London, Boriswood, 1934. First Edition. First Impression. Hardback. Two [2] volumes, being an inscribed first edition and a proof copy. The first edition is inscribed from the author thus "To Margaret \ from \ Kay \ November 3rd 1934." The Margaret in question is the author's close friend Margaret Goldsmith. 1934. Condition: Very Good. Mises, Ludwig von. The Theory of Money and Credit. Translated by H.E. Batson. Jonathan Cape, 1934. First English language edition. VG/VG in rare original first edition, first issue price-clipped dust jacket with internal repair to spine and front panel. "An Austrian Classic." The Scotsman. Edinburgh 1935. Published when G.F. Knapp's thesis, that "money is whatever the State says it is" was all the rage [how times have changed-not] the academic world was not exactly bowled over by Mises' irrefutable demonstration that all recessions are the consequence of government interference - an unhappy, if avoidable, consequence of politicians' failure to comprehend that money is a market phenomenon whose price is determined by the ideas and subjective value-judgements of market participants. [ A pause while bitcoin fans declare: "I told you so."] Later, in "Monetary Stabilization and Cyclical Policy" Mises commented on the hostile reception initially given to his book: "When I presented the Circulation Credit Theory...in 'The Theory of Money and Credit,' I encountered ignorance and stubborn rejection everywhere, especially in Germany. The reviewer for Schmoller's Yearbook declared: 'The conclusions of the entire work are simply not discussable.' The reviewer for Conrad's Yearbook stated: 'Hypothetically, the author's arguments should not be described as completely wrong; they are at least coherent...' but his final judgment was 'to reject it anyhow!'" English language reviews were, on the whole, mixed - "...intellectual arrogance sometimes amounting to shee … [Click Below for Full Description]

F. Scott Fitzgerald
Charles Scribner's Sons, 1934. Advance | Review Copy. Quite rare, advance or review copy of the First Edition. Brucolli A14,I.a and Supplement (1980) only a handful of copies: "One copy bound in wrappers made from the dust jacket has been located at ViU ... It may have been used as an advance or review copy. [The Supplement notes a couple of additional copies]. The Scribners records indicate that 500 copies in wrappers were ordered; but since only one [three?] copy has been located, it seems doubtful that these copies were actually prepared." [Bruccoli, A,14.1.a] With corner loss to the top of the front panel affecting the "LD" in Fitzgerald, and the "S" in "is". With some "bleed" the verso of the front panel; and a bit of wrinkling and a light crease to the first blank leaf. There is a small stain to the leading edge of the textblock. Minor sunning to the spine. To call this uncommon would be an understatement. Very Good binding.

SMITH, Clark Ashton.
See Detailed Description Below. Everett, PA. Fantasy Publications, n.d. [1934]. First Edition. First Edition. Small octavo, publisher's original white wrappers titled in black on upper cover. [39] pp + [1] pp [ad for Marvel Tales]. CLARK ASHTON SMITH'S PERSONAL COPY, with about 14 corrections and 2 revisions in pencil and his signature in ink on the last page of his story. 500 copies printed, but only about half of these were ever bound. Of two known issues this is the state with two dots on a 22mm line (the other being three dots and 25mm). No priority has ever been assigned to the different issues but perhaps as this is Smith's copy it takes precedence. Crease in back cover, stained on front cover and margins of some pages; still, a sound, very good copy with no tears. Smith lived in a remote cabin in the Sierras with no electricity and with wood heat, the condition is as could be expected. Still, the best copy in the world, now housed in a beautiful white quarter-leather case designed & built by the noted bookbinder, Gray Parrot. Item #310822 ¶ Originally titled 'The White Sybil of Polarion', Smith had submitted the story to WEIRD TALES magazine in 1932 but it was rejected. When William Crawford, who published Lovecraft's THE SHADOW OVER INNSMOUTH under his Visionary Press imprint, solicited stories from Smith for his UNUSUAL STORIES magazine, Smith sent him THE WHITE SYBIL, which had been revised somewhat from the rejected manuscript. Crawford put this pamphlet together, pairing the Smith story up with Keller's MEN OF AVALON as he felt that both stories were too long fo … [Click Below for Full Description]

