        White Russia].

Izd. Gl. pravleniya Zarubezh. soyuza russkikh voennikh invalidov New York 1937 - Quarto, issue 1 (all published). 128 pp., with numerous photographic plates and maps. Fine example in the original printed and decorated wrappers. First edition of this fine portfolio containing a history of the White movement during the early years of the Civil War. Includes biographical information and a number of memoirs about the movement and its leaders, as well as a richly illustrated "Portrait Gallery of the Leaders of the White Movement of the 1st Period of the White Struggle", with biographies. Of unusually large size, this was clearly an expensive undertaking, fully printed on glossy paper. Although others may have been envisaged, this is the only volume that was produced. Denisov fought in the South of Russia during the Civil War, rising to become commander of the Don Cossack Army in 1918. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Cahiers d'Art, 4-5 - Joan Miro "Aidez Espagne"

Paris: Editions Cahiers d'Art, 1937. Original. Softcover. Miro pochoir in MINT condition. The magazine is not: Covers are detached but present. Spine is missing, and signatures are separating. Pages themselves are, for the most part, clean but with light age toning to margins and light wear to some pages at top edge. One page of bw illustrations (front/back) has been removed and a section cut off, the rest laid back between pages.. Original color pochoir, red/yellow/blue/white/black, on Arches paper, with matching but blank facing page/cover, bound into the magazine. There is a caption, in black script, at the bottom of the plate. Magazine wraps are celery green/blue (front) and white (back), both with black lettering. 164 pp. with the color Miro, and otherwise, bw illustrations throughout. This particular issue is the 12th year of the periodical. This issue contains, Pablo Picasso: Guernica - Histoire d'un tableau de Picasso" by Christian Zervos and other articles about Picasso, Franco (Spanish Dictator), an article by Paul Eluard, and the fabulous Miro pochoir, along with relevant articles. The contents are full of bw images of Picasso's work. The Miro, however, is the pride and star of this issue. The vivid-color print was a statement opposing the rise of Facism in Spain. The work was created specifically for this periodical but originally meant to be th design for a French postage stamp to raise financial support for the Spanish Republic (thus the "1 FR" in the image). The stamp, however, never was created. The caption, in French, translates as: "In the present conflict I see the decrepit forces of the Facists, and on the other side the people, whose vast creative resources will give Spain a strength that will astonish the world." (paraphrased from the description of Galerie Michael, theirs derived from the art blog, Hyperallergic) A very scarce copy of this iconic and atypical work by Miro, especially in this condition.

The Campbell - Ewald Company" Campbell-Ewald held the advertising account for Chevrolet from 1919 to 2010, one of the longest advertising agency -- corporate client relationships in US business history. Here then is offered this [evidently] unique Chevrolet Advertising Exhibit guest book and photo album which documents the above announced exhibit, and which provides an invaluable historical record of the entire Chevrolet advertising campaign for 1937, with proposed slogans, images, dealer posters, and photos. The 119 guest signatures record the presence of a virtual who’s who of General Motors, Chevrolet Motor Division, and Campbell-Ewald at the day, including C.P. Fisken the Chevrolet Motors Advertising Head, Joseph H. Neebe, Head of Campbell-Ewald Company during the 1930s, and Marvin Coyle, the Chevrolet General Manager who steered the company through the worst years of the Great Depression. The 10 glossy photos capture & record all the print ads, magazine ads, dealer brochures, dealer announcements, promotional materials, and spectacular photographs showing the Chevrolet worker, dealer, customer & product. Such items include the dealer posters extolling the virtues of 85 Horsepower and peak economy, Knee-Action Chevrolet, and how Chevrolet was the Only Complete Car Priced so Low for the car-buying public. In addition, the promotional guest book includes all the vote tallies by attendees, showing those exhibits, newspapers, magazines, photographs, and outdoor advertising they felt was most compelling of those displayed. A fascinating glipse into the workings of the pre-MadMen world of automotive advertising.

