Poems of the War and After.

London: Victor Gollancz Ltd,, 1934. Octavo. Original cream cloth, printed paper label to spine. With the dust jacket. Ownership inscription to front free endpaper. Light spotting to edges and endpapers, and very slightly within, but an excellent copy with the dust jacket only slightly chipped at he ends and corners and a little marked. First edition, first impression, a very scarce book in the rare dust jacket. Poems of the War and After was Brittain's second poetry collection, "published chiefly for those readers of Testament of Youth who have asked me where they can obtain my long-defunct little volume of Verses of a V.A.D. [1918], which went out of print soon after publication in the usual manner of experimental verse by immature writers. I have here included such poems from that small collection as seemed worth rescuing for the sake of their association with incidents related elsewhere, together with a few spasmodic efforts of more recent years.

Seven Gothic Tales [Out of Africa]

Putnam, London 1934 - The uncommon First British Edition of Isak Dinesen's first book. Thick 8vo: [6],522pp, with full-color frontispiece (repeating dust jacket design) by Rex Whistler. Publisher's cinnamon colored cloth, spine lettered in gilt; illustrated dust jacket, priced 7s / 6d. About Fine (spine ends bumped, top edge slightly dust soiled); about Fine jacket (spine panel lightly toned). A scarce survival. Blixen's first book, published first in the United States under the pseudonym Isak Dinesen. These intricate and imaginative tales, all set in the nineteenth century, won wide acclaim in America and soon appeared in this edition in Britain and then in Denmark (as Syv fantastiske fortællinger). "Since her pseudonym was quickly penetrated, she published under her own name in every country, except the United States, where 'Isak Dinesen' swiftly became a valuable brand. Among the main stylistic influences on Blixen's tales can be counted the English gothic novel, German Romanticism, Boccacio's Decameron, and The Arabian Nights. When asked why she set her tales over a hundred years in the past, Blixen responded that the past could be more easily recompounded in her imagination, and she would not be forced to resort to realism.         [YEAR OF 1932: THE END OF RUSSIAN AVANT-GARDE] Khudozhniki RSFSR za XV let (1917-1933): Zhivopis', skul'ptura, plakat, karrikatura, grafika. Katalog vystavki: Grafika [i.e. Artists of RSFSR for 15 years (1917-1933): Painting, Sculpture, Poster, Cartoon, Graphics. Exhibition Catalogue: Graphics]

Moscow: Vsekokhudozhnik, 1934. 80 pp., 47 pl. 18x15 cm. In original printed overlapped wrappers. Very good. A few pale stains on the spine, tears of the wrapper's extremities. One of 1000 copies. Rare. This is a catalogue of graphic art from the exhibition «Artists of the RSFSR for 15 years» which opened on June 27, 1933 in Moscow. It was shown a year earlier in Leningrad in the State Russian Museum featuring the best works of Soviet artists created during that period. In all, more than 3500 works were demonstrated in Moscow. The catalogue includes a fragment from A.S. Bubnov's speech (he was a secretary of the organizing committee), names of members of the committee, and a list of graphic works in alphabetical order by the artist and chronologically for each artist. 47 black and white plates include works by Altman, Lebedev, Filonov, Deineka, Kravchenko, Tyrsa, Pakhomov, Vereisky, Kustodiev, Favorsky and others. The Moscow Jubilee Exhibition included five sections, forming five independent, completely finished parallel exhibitions, united by a common chronological framework and unity of the design set. The sculpture section represented in Leningrad by a very meager and random set of works had to be rebuilt as an equal and integral sector for the Moscow exhibition. Also completely new in comparison with the Leningrad exhibition were sections of the Soviet poster with a caricature and theatrical and decorative art, sections perhaps the most remarkable in terms of exceptional creative brilliancy. The exhibition was planned as an important political event - demonstration of cultural evolution, growth and prosperity, the superiority to the decaying West. In fact it became a watershed separating avant-garde from the official Soviet art. Although the exhibition was opened with Malevich's work hanging at the entrance, the triumph of avant-gardists came to an end, the state made a bet on socialist realism. For the lack of understanding of the moment, the exhibition curator Nikolai Punin was fired, later arrested and sent to the GULag. Here are just some of the names of the exhibitors: A. Arkhipov, I. Grabar, A. Deineka, P. Konchalovsky, P. Korin, A. Kuprin, B. Kustodiev, A. Lentulov, I. Mashkov, K. Petrov-Vodkin, M. Saryan, V. Tatlin, A. Tyshler, P. Filonov, A. Shevchenko, D. Shterenberg, K. Yuon; N. Danko, I. Efimov, A. Matveev, V. Mukhina, M. Rukovishnikov, I. Shadr; V. Deni, G. Klutsis, V. Lebedev, V. Mayakovsky, D. Moore, Stenberg brothers, M. Cheremnykh, B. Efimov, Kukryniksy and many others. Every artist had a different life after this exhibition. For example, Filonov about whom Grabar' later said that he took «a special place at the exhibition by creating his intricate style of elements of cubism and calligraphy, flavored with a strong dose of homegrown philosophy» wasn't able to exhibit for several decades after that because official Soviet art society didn't recognize him as a legit artist.

