Florence Foster Jenkins - Record Humorously Signed and Inscribed by Samuel Barber

Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Rare privately issued gramophone recording of Florence Foster Jenkins, inscribed by Barber on the label "This great example of American singing - for Herbert - with warmest greetings / Sam Barber."<br>From the collection of Manfred Ibel (to whom Barber dedicated the piano concerto), but likely inscribed originally to Herbert Graf, stage director at the Metropolitan Opera House from 1936 to 1949.<br>Florence Foster Jenkins, an American girl born in 1868 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania to a well-to-do family, has become a legend as "the world's worst opera singer."  She made some vanity 78 rpm records for the Mel-o-tone label during World War Two, and in October 1944 hired Carnegie Hall for a recital.  The bad reviews that resulted from that recital were said to break her heart and she died a few weeks later at age 76, but the recordings have kept her name and her art alive.  In recent years there have been several plays about her, and this year there are three full-length movies.  The first, a French comedy-drama titled "Marguerite" was released earlier this year.  A second produced in Britain and starring Meryl Streep as Jenkins will be released in the USA in a few weeks, and later this year a German docu-drama starring soprano Joyce di Donato as Jenkins will premiere.  Two different full-length biographies of Jenkins have appeared within the last weeks in England, by Darryl Bullock and the other by Jasper Rees.

        Liquid-Propellant Rocket Development.

Washington D. C.: The Smithsonian Institution,, 1936. Octavo (pp. 10). Original pale brown printed wrappers, stitched as issued. 11 half-tone plates, one diagram in the text. With the neat library stamps of Phillips University Library, Enid, Oklahoma (to front and back cover) and the Zollars Memorial Library (front cover) with the accession date of 26 March 1936. An excellent copy. First edition, first printing, of a key paper by the father of modern rocket propulsion Robert H. Goddard (1882-1945). "Like the Russian hero Konstantin Tsiolkovsky and the German pioneer Hermann Oberth, Goddard worked out the theory of rocket propulsion independently . . . Having explored the mathematical practicality of rocketry since 1906 and the experimental workability of reaction engines in laboratory vacuum tests since 1912, Goddard began to accumulate ideas for probing beyond the Earth's stratosphere. His first two patents in 1914, for a liquid-fuel gun rocket and a multistage step rocket, let to some modest recognition and financial support from the Smithsonian Institution . . . With an eye toward patentability of demonstrated systems and with the aid of no more than a handful of technicians, Goddard achieved a series of workable liquid-fuel flights starting in 1926. Through the patronage of Charles A. Lindbergh, the Daniel and Florence Guggenheim Foundation, and the Carnegie and Smithsonian institutions, the Goddards and their small staff were able to move near Roswell, New Mexico. There, during most of the 1930s, Goddard demonstrated, despite many failures in his systematic static and flight tests, progressively more sophisticated experimental boosters and payloads, reaching speeds of 700 miles per hour and altitudes above 8000 feet in several test flights" (Dictionary of Scientific Biography). This is one of only two papers on rocketry published by the reticent Goddard, the other being "A Method of Reaching Extreme Altitudes" (1919). Scarce in commerce and in British and Irish institutional libraries (Copac locates copies at Aberdeen, National Aerospace Library, and Bristol only), well represented on OCLC.

Keynes' last major work was considered the most influential economic treatise of the 20th century. Keynes' General Theory ranks with Smith's Wealth of Nations as an intellectual event and with Malthus' Essay on Population as a guide for public policy.'The world-wide slump after 1929 prompted Keynes to attempt an explanation of, and new methods for controlling, the vagaries of the trade-cycle.First in 'A Treatise on Money', 1930, and later in his General Theory, he subjected the definitions and theories of the classical school of economics to a penetrating scrutiny and found them seriously inadequate and inaccurate' (PMM 423).Increasingly scarce with such attributes. Published by William Dudley Pelley, head of the Silver Shirts, a pro fascist group in the United States in the 1930s. William Dudley Pelley (March 12, 1890 - June 30, 1965) was an American extremist and spiritualist who founded the anti-semitic Silver Legion in 1933 and ran for President in 1936 for the Christian Party. Pelley became a journalist and gained respect for his writing skills, his articles eventually appeared in national publications. Two of his short stories received O. Henry awards, "The Face in the Window" in 1920, and "The Continental Angle" in 1930. Following World War I, Pelley traveled throughout Europe and Asia as a foreign correspondent, spent time in Russia and witnessed atrocities during the Russian Civil War. He developed a deep hatred for Communism and Jews, whom he believed were planning to conquer the world. Returning to the U.S. in 1920, he a Hollywood screenwriter and wrote 2 Lon Chaney films The Light in the Dark (1922) and The Shock (1923). By 1929 he became disillusioned with the film industry, and moved to Asheville, North Carolina. In 1928, Pelley said he had a near-death experience, detailed in an article for American Magazine called "My Seven Minutes in Eternity." In later writings, he wrote that during this event, he met with God and Jesus Christ, who instructed him to undertake the spiritual transformation of America. He claimed he was able to levitate and see through walls. When the Great Depression struck he became active in politics, moved to Asheville, founded Galahad College and Galahad Press. When, Adolf Hitler became Chancellor of Germany on 1/30/1933 Pelley, an admirer of Hitler, founded the Silver Legion, an extremist and antisemitic organization whose followers¿known as the Silver Shirts and Christian Patriots, wore Nazi-like silver uniforms. Biographer Scott Beekman notes that Pelley was "one of the first Americans to create an organization celebrating the work of Adolf Hitler." He founded chapters of the Silver Legion in almost every state iof the union and gained many followers. He held mass rallies, lectures, and public speeches country wide promoting anti-Communism, antisemitism, racism, jingoism, isolationism and pyramidology. He opposed Franklin Delano Roosevelt and the New Deal, founded the Christian Party and ran as its candidate for president in 1936. Pelley engaged in a long dispute with the United States House of Representatives' Dies Committee, predecessor to the House Un-American Activities Committee. In 1940, federal marshals raided Pelley's Asheville headquarters, with his followers there arrested, and his property seized. The attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 led Pelley to disband the Silver Legion, but claimed that the devastation of the Pacific Fleet at Pearl Harbor was worse than the government claimed. In 1942 he was charged with treason and sedition and found guilty of sedition, obstructing military recruiting and fomenting insurrection within the military. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison and was paroled after 8 years.         The Story of Ferdinand