Verve: An Artistic and Literary Quarterly: Volume I, Number 1

Verve, December 1937. First Edition. Softcover. Good. UNCOMMON, COLLECTIBLE COPY of the first-ever issue of the classic art quarterly, VERVE (Vol. 1, No. 10 published in 1937. This stunningly high-quality production, a compendium of contemporary trends in art, photography, and literature, features the work of numerous artists still regarded as legends today. This copy remains bright, striking and remarkably clean for a volume 8 decades old. This squarebound volume shows a loose sewn/glued binding, with cover delicately attached; all pages share the binding glue and remain present. Spine is faintly sunned and shows one thin horizontal scrape across lower spine; cover corners show minor bumping and faint creasing; minor handling wear and scratching also to the cover, which overall yet remains complete and bright. Table of contents reads like a who's-who of early modern art and art philosophy, including Picasso, Matisse, Miro, Klee, Leger, Maillol, Brassai, Man Ray, Guichard, Cartier, Andre Gide, John Dos Passos, Frederico Garcia Lorca, Andre Malraux, Georges Bataille, Henri Michaux and many others. This issue is an essential document in the history of 20th century art and photography, and in the modern philosophy of art. The introductory mission statement: "VERVE proposes to present art as intimately mingled with the life of each period and to furnish testimony of the participation by artists in the essential events of their time. It is devoted to artistic creation in all fields and in all forms. VERVE has adopted a traditional form. It will present documents as they are, without any arrangement which might detract from their naturalness. The value of its elements will depend on their character, the seletion of them that has been made and the significance they assume through their disposition in the magazine. That the illustrations may retain the import of the originals, VERVE will utilize the technical methods best suited to each reproduction. It will call on the best specialists of heliogravure in colors and in black and white, as well as of typography, and will not disdain to employ the forgotten process of lithography. The luxuriousness of VERVE will consist in the publication of documents as fully and as perfectly as possible.

London: Macmillan and Company,, 1937. [Including Plain Tales from the Hills; The Phantom Rickshaw; The Light That Failed; Gunga Din; The Jungle Book; The Second Jungle Book; Captains Courageous; Kim; Just So Stories.] 35 volumes, large octavo. Original full tan niger morocco by James Burn & Co. for Macmillan, titles to spines gilt, raised bands, double line rule to boards gilt, top edges rough gilt, other edges uncut as issued, marbled endpapers, twin gilt and blind rules to turn-ins, printed on handmade paper, the first sheet of each signature bearing a Ganesha watermark. Volumes individually housed in orange paperboard slipcases as issued. A fine set with just a modicum of the usual entirely organic variation in colour; slipcases slightly worn and with the occasional dampstain or minor split. The Sussex Edition, the definitive edition of Kipling's works; number 221 of a limited edition of 525 numbered sets signed by the author on the limitation leaf. During the last years of his life, Kipling was engaged in a complete revision of his works, with a view to having them published in Britain (as here) and in America (the Burwash edition). In both cases, he signed sheets for the editions before his death and the editions appeared posthumously. Although 525 sets of sheets for the Sussex edition were prepared, far fewer were bound and many were lost to enemy action as they lay in the publisher's warehouse. Laid in in the first volume is the publisher's eight-page prospectus, which gives a detailed description of this superb edition. This is the first set we have handled to come complete with the original slipcases.

        Original Book Illustration Art.

      - This east coast watercolorist and children's book artist illustrated and often also wrote a wide array of children's books from the 1930s into the 1960s -- including "Wilderness Pet," "Wiggly and Giggly the Little Twin Bears," "Whitetail: King of the Forest," "The Three Puppies," "The Small One," "The Nutcracker of Nuremberg," "The Bluebird," "The Night Before Christmas," "The Enchantment of Santa Claus," "The Christ Child," "Pussy Cat Talks to Her Kittens," "Polly Parrot," "Piccolino," "Is There a Santa Claus" as well as some "Dick and Jane Basic Readers." Offered here is the near complete original illustration art for Smock's 1937 children's book "Jocko," written by Dorothy Winchell and published by Albert Whitman & Co. of Chicago. Represented here is almost the entire book, from front cover art through closing "The End" image -- lacking only 3-4 pages (front board graphic, frontispiece, pages 21 and 31). Most are in the form of ca. 10" X 15" heavy stock art boards, most with typeset text blocks, pagination and other typeset elements stripped in. All are beautifully inked in black and shaded in pale blue. There is a smaller form full-color title page and half-title page and sixth text page, these with the text portions entirely hand lettered. Very good. Stripped-in text blocks are usually slightly discolored from the rubber cement with which they were affixed; occasional light soiling and bit of occasional edgewear. Many original tissue overlays are present, and these are generally heavily chipped and sometimes partial given their delicate nature, though many contain pencilled coloring instructions, etc. Four drawings are present in oversize form (two 22" X 15", two 15" X 18½"). Overall quite attractive and quite displayable. Jocko the monkey is a fictional character seen in 19th century texts such as the 1875 short story "Jocko the Monkey" by Fanny P. Seaverns. The Steiff company issued a monkey stuffed animal named Jocko in the late 19th century, and various other Jocko the Monkey products have appeared over the years, from cookie jars to posters. There were a series of silent short films about Jocko in the 1920s, etc. -- all interesting predecessors to Hans and Margret Rey's "Curious George," which debuted in France in 1939. "Jocko" is the charming tale of "a bright little monkey" named Jocko and his owner, an organ grinder named Rollo. Through no fault of his own, Jocko gets lost and causes accidents and chaos all about him. He ends up the center of attention at a circus parade. Jocko is asked to join, but luckily Rollo finds him at the last moment and they are happily reunited. A delightful collection from the height of this illustrator's fame. It's most unusual to find the nearly complete artwork from an entire book of this period. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
