Contains x, 153, [2]; xiv, 152, [12]; xiv, 102 pages printed on heavy weave paper with 3 sepia frontispiece illustrations, 78 colour plates on silk art paper, 3 fold out charts of the principal trade routes at the rear, and 5 monochrome full-page illustrations, index. Only light foxing marks to the end papers of volume III, the plates and pages are as clean and fresh as when first printed and in wonderful Fine condition, various relevant news paper clippings from the 1950's loosely inserted, the nicest first edition set we have ever seen. After coming ashore, Jack Spurling first obtained work as an actor in George Edwards' musical productions, continuing with his painting as a hobby. His ship portraits came to the attention of Frederick Hook, the editor of the popular nautical magazine 'The Blue Peter'. The publication of an initial selection of Jack's paintings proved an immediate success and Hook thereafter commissioned Spurling to produce many more works for the magazine which were published over a number of years. A regular contributor to the same magazine was Basil Lubbock, one of Britain's leading maritime authors at the time, who, between the two World Wars, wrote a series of superlative books on the various aspects of commercial sail which many still regard as the definitive record of a way of life that has now totally disappeared. In the mid-1920s, Lubbock and Spurling were approached by Frederick Hook to collaborate with him on a particularly interesting project which would come to be seen as one of the great milestones in the efforts to chronicle the history of commercial sailing ships. In his editor's preface, Hook wrote: 'Mr. Lubbock's illuminating text sets out the salient points of the history and performances of typical vessels of the clipper ship era. One chief purpose has been adequately and handily to present a selection from amongst Mr. Spurling's pictures, painted for The Blue Peter, reproducing, by a special process, their original qualities of form, movement and colour.'       Leipzig, Bibliographisches Institut, 1936 - 1942. Völlig neu bearbeitete und bebilderte Auflage mit circa 14.500 Spalten, 20.000 teils farbigen Abbildungen sowie 400 Haupt- und Nebenkarten. Vollständige Ausgabe in 9 Bänden (A - Soxhlet) mit dem gesuchten Atlas-Band, zusammen also 10 Bände. Es handelt sich hier um die seltene Prachtausgabe in so genannter Halbfranzausführung. Hellbraune bzw. beige Original-Halblederbände mit goldgeprägten Rückentiteln auf zwei dunkelbraunen Rückenschildern, Einbanddecken in dunkelbraunem Leinen und mit Lederecken. Das Werk blieb unvollständig. Von ursprünglich 12 geplanten Bänden (Grundwerk in 10 Bänden sowie zwei Ergänzungsbände) erschienen nur die Bände 1 bis 9 des Grundwerks sowie der Atlasband. Einziges während der NS-Zeit erschienenes Großlexikon, das unter unmittelbarer \"Mitarbeit\" nationalsozialistischer Parteidienststellen entstand. Hier liegt die Crux, aber zugleich auch das Besondere dieses Lexikons, das wie kaum ein anderes Werk den nationalsozialistischen Zeitgeist in seiner Komplexität widerspiegelt. Der Atlas-Band enthält unter anderem seltenes Kartenmaterial zur politischen Topographie (u. a. Gaueinteilung der NSDAP) sowie zur Wirtschaftsgeographie (Schwerpunkte der industriellen und landwirtschaftlichen Produktion) des Dritten Reiches. Als Nachschlagewerk zum Dritten Reich daher eine wichtige Informationsquelle für alle zeitgeschichtlich Interessierten.         Le Mythe d'Ulysse, tapuscrit inédit

