        Red Hot and Blue

New York: Random House. 1936. First. First edition. A bit of foxing to the boards, and a touch of rubbing, all considered a very good or better copy of a book which, because of the fragile silk-over-boards binding, is generally found in poor condition. Issued without dustwrapper. Copy number 84 of 300 copies Signed by the author/composer (of which 250 were for sale). On the front pastedown is the small bookplate of the composer's wife, Linda Porter. The Porters were married from 1919 to her death in 1954, and Linda has been portrayed in film biographies of Cole Porter by Alexis Smith (1946's Night and Day) and Ashley Judd (2004's De-Lovely). Despite Cole Porter's well-documented homosexuality and the common assumption that their marriage was merely one of convenience, they appeared to be a genuinely compatible couple. .

The General Theory of Employment, Interest and Money

The London Review of Books has grouped The General Theory "...among the glories of modern publishing...edited with exemplary authority and lack of fuss..."         Small Archive Documenting Camp-life at the Dan Beard Camp, Boys Scout Troop 1 in Pike County, Pennsylvania, 1936-1938

Dan Beard Camp Near Hawley, Pennsylvania, 1936. An exceptionally scarce collection of memorabilia and ephemera from Daniel Carter Beard's summer camp. Beard, one of the founders of the Boy Scouts of America built the camp on the site of his hunting lodge, which was erected in 1883. He operated the camp from the early 1920s until 1939. Camp activities and awards were based on those in Beard's Handbook for the Sons of Daniel Boone, however campers also earned Scouting rank and merit badges as the campers formed Pike County, Pennsylvania BSA Troop #1. The collection includes 1) an 8" x 10" photograph of Beard in uniform signed "Dan Beard," 2) a typed letter on official, illustrated Boy Scouts of America letterhead signed "Daniel C. Beard," 3) five multi-color camp award certificates signed "Daniel C. Beard," 4) a number of official camp letters and records regarding one of the campers, Courtland Brown, 5) four American Red Cross first aid and life saving cards awarded to Courtland Brown at the Dan Beard Camp, 6) two 8" x 10" photographs of campers, one showing them in formation and one showing them engaged in craft activities, 7) four 3.5" x 6" photographs of campers and their tents, 8) a beaded "buckskin badge" totem, 9) two postcards of Camp Lenape, which I believe succeeded the Dan Beard Camp after it closed, and 10) newspaper articles regarding Beard's 88th birthday, his death, and his funeral. All of the photographs, signed letter, certificates, and postcards are in very nice shape. Some of the other documents have marginal insect predation. The certificates and camp photographs have scrapbook page remnants on the reverse. . Ephemera. Very Good.

        Traditional Painting of Sapporo, Hokkaido

1936. [SAPPORO - PAINTING]. Traditional Painting of Sapporo, Hokkaido. Rich Nihonga colors on silk. Three panels, each is about 28.5" X 41.5", making the entire triptych about 10 feet long. A monumental work which diplays Sapporo and its environs in a traditional birdseye style, with a backdrop of mountains, near the sea. Done in Showa 11 (1936) place names are handbrushed in an elegant hand on tiny gold-leaf cartouches affixed to the painting. A wonderful evocation of traditional art, here displaying the modern city of Sapporo with its mass transit facilities, sports coliseum, modern factories and highways, along with shrines, temples, etc., etc. Aside from a few minor damp spots in the last image which are scarcely noticeable, a beautiful work in lovely condition.

        Test Tube Baby

New York: Godwin, Publishers. Good. 1936. First Edition. Hardcover. (no dust jacket) [ex-rental library book, marked only with stamped library name on both endpapers ("Property of Green Tree Library"), moderate external wear, front hinge a little weak, spotting/soiling to covers]. The second of three pulp novels published published by Fuller under his own name in the 1930s (he claimed in his autobiography to have written many more, under a variety of pseudonyms). The story, as Fuller explained it, has to do with a young man who had been "conceived scientifically, then brought up by his mother to be the ideal son." However, Mom wasn't counting on her grown-up boy eventually learning some additional facts of life from an amoral young lady named Peggy, "a fascinating wench who may not have eaten her spinach but certainly knew her onions." A rarity for sure, and like Fuller's first novel, "Burn, Baby, Burn!," a vivid embodiment of the future film director's pulp-fiction-tabloid-journalism sensibility. .

The Princess Comes Across (Original screenplay for the 1936 film)

Los Angeles, CA: Paramount Pictures, 1936. Draft script for the 1936 film. A very interesting early draft of the script, with a cast page that includes George Raft, who was replaced by Fred MacMurray late in pre-production. Raft left the production when Ted Tetzlaff was announced as the director, as Tetzlaff had caused Lombard to outshine Raft in the duo's previous film, "Rumba." MacMurray's placement against Lombard was fortuitous, as the pair (who had made "Hands Across the Table" the previous year) went on to make "Swing High, Swing Low" and "True Confessions" after this film.& & One of the most cynical and underrated screwball comedies, with Lombard and MacMurray at the peak of their speed-talking greatness. Tightly wound into the story of Lombard posing as the (fake) Swedish Princess Olga and MacMurray's no-nonsense, accordion-playing bandleader with a shady past is a rather dense murder mystery that plays out in tandem with the screwball structure.& & Recently rebound in tan cloth, with the original blue front wrapper adhered to the front board. Front wrapper shows a date of February 4th, 1936. Title page present, dated February 4, 1936. 141 leaves, mimeograph, with blue revision pages throughout, dated variously between 2-7-36 and 2-14-36. Pages about Fine, boards about Fine.& & Harvey, pp. 214-215.

Gutenberg and the Catholicon of 1460. A bibliographical essay by Margaret Bingham Stillwell. Together with an original leaf

"Edmund Byrne Hackett, the Brick Row Bookshop, Inc." New York: "Edmund Byrne Hackett, the Brick Row Bookshop, Inc.". 1936. "Folio, pp. [10], 27, [1]; original blindstamped maroon cloth lettered in gilt, maroon cloth chemise and slipcase; generally fine. With a typed letter from Edmund Byrne Hackett laid in acknowledging payment for this copy. & & The leaf is from the imperfect Sloane- Poor- Kretch copy, leaves of which were sold by the Brick Row Book Shop as late as the early 1960s, and the bulk of which were originally distributed with Stillwell's essay in 1936. & & The leaf itself (printed in Mainz, by the printer of the Catholicon, not before 1469) measures approximately 14½"" x 11"", with rubricated initials, text in double column, 66 lines per column. The Catholicon, while not as famous as its old brother, the 42-line Bible, is noted for its being the first book to name its place of printing, and the first extensive work of a secular nature to be published. Compiled by Joannes Balbus, the text consists of a grammar and a dictionary of mediaeval Latin - it is the first dictionary ever printed - and treats the etymology of Latin terms in vogue during the Middle Ages. The leaf accompanying this copy is from the letter O, ""Occidentalis"" to ""Offela,"" and including the work ""oculus"" for which there is a 20-line definition.& & Goff B20; Hain-Copinger 2254*; GW 3182; BMC I, 39.
