THOMAS, Dylan.
London: The Sunday Referee and The Patron Bookshop, 1934. Octavo. Original black cloth, titles to spine gilt. With the dust jacket. Housed in a black morocco backed folding case. Faint spotting to free endpapers. An excellent copy in the jacket with some light spotting, minor nicks at the ends of the toned spine panel, and marks to the lower panel. First edition, first impression, presentation copy of Thomas's first book, inscribed by the poet on the front free endpaper, "To Nora from Dylan, March 1938". The recipient was Nora Summers (1892–1948), an artist and the lover of Yvonne Macnamara, Thomas's mother-in-law. Nora had studied at the Bristol School of Art and then the Slade in London, and married fellow artist Gerald Summers in 1912. In 1914 she became close to the family of painter Augustus John, and through him Yvonne and the Macnamara children, with whom she and Gerald lived communally for a few years. Yvonne and Nora's relationship was intense, and Caitlin later remembered Nora as "the father figure of our girlhood and an evil one", but the two fiery women did see eye-to-eye about art, with Caitlin acting as a model for Nora's burgeoning photographic hobby. Nora also enjoyed entertaining the young artistic friends of the Macnamaras, including Dylan Thomas, and she took a number of now-iconic photographs of the poet, including the image of Thomas smoking, and the photograph of the poet and his wife at Brown's Hotel in 1938. 18 poems was Thomas's first book, published in an edition of only 500 copies shortly after his 20th birthday, with 250 sets of sheets bound and … [Click Below for Full Description]

Fitzgerald, F. Scott
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1934. A sharp, Near Fine copy of Fitzgerald's great final novel. A light smudge on the front board and a small bookplate on the front paste-down, otherwise remarkably clean and fresh. Becoming increasingly scarce in this condition. Lacking the dust jacket. A meditation on marriage, success and the emotional toll mental health problems can take on a family. Many of these themes echo from Fitzgerald's personal troubles with his wife, Zelda, later in life. Printed in a relatively small print run, so attractive copies are uncommon. Near Fine. Near Fine

, 1934. 1934. Near Fine. Oblong small quarto. Rawhide-tied hand painted limp suede wrappers. Album of 76 gelatin silver images. Various sizes. Album is near fine, images are mostly near fine or better, a few taped in with some offsetting or staining. Autographs pages precede the images and include several names, addresses, and comments, all dated in 1934. The first half of the images are of an American soldier stationed in the Philippines, and the images depict sailors and ships en route from the Panama Canal Zone (where Fort Sherman was located), with several images of visits to native villages and with several images of the indigenous people. The remaining half of the images follow the same soldier back to the Canal Zone, where he seems perhaps to have been a band member, and show images of soldiers in uniform, in baseball uniforms, hunting with shotguns, and one of an African-American sergeant in uniform fishing on a riverbank with a small child, and then ends with several homefront images: family, hunting, a crashed car, etc. A modest but engaging album in the period between the two World Wars.

YEATS, W. B.
Riversdale, Willbrook, Rathfarnham, Dublin: , 26 September [1934]. Single leaf with Riversdale letterhead, autograph letter signed to recto only. Framed (370 x 320 mm). Usual folds, excellent condition. A fascinating letter written by Yeats to his friend William Force Stead (1884-1967), expounding the symbolic meanings in the ring that Yeats had had made for him by Edmund Dulac. Stead was an American-born poet, literary scholar, and Anglican clergyman, who studied at Oxford and then became chaplain and fellow at Worcester College from 1926 to 1933, when he was forced to resign due to his conversion to Catholicism. He was a friend of C. S. Lewis, Edmund Blunden, and of T. S. Eliot whom he baptised into the Anglican faith in 1927. He was later responsible for discovering the manuscript of the insane Christian poet Christopher Smart's Jubilate Agno, published in 1939 as Rejoice in the Lamb: A Song from Bedlam, and thus for bringing the antics of Smart's cat Jeoffry to the attention of the world. When Yeats was living in Oxford in 1920, and deeply involved in the occult investigations that would culminate in A Vision (1925), Stead introduced himself by sending him a copy of his latest book of poems. He was invited to come and visit, and remembering their first meeting in a later talk entitled "Oxford Poets", in which he mentioned his anticipation that "since boyhood I had thought of him as the Magician Merlin harping in the Forest of Brocéliande". He was likely not disappointed, discovering Yeats in the company of his wife, a Hindu priest with "a long flowing orange coloured … [Click Below for Full Description]

Evola Julius
Hoepli. In-8° (230x155mm), pp. XII, 495, brossura editoriale con sovraccoperta stampata in bianco, in rosso e in nero con titolo stilizzato. Scheda editoriale conservata. [Click Below for Full Description]