      - S.n., s.l. s.d. (circa 1936), 49 feuillets A4 (21x26,5cm), en feuilles. - Primo nuova versione del manoscritto autografo di 17 pagine, scritto nel 1935. Manoscritto di scrittura molto denso, pieno esclusi gli ultimi 13 righe di testo stampato, con molte cancellature, correzioni e aggiunte. Dattiloscritto completo con alcune variazioni rispetto al manoscritto e una copia della edizione originale pubblicato nel 1947 e, infine, pubblicato nel 1950 è allegato. Nel 1935, Blanchot ha lavorato per tre anni a Thomas the Obscure (ha completato nel 1940), quando interrompe la sua scrittura "che non stop" per scrivere l'ultima parola, un racconto che descrive come "un tentativo di aggirare un altro libro in corso per superare la interminabile e ottenere una narrazione più lineare, ma dolorosamente complesso, una decisione in silenzio ... ". "Sicuramente iniziare a scrivere immediatamente per raggiungere alla fine (...), questo significa almeno spero di non fare carriera e trovare il percorso più breve per finire presto." In questa "Apocalypse" Blanchot porta il suo romanzo essendo scritto: Thomas, l'eroe, ed è ironicamente chiamato il nuovo potere in altro modo senza espressa "cosa è successo a lui [che] dicendo: non è successo niente ". Ma se, iniziando con l'ultima parola, Blanchot segna la fine della scrittura, è un fine che rimane inedito. E quando il libro viene finalmente pubblicato, sarà più di un lavoro già notevole: Thomas the Obscure, Amminadàb, gaffe, l'Altissimo, Death Sentence e la quota del fuoco. Un léger manque en marge supérieure de la page de titre, et une trace de trombone en tête des pages, quelques pliures marginales. Exceptionnel tapuscrit de la première fiction de Maurice Blanchot, véritable « matrice » de Thomas le Solitaire et Thomas l'Obscur. Lorsqu'en 1941 paraît le premier roman de Maurice Blanchot, le jeune écrivain avait déjà achevé deux nouvelles qui ne paraîtront qu'en 1947, mais qui furent, selon ses dires, composées durant l'écriture de Thomas l'Obscur : Le Dernier Mot et L'Idylle. Si l'on soupçonnait depuis longtemps l'existence d'un texte antérieur à ces écrits et que l'on croyait perdu, ce n'est que très récemment que l'on découvrit l'existence du mythique premier roman intitulé Thomas le Solitaire, dont nous proposions en 2016 les manuscrit et tapuscrit originaux. Bien que très différent de la version qui sera publiée, Thomas le Solitaire apparaît cependant par son héros, par la trame générale de son histoire et par des pans entiers de sa narration, comme la version primitive de Thomas l'Obscur. Ce premier Thomas devenait ainsi à quelques rarissimes documents près la plus ancienne trace écrite de Maurice Blanchot. Pourtant, dans les archives de la fratrie, se trouvait aux côtés des manuscrits des deux Thomas un ronéotype non signé, intitulé Le Mythe d'Ulysse. Clairement contemporaine des deux romans (même papier, mêmes ratures tapuscrites sous forme de petites croix, même trace de trombone rouillé) cette nouvelle de 47 pages, se révèle, à la lecture, l'évidente origine fictionnelle de Thomas. S'inspirant d'Homère, ce récit met en scène le séjour d'Ulysse sur l'île de Calypso, tout juste évoqué dans L'Odyssée qui, relatant l'arrivée et le départ d'Ulysse de l'île, fait cependant l'économie des sept années passées par le héros chez la nymphe. Maurice Blanchot s'empare de la tristesse du héros décrite dans le chant V pour inventer une histoire d'amour entre la nymphe et le marin alimentée par les récits merveilleux de l'amant qui, pour sa part, sombre dans une mélancolie causée par le constat de la fragilité humaine et le désir d'atteindre à l'immortalité. Ainsi, à partir d'une histoire d'apparence radicalement différente, Maurice Blanchot aborde dans cette nouvelle les principaux thèmes de Thomas dont ce que nous nommerons la désincarnation du récit entraînant une relation à la mort entendue comme forme de vie pure sans l'obstacle du corps. Cette nécessité de soustraire la pensée aux limites du corps, si elle parcourt tout le roman publié, prend sa source dans ce récit mythologique à travers le désir d'Ulysse : « Je me sens faible et si borné, et cependant si curieux de tout ; à chacun de mes pas, je m'arrête et trouve fermé à moi-même, ne voyant clair que pour surprendre le désir d'aller plus loin et pour faire un pas encore qui me ramène au même lieu sans issue et au même désir. H. / 1936. The author was the second son of a wealthy merchant, ‘Abbas ibn ‘Abd al-Mutalib. His mother was Umm al-Fadl Lubaba, who prided herself in being the second