1934. An outstanding combination of Magic Squirrel treasures. This listing boasts two of the rarest in Magic Squirrel collectibles. Provenance: We acquired this collection from an individual whose grandparents lived next door to N. G. Grishina in the 1930's in South Pasadena, California, around the time the book was written. The artwork and book were gifted to the family and then passed down. Comes with the original hand-drawn and colored illustration, "Petrushka and Keera", created by the author. This beautiful and vibrant watercolor painting was used as both the cover art and frontispiece, the very heart of the book. The artwork is signed in ink at the bottom by the author "N. G. Girago-Grishina". The design measures 7" x 8.5", on matte board that measures 10" x 13". Some toning and soiling to the board around the painting with 4 small punctures, likely from tacks. The art itself remains bright and vivid, with the artists original line work and painting expertise on full display. "The Magic Squirrel" by N. G. Grishina. First edition, first printing. Published by Frederick A. Stokes Company, New York, 1934. 10 illustrations by the author. Measures 6" x 8.5", 142 pages. The spine has been restored by a professional bookbinder. Borges Jorge Luis
208 x 294 mm. One page. It is the original manuscript that in 1934 Borges sent to Sigfrido Radaelli director of the magazine Megafono, this text was published in #12 April of 1934 page 60. Borges responds to an absurd accusation of the magazine "Crisol" (Argentine publication of the first decades of the twentieth century, of absolute identification with Nazism) where he was denoted that he hid his Jewish ancestry. When the Nazis ascended in Germany, one of their Argentine followers, Enrique Osés, ran the newspaper Crisol in Buenos Aires. The newspaper El Pueblo published The Protocols of the Elders of Zion, and the so-called Civic region frightened the Jews, commanded by Lieutenant General Juan B. Molina-who was nothing less than the secretary of President José Félix Uriburu. The rhetorical violence of Molina prompted the weekly newspaper "Mundo Israelita" to request Argentine intellectuals to be issued. Borges did it on "Mundo Israelita" magazine, Buenos Aires, Year X, #481, August 27, 1932. ".Certain ungrateful Catholics - read people affiliated with the Church of Rome, which is an Israeli sect . - want to introduce into this square a dark doctrine, of confessed German origin . The enunciation of that gloomy rosary is enough for the alarmed Argentine can appreciate the seriousness of the plot . It is about - let's say the obscene word of anti-Semitism once and for all. Those who recommend their use often blame the Jews, all of them, for the crucifixion of Jesus. They forget that their own faith has declared that the cross operated our redemption. They forget that blaming … [Click Below for Full Description]

SEKKA, KAMISAKA :
1934. Size: 30.7 x 21.8 cm. The album contains 25 exquisite woodblock-printed illustrations by Sekka in the Neo-Rinpa style, each together with a classical poem. Bound in the traditional Japanese style with original decorated cloth covers, cotton ties, paper title label on upper cover, slight wear to extremities, some wormholes to spine and margin of upper cover. Housed in the original cloth folder, worn and lacking clasps. Kamisaka Sekka was one of Japan's leading artists and designers in the early 20th century, known as the father of the Neo-Rinpa style. Many of his works display a fusion of traditional Japanese and contemporary Western design concepts. This is Sekka's last work and it was created by him as a tribute to Hon'ami Kõetsu (1558-1637), the founder of the Rinpa school of painting, a Japanese genre based on nature which originated in the early 17th century, and developed into the Neo-Rinpa style in the early 20th century. Several of the poems have some offsetting from the prints, as is usual, but overall a fine copy. Ref.: Kamisaka Sekka: Dawn of modern Japanese Design, 2012. Ref. Hillier, Art of the Japanese book. Thomas Mann
Equinox. Published in New York City in 1934, this carefully preserved volume contains three stories by Thomas Mann that were not previously published in English. (The translator is not credited.) This is an edition of 1000 copies, of which this book is #260 SIGNED by Thomas Mann. The book is very clean, with only the expected discoloration around the edges of pages. The covers and spine are in fine shape. (See photos.) The bookseller from whom this was purchased in 1978 (by my late husband) handwrote details (as they do) in light pencil on the first page (see photo). See photos for the condition of the slipcase, which is worn and cracked at the top and bottom edges, including a 2-inch piece that has separated from the case (which I will send with the book). As thrilling as it is to hold this RARE book in my hand, I am not a collector as my husband was. Thus I will part with it for a fair price. Free fast insured shipping. [Attributes: First Edition]

[Photography]: [Natural Disasters]: [Railroads]
India: Bengal and North Western Railway Company, 1934. Condition: Very good +. Small 4to. album. Stamped leather label affixed to front board. Very good plus to near fine. 14 leaves, each with photographs and typewritten sheets mounted on rectos and versos. Contains 68 mounted photographs (21 of which are cyanotypes) with handwritten captions underneath; also includes one blueprint map mounted on inside rear cover. Complete. Pages show light rippling here and there; several show mild edgewear. Else clean and sharp. An English-language photographic record of the damages wreaked on India's Bengal and North Western Railway by the Nepal-Bihar earthquake of 1934, which remains one of the worst earthquakes in Indian history. As the album's introductory text puts it, "[o]f the 2,100 miles comprising the Bengal and North Western and Tirhur Railways, it may be said that on the 900 miles traversing North Behar and the eastern United Provinces, hardly a mile of track was undisturbed..." Not limited to photos of the track itself, the images show crumbling railroad stations, engine sheds, dwellings (bungalows), and factories adjacent to the railroad, all in various degrees of ruin. The album appears to have been produced for the Railway's own archives, and does not appear in OCLC. As the captions are handwritten, this album is more than likely the only example. An important record of this deadly disaster, which Gandhi famously interpreted as divine retribution for India's failure to abolish the untouchable (dalit) caste.
