And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street

New York: The Vanguard Press, 1937. Hardcover. Good +. A magnificent Association copy of the 1937 true 1st edition (Younger & Hirsch, pgs. 14-15) of Dr. Seuss's first published children's book. THIS COPY IS NOT ONLY INSCRIBED BY DR. SEUSS (IN A CLEARLY VERY EARLY HAND) BUT, PERHAPS JUST AS SIGNIFICANTLY, IS ALSO INSCRIBED BY MIKE MCCLINTOCK, THE KEY FIGURE IN THE ORIGINAL PUBLICATION OF THE BOOK. MCCLINTOCK WAS NOT ONLY THE BOOK'S EDITOR --AND ITS EARLIEST CHAMPION-- BUT WAS ALSO THE HUSBAND OF HELENE MCCLINTOCK (TO WHOM THE BOOK WAS DEDICATED) AND THE REAL-LIFE FATHER OF "MARCO" MCCLINTOCK, THE LITTLE BOY AFTER WHOM DR. SEUSS NAMED THE MAIN CHARACTER. IN FACT, IN HIS INSCRIPTION ON THE VERSO OF THE FRONT FREE ENDPAPER, JUST BELOW DR. SEUSS'S, MCCLINTOCK SIGNS "DITTO--MIKE MCCLINTOCK (MARCO'S FATHER)". TO QUOTE A PASSAGE FROM "9 THINGS YOU MAY NOT KNOW ABOUT DR. SEUSS", "A CHANCE SIDEWALK ENCOUNTER LED TO DR. SEUSS'S FIRST CHILDREN'S BOOK. AFTER A 27TH PUBLISHER REJECTED HIS FIRST MANUSCRIPT, DR. SEUSS WALKED DEJECTEDLY ALONG THE SIDEWALKS OF NEW YORK, PLANNING TO BURN THE BOOK IN HIS APARTMENT INCINERATOR. ON MADISON AVENURE, HOWEVER, HE BUMPED INTO DARTMOUTH FRIEND MIKE MCCLINTOCK, WHO THAT VERY MORNING HAD STARTED A JOB AS AN EDITOR IN THE VANGUARD PRESS CHILDREN'S SECTION. WITHIN HOURS, THE MEN SIGNED A CONTRACT, AND IN 1937 VANGUARD PRESS PUBLISHED 'AND TO THINK THAT I SAW IT ON MULBERRY STREET', WHICH LAUNCHED THE EXTRAORDINARY LITERARY CAREER OF DR. SEUSS. 'IF I HAD BEEN GOING DOWN THE OTHER SIDE OF MADISON AVENUE, I'D BE IN THE DRY-CLEANING BUSINESS TODAY', HE SAID LATER." This remarkable Association copy is lacking its dustjacket and does show light soiling (especially at the rear panel), a bit of wear along the edges and clear tape evenly reinforcing the spine. There's also pencil to the copyright page and light creasing along the lower-edges of the pages. Still though, it's solidly Good+ to VG- and is sturdy and very presentable. And, given the incredible story behind the book's publication, this is historically a very important, one-of-a-kind copy.

        English Homes

Country Life [and others], London & New York 1937 - (15 3/8 x 10 5/8 inches). Numerous illustrations, some full-page. Publisher's blue cloth, upper covers and spines lettered in gilt (usual uneven fading, some wear) A complete set of this unparalleled record of the larger domestic architecture of England from the Norman invasion to the beginning of the Regency period (1066-1820). By the early 1920s, the photographic archives of Country Life magazine offered an outstanding range of images of the exteriors and interiors of many of the most important houses in England. Drawing on this resource, Tipping gives a history of most of the architecturally important homes and includes over 4,600 illustrations. This record is particularly valuable as a large number of photographic images of furnished interiors are given of houses that have since been demolished. In reviewing the issue of volume I, The Professional Architectural Monthly commented on the scope and ambitions of the series: "This volume forms, it might be said, the undercroft on which the upper stories of English architectural development are reared. In it are laid the bases of the evolutionary history of house-planning, designing, and decorating in the land throughout all succeeding phases of both Gothic and Renaissance styles. But while the main purpose is architectural, here as throughout the series, the human element is kept well to the fore by narration of the home and public life of the owners of the various castles and manor-houses that are carefully described and profusely illustrated" (July, 1921). The individual volumes are as follows: Period I, vol.I. Norman and Plantagenet (1066-1485). First printing, 1921. Period II, vol.I. Early Tudor (1485-1558). Second edition, 1929. Periods I & II vol. II, Mediaeval & Early Tudor (1066-1558). First printing, 1937. Period III, vol.I. Late Tudor & Early Stuart (1558-1649). First printing, 1922. Period III, vol.II. Late Tudor & Early Stuart (1558-1649). First printing, 1927. Period IV, vol.I. Late Stuart (1649-1714). Second printing, 1929. Period IV, vol.II. The work of Sir John Vanbrugh and his school (1699-1736). First printing, 1928. Period V, vol.I. Early Georgian (1714-1760). First printing, 1921. Period VI, vol.I. Late Georgian (1760-1820). First printing, 1926. Published between 1921 and 1937, sets are rarely found complete and given the length of time between the publication of each volume, there is always a variety in the blue binding cloth used, particularly with the final published volume (Periods I & II vol. II). A foundation text for the study of English domestic architecture. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Phineas Kahn: Portrait of an Immigrant

