        The Common Sense of Drinking

Little, Brown and Company, New York 1936 - At worst slightly dusty, but seemingly never read; a bright, near fine copy of a scarce book. The jacket exhibits very light wear and soiling. A narrow paper snag at the front spine fold, about an inch and a half long, has been mended carefully with archival tape on the verso, with no loss. The $2.00 price is intact on the front flap. The jacket is at least very good, and perhaps near fine as well. Whatever it is, it's an exceptional copy of a book never found except heavily used. This is a 1936 printing of the 1931 first edition. So far as we can tell, this is the first issue jacket, with no changes from the 1931 copies we have seen. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        SUISSE EN IMAGES LUMINEUSES

WOLFF, KATE. PERE CASTOR. SUISSE EN IMAGES LUMINIEUSES designed by Lalouve. Paris: Flammarion (1936). Square 4to (8 1/2"), flexible pictorial card coverss, Fine and unused. 1st edition. There are 12 lovely full page silhouette illustrations. Each illustration represents a different historical figure or event in Swiss history including William Tell, Nicolas de Flue, Major Davel and more. The child is to cut out the marked sections of the illustration. Then by cutting out pieces of various colored papers provided in the book, and pasting them into open sections of the full page illustration, the child can make their own illuminated pictures. The effect is most effective when held to the light. Designed by LALOUVE whose real name was Kate Wolff. Wolff was a Jewish artist forced to leave Germany in 1933. She came to Paris and began to work for Pere Castor, hiding her Jewish origins and changing her name to Lalouve, This is one of the more unusual and rare Pere Castor titles.

        Ocean Racing

1936 - (PATTON, Jr., George S.) LOOMIS, Alfred F. Ocean Racing. The Great Blue-Water Yacht Races 1866-1935. New York: William Morrow, 1936. Octavo, original blue cloth. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. $8800.First edition of this classic work on ocean racing, signed in ink on the front board by General Patton and boldly signed and dated by him ("June 27 1936") on the front free endpaper."General George S. Patton Jr. has earned a place in the pantheon of authentic American heroes". [Yet] his great success on the battlefield did not come about by chance". He read voraciously" (D'Este, Patton, 3-4, 317-18). This copy of Ocean Racing""Patton's own copy""is twice signed by him. No other military leader wrote so frequently in his letters or diary what he was reading, and no leader's library was so well-documented since Napoleon's. Patton's library, which was almost entirely inherited by his son, Major General George Patton III, was given to West Point, with just a small portion of books, including these volumes, inherited by other descendants or friends. Some years ago, when a prominent bookseller was discussing Patton's library with his son, his son remarked, "My old man could afford to buy the books and he could afford to write in them""nobody else in the army had any money." Patton's book collection remains a testament to the value he placed on books and the interest he took in them as tools for learning. This volume reflects Patton's interest in the sea. Three years after signing this volume, he had a schooner built""named the When and If""that he intended to sail around the world after World War II, a plan left tragically unfulfilled by his untimely death in 1945 after a jeep accident. With frontispiece and 30 pages of illustrations and maps. With an equation in pencil on the same page as Patton's dated owner signature. Some toning to cloth. Patton often traveled with what he was reading, even on campaigns, and his books typically show signs of substantial wear. A handsomely boxed volume with wonderful provenance.         Osiris

