Drake, Francis; Drake, Katharine; [Earhart, Amelia]
Little, Brown & Co, Boston, 1934. First edition of this popular American aviation novel -- "hard-boiled in spots, racy in dialogue, speedy all the way" -- from the library of Amelia Earhart. The hero, short-fused maverick Dan Howard, works his way up from mechanic to pilot, secretly engineering a propeller with the potential to transform the aviation industry. In the novel's climax, told through the breathless patter of a radio announcer, Howard completes a round-trip solo transatlantic flight, flying from Newark to Croydon (where he eats a plate of English roast beef) and then directly back to Newark, a stunt made possible by his revolutionary propeller. In the crowd awaiting his return are "all the birdmen and ladybirds in the world," including "Lindbergh and Hawks and Doolittle and Amelia Earhart and Ruth Nichols and Byrd:" "I must say they all seem as surprised as we are, account of Howard's guarding his wunnerful secret the way he did until to-day." This copy of Big Flight belonged to "ladybird" Amelia Earhart, the first woman to complete a one-way solo transatlantic flight, which she accomplished in fifteen hours in 1932. In 1936, the American Dick Merrill would pilot a round-trip transatlantic flight, but with a layover of a week in England (rather than a meal). The dawn-to-dusk circuit described in Big Flight remained firmly in the realm of fantasy in the 1930s, inviting speculation on Earhart's response to the novel's plot and to her role as awed spectator within it. A very good copy, with a great association. Single volume, measuring 7.5 x 5 inches: [6], 285, [1]. … [Click Below for Full Description]

FINK, EUGEN. - [TRANSFORMING PHENOMENOLOGY - INSCRIBED AND ANNOTATED BY HUSSERL]
Berlin, 1934. 8vo. Original printed wrappers. Front wrappers loose and wrappers a bit chipped at extremities. Otherwise very fine. Inscribed at front wrapper and with a 7 line marginal not to p. 15. Pp. 15-32. ¶ First edition, offprint, with presentation-inscription from Husserl ("Mit freundlichen Grüssen von E Husserl") and a 7-line marginal note in Husserl's hand, referring to Fink's "Die/ Phän. Philo-/ sophie/ Edm. Husserls". The present copy encapsules one of the most important periods in the history of phenomenology - the mid 1930'ies is a period of turmoil in the great phenomenologists life, a period in which Husserl transforms many of his basic ideas, and Fink, Husserl's assistant and the person closest to obeserving this transformation, is the primary witness to this historical change. Fink's works from the 30'ies on Husser's philosophy are pivotal to the understanding of the transformation of Husserl's thought - and thus the transformation of phenomenology in general. One can hardly imagine a more interesting association-copy caputing this period of phenomenological transformation. The important German philosopher Eugen Fink initially studied under Husserl in Freiburg, before he famously became his assistant. He counts as one of the most important representatives of phenomenological idealism and is famous for his definition of philosophical problems as "pre-questions" that lead, through ontological practice, to true philosophy. "Eugen Fink was Edmund Husserl's research assistant during the last decade of the renowned phenomenologist's life, a period in which Husser … [Click Below for Full Description]

Moscow: Academia, 1934. Condition: Fine. A lavish reproduction of this anonymous Russian epic poem, believed (as the academic canon now feels) to date back to the late 12th century. Beautifully illustrated by Ivan Golikov in a nod to the old "Palekh" style of painting, with 10 mounted color plates (all with their original tissue guards and decorative, chromolithographed borders) complementing the text. Elephant folio, 49 pgs., striking decorative endpapers. A bright, very-well preserved copy. Clean, tight and solidly VG+. A slight, minor amount of scuffing to the panels, otherwise sharp as could be. And internally bright and very clean, with no markings of any kind. Very impressive early 20th century tribute --in the old Russian-- to Medieval Russia and its rich, complex folklore.

F Scott Fitzgerald
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1934. Condition: Very Good binding. Quite rare, advance or review copy of the First Edition. Brucolli A14,I.a and Supplement (1980) only a handful of copies: "One copy bound in wrappers made from the dust jacket has been located at ViU. .. It may have been used as an advance or review copy. [The Supplement notes a couple of additional copies]. The Scribners records indicate that 500 copies in wrappers were ordered; but since only one [three?] copy has been located, it seems doubtful that these copies were actually prepared." [Bruccoli, A,14.1.a] With corner loss to the top of the front panel affecting the "LD" in Fitzgerald, and the "S" in "is". With some "bleed" the verso of the front panel; and a bit of wrinkling and a light crease to the first blank leaf. There is a small stain to the leading edge of the textblock. Minor sunning to the spine. To call this uncommon would be an understatement.
