Collection of 1 autograph manuscript signed ("Beatrix Potter") and 1 autograph letter signed ("H.B. Heelis"). Together with: The Peter Rabbit Music Books. Book I. Six Easy Pieces for Pianoforte by Christopher Le Fleming.

London, J. & W. Chester, Frederick Warne & Co., 1935. - 17, (3) pp. Publisher's original full-colour illustrated wrappers; a line drawing by Potter at the head of each song. ALS: Castle Cottage, Sawry, Ambleside, 18 Aug. 1935. Large 4to. 1 p. AMsS: n. p., [December 1935]. 8vo. 1 p. Charming archive documenting this slim volume of music and the final stage of an extraordinary career. Beatrix Potter was 69 years old when she undertook this joint project, for which Le Fleming composed the music and she herself contributed illustrations and a brief foreword. The original manuscript of the latter, containing several autograph corrections, is preserved here: "The rippling melody of this pretty music calls back many little friends. Again the Puddle-Ducks pass: pit pat paddle pat; white kittens, squirrels, rabbits, frisk and gambol. Tiddly widdly widdly! Mrs. Tittlemouse with a mop follows the big dirty footprints of Mr. Jackson. And Lucie sips her tea, while dear Mrs. Tiggy heats her smoothing iron. Good luck to the merry company of Christopher Le Fleming's tuneful numbers, and to those luckly little People who will learn to play them some day! [.]". Also included is an unpublished letter by Potter to the composer, in which she complains of tremors in her hand: "I too have been away for a very brief holiday and more than ever busy since coming home - I sent 2 or 3 samples to Messrs Warne as I am not sure about size and style of drawing for lithography - I have not had a reply - it is just as likely that Mr. Stephens [Arthur L., Managing Director of Warne] is away from London. I shall go on in the mean time drawing when ever I can. I am quite keen on the work and do not reject it - but my hand does shake [.] I had nice kittens from Elizabeth + her mother. You shall have the drawings to look at". Some weeks later, on 13 September, Potter wrote to Le Fleming: "I have been very long over [the drawings] - doing them at odd times in a busy season of the year. Some are better or worse than others. The frog and the nut-cracking squirrel are my own favorites, and Jemima with Mr. Tod. The ducks are least satisfactory - I am having another try at Pit Pat Puddle. The tune still hums" (Linder). Curiously, Potter thought the music beyond the ability of youngsters. She wrote to a friend, "I am sending you Christopher Le Fleming's music. It was very charming when he played it but I think it is too difficult for children." - Holograph Potter manuscripts are of exceptional rarity. Quimby, Appendix IV, C7. Cf.         Japanese Color Plate Propaganda Album

1935 - Bright, vivid and fantastical illustrations from Japanese folklore, Samurai legend, martial and equine traditions, and other patriotic-tinged stories. Showa 10, or 1935. Oblong, 18 by 38 cm. 60 color plates, with text captions generally in a narrow column on one side. The imagery jumps off the page, with not a few of the illustrations having the illusion of real dimensionality. The color adds to the electricity of the scenes depicted. A few of the plates have crayon scribbles or writing. The cloth on the boards is heavily soiled, and the string tie binding has some looseness, as might be expected from the extreme oblong shape. Fabric mostly perished on the spine. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

        Cupid's Pastime.

      - 13 original copper engravings, 2 of which are signed by the artist, including a complete set of the artist's proofs for the 6 plates used in the published book. The collection includes 4 printings of the frontispiece, 2 versions of which are unused. The collection includes several page proofs, comprising 3 of the full page engravings, 2 impressions of the tail piece on different paper and two more sheets without engravings. All the proofs have the stamp of the artist's studio on the verso. Printed by A.A.M. Stols for J.B.W. Editions. 1935. An unique collection, all the more desirable as the book itself only existed in an edtion of 31 copies. Buckland Wright wrote in the colophon that the book was "a private experiment in illustration and typography by the engraver of the plates, who offers no other excuse of this publication". These are delicately sensuous copper engravings of nude figures in Arcadian landscapes with an underlying gentle erotic theme. In his memoir, Anthony Reid wrote : These were the themes which he loved best and which he best portrayed. The plates have timeless beauty, an absolute serenity of line and loveliness'.         A Study of Tom Thomson. The Story of a Man Who Looked for Beauty and for Truth in the Wilderness

