        Strictly From Hunger

New York: Random House, (1937). New York: Random House. (1937). First. First edition. Foreword by Robert Benchley. Fine in very good or better dustwrapper with a few tiny nicks and tears and a litttle rubbing, still a superior copy of the author's exceptionally scarce second book, a collection of short pieces including one, "Good News, Bibliophiles!" that has the temerity to make fun of first edition collectors. .

Chinese Buddhist Monasteries. Their plan and its function as a setting for Buddhist monastic life.

      - Copenhagen, Gads 1937. Folio publisher's half gilt vellum; numerous photo ills, plans & measured drawings (a couple folding, four folding plans in the pocket at end). A splendid copy in the original card slipcase. Original and best edition by miles. One of the great scholarly studies in architecture in which Prip-Moller's modesty of style and scrupulous research - devoted to setting exact measurement of the material with historical documentation and spiritual purpose - is set in a scrupulous and stylish design, producing a large and solid book outwardly very elegant and inwardly complex. Almost the embodiment of its subject. "A monumental work which, in its own sphere, has no rival at the present time, and is hardly likely to encounter one in the future." said Gosta Montell ('Geografisk Tidsskrift', b.42; 1939). Prip-Moller preached this intensity of purpose, function and meaning in his architectural polemic and practised it in his own buildings - the best known now is probably the Christian church he designed for Reichelt in Hong Kong in 1930 - and his direct influence doesn't pass unnoticed in buildings like Utzon's Bagsvaerd Church.         [The complete Hornblower:]

London: Michael Joseph,, 1937?67. The Happy Return (1937); A Ship of the Line (1938); Flying Colours (1938); The Commodore (1945); Lord Hornblower (1946); Mr Midshipman Hornblower (1950); Lieutenant Hornblower (1952); Hornblower and the Atropos (1953); Hornblower in the West Indies (1958); Hornblower and the Hotspur (1962); Hornblower and The Crisis (1967). 11 works, octavo. Recent burgundy morocco, titles and gilt ship decoration to spines, single gilt rule to boards, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. The occasional minor blemish, an excellent set. First editions, first impressions. Forester (real name Cecil Smith) was called to Hollywood to write a pirate film, working under Arthur Hornblower. However, before they had finished the script, another studio released Captain Blood, starring Errol Flynn, and using the same historical incidents that they had counted on. Rather than seeking another position, hounded by the prospect of a paternity suit, Forester jumped aboard a cargo boat bound for home. Another passenger was the photographer Barbara Sutro. In the voyage, he took a one-day cruise around the Gulf of Fonseca in the ship's motor lifeboat, and by the end of the voyage he had a new novel worked out, The Happy Return, with its characters Hornblower, Bush, and Lady Barbara. Hornblower, with all his human indecisiveness and cross-grainedness, was Forester as he wished he had the courage to be, and Forester wrote about Hornblower again and again. This set includes his unfinished novel Hornblower and The Crisis.

        Toscanini's Hooded Cape

      - A black hooded cape with red lining, owned and worn by one of the most acclaimed musicians of the late 19th and of the 20th century, renowned for his intensity, his perfectionism, his ear for orchestral detail and sonority, and his photographic memory.  He was at various times the music director of La Scala Milan, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and the New York Philharmonic Orchestra. Later in his career he was appointed the first music director of the NBC Symphony Orchestra (1937-54), and this led to his becoming a household name (especially in the United States) through his radio and television broadcasts and many recordings of the operatic and symphonic repertoire. The present striking garment comes by descent to his son, Walfredo and was acquired by us directly from his Estate.

ALS - Written Upon His Return Voyage from London and Meeting the Chancellor in Berlin

