The Postman Always Rings Twice

Alfred A. Knopf, New York 1934 - First edition. Boards are slightly soiled and near fine, with a supplied proof dustwrapper which came directly from the estate of the artist Arthur Hawkins, Jr. The jacket has been folded with a crease at the spine, Knopf's small Borzoi logo has been cut away from the rear panel (possibly for another design by Hawkins), and Hawkins has written the date "1933" on the front flap, although the book wasn't released until 1934. However the jacket is exceptionally bright and otherwise fine, and about 1/4" taller than the finished version, to which we have compared it (although otherwise identical to it). The jacket was unsigned by Hawkins, unlike most of his work, but is credited to him in Heller and Chwast's seminal study of jacket design, *Jackets Required* -- the survival of this proof in his estate seems to confirm their research. A milestone of hardboiled literature that was the basis for the classic 1946 film featuring Lana Turner and John Garfield (as well as at least three other versions). *Haycraft-Queen Cornerstone.* This proof jacket is likely unique. Good-bye, Mr. Chips (Goodbye)

Hodder & Stoughton, London 1934 - First English edition (preceded by the American edition, which did not have the Bip Pares illustrations). Two neat owner's names on the front fly (both prominent Englishmen), very slightly foxed, else fine in near fine dustwrapper with a little rubbing and a few tiny tears. Signed by Hilton. Basis for two films: the 1939 Sam Wood-directed version with Robert Donat (who beat out Clark Gable, Henry Fonda, and others for the Best Actor Oscar in what was probably Hollywood's best year ever), Greer Garson, and Paul Henreid, and the 1969 remake directed by Herbert Ross with Peter O'Toole, Petula Clark, and Michael Redgrave. A very nice copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Faust. Der Tragödie erster Teil.

N.p.: Mimeograph typescript, 1934. The successful German-Jewish banker Hans Arnold made his home in Berlin a salon for artists, musicians, and intellectuals (the structure now houses the American Academy in Berlin). As a patron of the arts, Arnold merited this hand-made gift, dedicated for Christmas 1934, of a Goethe's Faust, one of an unspecified (but certainly tiny) number of mimeographed copies printed on Crown Van Gelder watermarked paper and accompanied by an original drawing by the notable illustrator Michel Fingesten. The gift dedication is signed by Grete Scholz (d. 1937), wife of the painter Fritz-Karl Scholz-Wetterhof (d. 1945?). (Fingesten's ex-libris for Grete Scholz is extant.) Michel Fingesten (1884-1943), was a peripatetic artist known primarily for illustrated bookplates, who produced a rich body of work in the course of his agitated life. An Italian Jew, he was held in the concentration camp at Ferramonti for three years until its liberation in 1943. He died soon after a result of wounds sustained in a car accident. This volume is an artifact of the vibrant artistic and intellectual life that flourished in Germany and Mitteleurop at the cusp of Fascist domination in the 1930s. . 27 cm; [2], 169, [1], pages, dedication leaf, and original pencil and chalk title leaf with portrait of a grinning Mephistopheles, by Michel Fingesten (Michl Finkelstein), signed in pencil, protected by glassine leaf. Dedication "für HANS ARNOLD geschreiben, Weihnachten 1934," signed in ink by Grete Scholz. Text mimeographed typescript on Crown Van Gelder. Bound in half vellum over buckram cloth-covered boards, with buckram endleaves. Title stamped in gilt letters on vellum panel of top board. Upper board somewhat bowed, but book is effectively pristine.