London: Jonathan Cape, 1937 - First Edition. Very good in dust jacket. Presentation copy; inscribed by the author in the year of publication. Blumenfeld was a mysterious figure, whose claim to being Jewish remains dubious (his family was Sicilian, at least immediately). However, one might ask who would claim that who was not? Okay, perhaps some might, but to have done so at that period might not have been the most advisable time to do so. Steven Berkoff, the outspoken English actor, wrote an introduction for the novelÕs 1988 re-issue. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Our Wandering Continents.

Edinburgh: Oliver and Boyd,, 1937. An Hypothesis of Continental Drifting. Octavo. Original red cloth over flexible boards, spine lettered in gilt, blind frame to front board. With the dust jacket. 48 diagrams to the text, 1 folding. Spine gently rolled, extremities lightly bumped. A very good copy in the toned and slightly rubbed dust jacket with a few nicks at spine-ends and a short closed tear to the head of the front panel. First edition, first impression of "one of the most important geological books of the twentieth century" (Nisbet, Living Earth, p. 147). Du Toit, a South African geologist, presented firm evidence from palaeontology, sedimentology, glaciation and rock types in order to develop Alfred Wegener's still-controversial theory of continental drift, originally proposed in 1912. Du Toit notably contrasted the glacial deposits of Gondwana with coal deposits of the same age found in the continents of the Northern Hemisphere. "To resolve this apparent climatological paradox, he moved the Gondwana continents together such that the coal deposits were located at the equator. He named this northern landmass Laurasia. It consisted of present-day North America, Greenland, Europe, and Asia (except for India, which was part of Gondwana)" (Monroe and Wicander, eds, The Changing Earth, p. 29).

Soviet Economics. Five Year Plan. Rare.

1937 - Rare (Second) Five Year Plan Soviet Economics. This is a carbon copy of a translation of a Socio-Economic Report on the Soviet Union's Five Year Plan of 1933-1937. This of course is a very significant time in the Soviet Union—and significant for mostly bad reasons, as with the NKVD and massive political and social repression, manipulating the criminal code, establishing a new constitution, starvation/famine practices, establishing labor camps and gulags, and of course purges (as in the Great Purge of 1938), and so on. This report is headlined Rosja Sowiecka (Soviet Russia) No. 12, (62/63), March 30, 1934, Warsaw. Contents: I: Social-Economic Record of the U.S.S.R. Reform of the Central Soviet Offices 4pp Contributions in the Organization of Soviet Economy (Laws of September 9, 1929, and March 15, 1934). Stages in the Soviet Deflation Policy, 4pp Unemployment Among the Intelligensia as a Result of Deflation, 4pp Planning and the Disaster Arising from a Permanent Reorganization of the U.S.S.R. 4Pp The Decree of March 15, 1934, in the History of Stalin's Policy 5pp The System of Control in the Organization of the Soviet State, 3pp Decrees of February 10 and 28, 1934. Investigations made of the sources of the legal state reform decided upon by the Seventeenth Congress of the Communist Party. 11pp. Individual Initiative in the Economic Administration of the USSR, 3pp Soviet Industry What is the Present Organization of Soviet Industry. 4Pp Economic Necessity for Diminishing the Burden of the Federal Government, 5pp Consequences of a Liquidation of Trusts and Associations 3pp The Breaking of the “Soviet Triangle” 3pp The Financial and Currency Policy of the USSR Total Payment of Soviet Debts in Germany 7pp The Collectivization Balance Sheet in Currency Figures, 5pp Liquidation of Soviet Foreign Indebtedness 1933-1935 2pp The Soviet Comemrcial Policy and Foreign Trade Good Crops and a Decline in Agricultural Exports (1932/3) 4pp The Loss of Former Gains in the Export of Farm Products, 3pp Statistics of the Soviet Commercial Turnover During the Last Ten Years (import and exports) 1p Comments on the Export Capacity of Soviet Agriculture 7pp Industrial Exportation in 1933 4pp Hope Based Upon America and the Uncertainty of Soviet Policy 5pp Soviet Imports in 1933 4pp Decline of Soviet-German Trade 2pp. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Vom Wesen und Werden deutscher Formen Band I-III

Leipzig, Verlag von E. A. Seemann, 1937-1941. Erstausgabe, EA, erste Auflage in sehr guter Erhaltung. - \"Warum handgebunden?
