, and Paul Klee. The show was a success, attracting 2 million visitors in just four months and touring Germany and Austria for two years (Adam 1992, p. 124?-25). In 1938 a sister exhibition, Degenerate Music, targeted modern styles such as jazz. Afterward, works from this show and other confiscated pieces were added to party leaders' personal collections or sold internationally, but thousands were publicly destroyed. The artists themselves were prohibited from producing art. Those that could fled, while some continued working in secret and others were interned and died in concentration camps. Following the war some items were found by the Russian Army and made their way to the Hermitage, and in 2010 several bronze sculptures from the exhibition were uncovered during the construction of an underground train line in Berlin. The Entartete Kunst exhibition catalogue is rare on the market; six have appeared at auction in the last decade. An historically significant programme, and a stark reminder of the fate of art and artists under totalitarian regimes.

La République Espagnole au Service de la Culture (The Spanish Republic in the service of culture)

Helio-Cachan, Cachan 1937 - Folio. Unpaginated. [16]pp. Original photo-illustrated wrappers. This rare work contains no less than 93 photographs and photo-montages reproduced in photogravure, documenting the defense of culture, as well as cultural life at the front and in Republican-controlled areas in spite of the Spanish Civil War*. The book opens with an iconic photograph by David Seymour (Chim) showing a woman nursing a baby at a land reform meeting near Badajoz, in 1936. The facing page is filled with graphic photographs showing dead women and children, as well as civilians fleeing the battle front. The remaining pages show the efforts of the Popular Front government to keep investing in its youth by providing summer camps, and building schools; organizing folk festivals, conferences, lectures, and theatrical representations for the common people, as well as establishing cultural militia for soldiers at the front.Although the remaining gripping photographs are neither credited nor identified, they are clearly in the manner of Robert Capa and Gerda Taro.Text in French. Wrappers and interior in overall very good condition. * The significance of the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) as major event in Spanish and European history is well-known. Beyond the implications of the civil war in terms of Spain's own history, the war is viewed, retrospectively, as a prelude to the larger ideological conflicts between fascism, communism, and democracy that eventually consumed all of Europe in World War II. The Spanish Civil War is also remembered as a testing ground for new techniques and technologies of both twentieth-century warfare - as immortalized in the bombing of Guernica - and twentieth-century media as represented by the rise of war photography and photojournalism. In addition to being an important political event of the twentieth century, the Spanish Civil War was the catalyst for some of the most dramatic imagery of the last century. Among the most striking images are photographs of the war and its effects. Robert Capa's "Death of a Loyalist Militiaman" (1937) is perhaps the most iconic photograph from the Spanish Civil War and remains one of the most acclaimed war photographs of the twentieth century. Capa and the other well-known photographers of the period, such as Gerda Taro and David Seymour, are often cited as the primary representatives of early twentieth-century war photography.         AN ARTIST IN AMERICA (signed)

New York: Robert McBride & Company, 1937. First Edition. Octavo, 276 pages, with 64 two-color reproductions of Benton's drawings. The book is bound in blue buckram, with a stain at the front edge of the spine and a rather worn though intact dustjacket that shows a panel of Benton 's Missouri mural done for that state's capitol. This copy beloged to Robert E. Nuese Jr., a bookseller in West Cornwall, Connecticut, who was a long-standing friend of Benton's and who owned a number of Benton's paintings. Nuese's bookplate, of which a scan is enclosed, was designed by Benton. This copy is inscribed on the half-title page "To Rbt. E. Nuese from Thomas H. Benton" and also bears a dime-sized squiggle of a drawing that I believe is by Nuese's wife Josephine. It is also signed by Benton's wife Rita, as well as by art historian Thomas Craven. Craven, a long-time friend of Thomas Hart Benton, had been Benton's roommate in Greenwich Village on their respective returns from France and wrote "Thomas Hart Benton: A Descriptive Catalog..." in 1939. Nuese had moved to West Cornwall from his job as an advertising copywriter in New York in 1930, and had founded Hayloft Books and Prints, an antiquarian shop with a small printing operation, Hayloft Press, which was used to print work for writers such as Mark Van Doren, also of Cornwall. The signatures seem to be the product of a country weekend in rural Connecticut, possibly when the book was first published or a few years later when Craven's catalog was published, although no date is given. A wonderful copy.