Letter from Ardengo Soffici to Mino Maccari

1934 - L.A.S. addressed to Mino Maccari. Poggio a Caiano, April 28, 1934. 2 pp. front and back. (15x19 cm). Perfect condition. The roots of Arengo Soffici as a writer and poet are builded during the seven years of his stay in Paris, where he works as an illustrator on important magazines such as L'Assiette au Beurre. Here he has the opportunity to meet artists such as Guillaume Apollinaire, Pablo Picasso and Max Jacob, and attend the lively world around the La plume magazine. For the latter and for the 'Europe artiste magazine, he writes numerous articles. Also important are the meetings with Italian artists and writers, such as Giovanni Vailati, Emilio Notte, Mario Calderoni and Giovanni Papini, Giuseppe Prezzolini, with who he will make a strong friendship, despite the difference of personality. He was one of the principal collaborators of "Voce" and founded (in 1913) with Papini the interventionist magazine "Lacerba". He was also a collaborator of the Popolo d'Italia, and he was a committed fascist. He firstly worked as a critic of art, meant to demolish the avant-garde and to highlight some of the greatest personalities of French Impressionism and Post-Impressionism. Among the masters of Paris, Cézanne's teaching is for Soffici the most important and fruitful one, so as to be re-emerged from time to time in his best paintings. The object may be located and shipped from Italy, France or UK. L.A.S. indirizzata a Mino Maccari. Poggio a Caiano, 28 aprile 1934. 2 pp. fronte e retro. (15x19 cm). [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        [Photo Album]: Baltimore Family Travels

North Dakota: , 1934-1946. North Dakota. 1934-1946. Oblong small quarto. Measuring 8.5" x 12". Black textured cloth over stiff paper boards with "Photo Album" stamped in silver on the front board. Contains 147 black and white or sepia toned silver gelatin photographs measuring between 1.5" x 2" and 3" x 5", with captions. Very good album with chips, tears, and spotting on the front board with very good photographs with some edgewear.A photo album kept by the Chiodi family of Baltimore between 1934 and 1946. The photographs are not strictly in chronological order but show the family working, at their family home, and on vacation through the mid-1930s and early 1940s. The album begins with a trip to Jamestown, North Dakota, where they had lived before relocating to Baltimore, with photos of family friends on their front porch, children in their Sunday best, and workers on the Northern Pacific Railroad. Following this there are photos of a sheep ranch, a farm in Edmond, North Dakota, and Jamestown State Hospital. Friends and family are seen throughout the album in a variety of portraits, candids, and photo strips. They visited upstate New York and Niagara Falls, went camping and hiking, and enjoyed leisurely boating. As the war began the photos start showing more men in uniform including a Navy seaman and a man, Ernest Chiodi, in an Army uniform who is later mentioned in a newspaper clipping as dying in Germany in 1944. "A member of Company I 395th Infantry, 99th Division, 'Ernie' proved himself one of the highest caliber servicemen."A nice collection of family photos including travel and war related images. .

        The Pastimes of Aleck Maury

Charles Scribner's Sons, New York 1934 - First English edition, published in the U.S. as *Aleck Maury, Sportsman.*. Near fine in a soiled, good dustwrapper with several modest chips and tears. The author's most important and celebrated novel, about a Southerner who is both a scholar and a sportsman, based on the life of her father. As might be inferred from the subject, interest in the novel in England was bound to be minimal, and the first printing there was almost certainly miniscule. Exceptionally uncommon in the English edition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        TROPIC OF CANCER.

Paris:: Obelisk Press,. 1934.. First edition. One of only 1,000 copies printed. Miller's autobiographical novel -- banned in the U.S. and UK for decades after its publication -- has been described as "notorious for its candid sexuality" and responsible for the "free speech that we now take for granted in literature." The 1961 U.S. publication by Grove Press led to obscenity trials that tested American laws on pornography before it was finally declared "non-obscene" in 1964. Written between 1930 and 1934 during his "nomadic life" in Paris, Miller's TROPIC OF CANCER was titled as such because, by his own account, ". . . to me cancer symbolizes the disease of civilization, the endpoint of the wrong path, the necessity to change course radically, to start completely over from scratch." On many best-of lists, including Time Magazine's 100 best English-language novels from 1923 to 2005 and The Modern Library's list of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century, where it is ranked 50th. A near fine copy with light soiling and minute fraying to top of spine but remarkably with the yapped (over-hanging) covers barely frayed at all. Very scarce in this nice condition. Doctor Martino and other stories