Southampton, Quebec, Toronto, New York, 1937. A mini archive commemorating Canada's Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King's journey to London and Berlin at the dawn of the Second World War, featuring an album of photographs, a manuscript letter and a telegraph, from his return voyage on the Empress of Britain. The album belonged to, and was compiled by, British politician Lieutenant-Colonel George Oldroyd Borwick, who made the acquaintance of Mackenzie King on this voyage. The manuscript signed letter is written by King on the ship's stationery, addressed to Borwick, and dated 6 July 1937 while both parties were onboard the Empress of Britain. The telegraph was sent from King on 20 July 1930 from Ottawa, to Borwick who was on another ship soon to make his voyage back to England. Album contains 111 photographs and postcards mounted onto ivory cardstock leaves with locations captioned in manuscript, as well as the itinerary (abstract logs) of two ships, and one ephemeral menu card. Oblong 8vo. album measuring approximately 26 x 19 cm, burgundy cloth boards with gilt lined borders. Photographs vary in size, the smallest measuring approximately 6 x 8 cm, and the largest 16 x 11 cm. Canada's 10th and longest-serving prime minister William Lyon Mackenzie King (1874-1950) is best known for his leadership of Canada throughout the Second World War (1939-1945) when he mobilized Canadian money, supplies and volunteers to support Britain, while at the same time boosting the economy and maintaining home front morale. Not long before the war, in June 1937, he had visited the Chancellor of Germany in Berlin, and made it clear that he would support England in the event of any campaign against her. The present album contains photographs of his return voyage to Canada. The accompanying letter was written by Mackenzie only eight days after the said meeting in Berlin, who requests a private conference with a British politician. In April 1937 Canada's Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King (1874-1950) departed from Canada for a European tour of great importance. His agenda consisted of three priorities: attending the coronation of King George VI and Queen Elizabeth on 12 May, participating in the Commonwealth Prime Ministers' conference from 14 May to 24 June, and making a visit to Berlin. In the capital city, on 29 June 1937, Mackenzie met with the notorious Chancellor of Germany, telling him that if an attack were to be made upon England, Canada would not stand aside, but would indeed actively support her Commonwealth nation. Mackenzie is said to have been impressed by the leader, as many were prior to the war, describing him as "one who truly loves his fellow man, and his country, and would make any sacrifice for their good." This album represents Mackenzie King's return voyage from England, departing from Southampton on the Empress of Britain on 3 July 1937, for Quebec City, and is accompanied by a letter written by him to British politician George Borwick who was on the same ship for a visit to America. Mackenzie's meeting with the Chancellor of Germany, including comments made regarding English-Canadian relations and political commitments would most certainly have been discussed. Excerpts from the letter: "July 6th, 1937, Suite 147-151, Dear Colonel Borwick:" "I was pleased to learn in a letter received aboard the Empress from Lord Drummond, about my fellow passengers. I should much like to have the pleasure of making the acquaintance of Mrs. Borwick and yourself, and of a talk with you about Canada." ".... meet me in my suite... we could talk more quietly than in the lounge... I am not inviting anyone to join us that we may have a bit more freedom of conversation." "Yours sincerely, [signed ]Mackenzie King" End Excerpts. From Ottawa on 20 July 1937, Mackenzie also sent Borwick a telegraph. Borwick was staying a few days at the Prince Arthur Hotel built in 1911, in Port Arthur [now part of Thunder Bay], before visiting Niagara Falls and New York City. The letter and telegraph are both addressed to Lieutenant-Colonel George Oldroyd Borwick (1879-1964), former MP for North Croydon, having served from 1918 to 1922, and who compiled the photograph album. Following a photograph and abstract log sailing itinerary of the Empress of Britain, and a photograph is of Mr & Mrs Borwick onboard, the album contains over one hundred pre-WWII nostalgic views of some of North America's eastern port cities. The Empress of Britain is seen on the St. Lawrence River. A series of photographs shows historical sites of Quebec City. Monuments and important places in Montreal are remembered in a series of postcard views. Mackenzie returned to his home in Ottawa (the 231 hectare Mackenzie King Estate in Gatineau Park), and thus parted company with the Borwicks, who cruised through the Thousand Islands before arriving in Toronto which is shown in twenty professional views. Making a sojourn slightly north, the Borwicks captured snapshot views as they passed through the Soo locks at Sault Ste. Marie and entered Lake Superior. The album further includes four (4) rare snapshot photographs of Kakabeka Falls, as well as two (2) panoramic views of Niagara Falls. The couple went on to tour New York City, staying in the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, which from their suite on the 22nd floor offered splendid city views. Twenty-three (23) classic and nostalgic views of New York City are included in the album, featuring the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State building, Time Square, Bowling Green, Radio City, the Brooklyn Bridge, Park Avenue the Hudson River docks, and so forth. [William Lyon Mackenzie King, George Oldroyd Borwick, and Mrs. Mary Borwick, all appear on the passenger ship list for the Southampton-Quebec voyage of Empress of Britain, 3-8 July 1937, available through online sources.] William Lyon Mackenzie King (1874-1950) was Canada's 10th and longest-serving prime minister. He is best known for his leadership of Canada throughout the Second World War (1939-1945) when he mobilized Canadian money, supplies and volunteers to support Britain, while at