1936 - SARTON, George, editor. Osiris. Bruges: Sanctae Catharinae, 1936-1956. Twelve volumes. Quarto, original oversized tan paper wrappers, uncut and mostly unopened. $4800.First edition of the first twelve volumes of this important journal focusing on the history of science from ancient mathematics to alchemy in the Middle Ages to Indian astronomy. This journal, edited by respected Belgian-American science historian George Sarton, tracks the history of science and mathematics from an interdisciplinary and multicultural perspective. Of particular interest are the articles on astronomy and 12th- to 18th-century alchemy. Volume II features a lengthy paper by W.J. Wilson titled, "An Alchemical Manuscript by Arnaldus de Bruxella," which discusses the 15th-century manuscript in-depth, offering new translations of portions of the work, interpretations of Arnaldus' theories, and even includes four illustrations from the manuscript. Volume V includes an article called, "The Texts of Michael Scot's Ars Alchemie," which attempts to cast some light on the differences between the three versions of one of the most important alchemical texts extant. The entirety of Volume VI is devoted to cataloguing Latin and vernacular alchemical manuscripts in the United States and Canada, offering in-depth bibliographical information for each manuscript and reprinting portions of their contents. In Volume XI, the history of metals is discussed in 17th-century terms in Edward Hill Duncan's "The Natural History of Metals and Minerals," which views metals in terms of Milton's Paradise Lost, attempting to reconcile the conflicting beliefs of the time period from transmutation to alchemy to Ancient Greek science. Text generally fine, only lightest wear to a few original wrappers. Fine condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Autograph letter signed

1936 - FROST, Robert. Autograph letter signed. Miami, FL [postmark; i.e., Coconut Grove]: no publisher, February 3, 1936 [post mark]. Octavo (6-1/4 by 7 inches), two sheets of paper written on rectos and versos, four pages. $5800.Wonderful four-page autograph letter signed by Frost in which he gives frank advice to an aspiring poet on the paramount importance of ideas in poetry, and the necessity of "striking ideas right out of life" and finding a way to "sock" editors and publishers with these ideas rather than "merely rhyming." "This is a hard gospel," he writes. "Ideas, ideas". Ruthlessly demand them of yourself in your own work". Attack the editors with real poetic ideas and I'll bet you anything you will get published in ten years." He advises that publishing poems is a "rough job". be prepared to rough it."Though they never met, Frost and the recipient of this letter, aspiring poet and avid collector James P.J. Murphy, corresponded for nearly a quarter of a century. "Murphy was a shy man with a passion for literature and fine printing. He found both in Frost's books. The poet autographed Murphy's copies of his works""often after considerable delay""and sent him his special Christmas cards" (Burch, "Three Unpublished Letters of Robert Frost to James P.J. Murphy," in ANQ, 13:2, 35-40). Unpublished letters between the two show Frost giving the young poet sound advice on getting his poems published, and promising to get around to autographing copies of his works that Murphy had sent to him for that purpose. The autograph letter signed by Frost is undated, but the postmark of February 3 on the envelope and the post office stamp of Miami, FL, indicate that this letter was written while Frost was in Coconut Grove, a neighborhood of Miami (other correspondence with Murphy from this time period was written in Coconut Grove). The letter reads: "Dear Mr. Murphy: There isn't very much anyone can help you to in poetry. You learn to make metrical lines from reading metrical lines. Then from good models you learn to make poetic phrases. Anybody who has been successful in giving nicknames has made a beginning in poetic wording. Most of all you have to be a person of ideas""because each poem has to have at least one idea in it""and if you aren't yet a person of ideas you have to become one""you have to acquire the ability to get up ideas. Striking ideas right out of life are the most important part of it. Have them fresh and striking enough and no editor can keep you out of his magazine. This is a hard gospel. Ideas, ideas. Practice your eye on them in other peoples' work. Ruthlessly demand them of yourself in your own work. The danger with most rhymesters is they will think they are accomplishing something by merely rhyming. They don't find out their mistake till too late. Attack the editors with real poetic ideas and I'll bet you anything you will get published in ten years. There is no other road to go. Hump your mind and sock the editors with it. Maybe you are already a writer and all this is wasted on you. Well in that case try yourself on the editors. I might just say something friendly and polite about your poems. The editors are the constituted authorities. They are on their guard against poor and weak stuff. Their approval and disapproval counts. My good-natured thank you gets you nowhere. I know the editors are a human lot and make terrible mistakes (as so should we in their places) nevertheless they are what we have to break through. We are fooling ourselves if we think there is any way around them. Of course I include publishers with editors. There is no special kind of manuscript that appeals to them. Make it plain""that's all. Disinterestedly enclose a stamp for them to return it whether it deserves to be returned or not. You have a rough job ahead of you. Be prepared to rough it. Sincerely yours, Robert Frost." With accompanying envelope, addressed in Frost's hand.Fine condition. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

