Miletti, Vladimiro
Trieste, Edizioni dell'Alabarda (Tip. R. Fortuna), 1934, Rara edizione originale. Thomas (Tom) Albert Stone, OSA (1894-1978)
1934. An original and early oil on board by Canadian artist Tom Stone, OSA (1894-1978). It's a colorful painting depicting a remote landscape with two cabins next to a lake. It is signed lower left. The dimensions of the painting are 10 x 12 inches, and it is presented in a period frame. An inscription in pencil on the reverse side has been crossed out and then transcribed by, presumably, a subsequent owner. The transcription reads "Presented to [illegible] Spring 1934." The board also bears the artist's autograph verso in pencil and a price of $10.00 in ink. The impressionist style indicates an early work by the artist. It's a lovely example of Canadian school post- impressionism with visible brush strokes. His representational landscapes are more commonly found in the marketplace. The only condition issue is the lifting of a small patch of paint at the top edge, but it's stable and unobtrusive. Tom Stone was born in Herefordshire, England in 1894, and immigrated to Toronto in 1914. He studied art at the Vancouver School of Art and the Ontario College of Art in Toronto. In 1925 he won the Governor General's Award as that year's outstanding student at the OCA. Stone furthered his studies under Andre L'Hote in Paris, France and at the Academie Moderne in Paris. He became a member and director of the Ontario Society of Artists in the 1930's. In 1929 Stone had the first one-man show ever held in the Art Gallery of Toronto (now the Art Gallery of Ontario). Buyer will be asked to pay the actual cost of postage, and Canadian orders will be charged applicable taxes. [Attributes: S … [Click Below for Full Description]

Fermi, Enrico
Nicola Zanichelli Editore. First edition, 1934, octavo, blue cloth in dust jacket, book very good, small abrasion on spine near title, some tanning or age toning to contents, jacket fair to good, mainly complete, with shelfwear and some loss, particularly along spine, and splitting between spine and rear panel, but complete. Signed by distinguished CMU physicist Sergio de Benedetti in 1936. 303 pp. Light spine lean. A nice association copy. DeBenedetti was an Italian physicist from the Turin area and knew Fermi and his family. DeBenedetti first worked at the laboratories of Joliot-Curie in Paris, but with the German invasion in 1940, he escaped Paris on his bicycle, making it to Portuglar after many adventures, where he secured a Visa to go to the US partially through the sponsorship of Nobel laureates Enrico Fermi and Arthur Holly Compton. DeBenedetti first worked at the Dayton Project (an arm of the larger Manhattan Project tasked with providing polonium and working on the trigger for the Bomb) and then landed a job teaching at Carnegie Tech. Fermi's book is rare on the market, especially with a dust jacket and with a personal connection. He won the Nobel in 1938, stopping over in Stockholm to pick up the prize before heading across the Atlantic. Very Good / fair. [Attributes: First Edition; In Dust Jacket]

(ST DOMINIC'S PRESS). PEPLER, H. D. C.
Ditchling Common, Sussex, Eng: Printed by H. D. C. and Mark Pepler [at St Dominic's Press], 1934. No. 225 OF 250 COPIES SIGNED by the printer. In this essay, printer and social reformer Hilary Pepler argues for the merits of hand printing over the machine press, citing examples from his nearly 20 years of operating St Dominic's Press, which he founded on 14 January 1916 at Ditchling in Sussex. Although originally inspired by his former Hammersmith neighbors Cobden-Sanderson and Emery Walker, Pepler (1878-1951) never embraced the Doves Press' idealistic (and rather elitist) goal of producing The Book Beautiful--in fact, the first product of his press was a beer bottle label for a local public house (reproduced in facsimile here). He was a far more radical socialist than William Morris and his circle, and sought to make a living working with his hands, while encouraging and enabling others to do the same. Of his motives for establishing the press, he says, "There were books I wanted to print--books about crafts which machinery threatened with extinction. I felt that the Press, which had destroyed the kind of civilisation I loved, should be used to restore it, or at least help in preserving such records of it as came my way." Above all else, "he was a craftsman, with the craftsman's wholesome contempt for the more absurd fancies of those who would like to be thought artists." (Cave) With fellow Catholic covert Eric Gill, he founded the Guild of St Joseph and St Dominic to facilitate the collaboration of Catholic craftsmen. St Dominic's Press ended in 1936, when Pepler was vot … [Click Below for Full Description]

Eveyn Waugh
Farrar and Rinehart, NY, 1934. SIGNED BY WAUGH ON THE TITLE PAGE. The author has neatly signed his name just underneath his printed name on the title page. The light burnt-orange cloth of the spine is a trifle faded else the book is in fine condition with a dustjacket in very good condition. The jacket is whole and complete with the original $2.50 price but there is some paper loss at the spine ends of approx. 1/4-inch or less. The jacket has a one-inch closed tear at the top of the spine. A nicely signed first printing of the American edition of one of Waugh's best works. Stevens, Wallace
Hartford, CT: [January, 1934]. 1 page, with integral blank; with three corrections in holograph. 1 vols. 8vo. On "The Emperor of Ice Cream" A wonderful letter, in response to the query of one Anna Wirtz (included here), dated January 13, 1934, about one of Stevens' most famous poems: "May I take a little of your time to ask about your poem, 'The Emperor of Ice Cream,'...I am uncertain as to how to interpret the poem. Do you mean that so many things in life are ugly and disillusioning and that the only sure beauty is that of 'concupiscent curds' of ice cream? You speak of so many imperfect things and then place ice cream as ruler over all...." To which Stevens replies: "Some time ago I made up my mind not to explain poems, because the meaning of a poem is merely one part of it. Of course, I never meant that ice cream is, for good and all, the summum bonum. If the meaning of a poem is its essential chacteristic, people would be putting themselves to a lot of trouble about nothing to set the meaning in a poetic form. Very truly yours, Wallace Stevens" Provenance: the estate of J.D. McClatchy. Old folds, two tiny tape mounts to verso, but fine.