the same time boosting the economy and maintaining home front morale. In March 1936, in response to the German remilitarization of the Rhineland, King had the Canadian High Commissioner in London inform the British government that if Britain went to war with Germany over the Rhineland issue, Canada would remain neutral. In June 1937, during an Imperial Conference of all the Dominion Prime Ministers in London, King informed British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain that Canada would only go to war if Britain were directly attacked, and, furthermore, that if Britain were to become involved in a continental war then Chamberlain was not to expect Canadian support. Mackenzie King held a special interest in Berlin, Germany, stemming from the fact that he was born, and lived his early life, in Berlin, Ontario, and also a two-month stay there during his university years. Although the name of the Ontario town was changed in 1916 to Kitchener, King always thought of it as Berlin. When he was in Berlin, Germany, he often referred to his birthplace of the same name in Canada. In spite of his declarations in 1936, and his connection to German Berlin, during his meeting with the Chancellor of Germany, he expressed unwavering commitment to England in case of war. The Library Archive of Canada describes Mackenzie's visit to Berlin in 1937 as follows: "In June 1937, Mackenzie King, now 62, returned to Berlin to visit the German Chancellor... King had thought of making the visit the year before, but had been advised against it by O.D. Skelton, his Under Secretary of State for External Affairs. Canada's official foreign policy in the late 1930s was isolationist. Nothing was to interfere with the maintenance of national unity. But King had been a very successful labour mediator, and felt that he could bring these talents to bear on the threat of another world war. King had not had any formal plans to visit [the Chancellor of Germany] when he travelled to England for the Coronation of George VI, but decided to go after receiving an invitation from Joachim von Ribbentrop, the German Ambassador to Britain, and the encouragement of the British government. Arriving in Berlin on June 27, King registered at the Adlon Hotel. For the first two days he was taken to see youth camps, labour camps, the Berlin Zoo and the Olympic Stadium, where he watched a number of sports competitions from the seat that [the Chancellor of Germany] had occupied during the 1936 Olympic Games. On the morning of June 29, King met with Hermann Goering, the German Air Minister. They talked for an hour and a half about trade between Canada and Germany, Canada's relationship with Britain, and German expansion in Europe. When Goering declared that England was trying to control Germany's actions, King replied that what 'England was most concerned about, was danger of some quick, precipitate action being taken in any place, which might set the whole of Europe aflame.' (Diary, June 29, 1937)... King went next to the Hindenburg Palace for his interview with [the Chancellor of Germany]. The interview lasted for more than an hour. King showed [the Chancellor of Germany] the biography of himself by Norman Rogers and pointed out a picture of the cottage where he was born in Berlin, Ontario. '... I had brought this book with me to show him where I was born, and the associations which I had with Berlin, Germany, through Berlin, Canada.' (Diary, June 29, 1937) King spoke of being in Berlin 37 years before and living with the King praised the constructive work of [the Chancellor of Germany's] regime and then mentioned the fear and suspicion caused by German rearmament. [The Chancellor of Germany] indicated that Germany was rearming to gain respect and blamed all of Germany's difficulties on the Treaty of Versailles. He told King, 'so far as war is concerned, you need have no fear of war at the instance of Germany. We have no desire for war; our people don't want war, and we don't want war.' (Diary, June 29, 1937) King stressed the fact that Canada was a free and independent nation, even though it was a part of the British Empire. He said, however, that in the face of an act of aggression on the part of any country, all parts of the Commonwealth would stand together. When [the Chancellor of Germany] complained about the British, King assured him that England wanted peace. At the end of their meeting, [the Chancellor of Germany] gave King an autographed, framed photograph of himself. After the interview with [the Chancellor of Germany], King walked through the Tiergarten and found the house where he had lived with the Webers in 1900... That night he attended the Opera and sat in the former royal box, in the seat where [the Chancellor of Germany] usually sat when he was there. King was happy when he left Berlin. 'Looking back on the German visit, I can honestly say it was as enjoyable, informative and inspiring, as any visit I have ever had anywhere. Indeed I doubt if I ever had four days which were more interesting or indeed comparable in significance.' (Diary, June 30, 1937) He was 'tremendously relieved' and believed there would be no war... Once the war began, though, King's opinion of [the Chancellor of Germany] changed radically. On August 20, 1946, King, now 71, flew to Berlin from the peace conference in Paris, to view the damage done by the war." Lieutenant-Colonel George Oldroyd Borwick (1879-1964) was the son of Joseph Cooksey Borwick and Ellen Elizabeth Oldroyd. He was educated at Harrow School, Harrow on the Hill, London, and graduated from Trinity College at the University of Oxford. On 14 May 1915 he married Hon. Mary Cavendish, daughter of Henry Anson Cavendish, 4th Baron Waterpark and Emily Stenning. He gained the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the service of the Surrey and Sussex Yeomanry, Royal Field Artillery, and was decorated with the award of the Companion, Distinguished Service Order (D.S.O.) in 1917. He was decorated with the award of the Legion of Honour. He held the office of Member of Parliament (M.P.) for North Croydon between 1918 and 1922. He died on 27 June 1964 at age 85, without issue.