Viking, 1936 An advance copy of the first edition, with "First Published September 1936 on the copyright page." The book is larger than the first edition, and has rough uncut pages. The cover also differs, with brown cloth and sections of the eventual first edition cover attached. This is obviously some sort of advance production copy, probably prepared by Viking Press for internal use. The only copy we have ever seen or heard of. It is in very good condition, with the book block lying loose in the covers. There is no evidence of glue, so the two were probably never attached.         I Didn't Get Over", two draft manuscripts and typescripts, with holograph corrections, for the short story.

[Asheville, NC: Grove Park Inn, summer, 1936]. First draft: 20 leaves, various sizes (largest 330 × 214 mm), partly triple-spaced typescript with pencil holograph amendments, completed in pencil manuscript. Second draft: 9 pages (US Letter: 11 × 8.5 ins), double-spaced typescript with pencil holograph amendments. Two original drafts, the first draft and the second and final draft, for Fitzgerald's short story "I Didn't Get Over", written in summer 1936 and published in Esquire magazine that October. The most noticeable differences between the two drafts are at the beginning and end of the piece. The title is slightly changed: in the first draft, it is "I Never Got Over"; in the second, that is amended in manuscript to "I Didn't Get Over". In the story, a former army captain who failed to make it to the front in the First World War confesses his responsibility for a training-camp accident that claimed the lives of several soldiers. At the end, the second draft, Fitzgerald adds in pencil the coda that makes the identity of the army captain clear: "I was that captain, and when I rode up to join my company he acted as if he'd never seen me before. It kind of threw me off—because I used to love this place. Well—good night." The summer of 1936 was a difficult one for Fitzgerald. From February to April 1936, he had published the essays in Esquire magazine that are now well known as The Crack-Up, the articles that helped invent confessional journalism, in which he revealed the collapse of his life and his hopes, and his determination to save himself with his art. A year or so later, he would begin work on his last, unfinished novel, The Last Tycoon. From the collection of James B. Hurley. In 1936, having just graduated from Brown University with a BA in English, Hurley left his hometown of Providence, RI and went to North Carolina looking for work. He answered a classified ad to do some typing and found himself employed by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Hurley typed Fitzgerald's manuscripts, which were written in longhand, on a Remington portable designed for double-spaced work. Fitzgerald wanted his his first drafts triple-spaced in order to edit between his lines, so Hurley turned the roller and carriage by hand to provide three spaces. Hurley worked for Fitzgerald for nine months, at the end of which Fitzgerald inscribed three of his novels to Hurley and presented him with the manuscripts of two short stories, this and the Civil War story, "The End of Hate". Both were sold at auction, Sotheby's New York, 4 Dec. 1996, the present two drafts as lot 88. The story was first published in book form in the posthumous collection Afternoon of an Author (1957).

What Vermont Means to N.Y.: Three Views.. Norman Thomas - C. Hathaway . .

New York: Vermont Federation of Labor, 1936. Lithograph poster. 21.5 x 14.25 inches. Losses to lower margin and upper corners. Mounted on linen. Announcing a three-part lecture delivered by Socialist Norman Thomas, C. Hathaway, and John C. Lawson, President of the Vermont Federation of Labor, held on Friday, March 27, 1936. The lectures and this poster were in response to the Procter Marble Company's attempt to evict striking marble workers and their families from company housing. The illustration here, "drawn in a big hurry--it had to be," shows a woman and her four children, including a babe in arms, looking back at their retreated footsteps leading to a pile of abandoned furniture, including a bed, table, armoir, and chairs. Below the group of figures Kent has written "In the Name of the Great Jehovah and the Continental Congress."

        The General.

London: Michael Joseph Ltd.,, 1936. Octavo. Original red-brown red cloth, titles to spine in silver, yellow endpapers. With the dust jacket. An exceptional copy in the bright dust jacket very slightly rubbed along extremities, the spine toned and lightly marked with a hint of fraying to foot, the rear panel faintly dust-soiled with a couple of very short nicks to bottom edge. First edition, first impression. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author to "Michael Joseph. Not the onlie begetter but nearly so. from C. S. Forester" on the title-page. A superb association copy, most recently in the collection of military historian and journalist Max Hastings, and mentioned in his introduction to the new edition published by HarperCollins in 2015. As renewed conflict with Germany became increasingly likely, the strategic failures of the British high command during the Great War were being dissected with increasing fervour, notably in the writings of Liddell Hart, whose "denunciations of 1914-18 commanders' myopia, and assertions of their culpability, won favour with some important people, including Lloyd George, Winston Churchill - and C. S. Forester. The strategic guru's vision pervades the novelist's tale about an officer who rises to high rank in the First World War. Forester was encouraged to write it by Michael Joseph, a flamboyant and gifted publisher. Joseph Â… had served on the Western Front as an officer in the Machine-Gun Corps Â… In 1936 he had just started his own publishing house, which thereafter midwifed all Forester's work" (Hastings). The 1930s were a difficult decade for London publishers, with many established houses experiencing financial difficulties or closing down. The success of The General was important in ensuring the viability of Joseph's new venture.
