Interesting holographic exchange between Zionist Dr. Arthur Ruppin and Moshe Sharrett on publishing statistics on Jewish immigration in 1935

no place: , July 2, 1935. no place, July 2, 1935. 4to. "Interesting holographic exchange between Zionist Dr. Arthur Ruppin and Moshe Sharrett (later Prime Minister of Israel), one page, 4to, July 2, 1935, in Hebrew by both. Ruppin writes Sharrett: ""H. Carmelli made the statistics enclosed here, and asked me if the Jewish Agency is not objecting to publish it from political reasons. I would be much obliged if you express your opinion in the matter."" Sharrett responds on the lower half of the same page ""I don't see any political damage in publishing the conclusions by a private person without the stamp of the Agency or of the German Dep[artment]. But I do see the chance of damage to the truth in publishing the conclusions regarding the immigration from Horan, that…are…given in generalization and vagueness, without accuracy in the term 'Horan' and without clarification of what is seasonal immigration of workers and what is settlement…"" He has signed with initials ""M.S."". Fine. Arthur Ruppin (1876-1943) was a Zionist thinker and leader. He was also one of the founders of the city of Tel Aviv, and a pioneering sociologist credited as being ""The Father Of Jewish Sociology"", directing Berlin's Bureau for Jewish Statistics and Demography from 1902 to 1907. In 1926, Ruppin joined the faculty of Hebrew University in Jerusalem and founded the sociology department. A building there is now named in his honor. His most celebrated sociological work is ""The Jews In The Modern World"" (1934). Moshe Sharett (born Moshe Shertok) born on October 15, 1894, died July 7, 1965 was the second Prime Minister of Israel (1954-1955), serving for a little under two years between David Ben-Gurion's two terms. Born in Kherson, Ukraine, which was then part of the Russian Empire, Moshe Sharett emigrated to Palestine in 1908. His family was one of the founders of Tel Aviv. He was a member of the first graduating class of the Herzliya Hebrew High School. He also studied in Ottoman Istanbul and attended the London School of Economics."

H.M.S. Suffolk : third commission on the China Station 1933-1935

Cover title: H.M.S. Suffolk "Nous maintiendrons". Hong Kong : privately printed, [1935]. Royal octavo, blue faux leather, upper board and spine lettered in gilt, illustrated title page, 164 pp, with many photographic illustrations and sketches, maps, a near fine copy. Scarce. A record of the Royal Navy cruiser H.M.S. Suffolk's third commission on the China Station. The author, R.G. Howard, was Instructor Lieutenant-Commander on the Suffolk. "This book is the outcome of a request to keep a record of the Third Commission of H.M.S. Suffolk. In jotting down these events in the form of a narrative the writer is endebted to those who kindly came forward with cartoons, photograves and verse, and it is his hope that the volumes may be of interest to all who sailed he seas in the "Suffolk" during the years 1933-35." During her time in the Far East, the Suffolk visited numerous ports including Hong Kong, Singapore, Shanghai, Nanking, Nankow, Tsingtao, Nagasaki, Kobe, Penang, Bali and Darwin. Due to the civil unrest in China at this time, the Chinese and British governments reached an agreement to secretly remove a great number of China's art treasures to Britain. H.M.S.Suffolkwas entrusted with this secret mission in 1935, as no insurance company would accept the commercial risk. She carried what was probably the richest cargo in history, her magazines crammed with priceless artefacts from the Forbidden City. OCLC records only three copies (National Maritime Museum, Greenwich; National Library of Australia; University of Hong Kong).

[Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Octavo, pp. [i-vi] vii [viii] ix-xi [xii] [1-2] 3-689 [690-692: blank] [note: last leaf is a blank], original decorated black cloth, front and spine panels stamped in white. An omnibus volume collecting nineteen stories, several appearing here for the first time in book form, by a master of the English ghost story. Onions is best known for his supernatural fiction and "is regarded by many as one of the twentieth century masters of the genre ... [his ghost stories] are notable for their depth of psychological insight, elegant writing and sophisticated plots ... 'The Beckoning Fair One' (1911) is regarded by many as one of the greatest English tales of the supernatural but has overshadowed Onions' other work in the genre which some consider of equal, if not greater, importance. In fact, the majority of the author's supernatural fiction is of an extremely high standard and is notable for its originality, subtlety and careful characterizations which lift it well above the average ... Although Onions' ghost fiction is traditional in form, he concentrates more fully than his contemporaries upon his characters' inner feelings and physical reaction when faced with the seemingly inexplicable. A common theme is the gradual breakdown of an individual's personality following the realization that the supernatural is not confined to the haunted castles of the past but flourishes in the contemporary everyday world. Interestingly, Onions was a great pragmatist and did not believe in ghosts or occult agencies of any sort. It is therefore testament to his writing skills that he so convincingly conveys supernatural atmosphere and events." - Wilson, Shadows in the Attic, p. 398.         1935 New York Yankees contract for Clifford Melton signed by Hall of Famer Will Harridge and HOFer Ed Barrow who has signed owner Jacob Ruppert's name, not his own.

