London: Jarrolds, 1934. Very good or better in blue cloth boards, with the spine showing light toning.. Minor edge wear and rubbing to all boards, a 1/16 inch split to the headband at spine, previous owners rather intrusive bookplate to the front free endpaper, quarter sized indentation to top center of several pages at center of book(as depicted in images) but overall an entirely presentable, sturdy and appealing copy. McLaglen's inscription and signature on the title page. Lacking the dust jacket. Victor McLaglen. Express To Hollywood. London:Jarrolds, 1934. First edition. Inscribed/Signed by the author. McLaglan was of course an enduring presence in the films of John Ford and made an indelible, eternal impression in his Oscar-winning turn as Gypo Nolan in Ford's 'The Informer.' legendarily elusive title, but scarcer by the order of magnitude when signed. It is the autobiography of a Hollywood hard man and ex boxer, recalling his wildly adventurous career prior to entering the movies. McLaglen was born in turbulent Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England. His father, a bishop, moved the family to South Africa when McLaglen was a child. He left home at fourteen to join the army with the intention of fighting in the Second Boer War. However much to his chagrin, he was stationed at Windsor Castle and was later forced to leave the army when his true age was discovered. From 1904 - 1920 he was a boxer and in 1918 McLaglen won the Heavyweight Championship of the British Army. The Wikiman says of this elusive book: "His tale of the road, his odyssey from his native England through Canad … [Click Below for Full Description]

ROBINSON, William Heath (illustrator).
ROBINSON, William Heath (illustrator). "The Gadgets" [Six Picture Postcards of Heath Robinson's "Ideal Home"]. London; "Daily Mail" Ideal Home Exhibition. 1934.6 sepia-printed photographs (each 140 x 60mm) housed in the original printed presentation envelope showing a model house, as designed by William Heath Robinson for display at the Ideal Home Exhibition of 1934; the first image is a cross-section of the house and the others depict the Kitchen; the Dining Room; the Nursery; the Bedroom, and the Garden, with each room providing a wealth of inspiration for the inventor's crazy labour-saving gadgetry; very good condition throughout with some early ink notes about the exhibit on the reverse of each card; the envelope with slight wear and small repairs; an elusive, ephemeral item.Sole edition. Beare's study The Illustrations of W. Heath Robinson (1983) gives more information on the exhibit, lamenting that all that remained of it were a few newspaper reports and commenting that "it is rumoured that a set of postcards depicting The Gadgets was sold at the exhibition. It also seems likely that somewhere in a film archive there might be some newsreel footage showing Heath Robinson's creation in action." In his later book, to accompany the exhibition of W. Heath Robinson's work at Dulwich Picture Gallery in 2003, Beare refers to the existence of these postcards as more than just a rumour.#2103784

Miletti, Vladimiro
Trieste, Edizioni dell'Alabarda (Tip. R. Fortuna), 1934, Rara edizione originale. (dorso muto), pp. 36. Rara edizione originale. Thomas (Tom) Albert Stone, OSA (1894-1978)
1934. An original and early oil on board by Canadian artist Tom Stone, OSA (1894-1978). It's a colorful painting depicting a remote landscape with two cabins next to a lake. It is signed lower left. The dimensions of the painting are 10 x 12 inches, and it is presented in a period frame. An inscription in pencil on the reverse side has been crossed out and then transcribed by, presumably, a subsequent owner. The transcription reads "Presented to [illegible] Spring 1934." The board also bears the artist's autograph verso in pencil and a price of $10.00 in ink. The impressionist style indicates an early work by the artist. It's a lovely example of Canadian school post- impressionism with visible brush strokes. His representational landscapes are more commonly found in the marketplace. The only condition issue is the lifting of a small patch of paint at the top edge, but it's stable and unobtrusive. Tom Stone was born in Herefordshire, England in 1894, and immigrated to Toronto in 1914. He studied art at the Vancouver School of Art and the Ontario College of Art in Toronto. In 1925 he won the Governor General's Award as that year's outstanding student at the OCA. Stone furthered his studies under Andre L'Hote in Paris, France and at the Academie Moderne in Paris. He became a member and director of the Ontario Society of Artists in the 1930's. In 1929 Stone had the first one-man show ever held in the Art Gallery of Toronto (now the Art Gallery of Ontario). Buyer will be asked to pay the actual cost of postage, and Canadian orders will be charged applicable taxes. [Attributes: S … [Click Below for Full Description]

Fermi, Enrico
Nicola Zanichelli Editore. First edition, 1934, octavo, blue cloth in dust jacket, book very good, small abrasion on spine near title, some tanning or age toning to contents, jacket fair to good, mainly complete, with shelfwear and some loss, particularly along spine, and splitting between spine and rear panel, but complete. Signed by distinguished CMU physicist Sergio de Benedetti in 1936. 303 pp. Light spine lean. A nice association copy. DeBenedetti was an Italian physicist from the Turin area and knew Fermi and his family. DeBenedetti first worked at the laboratories of Joliot-Curie in Paris, but with the German invasion in 1940, he escaped Paris on his bicycle, making it to Portuglar after many adventures, where he secured a Visa to go to the US partially through the sponsorship of Nobel laureates Enrico Fermi and Arthur Holly Compton. DeBenedetti first worked at the Dayton Project (an arm of the larger Manhattan Project tasked with providing polonium and working on the trigger for the Bomb) and then landed a job teaching at Carnegie Tech. Fermi's book is rare on the market, especially with a dust jacket and with a personal connection. He won the Nobel in 1938, stopping over in Stockholm to pick up the prize before heading across the Atlantic. Very Good / fair. [Attributes: First Edition; In Dust Jacket]