Toronto: Discus Press, 1935. Undetermined. very good. 131 out of 450 copies set by hand by the author and printed on Kelsey press. xxii, 133pp. Octavo. Green cloth covered boards with gilt lettering on spine. Text block is generally very clean and bright. Bottom and side outer edges untrimmed. A few B/W illustrations within. Four tipped in colour plate reproductions, including frontis. Slight crease to frontis page. A nice copy. very good Signed and numbered in black ink by the author in the limitation page. Canadian author Blowden Davies moved to Toronto in 1921 where she met with the GROUP of SEVEN, a group of artists renowned for their post-impressionist styled portrayals of Canadian landscapes. Her interest in Canada's artistic community grew leading to the authorship of this book. Davies' texts are well known for exploring Canadian social history. Blodwen Davies was a prolific writer, publishing works including: Storied Streets of Quebec (1927), Old Father Forest (1930), Daniel Du Lhut (1930), Ruffles and Rapiers (1930), Saguenay and Gaspe (1932), Romantic Quebec (1932), the Charm of Ottawa (1932), Youth, Marriage and the Family (1948), Quebec: Portrait of a Province (1952) and Ottawa: Portrait of a Capital (1954). The majority of Davies' work was historical, but in the years leading up to her death she developed an interest in folklore and mennonite history in Canada. It seems there are two varients of the book, the first has a limitation page of 100 copies and this example where the page has been reset with a limitation of 450 copies. There is no indication of why this was done as the books are identical. 1935

Emmy Göring. Portrait. Öl auf Holz montierter Leinwand in Holzrahmen.

(um 1935 - ). 34 x 22 cm. Signiert. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        La Leggenda di Amer

Milano: Edizioni S.A.D.E.L.. Hardcover. Paper pastedown on boards. . Near Fine. Scarce toy theater book, replete with five act juvenile play, stage and cut-out characters, props and sets -- the whole kit and kaboodle! No copies located on OCLC. N.d., circa 1935. Oblong, 24.5 by 35 cm. A juvenile pastoral play, characters include a butterfly, a squirrel, a turtle and a deer. The little boy, Amer, is desperate to find a cure for his mother who is ill, and he enlists the aid of the animals, who show themselves to be self-centered and useless. Only the deer has suggestions, such as bringing a red flower from a distant field, all of which are thwarted by the instigation of the other animals. Finally, as the third tip, the deer tells him he should sheer the hair off of a sleeping bear. But the den he is sent to turns out to be the turtle's home. In the last act the deer is transformed to a pretty girl, Alice, and we learn that Amer has brought about his mother's recovery by proving his mettle with tests of patience and bravery. Thus, it would seem the fairy tale story has a not so subtle moral that fit perfectly with Fascistic ideals. The page numbering is not entirely straightforward. It goes up to 66. 14 of these pages are actually unnumbered -- they constitute color backdrops or characters for the various scenes, and they are printed on card stock with perforations to allow easy cutting out of the book. Also four unnumbered leaves or pages at the end with instructions and/or tables. Also one folding stage, and in the back, a pocket meant for safekeeping of cut pieces. As the exact breakdown of the parts and pieces is open to debate, suffice it to say that we can assert that this copy is both complete and in entirely unused condition. The five act playlet is essentially a juvenile pastoral play. The only condition issue, and minor at that, are small tears of the paper pastedown by the rear joint, and perhaps other signs of light handling over the years.

Hint of a lean, few faint spots of loss to varnish and minor rubbing to spine gilt, else a Near Fine or better copy in Near Fine or better jacket, vibrant and bright with several short edge tears and nicks. A very sharp, unrestored copy of a title prone to fading and heavy wear. Bruccoli A4.1.a. O'Hara's third book (second novel), and easily among his best. "Set in the district of New York City covered by the Butterfield 8 telephone exchange, the story recounts the final days in Gloria Wandrous’s tragically short life in the late spring of 1930. . . . Flashbacks detail a history of pre-adolescent sexual abuse, liberal misuse of alcohol and far too many encounters with men. This time, Gloria desperately hopes, will be different. . . . O'Hara always claimed that his various protagonists were taken from the psychological profiles of real people, but here was a bone fide roman à clef, drawn from the diaries and tragic demise of one Starr Faithful, alleged to have had relationships with a number of prominent citizens, including former mayor Jimmie Walker."         I, Claudius : from the autobiography of Tiberius Claudius, born B.C. 10, murdered and deified A.D. 54; [with] Claudius the God and His Wife Messalina

