Bud 2nd: A Collection of Literary Stories in Creative Writing [cover title]: Bud The Second 1934

[Chapel Hill]: Phillips Russell's Class. 1934. Quarto. Quarter canvas and blue card wrappers with title either hand-inked or dittoed on the front wrap. 40 mimeographed leaves printed rectos only. A trifle age-toned, else very near fine. Frontispiece portrait of Russell by Robert C. Ruark. Stories and poems by members of Phillips Russell's English class at the University of North Carolina. Russell seems to have infected his students with the hard-boiled style of the mid-1930s, and among the stories are included a very hard-boiled story by Ruark: "Ashes to Ashes" (first line: "Tommy's dead."), seemingly autobiographical, about a brilliant but pugnacious student who graduates Phi Beta Kappa from Duke, but runs off to the merchant marine and has bloodthirsty adventures, until he marries and has the (figurative) life sucked out of him by his wife. Ruark would have been 18 or 19 at the time of publication. Phillips Russell was an influential English and Journalism teacher at UNC, and published many books, mostly biographies and other non-fiction. Ruark excelled at both journalism and fiction, and is particularly well-known for his writing on Africa and hunting. This is certainly one of his first published works. OCLC locates a single run of this annual compilation (1933-1953), not surprisingly at the University of North Carolina. .

Londres, Nancy Cunard at Wishart & co, 15 février 1934 - 31,5 x 25,5 cm, 855 p., 385 ill. Quint, G. Michelet, G. Padmore, etc.

Vienna: Edition Die Galerie, 1934. First edition. Hardcover. Misonne. Oblong 4to., cloth-backed printed boards, preliminaries, and 24 photographic plates with tissue guards. Scattered foxing, primarily on the blank tissue guards. The boards are moderately dust soiled, else a near fine copy. Issued with a plain glassine dust jacket which is not included with this copy. This is number 859 of 1000 copies, SIGNED by the photographer. Text in French, German and English. The first monograph by this major Belgian Pictorialist. Born in provincial southern Belgium into a prosperous family, Misonne's first studies were in Greek, Latin and the humanities; he trained for a career in mining engineering which he never practiced. He made his first photograph in 1890 and by 1896 he devoted himself entirely to his art. A first wave Pictorialist, his mastery of the bromoil print and other highly manipulated processes ensured his prominence and place in the history of the Pictorialist school. Of all the Pictorialist photographers, none conveyed atmosphere better than Misonne. Bucolic landscapes were his dominant subject, yet his credo "Le sujet n'est rien, la lumière est tout" (The subject is nothing, light is everything) is what endures.

Elephant folio, 49 pgs., striking decorative endpapers. A bright, very-well preserved copy. Clean, tight and solidly VG+. A slight, minor amount of scuffing to the panels, otherwise sharp as could be. And internally bright and very clean, with no markings of any kind. Very impressive early 20th century tribute --in the old Russian-- to Medieval Russia and its rich, complex folklore.

      - Original souvenir program from the Italian National Fascist Militia Band's 1934 first American tour, one of the honorary patrons of which was the socialite and notoriously awful soprano Florence Foster Jenkins. Mussolini, smiling and waving, is pictured on the cover. The patrons of the tour are listed on p. 11, including Florence Foster Jenkins, Howard Chandler Christy, Edwin Franko Goldman, Henry Hadley and ten others. 12 pp. One vertical folding crease; overall in very good condition. 8.5 x 11 inches (21.6 x 28 cm).Florence Foster Jenkins, an American girl born in 1868 in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania to a well-to-do family, has become a legend as "the world's worst opera singer."  She made some vanity 78 rpm records for the Mel-o-tone label during World War Two, and in October 1944 hired Carnegie Hall for a recital.  The bad reviews that resulted from that recital were said to break her heart and she died a few weeks later at age 76, but the recordings have kept her name and her art alive.  In recent years there have been several plays about her, and this year there are three full-length movies.  The first, a French comedy-drama titled "Marguerite," was released earlier this year.  A second, produced in Britain and starring Meryl Streep as Jenkins, is being released in the USA in August, 2016, and later this year a German docu-drama starring soprano Joyce di Donato as Jenkins will premiere.  Two different full-length biographies of Jenkins have appeared within the last weeks in England, one by Darryl Bullock and the other by Jasper Rees. However, autograph material and other historical memorabilia of Jenkins is of the utmost rarity.
