Despair. Translated from the Russian by the author.

London, John Long Ltd. 1937., 1937. FIRST ENGLISH EDITION. Crown octavo, pp. 287 (+ 24). Elegantly hand-bound in full black oasis morocco leather, spine gilt-lettered in six compartments with raised bands, gilt title stamped to upper cover, marbled endpapers, top edge gilt, publisher's original cloth bound in at rear. Internally clean; a fine copy. [Nabokov] decided to translate Otchaianie [Despair] himself. To his chagrin, Despair fared no better than Camera Obscura had, and Nabokov blamed his English publisher, Hutchinson, for releasing his sophisticated works under its pulp fiction imprint, John Long. He later referred to the novel as "something more than an essay on the psychology of crime" but admitted: "[it] turns out to be a half-baked thriller - even when I translate it myself!" In 1965, he overhauled this version, rewriting much of the original text. This revamped version was serialized in Playboy at the end of that year, and won the magazine's annual Best Fiction award, which included a $1,000 cash prize. © 1999 The New York Public Library, Photographic Services & Permissions

A MONOGRAPH RELATING TO THE FABRICATION OF PAPER & TIN FOIL & THE USE OF PAPER I

[Chillicoth] 1937, Mountain House Press. Morocco spine over. pictorial paper boards, 79P., bibliography, signed by Hunter. illustrated with photos, and a large number of actual paper. samples [wanting 2], else complete, color paintings. R A R E. A stunning and marvelous reference containing actual paper samples. The whole work was printed by hand by the celebrated paper scholar, author and prolific writer on hand-made paper, Dard Hunter. He was the author of numerous other rare and important books on hand-made papers relating to: Japan, Korea, Viet-nam, Siam, as well as others. Please inquire with us for other titles in stock. * CONTENTS: This work contains 48 real specimens of Chinese ceremonial papers, as well as the most beautiful gold & silver foil samples produced in China. The hand-painted joss, "Door," "Kitchen," and other "Gods" are done with the utmost care and attention to detail, all finely painted in polychrome. Its important to point out, that these "Door Gods" were replaced every New Year, the old ones were burned in a ritual, while the new ones were affixed to doors and door jams throughout the house, kitchen and other places. They did not survive, nor were the old ones ever kept as it was considered bad luck, so there are none which survive to this day except for a few found in this book or collected by foreigners. The paintings are exceptionally ornate, reflecting the large number of "Gods" respected and used for good luck and protection during the New Year. Mock money samples representing silver coins as well as a sample silver coin are tipped in. Several of the samples are large and folding, there are also 6 folding pages of text and illustrations. * There are two bamboo paper samples the first is dated from K'ang Hsi [1662-1723], the second is from Ch'ien Lung [1736-1796]. Both are "laid" papers and are from books of the period, one has Chinese characters and Manchurian the other only in Manchurian. These samples are tipped in and nicely described. * A fine suite of eight black & white photographs showing the process of Chinese paper-making as well as tools associated with the art are exhibited. Following also a substantial essay on the techniques of hand-made papers employed in China. * THE BINDING & EDITION: FIRST & ONLY LIMITED, EDITION OF 125 COPIES, SIGNED AND NUMBERED BY THE AUTHOR. This beautiful work was hand-bound by Peter Franck, the spine is red morocco with gold-stamped titles. The covers are covered boards printed from original woodblocks used in making wall decorations for the apartments of the last Emperor of China. The corners are in vellum, the text is printed on paper made by hand in the Orient from mulberry bark. * COLLATION: The work contains 9 photogravures, 2 specimens of old paper printed text, some 48 original ceremonial paper samples, spirit and related papers, 7 illustrations and other graphic plates. Some of the woodcut illustrations are large folding types and very impressive ! * CONDITION: The binding is very nice with minor and usual rubbing to the head/tail of spine, the vellum corners are bright and without any wear. The contents is clean, occasional offsetting which is usual for this work, otherwise a very condition. Some of the samples have minor tears, wrinkles again a common feature of this work. Still in very clean collector's condition. * This is truly one of Dard Hunter's most lavish and beautiful books on hand-made papers. * BIBLIOGRAPHY: Dard Hunter: MY LIFE WITH PAPER * Dard Hunter: PAPERMAKING * Joesf Hejzlar: EARLY CHINESE GRAPHICS *[Yuen shih Pan]: SPECIAL EXHIBITION COLLECTORS' SHOW OF TRADITIONAL CHINESE WOODCUT PRINTS. * CHINESE POPULAR PRINTS: Leningrad 1988 * Shucun Wang: PAPER JOSS: Eeity Worship Through Folk Prints. * Clarance Day: CHINESE PEASANT CULTS: Being a Study of Chinese Paper Gods. * Schlosser 38 * Color scans can be sent by email.         [Photo Album]: Civilian Conservation Corps Camp in Illinois

