        A genoux esclave

(sw) Satisfaisant couverture rigide Edition originale

        Step by Step

This is a seminal Churchill book that includes 82 newspaper articles focused on foreign affairs written by Churchill between March 1936 and May 1939, many of them containing his warnings and predictions about Nazi Germany. As a measure of Churchill's prescience and ultimate vindication, upon publication, Labour leader Clement Attlee, a political opponent who would replace Churchill as Prime Minister in 1945, wrote to Churchill: "It must be a melancholy satisfaction to you to see how right you were." Others were even more blunt. Sir Desmond Morton, military officer, government official, and appeasement opponent, wrote to Churchill: "Many years on, historians will read this and your speeches in Arms and the Covenant. They will wonder but I doubt they will decide what devil of pride, unbelief, selfishness or sheer madness possessed the English people that they did not rise as one man" and "call on you to lead them." Less than a year after publication, in May 1940, Churchill would become Prime Minister. Here is the British first edition, first printing, an unusually bright and clean collector-worthy copy, fine in a very good+ dust jacket. The green cloth binding is beautifully clean, square, and unfaded with sharp corners and bright spine gilt. The contents are bright and tight with no spotting and no inscriptions. Even the page edges remain bright and clean. The dust jacket is unclipped, still bearing the original front flap price, and is highly complete, with the only loss being minor chipping at the bottom of the spine. The dust jackets of this edition proved prone to soiling and to toning of the spines. Here, the dust jacket spine remains unusually bright and the jacket remains very clean, with trivial soiling mostly confined to the hinges and flap folds. There are closed tears at the bottom hinges to a maximum depth of about one inch. The dust jacket is protected in a removable, archival quality clear cover.         Language, Truth and Logic

New York: Oxford University Press, 1936 First American edition of perhaps the most influential English philosophy book of the twentieth century, in which he defines the verification principle of logical positivism. The first edition, published by Gollancz in January of 1936, was limited to only 500 copies. A second printing, published in April of 1936, was published in 250 copies. This American edition, printed from the English sheets, appeared later in 1936. All of these are uncommon in dust jacket. Presentation copies, however, are of the greatest rarity. In forty years of dealing in philosophy books of this nature, we have never before owned one. Publisher's blue cloth with gilt spine. Octavo. Light shelfwear, dust jacket partially browned. Jacket has light edgewear, and tear at spine has been neatly repaired internally with archival tape. A very good copy, scarce in dust jacket. Presentation copy, inscribed: "To Michael Curtis with best wishes from Freddie Ayer May 22, 1985."

LAKE TANA AND THE BLUE NILE. An Abyssinian Quest

London: MacMillan, 1936 Major R. E. Cheesman. LAKE TANA AND THE BLUE NILE. An Abyssinian Quest. Macmillan, London, 1936. First Edition in Dustwrapper. 8vo., 400pp., green cloth with gilt titles on spine & gilt canoe on front panel. 49 photo illustrations, incl. one long foldout panorama frontis. & one colored folding map at the back. Cheeseman's book painfully written for a second time after his manuscript had been stolen with his car, was the first description of much unexplored country in southern and eastern Gojjam. Cheesman was HM Consul in NW Abyssinia for 9 years & he received permission to survey the Lake Tana region & the Blue Nile as it coursed through Abyssinia to the Sudan. Cheesman travel several times to the region. He journeyed to all the related islands which had never before been visited by any European. He also made the first journey through the lake down the Blue Nile across previously unexplored territory to the furthest point reached by expeditions that had entered Abyssinia from Sudan. An extraordinary adventure & a very important book, here in hansdome collectible condition. A near fine or better copy in a near fine example of the rare dustwrapper. Extremely nice & very uncommon as such indeed. Major Cheesman was H.M. Consul for North-west Ethiopia, 1925-1934. He recorded his surprise on arriving in Ethiopia at finding that the upper waters of "one of the most famous of the rivers of the world, and one whose name was well known to the ancients" was in his lifetime "marked on the map by dotted lines", managed to map the upper course of the Blue Nile between 1925-1933. He did this not by following the river along its banks & through its impassable canyon, but following it from the highlands above, travelling some 5,000 miles (8,000 km) by mule in the adjacent country.. First Edition..

        In Dubious Battle

NY: Covici Friede. (1936). A powerful novel of migrant farm workers rising up against landowners. Written at a time when much contemporary fiction was geared toward proletarian aspirations, Steinbeck's novel could have been a mere propaganda piece; instead, it is an exploration of ideals, social protest and social justice, and the relationship of mob behavior to individual values and, as such, still resonates with relevance decades later. Tiny bookstore stamp lower rear pastedown; a fine copy in a fine dust jacket. Provenance: the Bruce Kahn collection. A beautiful copy, and nearly impossible to find in this condition; probably the nicest copy we've ever seen. In a custom clamshell box. . First Edition. Hardcover.

