        Orientations.

8vo. Original dark blue cloth, blocked in gilt; pictorial dust-wrappers, map endpapers; pp. xviii, 624, with frontispiece, 13 plates (including one not listed, perforated to be torn out if found offensive, and a facsimile of a T. E. Lawerence letter), two text illustrations, fold-out map and one map in the text; initial blank inscribed by the author to Bertram Thomas, dated October, 7, 1937. First edition, signed presentation copy. Sir Ronald Henry Amherst Storrs (1881-1955) presents his views on the Middle East gained from his long experience summed up in this book, as a high-ranking British colonial administrator of the region, and Orientalist (he had studied together with Sykes at Cambridge). ' Storrs was intimately involved from the time of the initial approaches to the British government by Abdullah, son of Hussein, the sherif of Mecca, about the likely British attitude to the Arabs exercising their rights in their own country. Abdullah suggested a relationship between Britain and Arabia in which the Arabs would have internal self-rule and Britain would administer foreign relations, an idea Storrs liked and which was compared to the relationship between Afghanistan and Britain ... Storrs was part of the Arab bureau formed in Cairo in December 1915, to which T. E. Lawrence was attached in January 1916, and a shared interest in classics led to a lasting friendship between the two men (Storrs was the principal pallbearer at Lawrence's funeral in 1935). On 10 June 1916 Hussein raised the Arab revolt, but the momentum seemed uncertain and in October 1916 Storrs secured permission to take Lawrence as a companion on a mission to Jiddah to reorganize it. In Seven Pillars of Wisdom Lawrence wrote of Storrs as being the most brilliant Englishman in the Middle East and described his love of music, literature, sculpture, and painting, but also suggested his limitations: "His shadow would have covered our work and British policy in the East like a cloak, had he been able to deny himself the world, and to prepare his mind and body with the sternness of an athlete for a great fight" (Lawrence, 57). Lawrence recorded that on board ship, en route for Jiddah, Storrs discoursed with Aziz al-Masri, an Arab leader, on Wagner and Debussy while sitting in a red leather armchair and that the great man's sweat turned the seat of his trousers a vivid scarlet.' (Oxford DNB). In the 1920s he was in charge of Jerusalem and Judea, defending Zionism, before becoming governor of Cyprus. The book covers a plethora of regions visited during Storr's long career from 1905 to 1932. Provenance: From the library of the explorer and Arabist, and political officer at Shatra during the Iraqi uprising in 1920, Bertram Sidney Thomas (1892-1950). He was the first European to cross the Empty Quarter, and highly admired by T. E. Lawrence.

Of Mice and Men - A Play in Three Acts - SALESMAN'S DUMMY

Covici Friede, New York 1937 - RARE SALESMAN'S DUMMY with only 16 pages of printed text, which has numerous variants compared to the final version. A previous owner has highlighted many of the variants lightly in pencil. Book near fine with white lettering on plain brown cloth. Jacket has a few abrasions. It differs from the final version, being a half inch taller, and the rear panel and rear flap of the jacket are blank. Also, the cursive "h." of the jacket designer is fully present on the jacket, whereas it appears half-clipped on the regular edition. Certainly one of the rarest Steinbeck items, and most interesting. It gives a glimpse of Steinbeck's final editing decisions, which were evidently ongoing only weeks before publication. This copy, like the one in Goldstone and Payne, is stamped in red "NOV 5 1937 on the front endpaper; unlike the former, the "5" is not crossed out and replaced with "NOV 23," the actual publication date. The textual pencil notations may indicate this copy is that same one that was offered in the Harry Valentine collection, which was described as having similar notations. The Valentine copy is described in 1980 Bradford Morrow catalogue. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

New York: Harper and Brothers, , 1937. Quarto. Pictorial paper boards, black cloth backstrip, pictorial endpapers. With the dust jacket. Housed in a full blue morocco solander box. Walt Disney Studio colour and black and white illustrations throughout. Light wear to extremities, rubbing to corners, occasional spotting to pages and a few pages with light creasing, page 64 with a very tidy professionally repaired closed tear, gift inscription to copyright page, in a very bright dust jacket with just a touch of rubbing at corners and ends of spine. A very attractive copy. First edition, first printing. A lavishly inscribed copy by Walt Disney and 51 of the 64 animators who contributed to making of the film. This is almost certainly one of the copies from RKO's first International Sales Convention at the Hotel George V in Paris, inviting 24 potential European distributors (dubbed "The European Foreign Legion"). The agenda included a screening of Snow White, who was Disney's distributor. For this important two-day business meeting, Disney orchestrated the signing of a number of copies of the book version of Snow White to be given as gifts. He signed boldly at the bottom of the title page, instructing the movie's animators and other creative personnel to sign the title page and opposite, as well as on the front free endpaper. This is one of those few, wonderful signed copies, boasting, in addition to Disney's, signatures from 51 of the film's 64 principal creators. The majority of images for Snow White have been attributed to noted artist Gustaf Tenggren, whose signature appears at the top of the front free endpaper (verso). In addition to Tenggren, signees include six others of the nine lead animators, later affectionately called by Disney his "nine old men:" Les Clark, Milt Kahl, Ward Kimball, Eric Larson, Wolfgang "Woolie" Reitherman and Frank Thomas. The remaining autographs include those of character designers, art directors and supervising animators. Other notable signatories include character designers Albert Hurter and Joe Grant; art directors Charles Phillippi, Terrell Stapp, McLaren Stewart, Harold Miles, Ken Anderson, Kendall O'Connor and Hazel Sewelll and supervising animators Ham Luske and Vladimir Tytla.