woman who converted to Islam. He was by the Prophet’s side during different occasions following him on his assemblies, journeys and expeditions. Abi al’Abbas was one of the early Qur’anic scholars. He was known for his knowledge of traditions and his critical interpretation of the Qur’an. He gathered information from companions of the Prophet and gave classes and wrote commentaries. This book focuses on both historical and cultural aspects of medieval Islam. Abu-l ‘Abbas Muhammad Ibn Yazid al-Azidi al Mubarrad (826-898), was an Arab grammarian. After studying grammar, he was called to the court of the Abbasid caliph al-Mutawakkil in Samarra in 860. When the caliph was killed in 861, he went to Baghdad, remaining there most of his life as a teacher. Al-Mubarrad became the leader of the Basran grammarians against the Kufan School. His judgement, however, was independent, as is shown by his attack on some points in the grammar of Sibawayh, the greatest writer of his own school. This work is considered his major contribution to Arabic lexicography. It has been edited by W. Wright (Leipzig, 1864), and published in Constantinople (1869), and this edition in Cairo (1891).       Fichtebund, Hamburg. - Fichtebundblätter. Konvolut von 28 Flublättern des deutschnationalen Fichtebund, ca. 1930 bis ca. 1936. Herausgeber ist: Deutscher Fichte-Bund e.V., Reichsbund für den Kampf gegen Versailles, Hamburg. Verantwortlicher Heinrich Kessemeier. Je 4°, 1 Blatt, bisweilen mit s-w-Abb. Alle Blatt mit handschr. Nummer oben und mittiger Knickfalz, sonst gut. Der Fichte-Bund verteilte seit 1921 Millionen von kostenlosen Flugblättern, die durch die Organisation in zahlreiche Sprachen übersetzt wurden und so nicht nur in Deutschland, sondern u.a. auch in den USA, in Frankreich oder Großbritannien gelesen wurden. Konvolut enthält folgende Flugblätter mit jeweils eingelegtem englischsprachigem Blatt mit Übersetzung: Nr. 21/22 (Frankreichs Kriegsschuld / France responsible for the war), 71/72 (Hat Deutschland den Krieg verschuldet? / Did germany provoke the war?), 451/452 (Wie steht es mit der versprochenen Abrüstung dert andern? / The undiable legality of Germany’s claim, that the other powers, too, should disarm), 551/552 (Hitlers Aufruf gegen den Versailler Wahnsinn / Hitlers appeal against the madness of Versailles), 601/602 (Frankreich bedroht Deutschlands Sicherheit / France – a menace to Germany’s safety), 601/602 (Dublette); 631/632 (Hitlers Kampf um Ehre und Freiheit / Hitler’s fight for his country’s honour and freedom); 691/692 (Aufruf an die Juristen der Welt zur Saarfrage / A manifesto on the Saar problem addressed to jurists throughout the world); 711/712 (Eine Verschwörung des Krieges / A conspiracy of war), 871/872 (An den Poilu von Verdun / To the poilu of Verdun).       - 30 x 40 cm, 12 x 23 cm, Papier min gebräunt, ein kleiner Stockfleck, sonst tadell. Vom Künstler signiert: «August Alois Walla.?»- August Walla (1936-2001) wuchs als Einzelkind bei seiner Mutter und Großmutter auf. Bis zu seinem neunten Lebensjahr zeigte er eine normale Entwicklung. Er kam in die Sonderschule. Danach konnte kein Lehr- oder Arbeitsplatz für ihn gefunden werden. Mit 16 Jahren kam er erstmals in stationäre psychiatrische Behandlung, in der er bis zu seinem 20. Jahr verblieb. 16 Jahre später, als seine Mutter erkrankte, kam er wieder in die Psychiatrie.Walla arbeitete bereits sehr früh künstlerisch ? als Zeichner, Maler und Photograph. In seiner Kunst vereinnahmte er seine Umgebung, indem er auf Gegenständen (auch an Häusern oder Bäumen) erfundene und existierende Symbole, sowie götterähnliche Wesen malte. Figuren und Symbole finden sich in allen seinen Werken. Er schuf damit einen abgeschlossenen künstlerischen Kosmos. August Walla lebte seit 1983 im Haus der Künstler in Maria Gugging und war einer der vielseitigsten Künstler der sogenannten Art Brut.Die renommierte deutsche Punkband EA80 bezieht sich im Stück Gugging ihres 1992 erschienenen Albums "Schauspiele" auf Wallas Schaffen. 600 gr.