New York: Harrison Smith & Robert Haas, 1934. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine-/Near Fine+. First Printing (same date on title and copyright pages). 8vo: [8],371,[1]pp. Publisher's navy blue cloth, spine and upper cover stamped in gilt, top edge stained yellow; typographic dust jacket designed by Arthur Hawkins, Jr. and priced $2.50. About Fine (barring collector's bookplate to front paste down and offsetting to pp 90-91 from publisher's postcard laid in), with bright gilt and crisp, clean pages; in much better than Near Fine jacket, spine panel tanned (as typical) and barely rubbed but lettering and design still vibrant. Petersen A16.1.b. Faulkner's second collection of short stories in uncommonly collectible condition. The title story, about the power of platonic love, first appeared in the November 1931 issue of Harper's. In fact, only two stories, "Black Magic" and "The Leg," are new. "Smoke" marks Faulkner's first foray into the detective story, in the tradition of Edgar Allan Poe and Conan Doyle, and a number of the stories, including "Beyond" and "The Leg" (about a haunting by an amputated limb) have supernatural elements. Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.g.

        Appointment in Samarra [First State]

New York: Harcourt, Brace, 1934. First Edition, as stated. Hardcover. Fine/Very Good. First Edition, so stated, with the publisher's errata slip tipped tipped in between the copyright and dedication pages, denoting the first state. 8vo: [6],302pp. Publisher's black cloth, spine lettered in gold, top edge stained yellow; second-state pictorial dust jacket (with reviews on back panel), correctly priced $2.50. Fine, square and tight (positively unread), pages immaculate; in a Very Good, completely unrestored jacket, marred chiefly by a v-shaped, one-inch loss to head of the spine, affecting the letters 'ntment' and 'rra;' otherwise clean and vibrant. The author's seminal first novel, easily his most desirable and scarcest work. Bruccoli A2.1.a. Modern Library 100, 22. Time 100. "O'Hara did for fictional Gibbsville, Pennsylvania, what Faulkner did for Yoknapatawpha County, Mississippi: surveyed its social life and drew its psychic outlines. But he did it in utterly worldly terms, without Faulkner's taste for mythic inference or the basso profundo of his prose. Julian English is a man who squanders what fate gave him. He lives on the right side of the tracks, with a country club membership and a wife who loves him. His decline and fall, over the course of just 72 hours around Christmas, is a matter of too much spending, too much liquor and a couple of reckless gestures. . . . That his calamity is petty and preventable only makes it more powerful." Dojmy z SSSR [Impressions of the USSR]

Brno: Exod, 1934. Second edition. Paperback. Very good. SIGNED. 165pp. Octavo [22.5 cm] in French wraps. Light edgewear to wraps; crease to spine; interior is unmarked. Illustrated with 15 woodcuts by the author, each protected by a laid-in sheet of glassine. Signed by Bochorakova-Dittrichova in pencil on limitation page and handnumbered 136 of an edition of 200 copies. An illustrated account of the author's travels to Leningrad, St. Petersburg, Moskow, Kharkiv, and Kiev. Bochorakova-Dittrichova also devotes a chapter each to a collective farm and the Dnieper Hydroelectric Station.Helena Bochorakova-Dittrichova (1894-1980) was the first female wordless novelist and the only woman to work in this medium during its heyday. She was born in the Moravian region of what is now the Czech Republic and spent most of her life in Brno, the Moravian capital. She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague and in 1923 received a government scholarship to study printmaking in Paris. Bochorakova-Dittrichova's unpublished wordless novel Malirka Na Cestach [The Artist on Her Journey] recounts this period in her life. In Paris, she first encountered the wordless novels of Flemish artist Frans Masereel, the originator of the form, and was inspired to create her own. Over the course of her long career, Bochorakova-Dittrichova published several wordless novels, along with travelogues and historical works. She also worked as a printmaker and illustrator, and was highly regarded in her native land, though largely unknown elsewhere. This changed in 2014, when the National Museum of Women in the Arts held an exhibition of her work entitled "The First Woman Graphic Novelist: Helena Bochorakova-Dittrichova," and this important artist finally began to gain global recognition. Her work, however, is still not widely available.