The Struggle for Life in Los Angles County--RARE (1936)

Self-published (?) 1936 - Rare Work on Depression Los Angeles, 1936--No Copies in WorldCat. Reimer, Edward H. and Edward Elliott. The Struggle for Life in Los Angles County. Published by Edward Reimer (825 West 8th St), Los Angeles. Printed on 11x8.5" sheets in purple ink, 107pp, running about 60,000 words. Presumably Reimer (born in NYC in 1902 according to the 1940 Census) printed the document, as well--this is an early mimeographic reproduction production, and, probably of very limited reproduction This seems also to be one of the copies from the Copyright Office, (serial A 208715, July 6, 1936), which then became part of the "Pamphlet Collection" of the Library of Congress before I purchased that collection some time ago.+++There are no copies located in WorldCat/OCLC+++ This work is a dedicated Leftie appraisal of L.A. In the Depression, mostly (it seems) from 1932 to 1934. A reading of the table of contents will pretty much tell you where writers' sensibilites were, which was for access to jobs, fair pay to those who were working, humane treatment to those not able to find jobs, supporting organizing and unions, and a push towards relief for the destitute and homeless. This is clearly seen in the chapter on the “June 1st Riot”, which took place at the Law Building at 139 N. Broadway over the poor treatment of the poor and the ignoring of the RWPU (Relief Workers' Protective Union). There is also a chapter on the Hunger March (“on the atrocities against the poor”), the L.A. Hoovervilles (there were many Hoovervilles that were set up all across the country), the “C.W.A” (Civil Works Administration) in L.A., “the Struggle Against Forced Labor Camps”, keeping May Day (1934), and so on. Copies of the first and third editions (with dating of 1936) are listed at various WorldCat libraries, but we have been unable to find a record of the 1948 edition.         Seven Symbols of Life.

London: The Buddhist Lodge,, 1936. Being an essay on eternal verities as expressed in the images of the lotus, of water, wind, fire, man, woman and child. Octavo. Original wrappers sewn at the fold, titles to front in black. Toning to wrappers around the edges, some light rubbing and creasing at the corners, a few very minor marks, but sound and internally clean, an excellent copy. First edition, sole printing, presentation copy inscribed in the year of publication by Watts on the title page, "To Francis Crowdy, from Alan W. Watts, 26.11.36". The recipient may have been writer and actor Francis Crowdy (1916-95), known for his screenwriting work for films The Mark of Cain (1947) and Hungry Hill (1947). A truly rare early book from this great figure in the dissemination and popularisation of Eastern philosophy throughout the West: OCLC records only three copies in libraries worldwide: British Library, National Library of Scotland, and one in the Netherlands; COPAC adds only Oxford - no copies are recorded at auction. To have one inscribed, presenting an exceptionally early Watts signature, is rare and desirable indeed.

London: Geoffrey Bles, 1936., 1936. First edition. First edition. Author's first and only mystery novel. Fine, tight, bright copy in dust jacket with light professional restoration to spine ends and corners. The disappearance of a volume of essays from the close-packed shelves of the library in Mr. Tomlinson's suburban villa, is the first link in a chain of events that lead to suicide and murder. Penzler p. 125 says "A retired gentleman notices a book missing from his library and he returns to the second-hand bookstore where he originally bought it hoping for a way to recover it and he gets more than he bargained for."

        through the camera's lens.

[Attributes: Hard Cover]

Ownership inscription of W. M. Deans to head of front panel of dust jacket. Dust jacket lightly worn at spine ends and slightly rubbed along joints; a bright, clean copy. First edition, first impression of this key work. Written in the aftermath of the great depression, Keynes' masterpiece is generally regarded as one of the most influential social science treatises of the century.
