Sixteen photographs of the 1933 attempt on Mount Waddington, annotated by Hall to the verso, and with two accompanying letters from Hall to Edward Lisle Strutt, 3 & 5 April, 1935.

      - 16 contact prints, each approx. 4 x 3” (11 x 8 cm), annotated in pencil to verso, in very good condition, accompanied by two letters on Hall’s headed paper, 1p. and 2pp., signed, one contained in original envelope (stamp torn away). Mount Waddington, the highest peak in the coastal range of British Columbia, was first viewed from Vancouver Island by Don and Phyllis Munday in 1922. In the late 1920s and 1930s, the Mundays, together with a changing party of other climbers, attempted to reach and climb the mountain, which they dubbed ‘Mystery Mountain’. In 1933, they approached it via Scimitar Creek and glacier. The party, which included Henry S. Hall, Donald Brown, and Alfred E. Roovers, made several reconnaissance climbs, attempted Mt. Geddes, and climbed Mt. Combatant (12,400ft), where they spent a night at the summit. These photographs relate to this 1933 attempt, and show various camps and views during the expedition. One photograph shows Phyllis Munday trekking across the Scimitar glacier with a “Seventy pound pack”. The photographs were amongst several sent by Hall to E. L. Strutt, previously a member of the 1922 Everest expedition and at that time editor of the Alpine Journal (he was later President of the Alpine Club). The letters inform him to expect about thirty photographs from which he might select for the Alpine Journal article. The article appeared as ‘Climbs in the Coast Range of British Columbia’ (AJ vol. 47, n. 251, p. 288), though Hall also informs Strutt that some of the images had previously been used for an article in the American Alpine Journal. Mount Waddington was finally climbed on 21 July, 1936, by Fritz Wiessner and Bill House.

The 39 Steps (UK still photograph from the 1935 film)

London: Gaumont, 1935. Vintage black-and-white single weight still photograph from the UK release of the 1935 film, a shot of stars Robert Donat and Madeleine Carroll in one of the film's less stressful moments.Hitchcock's adaptation of Buchan's novel proved, as usual, to be an improvement on the source material, adding two key female characters and removing a couple of serious plot implausibilities. Of nearly inestimable importance is that Hitchcock found in "The 39 Steps" a theme that would become his favorite, and one whose variations he would virtually exhaust: an innocent man on the run, clever and resourceful but surrounded by a conspiracy he doesn't understand.8 x 10 inches (20 x 25 cm). Near Fine with some light creasing to the corners.

"Finite Approximations to Lie Groups; The Extensions of a Group.""Princeton; Groningen": "University Press; Noordhoff", "1938; 1938".

"First edition, the extremely rare offprint issues, and with a fine provenance, of the two papers on group theory written by Turing at Princeton under the supervision of John Von Neumann.

Offprints of Turing's papers are extremely rare in institutional holdings, and even more so in commerce. We have located only two other copies of the first offprint and one of the second: a copy of each in the Turing Archive at King's College, Cambridge (AMT/B/13 and AMT/B/14), and a copy of the first in the Max Newman collection (now at Bletchley Park). As far as we are aware, the latter is the only other copy of either offprint to have appeared in commerce. Turing's undergraduate tutor at King's College, Cambridge was the group theorist Philip Hall; this probably explains why the first three of Turing's published papers were on group theory. His first paper "was a small and easily stated advance on a recent theorem of von Neumann's. The latter had defined two notions of 'left' and 'right' periodicity but had missed the fact that they are equivalent. Turing proved this, and it appeared as a two page paper in April 1935 ['Equivalence of left and right almost periodicity,' Journal of the London Mathematical Society, Vol. 10, 1935]. By coincidence von Neumann arrived on a sabbatical visit from Princeton that month and proceeded to lecture on the subject; it is from this time that the two must have been acquainted" (Welch, p. 3).

The next two years were spent working on his great paper on the 'Entscheidungsproblem,' including the introduction of the 'universal Turing machine'. The Entscheidungsproblem had been solved slightly earlier by Alonzo Church, and with both Church and von Neumann at Princeton it was natural for Turing to visit Princeton, which he did in 1937. Once there, and under von Neumann's direction, Turing attacked "a problem suggested by the emigré Polish mathematician S. Ulam: that of asking whether continuous groups could be approximated by finite groups, rather like approximating a sphere by polyhedra. Von Neumann had passed the problem to Alan, who successfully dealt with it by April, when it was submitted. This was fast work, although as he had shown that continuous groups could not in general be approximated in this way, it was a rather negative result" (Hodges, pp.129-130). The actual result proved by Turing is described by Max Newman as follows. "If a (connected) Lie group L can, for arbitrary ε > 0, be ε-approximated by a finite group whose multiplication law is an ε-approximation to that of L, in the sense that the two products of any two elements are within e of each other, then L must be both compact and abelian" (Newman, p. 258).

The second offered paper "concerns the problem of determining the extensions of a given group G by a given group H inducing given classes of automorphisms" (Welch, p. 10).". "Two offprints: 'Finite approximations to Lie groups,' from Annals of Mathematics, Vol. 39, No. 1, January, 1938, pp. 105-111; 'The extensions of a group,' from Compositio Mathematica, Vol. 5, Fasc. 3. Groningen: P. Noordhoff, 1938, pp. 357-367. Both offprints in original printed wrappers (the first with some occasional pencil marginalia, probably by Gandy). Fine condition. "

Map of Mexico City and Valley.

Mexico. Frances Toor Studios. 1935. Color pictographic / pictorial street map, 19 3/4 x 25 inches on sheet size 20 1/2 x 26 inches, professionally mounted on linen. Light wear to folds, tears to mid right map now visible only on close examination. Brightly colored pictorial map designed by the Guatemalan artist Carlos Merida (1891-1984) showing a street plan of central Mexico City with pictographs of many buildings and a numbered "Business Directory" of 21 places in the cartouche, referencing numbers on the map. A note under the map states that "the motifs of the border consist of Aztec and colonial symbols of the names of suburban places." At the lower centre of the map is an inset map of the valley surrounding Mexico City. A wonderful example of the "translation" of the twentieth century decorative map that MacDonald Gill pioneered, here with a Hispanic sensibility.

Important Typed Letter Signed on White House stationery

Warm Springs, GA, 1935. unbound. 1 page, 8.75 x 7 inches, at Warm Springs, Georgia, November 23, 1935. Written to powerful New York attorney and chief opponent of Roosevelt's expansive view of Executive Power and New Deal legislation, Frederic R. Coudert, pertaining to FDR's updating of the Reciprocal Tariff Act of 1934, in full: "Many thanks for the nice note of yours. I really believe that this method of correcting tariff ills, piece by piece through Executive action, will work more fairly and more intelligently than the form of log-rolling, catch as catch can, general tariff law hitherto used." Knowing that he has greatly upset Coudert and other big business interests, the President continues with his trademark humor: "I suppose, however, that some of your New York friends and mine will set this down as another communistic decree of a Brain Trust-ruled Dictator!" Evidently Coudert did not see the humor in FDR's letter and developed such a disdain for the President that he would oppose all future legislation except for Lend Lease and military appropriation bills. Staple holes in the upper left corner; very good condition.