New York: Harrison Smith and Robert Haas [through 1935], MCMXXXIV [1934]. First Printing. Hardcover. First American Editions (no additional printings noted) in First State bindings. Tall, thick 8vo's: 494, with with title page vignette and folding genealogical table of Tree of the Imperial Family and Connexions; 583,[1], with title page vignette and two folding genealogical tables, of the Royal Family of the Herods and of the Tree of the Imperial Family. Publisher's navy blue cloth, spines stamped in gilt, medallions stamped in blind (I, Claudius) and gilt (Claudius the God) on upper covers; pictorial dust jackets, I, Claudius priced $3.00 with "recommended by the Book-of-the-Month Club" decal on upper cover, Claudius the God unpriced and unclipped. (Speculation abounds as to whether this is actually the book-club issue, but aside from the unpriced jacket it is otherwise identical to the first trade edition. What's more, the jacket's back panel contains a list of 40 Smith and Hass titles, all priced, highly unusual for any book-club edition.) An uncommonly bright set, about Fine (evidence of neat, partial book plate removal from upper paste down of Claudius the God), in better than Near Fine jackets without tears or chips but spine panels faded (as inevitably). In 1934, Graves was awarded the James Tait Black Memorial Prize for both volumes. Higginson A42b and A43b. Graves's fictional autobiography of the Roman Emperor Claudius, using psychological realism in a story of political intrigue in first century Rome. Claudius the God and His Wife Messalina soon followed, and the publication of these books brought Graves international recognition and some financial stability. "Before Graves, this literary form was seldom other than a romance, contemporary to whatever age in which it was written and covered over with a thin veneer reminiscent of exotic climates and distant times and places. Graves, however, uses the form of the historical novel not to disguise the present but to explore and bring to light the past. . . . It is a measure of Graves’s talent and skill that he can make his evocation of the past seem real and vivid, even to those with a solid grounding in the history of the early Roman Empire."         Pylon

New York: Harrison Smith & Robert Haas, 1935. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine-/Fine-. First Printing (February, 1935, on copyright page), in First Issue dust jacket (with correct titles listed on rear panel). 8vo: 315,[1]pp. Publisher's cobalt-blue cloth, spine and upper cover stamped in gilt within a horizontal black band, top edge stained black; pictorial dust jacket, priced $2.50. About Fine (flaking to gilt spine lettering), in a bright, about Fine jacket (spine head rubbed with miniscule loss). Provenance: from the collection (now housed at the University of Central Florida Libraries) of bibliophiles Walter and Dorothy Donnelly with their label on front paste down. Petersen A17.1a. Fargnoli, pp. 211-16. In the 1930s, Faulkner sought release from increasing personal and professional problems through flying lessons; he bought a plane, and his brothers also learned to fly. Eventually Faulkner gave the plane to his brother Dean—and was overcome by guilt when Dean died in a crash in the same year Faulkner published Pylon, which concerns the exploits of a wandering troupe of gypsy aviators. According to The Literary Encyclopedia, Pylon "has many failings, but did offer Faulkner a chance to try out some of the techniques he perfected in Absalom, Absalom!, which is widely considered his greatest achievement." In fact, Faulkner claims to have written Pylon to get away from writing Absalom (Fargnoli, p. 213). Fargnoli calls Pylon "Faulkner's most self-consciously modernist work" and points out the novel's references to both Joyce (in particular the Aeolis episode in Ulysses) and T. S. Eliot (the penultimate chapter of Pylon is entitled "Lovesong of J. Alfred Prufrock" and The Waste Land is evoked throughout). Basis for the 1958 film The Tarnished Angels, featuring Robert Stack, Rock Hudson and Dorothy Malone, about an airplane contest in New Orleans during Mardis Gras.
