And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street

The Vanguard Press, New York 1937 - A magnificent Association copy of the 1937 true 1st edition (Younger & Hirsch, pgs. 14-15) of Dr. Seuss's first published children's book. THIS COPY IS NOT ONLY INSCRIBED BY DR. SEUSS (IN A CLEARLY VERY EARLY HAND) BUT, PERHAPS JUST AS SIGNIFICANTLY, IS ALSO INSCRIBED BY MIKE MCCLINTOCK, THE KEY FIGURE IN THE ORIGINAL PUBLICATION OF THE BOOK. MCCLINTOCK WAS NOT ONLY THE BOOK'S EDITOR --AND ITS EARLIEST CHAMPION-- BUT WAS ALSO THE HUSBAND OF HELENE MCCLINTOCK (TO WHOM THE BOOK WAS DEDICATED) AND THE REAL-LIFE FATHER OF "MARCO" MCCLINTOCK, THE LITTLE BOY AFTER WHOM DR. SEUSS NAMED THE MAIN CHARACTER. IN FACT, IN HIS INSCRIPTION ON THE VERSO OF THE FRONT FREE ENDPAPER, JUST BELOW DR. SEUSS'S, MCCLINTOCK SIGNS "DITTO--MIKE MCCLINTOCK (MARCO'S FATHER)". TO QUOTE A PASSAGE FROM "9 THINGS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT DR. SEUSS", "A CHANCE SIDEWALK ENCOUNTER LED TO DR. SEUSS'S FIRST CHILDREN'S BOOK. AFTER A 27TH PUBLISHER REJECTED HIS FIRST MANUSCRIPT, DR. SEUSS WALKED DEJECTEDLY ALONG THE SIDEWALKS OF NEW YORK, PLANNING TO BURN THE BOOK IN HIS APARTMENT INCINERATOR. ON MADISON AVENURE, HOWEVER, HE BUMPED INTO DARTMOUTH FRIEND MIKE MCCLINTOCK, WHO THAT VERY MORNING HAD STARTED A JOB AS AN EDITOR IN THE VANGUARD PRESS CHILDREN'S SECTION. WITHIN HOURS, THE MEN SIGNED A CONTRACT, AND IN 1937 VANGUARD PRESS PUBLISHED 'AND TO THINK THAT I SAW IT ON MULBERRY STREET', WHICH LAUNCHED THE EXTRAORDINARY LITERARY CAREER OF DR. SEUSS. 'IF I HAD BEEN GOING DOWN THE OTHER SIDE OF MADISON AVENUE, I'D BE IN THE DRY-CLEANING BUSINESS TODAY', HE SAID LATER." This remarkable Association copy is lacking its dustjacket and does show light soiling (especially at the rear panel), a bit of wear along the edges and clear tape evenly reinforcing the spine. There's also pencil to the copyright page and light creasing along the lower-edges of the pages. Still though, it's solidly Good+ to VG- and is sturdy and very presentable. And, given the incredible story behind the book's publication, this is historically a very important, one-of-a-kind copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

A spectacular copy, square, tight, clean, unmarked and probably unread, marred only by fading of blue top-stain; about Fine jacket, completely free of tears and edge wear, but spine panel lightly sunned (black lettering and design undiminished). Truly, one for the vaults. Goldstone-Payne A7a.

        The Late George Apley

Boston: Little, Brown, 1937 - First Edition; this copy has ÒLovely Pearl Ó on page 19; there are variants (states) of this within the first printing, but as a point it is of dubious or no significance. Often erroneously referred to as an Òissue,Ó this term would indicate that one saw publication before the other. The bibliographical terms Òedition,Ó Òprinting,Ó ÒissueÓ and ÒstateÓ are precise terms, not synonymous and not interchangeable, although they are often erroneously treated as such. Along with at least one C.S. Forester Hornblower title printed at the same time, this bookÕs paper exhibits longitudinal oil marks from the printing press. We have never seen a copy of either novel that lacks these, although there is some variation among copies in their extent and location. Near fine in a dust jacket with very minor soiling and wear. Inscribed by the author, ÒInscribed for Mary Hemingway Field. John P. Marquand, October 15, 1945.Ó While signed or inscribed copies of this title are not unknown, they are uncommon. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize for fiction in 1938, preceded by Gone With The Wind and followed by The Yearling. Ronald Colman played the title role in the 1947 film.         To Have and Have Not

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1937. First edition. Octavo, original black cloth. Fine in an excellent price-clipped dust jacket with some wear to the spine crown. To Have and Have Not was Hemingway's first since A Farewell to Arms was published eight years earlier, follows the life and adventures of Harry Morgan from rum-running to revolution. Brimming with criticism directed at American capitalism and the bureaucracy of the Roosevelt administration, the novel explores social circumstances and situations in Key West, "that paradise of the 'haves' and purgatory of the 'have nots." "In To Have and Have Not, Hemingway for the first time showed an interest in a possible solution of social problems through collective action" (Hart, 327). Basis for the Howard Hawks film co-scripted by Faulkner and featuring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall.
