Brick-red cloth boards, gilt-stamped spine, top edge brown. Dime-size splash of fading to top edge stain, streak of light staining running down rear free endpaper, few flecks of foxing on endpapers and page edges, otherwise bright and fine.         Peiping.

Peiyang Press. (circa1934)., [Peiping]. - Coloured folding plan of Peking with original envelope. 60 x 50cm. A few neat repairs at folds, two panels evenly browned on reverse. A very good copy of a scarce pictorial plan with its envelope. This delightful and scarce pictorial map of Peking with landmarks and streets in romanised Chinese, with occasional Chinese characters, is surprisingly scarce. Although apparently issued in several editions in the 1920s and 30s, it appears relatively infrequently on the market. The divisions of the Legation District are indicated by their flags - this edition shows the German Legation by use of the black, white and red bands of the German flag. This flag which was no longer used after 1935 helps date this edition. Other landmarks and attractions shown included theatres, foreign shopping area adjacent to the legations quarter, Liu Li Chang Curio District, the racecourse, the many city gates etc.

Bud 2nd: A Collection of Literary Stories in Creative Writing [cover title]: Bud The Second 1934

Phillips Russell's Class, [Chapel Hill] 1934 - Quarto. Quarter canvas and blue card wrappers with title either hand-inked or dittoed on the front wrap. 40 mimeographed leaves printed rectos only. A trifle age-toned, else very near fine. Frontispiece portrait of Russell by Robert C. Ruark. Stories and poems by members of Phillips Russell's English class at the University of North Carolina. Russell seems to have infected his students with the hard-boiled style of the mid-1930s, and among the stories are included a very hard-boiled story by Ruark: "Ashes to Ashes" (first line: "Tommy's dead."), seemingly autobiographical, about a brilliant but pugnacious student who graduates Phi Beta Kappa from Duke, but runs off to the merchant marine and has bloodthirsty adventures, until he marries and has the (figurative) life sucked out of him by his wife. Ruark would have been 18 or 19 at the time of publication. Phillips Russell was an influential English and Journalism teacher at UNC, and published many books, mostly biographies and other non-fiction. Ruark excelled at both journalism and fiction, and is particularly well-known for his writing on Africa and hunting. This is certainly one of his first published works. *OCLC* locates a single run of this annual compilation (1933-1953), not surprisingly at the University of North Carolina. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        Everest 1933.

1934 - 3 folding maps, map and illustrations. First edition. Large 8vo., cloth. London, Hodder & Stoughton. Plate 2, 'Hugh Ruttledge', and plate 4, 'Frank Smythe', signed underneaththeir portraitphotograph. Ruttledge was the leader of the expedition, but at the age of 48 and with a gammy leg he was advised not to attempt the upper reaches of Everest. It was Smythe who came closest to succeeding, his ascent to 28,120 feet without supplementary oxygen standing as a record for many years. This was the expedition on which Irvine's ice axe was found, having lain there since Mallory and Irvine perished near the summit. Smythe claimed that from a distance he had seen a body near the summit, and guessed that it might be Mallory. Ownership inscription to the front free endpaper of Norah Perriam, who worked for the literary agents Christy and Moore, head of the spine torn clumsily repaired, some foxing.         [ONE OF THE NEW ERA TEXTBOOKS FOR YOUNG ARCHITECTS] Elementy arkhitekturno-prostranstvennoi kompozitsii [i.e. Elements of Architectural and Spatial Composition]

Moscow; Leningrad: Gosstroiizdat, 1934. 172 pp.: ill., 5 ill. 29,5x21,5 cm. In publisher's cloth with red lettering. General soiling, title page is toned, owner's signature on the front board and title page. First edition. One of 4000 copies. Illustrated throughout with numerous black and white drawings and photographs. The main subject of this textbook is a series of aspects of spatial composition in architecture. The author based this material on his own 10 year experience of teaching at Moscow architecture university first year students basics of composition (the discipline was called "Space"). First this discipline appeared in VKHUTEIN in 1923 'as a result of a long fight at the architecture department between different views on architectural method'. The author used materials from that discipline, 'the most valuable parts'. In general the book is dedicated to simply what resources and tools to use and how an architect can operate them. It became important not to lose touch with the reality, but also he stated "you can't design and build only based on studies of spatial composition (it becomes formalism), but you can't manage without it". This textbook does not renounce the experience and heritage of constructivism of the 1920s but he strongly against formalism in the future. This textbook laid grounds for future architects of 1930s and 1940s. The book is illustrated throughout, and the most impressive are combinations of old and new architecture on one page or a turn, like Parthenon frieze and The Dnieper Hydroelectric Station (designed by constructivist architects Viktor Vesnin and Nikolai Kolli), or Palazzo Valmarana and Le Corbusier's house, or The Admiralty building in St. Petersburg and The Derzhprom building in Kharkiv, or Novgorod cathedral and Konstantin Melnikov's club in Moscow. The book's application is also worth attention: it includes tasks for students and examples of their solutions (practical work for first year students of "Space" discipline at VKHUTEIN 1923-1933). The most interesting part are photographs of architectural models which are basically exemplary task solutions (see photos). Vladimir Fedorovich Krinsky (1890-1971) was one of the prominent representatives of the architectural rationalism (one of the main architectural groups in 1920s-30s). He was a professor at VKHUTEMAS in 1920s and a head of the United workshop ('Obmas') with Ladovsky and Dokuchaev. During his work at VKHUTEMAS he made a significant contribution to improving the methods of developing spatial thinking among future architects. He himself experimented a lot with the volume, color and texture of the material, revealing the artistic possibilities of these means of architectural expressiveness and developing the most effective methods of teaching. This experience was summed up in this book (together with I.V. Lamtsov and M.A. Turkus) approved for the architectural universities.

