'Uummannaq' 3 smukke originalfotografier af Jette Bang. Alle SIGNERET af kunstneren, i samtidige rammer (3 original vintage photographic prints by Jette Bang - in contemporary frames, all SIGNED in hand by the photographer).

Set of 3 original vintage photographs from 'Uummannaq', not dated but from Jette Bang's visit in 1936. Each app. 16 x 22 cm in frame. All signed in hand and in contemporary, gilt wooden frames.. Jette Bang (1914-1964) , important Danish photographer and film maker known for the photographs and films she shot in Greenland, depicting the country and the way of life of its inhabitants before their old culture disappeared. The present photos are from Bang's first travel to Greenland in 1936 where she spent eight months taking photographs of the traditional lifestyle of the Greenlandic Inuit, which was beginning to die out as a result of European influence. She travelled around on dog sleds and lived with the natives, sharing their way of life. The result was 400 photographs which were exhibited at the Danish Museum of Art & Design in 1937. Some were published in her book Grønland (1940) with a foreword by Minister of State Thorvald Stauning. The book was an eyeopener for the Danes and later chosen as one of the most important Danish photobooks as part of the Hasselblad Open Book exhibition 2004. - "Uummannaq" is Greenlandic for 'heart shaped' and here the name of a prominent mountain with two summits of similar height, hence the name. Uummannaq is 1,170 metres (3,839 ft) high and located on the small Uummannaq Island in the central part of the Uummannaq Fjord. It entirely dominates the landscape of the island, its base occupying its entire northern half. Formed of granite and basement gneiss, it is the most prominent mountain in the Arctic part of the west coast of Greenland. Sheltered from the coastal winds by the high, glaciated mountains of the Nuussuaq Peninsula, the area of Uummannaq Fjord is considered the sunniest spot in Greenland: Favourable weather conditions, good harbours, and proximity to the coastal route made the fjord system attractive to numerous southbound Inuit migrations in the past-the area has been settled and resettled for the last 4.500 years. Archaeological excavations in Qilakitsoq on the northeastern shore Nuussuaq Peninsula due south of Uummannaq Island revealed the existence of an ancient Arctic culture, later named the Saqqaq culture, which inhabited the area of west-central Greenland between 2500 BCE and 800 BCE

NEGRO FOLK SONGS AS SUNG BY LEAD BELLY. "KING OF THE TWELVE-STRING GUITAR PLAYERS OF THE WORLD," LONG-TIME CONVICT IN THE PENITENTIARIES OF TEXAS AND LOUISIANA

The Macmillan Company, 1936., 1936. First edition. 8vo. Cloth, frontispiece, xiv, 242 pp., introduction. Divided into two major sections we find a strong emphasis on the songs, especially reels, work songs, hollers, the blues, the talkin' blues, ballads, and a miscellany of both white influences and pardon songs. Lead Belly, a double murderer, sung his way to pardons in the Texas and Louisiana Penitentiaries. He spent twelve years on penitentiary farms working in the field, singing and "hollering" under the gun and whip. Through his music you have the background of "jazz," the history of popular and folk music among southern Afro-Americans. His blues, his ballads, his work-songs sum up the observations, attitudes and opinions of a large part of the southern Afro-American population. This is the book of Lead Belly---a creative genius among Afro-American folk artists. His story is told in terms of tunes, texts, and guitar accompaniments. It contains biographical material and annotation of the songs in his own words. Following Lead Belly's release from prison in 1934, John and Alan Lomax sought to manage Lead Belly's career as a performer. John A. Lomax brought Lead Belly to New York from the South, after he had sung his way out of prison, and has worked with him compiling and editing his songs and story. No previous substantial biography of a Black musician prior to the publication of this book, which was a commercial failure at the time and received a long review in the New York Times. The book still stands as one of the best biographies of a black musician. Lead Belly spent the last fifteen years of his life performing, influencing the music scene in blues, and eventually rock 'n' roll. Light offsetting to front and rear endpapers, a few front end pages lightly foxed, else a very good, internally clean copy in dust jacket with small chips to the spine ends and extremities. Scarce and elusive copy of an important book.

[Hand-drawn and illustrated poster]: Don't Forget Your Number. Have It Tattooed On Now

1936. Hand-drawn and illustrated poster on thick cardboard. Measuring 20.5" x 13.75". Some soiling and tack-holes in the corners, a little waviness on the cardboard, very good. A crudely lettered promotional tattoo art poster with three variant flash designs, all bearing the date 1936, urging Social Security Card recipients to have their numbers tattooed on themselves. The first Social Security numbers were issued in November of 1936 and created a certain amount of anxiety around this scheme to create a national identity system. According to DeMello in Bodies of Inscription: A Cultural History of the Modern Tattoo Community (Duke University Press, 2000): "...men and women flocked to tattoo shops to have their number tattooed on them." Perhaps the most evocative illustration of this is in Dorthea Lange's photograph "Unemployed lumber worker goes with his wife to the bean harvest. Note social security number tattooed on his arm" (FSA-OWI Collection, Library of Congress, August, 1939). This placard is a splendid example of a naive American aesthetic object, with its artwork clearly bearing a 1936 date, a direct link to the earliest days of the Social Security program, making this a compelling primary document of Depression-era social history. .

Fine in a modestly worn, very good pictorial dustwrapper with a couple of very small chips on the front panel, and a bit of age-toning, but which is attractive and intact. The story of the Tuskegee experiment to bring agricultural education to African-American working farmers, told by the man who ran the program and who was the first black Agricultural Extension Agent in the U.S. The recipient, Dr. Arthur Roper, was the author of three titles of interest to African-Americans, all published by the University of North Carolina Press, perhaps the most notable being The Tragedy of Lynching. Excellent copies in the dust jackets with very light wear to the extremities. Ticket of the Dutch department store Magasin Du Nord to each front pastedown. First edition, first impressions of the first three novels by the undeservedly obscure James Curtis, whose works rivalled those of his contemporaries Graham Greene and Christopher Isherwood. After the 1930s he began a slide into obscurity, and today is one of British literature's great "missing persons". These novels are scarce in jackets, and a set in this condition is a rarity. Original pictorial dj with title in black below; title in black on spine. Chip on dj at top of spine intrudes on the tops of two letters in the title, but it is still legible. This volume is signed by two of the short story authors, Frigyes Karinthy, and Jozsef Tersanszky, and a third author with an unidentifiable signature, and dated 29/9/37. Karinthy was a Hungarian author, playwright, journalist and poet who is known as the originator of the idea of "six degrees of separation", which he first elaborated in the 1929 story "Chains". This concept posits that every person on Earth is connected through a chain of friends or acquaintances to every other person on Earth by no more than six intermediaries, or degrees. Karinthy is also known for "Voyage to Faremido", which is a continuation of Swift's adventures of Gulliver, and "Capillaria", a satire of the struggle between the sexes. & This volume is a selection of thirty short stories by thirty Hungarian authors; introducing some of them to the English reading public. Translated into English by Lawrence Wolfe and with an Introduction by Alexander Korda.