Illinois. 1937. Oblong quarto. String-tied flexible red cloth with "Photographs" embossed on front board. Ownership signature, modest edgewear, very good or better, the images are near fine. 138 gelatin silver images. Various sizes between 4.75" x 3" and 8" x 10". Perhaps a dozen or more images have been either removed or fallen out, several loose images are laid in and might account for at least some of these. 16 of the images are hand colored, somewhat amateurishly, but with pleasing results. Most of the images are well captioned.Album kept by Bullard of his service at a Civilian Conservation Corps Camp, mostly in Macomb in Western Illinois. There are many images of young men shown seeding fields, constructing masonry, rock dams, and locks, lounging around the camp, sailing, eating, hitchhiking, wrestling, throwing the javelin, in baseball uniforms, and an image of a boy posed in front of a carnival sideshow poster. Although there appear to be a few family photos, including a young woman posing in an early version of a bikini and at the pool with friends, the vast majority are of the young C.C.C. men going about their daily business. An unusually nice and focused album.Census date indicates that Bullard was born in Illinois in 1918 and apparently his construction training bore some fruit, as the 1940 census shows that he worked as a laborer at a brickyard in 1940. .

        You Have Seen Their Faces

1937 - BOURKE-WHITE, Margaret and CALDWELL, Erskine. You Have Seen Their Faces. New York: Modern Age Books, (1937). Quarto, original photographic stiff paper covers. $4200.Scarce soft-bound Modern Age edition (published same year as cloth-bound first), inscribed on the half title, “For Mr. Jack Meike, Cordially Margaret Bourke-White,” a pioneering classic with 75 deep photogravures of the Dust Bowl by Bourke-White and text by novelist Erskine Caldwell.“This ‘word-and-picture portrait of the share-cropping South’ told the truth in both text and image about a reality hidden to most Americans at the time” (Roth, 94). As one of Life magazine’s first photojournalists, Margaret Bourke-White “helped create and define the look of picture magazines in the United States.” During the Dust Bowl, her skillful wedding of two seemingly incompatible styles, a “hard-edged theatrical style partaking of the machine-age esthetic… [and a] no-nonsense style indebted to the Farm Security Administration’s photography project. [She brought] into high relief the disparity between industrial society and those displaced by it” (New York Times). “The most commercially successful of American documentary photobooks… and one of the most controversial,” the highly influential You Have Seen Their Faces was a collaboration with Bourke-White’s future husband, writer Erskine Caldwell (Parr & Badger I:122, 140). As issued without dust jacket. See Open Book, 124. Interior fine, lightest edge-wear, minimal rubbing to spine ends of bright fragile paper covers. A near-fine copy, scarce inscribed.         John Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack for 1937 - 1937 Wisden - Original Hardback - Very Good for Year.

1937. Hi, This lot is an Original 1937 Hardback Wisden . It is in very good condition, the era of 1933 to 1937 were not the best of hardbacks as Wisden swapped materials in 1933, it resulted in poorer quality Wisdens but I am pleased to say that this 1937 is far better than most for the year. The front and spine gilt is excellent for a poor year and the boards are very good, there are a few light marks mainly to the front but still nice boards. The pastedowns are fabulous and very yellow, the hinges are excellent and the internal pages are very clean. Some spotting to the page block else would be a 9. By far superior to many of the same year. Nice photoplate, Hard to find in good condition, this is not too far off excellent. More Photos on request. Payment: Cheque

Murder à la Richelieu (Signed First Edition)

Garden City: Doubleday, Doran, 1937. First Edition. First Edition. INSCRIBED by the Blackmon to author Peggy Gaddis (Erolie Pearl Gaddis Dern, 1895-1966) on the front endpaper, in the year of publication: "Affectionately, to the Best of Friends / Peggy Gaddis / From the author / Anita Blackmon (Mrs. Harry Pugh Smith) / August 29, 1937." Blackmon wrote extensively as Mrs. Harry Pugh Smith, with notable titles like "Handmade Rainbows" (1936), "Happy-Go-Lucky" (1938), and thousands of short stories, many of which were published in romance magazines in the 1930s. This is the first of two "Adelaide Adams" mysteries, the other being "There Is No Return" (1938). Her relationship to Peggy Gaddis is so far undocumented, but the two did publish titles under the Arcadia House and William Godwin publishing firms (as well as a number of shared magazine appearances), where it is likely the two crossed paths. This association of the two writers is unique, given the relative obscurity of their prewar publications. Very Good plus lacking the scarce dust jacket. Slight spine lean and light bumping to the spine ends, light foxing to the top page edges and endpapers, and light fading to the spine.

The cloth of the book is bright and fresh, tiny bit of darkening to spine -- still bright and clear, all gilt lettering showing with complete clarity. This is a fine copy with just a hint of darkening where the glassine has chipped. Pages are perfect, not a hint of foxing or darkening. The slipcase is VG++ or near fine -- no splits or cracks, numbered on the spine as issued. A beautiful, fresh copy.