Address of President Roosevelt Accepting the Democratic Nomination for President of the United States

N.p. Philadelphia: N.p., 1936. (5)ff. A signed typewritten speech, given by Franklin Delano Roosevelt on June 27, 1936, in acceptance of his nomination as the Democratic candidate for president. Roosevelt signed the speech at the end in blue ink, and the pages have sixteen corrections in blue pencil, with one sentence that has been crossed out. In the 1936 election, Roosevelt was the incumbent and had already started work on his New Deal in the midst of the Great Depression. In the speech, Roosevelt acknowledges his “grave responsibility” to the American people, but, in light of the relief brought by his New Deal programs, he also emphasizes that “...we have won against the most dangerous of our foes — we have conquered fear.” He addresses economic inequality and denounces the “economic tyranny” of the “privileged princes of these new economic industries” who had “concentrated into their own hands an almost complete control over other people’s property, other people’s money, other people’s labor — other people’s lives.” At the end of the speech, he states that “...here in America we are waging a great war. It is not alone a war against want and destitution and economic demoralization. It is a war for the survival of democracy. We are fighting to save a great and precious form of government for ourselves and for the world.” Following this, in all capital letters, he closes the speech by saying “I accept the commission you have tendered me. I join you. I am enlisted for the duration of the war.” Roosevelt won the election in a landslide victory, with all but eight electoral votes, in a time of economic instability and high unemployment; his accomplishments and rhetoric were no match for his opponent, Republican Alf Landon. Pages measure 8 by 14 inches. The pages are stapled and taped together at the top, and the area stapled has been reinforced with a strip of paper adhered to the blank verso of the last page. Creases to the pages from being folded into quarters, perhaps to fit into the President’s pocket, else in fine condition.

The story of the Tuskegee experiment to bring agricultural education to African-American working farmers, told by the man who ran the program and who was the first black Agricultural Extension Agent in the U.S. The recipient, Dr. Arthur Roper, was the author of three titles of interest to African-Americans, all published by the University of North Carolina Press, perhaps the most notable being The Tragedy of Lynching.         ULYSSES. Signed 1/100 Copies

London: The Bodley Head, 1936 James Joyce. ULYSSES. Signed 1/100 Copies. London: John Lane The Bodley Head, 1936. First Edition printed in England. A fine example of this, the most beautiful edition of Ulyssses ever published, designed by Eric Gill with Homeric Bow in gilt on the cover. Quarto, calf vellum board printed on mould-made paper - number 38 of only 100 copies signed by Joyce in blue ink on the limitations page. [Total edition 1000 copies with 900 in cloth]. With the Bodley Head's printed announcement of publication laid in; in the original patterned paper slipcase with a bit of foxing & soiling to the printed numbered paper label, showing some rubbing at the slipcase edges - near fine considering it's endemic fragility. A very nice lovely example. Joyce's biographer Richard Ellman observed, "In his earlier books Joyce forced modern literature to accept new styles, new subject matter, new kinds of plot and characterization. In his last book he forced it to accept a new area of being and a new language. What is ultimately most impressive is the sureness with which, in the midst of such technical accomplishments, he achieved his special mixture of attachment and detachment, of gaiety and lugubriousness. He was no saturnine artificer contriving devices, but one of life's celebrants, in bad circumstances cracking good jokes, foisting upon ennuis and miseries his comic vision." Slocum & Cahoon A23 - The Modern Movement 42 . Signed by Author. First Edition.

With his dismissal in January 1923, because of unfavourable publicity, the project was set aside, not to be taken up again until he was posted to India in 1927 … In March 1928 he sent a clean copy of the revised text to Edward Garnett [who] had copies typed which were circulated to a small circle, among them Air Marshal Trenchard …Trenchard's concerned response led Lawrence to guarantee that it would not be published at least until 1950" (O'Brien). In 1936 the manuscript found its way to America and "in order to control publication, it was found necessary to have a copyright edition published". This copy one of those retained by Lawrence's brother A.W., his inscription "The property of A.W. Lawrence" inked to the verso of the front pastedown. Subsequent pencilled inscriptions show that this copy was presented by A.W. to Edward Eliot "on permanent loan", and, on his death in 1950, retained by his son Peter, who notes that, "A.W. Lawrence told Peter Eliot in July 1950 that he might keep this Book". The Hon. Edward Eliot was Lawrence's trusted legal adviser - in a letter to Liddell Hart in 1934 Lawrence described him as "a very balanced solicitor" (The Letters … p802) - one of three trustees for the funds raised by the publication of The Revolt in the Desert, but "the only Trustee really", Hogarth and Buxton being added in case Lawrence should ever need to "carry a point against him … if I wished it deeply" (letter to Charlotter Shaw in 1927, Wilson 791). The prohibitive price placed on this edition by Lawrence is equivalent - at a conservative estimate - to around $8m in current purchasing power. One of the great Lawrence rarities.

Typewritten Letter, Signed, On Supreme Court Stationary

1936. Cardozo, Benjamin N. [1870-1938]. [Typewritten Letter, Signed, on Supreme Court Stationary]. Washington, DC: April 2, 1936. Single 8" x 10-1/2" sheet. Light toning to letter, faint vertical and horizontal fold lines, minor short tear near center of right-hand margin along fold. An interesting letter with a large full signature. * This letter is a reply to a bookplate collector. Cardozo says he is unable to give him one because he does not use them. This letter relates to a confusing issue. People occasionally find books with "Cardozo" bookplates. These were added posthumously to mark the books that were in his library.