Paul Strand Offers Some Advice to a Novice Screenwriter

New York 1937 - ALS, three pages on 2 pages of stationary. Dated 1 March 1937, writing from his East 9th Street address, Strand offers some gentle counsel to his correspondent on how to get his film made. To wit: ".Obviously a script of this nature would require the fullest kind [of] production facilities --large scale sets-- etc-- Unfortunately I have no connection.with any of the big shots of Hollywood.I wish I could be of more definite help in this but as I say, my own sphere of influence, such as it is, does not lie in those areas." Strand had taken a hiatus from still photography, producing a number of documentary films, and continued to do so until the late 1940's, when he went back to taking pictures. Correspondence from Strand is not particularly common, and this example shows him at his patient, compassionate best, taking the time and trouble to answer a question that probably should not have been put to him in the first place. Intersecting folds from mailing, trivial edgewear, else fine, with a strong, bold signature at the close. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

[Paris]: [Georges Hugnet], [1937] - Original uncut sheet (659 × 511mm) of 21 numbered black-and-white postcards printed in collotype on green paper. Titles in French and English, with one card additionally translated into German, to verso with 'Post Card' and 'Printed in France' markings and the printed faux postal cancellation 'La carte surréaliste garantie'; edges / margins toned, several closed tears to the top and right edges, lightly cockled, a little light soiling and creasing. A very good copy. La carte surréaliste is a series of 21 postcards initiated and edited by Georges Hugnet, who became involved with the Surrealist movement in the 1930s after being introduced to André Breton by their mutual friend Tristan Tzara. Hugnet continued to contribute to the movement until 1939 when he was excommunicated by Breton for refusing to end his friendship with former surrealist Paul Éluard. The participating artists and their depicted artworks are: 1. Marcel Duchamp ‘Ampoule contenant 50 c.c. d'air de Paris / Ampoule containing 50 c.c. air of Paris’; 2. André Breton ‘Poème-objet / Poem-object’; 3. Max Ernst ‘Le triomphe de l'amour / Triumph of Love’; 4. Paul Éluard ‘On tue comme on respire / They kill as easily as they breathe’; 5. Dora Maar ’29, rue d’Astorg'; 6. Joan Miró ‘Horaire / Time-table’; 7. Salvador Dalí ‘La mélancolie gâteuse des chiens comme une vertigineuse descente en ski / Senile mélancholy [sic] of dogs like a dizzy ski-glide’; 8. Hans Bellmer ‘Deux demi-soeurs / Step-sisters’; 9. Man Ray ‘Ce qui nous manque à tous / What we all lack’; 10. Yves Tanguy ‘Le marchand de sable / The sandman’; 11. Oscar Domínguez ‘Ouverture / Opening’; 12. Hans Arp ‘Côté à ouvrir / Open this side’; 13. Georges Hugnet ‘Au pied de la Lettre / Word for word’; 14. Meret Oppenheim ‘Ma Gouvernante / My Nurse / Meine kindermädchen’; 15. René Magritte ‘La solution de rébus / The key to the riddle’; 16. Jacqueline Breton ‘Pont du demi-sommeil / Bridge of drowsiness’; 17. Roland Penrose ‘La Terre en bouteille / Bottled earth’; 18. Marcel Jean ‘Paris à vol d'oiseau / Bird's eye view of Paris’; 19. Wolfgang Paalen ‘A l'échelle du désir / The scale of desire’; 20. Nusch Eluard ‘Bois des Iles / Precious woods’; 21. Pablo Picasso ‘Posisson d'Avril / April fool’. Reports of the total edition vary with references to either 250 copies or 360, with the print run on different coloured papers including pink, green, and yellow. Uncut sheets such as the present copy appear to be rare, the only other example we could locate was offered in the Daniel Filipacchi sale at Christies in 2004 where it realised €8,800.