        Logische Syntax der Sprache.

Wien, J. Springer. 1934 - XI + 1 + 274 + 2 S. Priv. Lwd. späterer Zeit, mit aufgezogener RTitelei. EA. - Schriften zur wissenschaftlichen Weltauffassung, Bd. 8. - R. leicht berieben, leichte Gbrsp.

Bonnie & Clyde "Wanted" poster issued two days before fatal Louisiana ambush

Washington, DC, May 21, 1934. 8" x 8". "Vintage 1934 double-sided "Wanted" poster of Bonnie Parker (1910-1934) and Clyde Barrow (1909-1934) designed to be distributed throughout the United States via mail service. Cream colored stock paper measuring 8" x 8" printed recto with photos, names, aliases, physical descriptions, and family members of Bonnie and Clyde. Integral address leaf verso left with "Division of Investigation, U.S. Department of Justice" return address and list of Special Agent addresses and telephone extensions verso right. In near fine condition with light overall toning and minor edge browning particularly to lower right corner. The "Wanted" poster, identification order no. 1227, was issued by J. Edgar Hoover, Director of the Division of Investigation, U.S. Department of Justice on May 21, 1934, just two days before Bonnie and Clyde were killed in a police ambush in Louisiana. The official charge was theft of a motor vehicle, although Bonnie and Clyde were "also wanted in connection with assault and [the] murder of officers". The stolen car precipitating this "Wanted" poster, a Ford V-8 coupe taken from Effingham, Illinois around September 1932, was like the one the couple were later killed in, the so-called "Death Car" perforated with over 150 rounds of bullets."Clyde Champion Barrow and Bonnie Parker constantly travel together and extreme caution must be exercised", the poster instructed. If there was any doubt as to Bonnie and Clyde's identities, they could be recognized by bullet and burn wound scars sustained during the pair's slew of assaults, kidnappings, robberies, prison breaks, and murders during the last two years. The couple was gunned down by a handful of Texas and Louisiana lawmen the morning of May 23, 1934. The posse had been tracking the Barrow gang since May 21st, the day this poster was issued.A sensational piece of crime memorabilia!"

        In a Province.

Leonard and Virginia Woolf at the Hogarth Press, London., 1934. First edition. Octavo. 350 pages. 1250 copies were printed, of which 300 were pulped. The author's rare first book. From the blurb: ''There are very few novels about South Africa which throw any light on the relations between the races. Here, however, is a first novel...which deals with a situation involving two individuals, one white and one black. It shows the breaking-up of two worlds, one pagan and one protestant, and hints at the possibility of some future reintegration. The author is a Dutch South African, whose father fought against the English in the Boer War. His insight and his sympathies would in any case be remarkable, but are most striking in one who was born and bred on the veld.'' Fore-edges of last few pages a little spotted, otherwise fine in the very scarce, very good indeed, slightly marked, dustwrapper, by Anthony Butts, which has a short tear and crease at the top edge of upper panel.

        The Way of All Flesh.

London: Collins,, 1934. Octavo. Original purple cloth, titles to spine and front cover in gilt, green and white patterned endpapers. Wood engravings to text by John Farleigh. Spine faded, rear hinge partly cracked but text block sound. A very good copy. Association copy, inscribed by A. A. Milne to his son Christopher on the title page, "For Moon, with love from Blue. Christmas 1940". At the time this copy was inscribed, Christopher, having completed his first year at Cambridge before deciding to join the Royal Engineers, was awaiting his call-up papers at the Milne's home in Cotchford (his parents had left London permanently earlier in 1940). He had been due to commence training in November 1940, but had failed the medical examination due to a mistake by the medical board; this was subsequently rectified, but he had to wait until the following February to join his battalion. Christopher was at this point still extremely close to his father, "and would remain so throughout the war, though for several years separated by many hundreds of miles". This book was of special significance to Milne, who considered The Way of All Flesh "the best novel in the English language"; it was first published in 1903, and this is a later edition. Milne explained his son's nickname in his autobiography: "One of us thought of Robin, the other of Christopher; names wasted on him who called himself Billy Moon as soon as he could talk, and has been Moon to his family and friends ever since" (Milne, It's Too Late Now). Christopher eventually outgrew the nickname "Billy", though his father continued to call him "Moon"; Milne was nicknamed "Blue" on account of his eyes, "the bluest eyes I have ever seen" recalled Nancy Spain.