[New York], April 4, 1935. 8.5" X 11". "Partly Printed Document Signed "Clifford G. Melton / Black Mountain, N.C." [New York], April 2, 1935, four pages, 8.5" x 11", on two conjoined sheets, front and verso. Completed by typewriter and manuscript. Signed on filing portion "William Harridge" as American League President and above Brown's signature "Jacob Ruppert" by Edward Barrow, Yankees Business Manager. Fine condition. Will Harridge (1883-1971), A.L. President from 1931-1958, was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1972. Edward Barrow (1868-1953), was inducted into the Baseball HOF in 1953. As Business Manager from 1920-1945, Barrow's Yankees won 14 American League pennants and 10 World Series.Southpaw Cliff Melton (1912-1986) signed this $2,400 New York Yankees contract for 1935 but he never played for the Yankees. He spent 1935 compiling a 10-16 record for Yankee farm teams in Binghamton, Newark, and Baltimore. In 1936, Melton went 20-16 for the International League Baltimore Orioles and was purchased by the New York Giants where he made his major league debut in 1937. With fellow southpaw Carl Hubbell (22-8), rookie Cliff Melton (20-9) led the Giants to the 1937 World Series against the team that had signed him two years earlier. In Game 5, Joe DiMaggio hit his first-ever post-season home run off Melton as the Yankees won the 1937 World Series 4 games to 1.From BaseballLibrary.com about Cliff Melton: "Friends dubbed the guitar-playing balladeer from the hills of North Carolina 'Mountain Music.' Others taunted the gentle, 6'5"" giant because of his large, floppy ears [he was also nicknamed "Mickey Mouse"]. He blew a chance with the Yankees when he couldn't ignore the Cubs' Gabby Hartnett's needling during an exhibition game. After Melton was returned to Baltimore, GM Jack Ogden gave him a bonus every time he went after his tormentors. Twice, the huge lefthander charged into enemy dugouts.""

Calls, Sounds and Merchandise of the Peking Street Peddlers

1935. First Edition . CONSTANT, Samuel Victor. Calls, Sounds and Merchandise of the Peking Street Peddlers. [Peking: Camel Bell, circa 1935]. Oblong octavo, original side-stitched silk cloth, orange paper cover label, mottled endpapers, French-folded leaves. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $4500.First edition of this unusual documentation of Peking street-vendors, their instruments and their calls, illustrated with 61 color-printed lithographs, mounted paper cut-out and 16 mounted halftone photographs. In China, a system of peddling grew up to bring goods to them, each peddler announcing his presence by a distinctive call. In partial fulfillment for the degree of Master of Arts from the California College in China, Samuel Constant documented these peddlers' calls and the callers themselves. ""Some call out their wares in a musical voice or song calculated to please the hearer. Others have a loud or discordant cry which grates on the nerves as though the devil himself had something to sell."" The color-printed lithographs are all two-paneled with the image of the peddler in one and either the musical instrument he used to accompany his call or the wares he sold in the other. The halftone photographs depict actual street-scenes and peddler ""performances."" Early issue, with original imprint inked over and ""The Peking Bookshop / Grand Hotel des Wagons Lits / Peking"" printed in ink on title page, and with Peking Bookshop label on rear pastedown. Occasional light foxing, fragile original boards with only light wear to edges. A near-fine copy.

        Les forest de Cochinchine [Vietnam].

Vietnam, Duyen Ng, 1935. Oblong photo album (24.5 x 34.0 x 2.5 cm) with 29 mounted b/w photographs (each ca. 22.5 x 16.5 cm). Cloth-covered boards with gilt lines and gilt-titled morocco label mounted on the front board.l The photographs show rivers and tropical lowland forests, as well as villages -with large trees- and people in "Cochinchine"; probably most, if not all, from the extreme south of Vietnam (one building bears a sign with "Nam.Can.Ouest", which is currently situated in the Vietnamese province of Bac Lieu). The album deals principly with the lumber trade: on several photo versos, there are handwritten descriptions of the trees, with their local and Latin name, as well as the exact locality. Each is captioned "Service Forestier de Cochinchine", and numbered. Other photos deal with fishing, or show the wider environments. Several photographs are signed "Ng-Duyen". Duyen Ng is a common name in this area and could not be traced to a particular photographer. On the versos, there are handwritten notes about the place where each of the photographs was taken. Above the first photograph, someone has written in pencil "Album executé en 1935 quand j'étais garde de la Cochinchine". Garde is the French word for guard, but here it means forester. Some photos lightly toned, but generally in a very good condition. A very nice, unique item.
