[Paris]: [Georges Hugnet], [1937] - Original uncut sheet (659 × 511mm) of 21 numbered black-and-white postcards printed in collotype on green paper. Titles in French and English, with one card additionally translated into German, to verso with 'Post Card' and 'Printed in France' markings and the printed faux postal cancellation 'La carte surréaliste garantie'; edges / margins toned, several closed tears to the top and right edges, lightly cockled, a little light soiling and creasing. A very good copy. La carte surréaliste is a series of 21 postcards initiated and edited by Georges Hugnet, who became involved with the Surrealist movement in the 1930s after being introduced to André Breton by their mutual friend Tristan Tzara. Hugnet continued to contribute to the movement until 1939 when he was excommunicated by Breton for refusing to end his friendship with former surrealist Paul Éluard. The participating artists and their depicted artworks are: 1. Marcel Duchamp ‘Ampoule contenant 50 c.c. d'air de Paris / Ampoule containing 50 c.c. air of Paris’; 2. André Breton ‘Poème-objet / Poem-object’; 3. Max Ernst ‘Le triomphe de l'amour / Triumph of Love’; 4. Paul Éluard ‘On tue comme on respire / They kill as easily as they breathe’; 5. Dora Maar ’29, rue d’Astorg'; 6. Joan Miró ‘Horaire / Time-table’; 7. Salvador Dalí ‘La mélancolie gâteuse des chiens comme une vertigineuse descente en ski / Senile mélancholy [sic] of dogs like a dizzy ski-glide’; 8. Hans Bellmer ‘Deux demi-soeurs / Step-sisters’; 9. Man Ray ‘Ce qui nous manque à tous / What we all lack’; 10. Yves Tanguy ‘Le marchand de sable / The sandman’; 11. Oscar Domínguez ‘Ouverture / Opening’; 12. Hans Arp ‘Côté à ouvrir / Open this side’; 13. Georges Hugnet ‘Au pied de la Lettre / Word for word’; 14. Meret Oppenheim ‘Ma Gouvernante / My Nurse / Meine kindermädchen’; 15. René Magritte ‘La solution de rébus / The key to the riddle’; 16. Jacqueline Breton ‘Pont du demi-sommeil / Bridge of drowsiness’; 17. Roland Penrose ‘La Terre en bouteille / Bottled earth’; 18. Marcel Jean ‘Paris à vol d'oiseau / Bird's eye view of Paris’; 19. Wolfgang Paalen ‘A l'échelle du désir / The scale of desire’; 20. Nusch Eluard ‘Bois des Iles / Precious woods’; 21. Pablo Picasso ‘Posisson d'Avril / April fool’. Reports of the total edition vary with references to either 250 copies or 360, with the print run on different coloured papers including pink, green, and yellow. Uncut sheets such as the present copy appear to be rare, the only other example we could locate was offered in the Daniel Filipacchi sale at Christies in 2004 where it realised €8,800.         AN INTERESTING ARCHIVE OF ART AND CORRESPONDENCE BETWEEN AMERICAN ARTIST HAROLD SMITH AND DANIEL ROCHFORD, MANAGING EDITOR OF THE SPORTSMAN AND LATER ESSO EXECUTIVE, 1937-1969

Boston and New York, 1937. With numerous examples of Smith's art, including two watercolor studies for his November, 1932, football cover of The Sportsman magazine. 1 vols. A few minor wrinkles, folds, and an occasional tear, else in uniformly fine condition. From the estate of Daniel Rochford. With numerous examples of Smith's art, including two watercolor studies for his November, 1932, football cover of The Sportsman magazine. 1 vols. Archive of a Sportsman Magazine Artist. An extremely interesting archive, chronicling the personal friendship and professional relationship of two colorful individuals. During Daniel Rochford's five-year tenure as Managing Editor of The Sportsman, Harold Smith did a number of small black and white drawings for the magazine, and at least one cover, of a stylized formation of football players, two watercolor studies of which form part of this collection. Rochford left the magazine in 1935 to enter the public relations field, subsequently joining Standard Oil of New Jersey, and, until Smith's death in 1969, gave the artist a number of Esso commissions for brochures and film strips, as well as other work. The archive includes approximately 35 ALS from Smith (some 65 pages), and two post cards, about 30 carbons of letters from Rochford, mostly dating from the 1940s on Esso matters, plus some other correspondence. In addition, included in Smith's art works are are nine pencil sketches for 1930s political cartoons, two pencil advertisement roughs for Mt. Tremblant ski area and four watercolor skiing sketches, nine sheets of pencil sketches, possibly for a book or article, eight amusing ink on tissue sketches for Esso publications, one black and white and four watercolor caricatures of the artist and others, and a particularly delightful 18 x 24 sheet of 19 watercolor scenes illustrating a 1946 visit Smith paid to the Rochfords to do their portraits. In his last years, Rochford regretted that distance and circumstance prevented the possibility of he and Smith collaborating on a book. It is a regret the viewer of this archive will share. A SPLENDID COLLECTION.

Addresses of the President of the United States on the Occasion of His Visit to South America, November & December 1936

United States Printing Office, [Washington, D.C.] 1937 - First edition, one of 75 (but probably one of only 7 in this binding). 97, [3] pp. 1 vols. 4to. A sumptously produced White House Christmas book, commemorating FDR's nearly month-long diplomatic mission to promote "hemispheric solidarity" with South America. The book was issued in an uncertain, though undoubtedly strictly limited, number, with two issues--in full pigskin, as seen here, and half pigskin and marbled boards. The colophon calls for 75 copies, with the more desirable full pigskin binding scheduled to run to 50 copies for distribution to South American dignitaries and the half-leather isssue of a planned 25 copies reserved for FDR's personal use and distribution at the holidays. Documents at the Library at Hyde Park suggest that the full edition of 75 copies was not achieved (cf. Horowitz, "Carmichael Collection") and that as few as seven were ever bound in full pigskin. This copy, one of the "foreign" issues, was nonetheless INSCRIBED to FDR's Sectretary of the Treasury Henry Morgenthau on a specially printed leaf: "To the Honorable Henry Morgenthau, Jr Secretary of the Treasury of the United States" (printed) and inscribed below in the President's hand, "From his old friend/ Franklin D. Roosevelt" Bound in full light bown pigskin, with metallic plaque of the Seal of the United States inset into the upper cover, now with a fine patina, pigskin doublures and silk endpapers. Fine. In quarter leather and marbled boards pull off slipcase First edition, one of 75 (but probably one of only 7 in this binding). [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Original Illustrated Storyboards from "Ding Dong Doggie

1937. unbound. Exceedingly rare complete set of storyboards for the classic 1937 Betty Boop cartoon short "Ding Dong Doggie," remarkably drawn by Fleischer artist and animator Tom Johnson. 8.5 x 11 inches, graphite pencil (with some highlighting in red and blue), consisting of seven highly detailed pages (more than forty frames) with descriptive motion captions. Story Line: Impressed by a dalmatian fire dog he sees, Pudgy goes against Betty's orders and follows the fire dog to a fire at the general store. Pudgy tries to help out, but the fire takes on an (animated) life of its own and gets the better of Pudgy. In the end, Pudgy is happy to run back home to Betty Boop, who gives him a good spanking for disobeying her. Additional information is written in the hand of Dave Fleischer who uses a pencil color code to keep track of the productions progress. A red check mark indicates that the scene was animated; blue indicates that the background was complete; green lets everybody involved in the project know that the scene was sent to cameraman Al Windley. A wonderful item from the Golden Age of animation. Gently worn but still in very good condition.