        Mein welt bild

        The Pastimes of Aleck Maury

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons. 1934. First. First English edition, published in the U.S. as Aleck Maury, Sportsman.. Near fine in a soiled, good dustwrapper with several modest chips and tears. The author's most important and celebrated novel, about a Southerner who is both a scholar and a sportsman, based on the life of her father. As might be inferred from the subject, interest in the novel in England was bound to be minimal, and the first printing there was almost certainly miniscule. Exceptionally uncommon in the English edition. .

        The Postman Always Rings Twice

Alfred A. Knopf, New York 1934 - First edition. Boards are slightly soiled and near fine, with a supplied proof dustwrapper which came directly from the estate of the artist Arthur Hawkins, Jr. The jacket has been folded with a crease at the spine, Knopf's small Borzoi logo has been cut away from the rear panel (possibly for another design by Hawkins), and Hawkins has written the date "1933" on the front flap, although the book wasn't released until 1934. However the jacket is exceptionally bright and otherwise fine, and about 1/4" taller than the finished version, to which we have compared it (although otherwise identical to it). The jacket was unsigned by Hawkins, unlike most of his work, but is credited to him in Heller and Chwast's seminal study of jacket design, *Jackets Required* -- the survival of this proof in his estate seems to confirm their research. A milestone of hardboiled literature that was the basis for the classic 1946 film featuring Lana Turner and John Garfield (as well as at least three other versions). *Haycraft-Queen Cornerstone.* This proof jacket is likely unique.         Good-bye, Mr. Chips (Goodbye)

Hodder & Stoughton, London 1934 - First English edition (preceded by the American edition, which did not have the Bip Pares illustrations). Two neat owner's names on the front fly (both prominent Englishmen), very slightly foxed, else fine in near fine dustwrapper with a little rubbing and a few tiny tears. Signed by Hilton. Basis for two films: the 1939 Sam Wood-directed version with Robert Donat (who beat out Clark Gable, Henry Fonda, and others for the Best Actor Oscar in what was probably Hollywood's best year ever), Greer Garson, and Paul Henreid, and the 1969 remake directed by Herbert Ross with Peter O'Toole, Petula Clark, and Michael Redgrave. A very nice copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Faust. Der Tragödie erster Teil.

N.p.: Mimeograph typescript, 1934. The successful German-Jewish banker Hans Arnold made his home in Berlin a salon for artists, musicians, and intellectuals (the structure now houses the American Academy in Berlin). As a patron of the arts, Arnold merited this hand-made gift, dedicated for Christmas 1934, of a Goethe's Faust, one of an unspecified (but certainly tiny) number of mimeographed copies printed on Crown Van Gelder watermarked paper and accompanied by an original drawing by the notable illustrator Michel Fingesten. The gift dedication is signed by Grete Scholz (d. 1937), wife of the painter Fritz-Karl Scholz-Wetterhof (d. 1945?). (Fingesten's ex-libris for Grete Scholz is extant.) Michel Fingesten (1884-1943), was a peripatetic artist known primarily for illustrated bookplates, who produced a rich body of work in the course of his agitated life. An Italian Jew, he was held in the concentration camp at Ferramonti for three years until its liberation in 1943. He died soon after a result of wounds sustained in a car accident. This volume is an artifact of the vibrant artistic and intellectual life that flourished in Germany and Mitteleurop at the cusp of Fascist domination in the 1930s. . 27 cm; [2], 169, [1], pages, dedication leaf, and original pencil and chalk title leaf with portrait of a grinning Mephistopheles, by Michel Fingesten (Michl Finkelstein), signed in pencil, protected by glassine leaf. Dedication "für HANS ARNOLD geschreiben, Weihnachten 1934," signed in ink by Grete Scholz. Text mimeographed typescript on Crown Van Gelder. Bound in half vellum over buckram cloth-covered boards, with buckram endleaves. Title stamped in gilt letters on vellum panel of top board. Upper board somewhat bowed, but book is effectively pristine.
