IN PARENTHESIS seinnyessit e gledyf ym penn mameu

Faber 1937 - First edition. Original buff cloth printed in blue on the spine, in grey printed dustwrapper. Author's presentation copy, inscribed on the title to Eric Gill's brother, Evan, "David Jones for Evan Gill July 29th 1964". With the author's corrections to the Welsh on the dedication page. A near fine copy with Gill's bookplate to the front pastedown, and a contemporary cutting tipped in to the front blank announcing this book as the winner of the Hawthornden prize, in a very good dustwrapper indeed which shows a little wear to the head of the spine but is generally clean and crisp. Three black and white plates, two reproductions of designs for etchings and one map, all by the author. The author's first book and most celebrated work, which takes the form of an epic prose poem set in the first world war, based on the author's own experiences in the trenches. It was ten years in the making and was eventually helped to publication by T.S. Eliot, who hailed the book as "a work of genius". It won the 1938 Hawthornden prize. "This work of a poet-painter has its every word chiselled out of experience, and it is probably the World War I monument most likely to survive." - Stephen Spender (review in the NY Times). David Jones began his long association with the Gill family in 1922, when he became an early pupil of Eric Gill and was briefly engaged to Gill's daughter, Petra, shortly afterwards. In Parenthesis was itself printed by Gill's printing firm Hague and Gill. Jones will have known Evan through Eric and helped him with his bibliography of his brother's work. Comprehensive letters (written in German or English) to art dealer Israel Ber Neumann (1887-1961) in New York City, reporting from travels to Italy, France and North Africa, and especially about some ideas for exhibiting in America, and the impending loss of his pictures which were shown in German museums: "[...] I hav[e] success here, true, but I always had it my life long even when it was success only amongst a small crowd of juvenile enthusiasts among w[h]ich you were one of the outstanding figures in my memory of the past [...] Recently I finished a portrait of Mr. Maisky, the Soviet Ambassador of London. I think it to be one of my best works in the near past and would like to have it invited by the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Nearly 40'000 people saw the collection referred above here in London, many more will see my painting in the country where it will be send around. Some people [say] it is the painting of this war.         Autograph letter signed ("Freud"). Vienna, 10. IX. 1937.

1937. Folio. 2 pp. Addenda. To Dr R. L. Worrall, in German, thanking him for his interesting letter, from which he has learned much, and answering some of the points raised: "I know that my comments on Marxism are no evidence either of a thorough knowledge or a correct understanding of the writings of Marx and Engels. I have learnt since - very much to my satisfaction - that both in no way denied the influence of ideas and superego-structures. That invalidates the main contrast between Marxism and psycho-analysis which I had believed to exist. As to the 'dialectic', I am no clearer, even after your letter./ For the evidence of the hypothesis of the human primal horde I must refer you to my sources, Darwin and Atkinson. I have no other arguments than theirs. Naturally I accepted from psycho-analytical experience and what it would have led one to expect"; adding that "I do not quite grasp the bearing of your question about the nature of Id. As far as I understand it I should answer in the affirmative" (translation by Ernest Jones). - Worrall had written to Freud querying his statement in New Introductory Lectures that Marxism attributes social change solely to economic forces, whereas he believed Marx and Engels took full account of social history and psychological factors; he also raised the subject of Hegel's Absolute Ideal, and enquired whether Freud's concept of an 'old man of the tribe' relationship in prehistory, as giving rise to the Oedipus Complex, derived from Atkinson's interpretation of Darwin - and specifically if the mental qualities characteristic of the Id are of prehuman rather than of human origin (see the copy of Worrall's letter to Ernest Jones, included along with Jones's translation; also included is correspondence between Worrall and K. R. Eissler of the Sigmund Freud Archives, New York). When he wrote this letter, Freud was already suffering from the cancer that was to kill him: he tells Worrall that his letter "deserve[s] a comprehensive answer" but explains that "to do that by hand would be too great an effort for my eighty-one years" and that "a personal discussion would be a pleasure for me". Six months later, Austria was absorbed into the German Reich, and three months after that Freud escaped to England, where he was to die in September 1939. - On headed paper ("Prof. Dr. Freud"); smudge to ink, tape-stains at edges especially overleaf, weak at fold.

Typescript with autograph dedication signed. London, 19. I. 1937.

1937. 4to. 11 pp. Original typescript with some autograph corrections, about the personality and works of the recently deceased poet Anna de Noailles (b. 1876): [...] In the summer of 1913, Madame Edmond de Polignac, that great Renaissance Princess of the Arts, gave me a little yellow volume of poems entitled 'Les Vivants et les Morts'. On the cover she has scribbled a line from Anna - 'Schumann, ciel d'Octobre où volent des cigognes''. An officer on short leave from Egypt has no time for reading. With his eye fixed on the calendar and his ear frightened by the ticking of the clock, he can hardly take in a picture or listen through a Fugue, for 'At my back I always hear | Time's winged chariot hurrying near'. Besides this I will make bold to confess to you that in 1913 I had never heard of the Comtesse Anna de Noailles, as a poet or even as a person. I opened the volume one morning on my return to Egypt as the Austrian Lloyd steamer glided past the jagged mountains of Crete, and did not put it down until, oblivious of time, I had turned the last page [...]". - Roland Storrs served posts as British Governor in Jerusalem, North Rhodesia, and Cyprus. "T. E. Lawrence commented in 'The Seven Pillars of Wisdom': 'The first of all of us was Ronald Storrs, Oriental Secretary of the Residency, the most brilliant Englishman in the Near East, and subtly efficient, despite his diversion of energy in love of music and letters, of sculpture, painting, of whatever was beautiful in the world's fruit [...] Storrs was always first, and the great man among us"' (Wikipedia). He published his Memoirs in 1937. - Slight traces of handling, otherwise fine.