The Hobbit Signed by JRR Tolkien

UK: George Allen & Unwin, 1937. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Very Good. The Hobbit Signed by JRR Tolkien First Edition First Impression George Allen & Unwin 1937. Only 1,500 copies were printed. No inscriptions, no foxing or browning, no loose or damaged pages. Clean and unmarked throughout. In original green cloth covers showings signs of wear. SIGNED by JRR TOLKIEN by way of loosely inserted autograph, written on a bookplate-sized piece of gummed paper inscribed: 'for Mrs Gould'. It was given to Mrs Gould by Tolkien himself after she had helped him with some pension affairs in 1971. She met Tolkien on several occasions and, as thanks for her help, he offered to give her some signed books. Because her work contract prevented her from accepting gratuities, she was unable to accept. Instead, as a consolation, he sent a gum-backed signed slip of paper to her home which she could then attach to one of her own books. The slip of paper has since remained in the envelope it was sent in, alongside a typed letter from Tolkien's secretary - JM Tolhurst - who was the wife of Tolkien's friend Dr Tolhurst. Dr Tolhurst was dining with Tolkien on the evening that the author was taken ill and subsequently died. Further images on request.

        Chinese Ceremonial Paper.

      - Chillicothe: Mountain House Press, 1937. 4to, 79, (3)pp., with 50 paper specimens, many folding, plus collotype frontispiece of a furnace for burning sacred paper, 8 collotype illustrations, and two block prints with photos of the blocks that made them. Quarter leather with paper over boards block printed in gilt, backstrip tooled in gilt, slight wear to foot of backstrip and board edges, occasional small stain to top margins, very good. The often extremely fragile specimens are in excellent condition with only occasional tears to the largest folding examples. One of 125 numbered copies signed by Dard Hunter and printed by him on paper handmade in Asia. A remarkable work impossible to recreate or reproduce. The many annotated paper specimens were gathered by Hunter during journeys in China, "as well as in Indo-China, Java, Sumatra, Siam, Malay Peninsula, and other Asiatic countries where the Chinese have emigrated" and include mock-money, both ancient and contemporary, ornamental burning envelopes and trays, and examples of paper gods. Hunter's work is of pivotal importance in the history of American book making. Immersed in the Arts and Crafts movement at Elbert Hubbard's Roycroft company, Hunter went on to found the first handmade paper mill in America and to create arguably the world's first "one man" books: books he printed on paper he had made with a typeface he had designed, cut, and cast himself. In Chillicothe, Ohio, he founded Mountain House Press and for the next 46 years dedicated himself to the study of papermaking, travelling around the world for his research and authoring 20 books on the subject.         The Book of Newfoundland Volume One to Six

      S. John's: Newfoundland Book Publishers, Ltd., 1937. The Book of Newfoundland - Volume One - Copyright 1937. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This book is intended primarily to interest and inform those Newfoundlanders who reside in Newfoundland; and tose other Newfoundlanders, possibly greater in number, who reside in all corners of the earth; and that uncounted number of non-Newfoundlanders who are, for a variety of reasons, already interested in, but perhaps not well informed about, Newfoundland. This publication will carry to the rest of the British Empire and to the world at large a fuller and more authoritative account of the people, institutions and conditions of Newfoundland than has hitherto been available. Near Fine. Edges of binding slightly rubbed. The Book of Newfoundland - Volume Two - Copyright 1937 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "It gives me great pleasure to express my approval and endorsement of this "History of St. John's," which contains so much valuable information regarding our city, and to tender my hearty congratulations to the compiler: a young man of great ability, and prominently identified with the Boy Scout Movement in St. John's. I believe this History will prove of interest to our citizens at home and abroad, and to the people of Newfoundland generally." Andrew Carnell, Mayor. Fine condition. The Book of Newfoundland - Volume Three - Copyright 1967. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Confederation in this volume. Confederation with Canada is surely the greatest single event that has happened to us since our Island was discovered. The biggest thing to happen to us since the coming of Confederation is the emergence of Labrador, and its recognition as the greatest storehouse of undeveloped natural wealth left on the North American Continent. Fine condition. The Book of Newfoundland - Volume Four - Copyright 1967. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Labrador in this volume. The Book of Newfoundland - Volume Six - Copyright 1967 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Fine condition "I have felt great satisfaction producing these volumes which may be unique among the Provinces of Canada. I know of no other case of a Province producing a six-volume work about itself. There have been several sets of books about Canada as a whole, but the Book of Newfoundland concerns itself, in Volumes one and two, solely with the country of Newfoundland and in Volumes three, four, five and six, the Province. They have been published over a period of thirty-eight years, 1937 to 1975." by Joseph R. Smallwood. (Ref. #ACC-C190).. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine. 9" x 12" Tall. Canadian Geography.
