Moreau, Clément (Illustr.) u. Paul Ad[olf] Brenner
- 1929 folgten Heinrich Vogeler und Carl Meffert (d.i. [Click Below for Full Description]

F. Scott Fitzgerald
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1934. Advance | Review Copy. Very Good binding. Quite rare, advance or review copy of the First Edition. Brucolli A14,I.a and Supplement (1980) only a handful of copies: "One copy bound in wrappers made from the dust jacket has been located at ViU ... It may have been used as an advance or review copy. [The Supplement notes a couple of additional copies].The Scribners records indicate that 500 copies in wrappers were ordered; but since only one [three?] copy has been located, it seems doubtful that these copies were actually prepared." [Bruccoli, A,14.1.a] With corner loss to the top of the front panel affecting the "LD" in Fitzgerald, and the "S" in "is". With some "bleed" the verso of the front panel; and a bit of wrinkling and a light crease to the first blank leaf. There is a small stain to the leading edge of the textblock. Minor sunning to the spine. To call this uncommon would be an understatement. Very Good binding.

Dinesen, Isak
New York: Harrison Smith & Robert Haas, 1934. First American Edition. Hardcover. A near fine copy in a very good plus jacket with a few tiny nicks to extremities. The author's real name is the Danish Baroness Karen Blixen. A collection of stories set mostly in the nineteenth century, contains her tales "The Deluge at Norderney" and "The Supper at Elsinore". Author's first book published three years before her memoir 'Out of Africa." Half cream colored boards and red cloth spine and tips. Bold gilt lettering to spine, front cover illustration also bold. Top stain dark red. $2.50 flap price. After this book was rejected many times a small publisher took a chance, but there were conditions: the well-known novelist Dorothy Canfield Fisher must write an introduction, and the author was to receive no advance. Blixen gambled and took the offer. Then she won - for, much to the surprise of all, Seven Gothic Tales was chosen by the Book-of-the-Month Club, which was a guarantee of wide publicity and large sales.

??????, ????????? ?????????, ?????? ?????? ? ????. ?. ?. ?????? (????????) [PUSHKIN, Aleksandr Sergeevich, Sergey LIFAR' and Prof. M. L. GOFMAN (editors)].
Lifar, Paris, 1934. Quarto (27 x 21 cm). 78 incl. first blank, half-title, frontispiece and title, [2] pp., including facsimile letters in Russian and French, head- and tailpieces, loose ad leaf inserted; discrete stamp 'Printed in France' on title. Publisher's printed wrappers by Dobuzhinskiy; a bit soiled, fore-edge of upper cover slightly creased. Fine copy of this private production, from the very rare edition of 50 copies only, each one bearing the printed name of the recipient. Another issue, without names, was limited to 200 copies. This copy was made for Valerian Svetlov, actually V. Ivchenko, an active supporter of Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes, involved in the organisation of the first season in 1909. After having published some of the best works on Russian ballet, he died in January 1934 - that is ten months before the printing of the present work: a rare example of posthumous dedication! With an introduction by Lifar and with a facsimile of Pushkin's notebook that Lifar acquired from a dealer in Paris. The notebook contains a handwritten introduction to "Travel to Arzrum" with the first two pages crossed out and not subsequently included in Pushkin's publication of the novel in Sovremennik in 1836. The wrappers were designed by R. M. Dobuzhinskiy, son of Mstislav.

Devanny, Jean
The Macaulay Company. First American edition., New York, 1934. The author's first novel to be set in Australia, reputedly based on her experiences working as a maid on an isolated sheep station. The dustwrapper blurb has other ideas, '. an English girl, a writer in search of new experiences. She finds it . when she enters the Jerumba sheep station as a servant. For there she crashes against the antipathy of the vilest female character that any author has yet conceived - a walking exhibition of neurotic bestiality that is neither fantastic nor overdrawn.' The only edition. A spectacular copy. Fine in dustwrapper a little rubbed on the rear panel. [Attributes: Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

Ernst, Max

IACOVLEFF, Alexandre [Aleksandr YAKOVLEV].
Jules Meynel Paris, 1934. Folio (39 x 29 cm). Suite of 50 colour plates with "Croquis de route et notes de voyages" as a separate volume. Original card folder; some light soiling and spotting. Number 33 from the limited edition of 500 copies. Finely produced portfolio of illustrations by the official artist of the Citroen Central Asia Expedition, capturing the peoples and landscapes of Persia, Turkistan, Afghanistan and Mongolia. The third Citroen mission, The Yellow Cruise, took place between April 1931 and February 1932. This motorised expedition followed Citroen's previous successful mission across the Sahara and The Black Cruise in Central Africa. This time the route went across Asia from Beirut to Beijing, amounting to 13,000 km. It was the first time anyone had driven a car in the Himalayas and the convoy also set the world altitude record for cars - 4208m - in the process. Yakovlev produced a captivating record of the peoples he saw on the route, including Persians, Mongolians, Kyrghyzs and Afghans. By the artist's own admission, it was the interesting characters in traditional attire that he most enjoyed drawing, especially those with distinctive head-dresses. Yakovlev was particularly fascinated with the Baghdadi Kurds, a people whose proud and dignified air Yakovlev found very attractive: 'If I hadn't known that the Baghdadi Kurds who came to pose for me were just porters handling supplies for the expedition,' Yakovlev wrote, 'I could easily have mistaken them for descendants of the princes of One Thousand and One Nights' (A.Yakovlev, Putevye zapiski o puteshestvi … [Click Below for Full Description]
