ROSS, Betty.
Rich & Cowan, London., 1934. First edition. Octavo. pp xii, 300, 32 adverts. Introduction by R.D. Blumenfeld. Betty Ross was one of the first celebrity interviewers and in the 1920's travelled extensively in Asia, Europe, the Middle East and Russia in search of material for her syndicated columns and articles. This book not only recounts those experiences but also contains many of the interviews she conducted with artistic, literary and political figures, among them H.G. Wells, Marie Stopes, President Masaryk, the Marx Brothers, George Moore, Queen Marie of Yugoslavia, Gandhi, King Feisal, Josephine Baker, George Bernard Shaw, Jacob Epstein and others. There is also an account of the interview she failed to get with T.E. Lawrence. She was among the first journalists to conduct radio interviews, in a programme called “Peeps at Celebrities.”Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the title-page: "To Christine [sic] Foyle with happy memories of a pleasant meeting". On the same page are eight more signatures the most exciting of which is that of the "Last of the Red Hot Mamas", Sophie Tucker. Small tear in cloth at upper hinge. Spine and cover edges slightly faded. Very good indeed in very good, torn and frayed dustwrapper. Scarce.

(TRAVEL.) ADAMIC, Louis.
London: Victor Gollancz Ltd, 1934. London: Victor Gollancz Ltd,, 1934. An American Immigrant Visits Yugoslavia And Discovers His Old Country. With forty-two illustrations. Octavo. Original black cloth, spine lettered in gilt. With the dust jacket. 32 plates (42 illustrations in all). From the publisher's archive, though without marks. A touch of spotting to edges, an excellent copy in the somewhat nicked jacket with slight loss at foot of spine and a tear to the front joint at foot. First UK edition, first impression. Gollancz's unusual jacket combines the usual yellow with a larger black and white section printed sideways of praise for the American edition published earlier the same year by Harper and Brothers. Adamic's book was a bestseller directed against King Alexander's regime in the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. Shortly after publication of this book, on 9 October 1934, while on a state visit to France, Alexander was assassinated by a Macedonian gunman, one of the first assassinations captured on film.
