        Logische Syntax der Sprache.

Wien, J. Springer. 1934 - XI + 1 + 274 + 2 S. Priv. Lwd. späterer Zeit, mit aufgezogener RTitelei. EA. - Schriften zur wissenschaftlichen Weltauffassung, Bd. 8. - R. leicht berieben, leichte Gbrsp.

Bonnie & Clyde "Wanted" poster issued two days before fatal Louisiana ambush

Washington, DC, May 21, 1934. 8" x 8". "Vintage 1934 double-sided "Wanted" poster of Bonnie Parker (1910-1934) and Clyde Barrow (1909-1934) designed to be distributed throughout the United States via mail service. Cream colored stock paper measuring 8" x 8" printed recto with photos, names, aliases, physical descriptions, and family members of Bonnie and Clyde. Integral address leaf verso left with "Division of Investigation, U.S. Department of Justice" return address and list of Special Agent addresses and telephone extensions verso right. In near fine condition with light overall toning and minor edge browning particularly to lower right corner. The "Wanted" poster, identification order no. 1227, was issued by J. Edgar Hoover, Director of the Division of Investigation, U.S. Department of Justice on May 21, 1934, just two days before Bonnie and Clyde were killed in a police ambush in Louisiana. The official charge was theft of a motor vehicle, although Bonnie and Clyde were "also wanted in connection with assault and [the] murder of officers". The stolen car precipitating this "Wanted" poster, a Ford V-8 coupe taken from Effingham, Illinois around September 1932, was like the one the couple were later killed in, the so-called "Death Car" perforated with over 150 rounds of bullets."Clyde Champion Barrow and Bonnie Parker constantly travel together and extreme caution must be exercised", the poster instructed. If there was any doubt as to Bonnie and Clyde's identities, they could be recognized by bullet and burn wound scars sustained during the pair's slew of assaults, kidnappings, robberies, prison breaks, and murders during the last two years. The couple was gunned down by a handful of Texas and Louisiana lawmen the morning of May 23, 1934. The posse had been tracking the Barrow gang since May 21st, the day this poster was issued.A sensational piece of crime memorabilia!"

        In a Province.

Leonard and Virginia Woolf at the Hogarth Press, London., 1934. First edition. Octavo. 350 pages. 1250 copies were printed, of which 300 were pulped. The author's rare first book. From the blurb: ''There are very few novels about South Africa which throw any light on the relations between the races. Here, however, is a first novel...which deals with a situation involving two individuals, one white and one black. It shows the breaking-up of two worlds, one pagan and one protestant, and hints at the possibility of some future reintegration. The author is a Dutch South African, whose father fought against the English in the Boer War. His insight and his sympathies would in any case be remarkable, but are most striking in one who was born and bred on the veld.'' Fore-edges of last few pages a little spotted, otherwise fine in the very scarce, very good indeed, slightly marked, dustwrapper, by Anthony Butts, which has a short tear and crease at the top edge of upper panel.

        The Way of All Flesh.

London: Collins,, 1934. Octavo. Original purple cloth, titles to spine and front cover in gilt, green and white patterned endpapers. Wood engravings to text by John Farleigh. Spine faded, rear hinge partly cracked but text block sound. A very good copy. Association copy, inscribed by A. A. Milne to his son Christopher on the title page, "For Moon, with love from Blue. Christmas 1940". At the time this copy was inscribed, Christopher, having completed his first year at Cambridge before deciding to join the Royal Engineers, was awaiting his call-up papers at the Milne's home in Cotchford (his parents had left London permanently earlier in 1940). He had been due to commence training in November 1940, but had failed the medical examination due to a mistake by the medical board; this was subsequently rectified, but he had to wait until the following February to join his battalion. Christopher was at this point still extremely close to his father, "and would remain so throughout the war, though for several years separated by many hundreds of miles". This book was of special significance to Milne, who considered The Way of All Flesh "the best novel in the English language"; it was first published in 1903, and this is a later edition. Milne explained his son's nickname in his autobiography: "One of us thought of Robin, the other of Christopher; names wasted on him who called himself Billy Moon as soon as he could talk, and has been Moon to his family and friends ever since" (Milne, It's Too Late Now). Christopher eventually outgrew the nickname "Billy", though his father continued to call him "Moon"; Milne was nicknamed "Blue" on account of his eyes, "the bluest eyes I have ever seen" recalled Nancy Spain.

[PHOTOGRAPH ALBUM CONTAINING NEARLY ONE HUNDRED SEVENTY ORIGINAL SILVER GELATIN PHOTOGRAPHS TAKEN BY A CREW MEMBER OF THE UNITED STATES COAST GUARD CUTTER NORTHLAND DURING ITS 1934 VOYAGE ALONG THE ALASKA COAST INTO THE BERING SEA]

[Alaska, 1934. 169 photographs, most 2 x 3 inches, with a few larger prints, plus several newspaper clippings. Oblong folio. Original brown leather album, with custom embossed image of naval ship two button snaps at fore- edge, tied with a leather strap at gutter margin. Light soiling to covers, small tear around one snap fastening. Photos in corner mounts on black card stock. Minor fading and light staining to a few images. Very good. A substantial collection of lively snapshots taken by a crew member, most likely an officer, of the United States Coast Guard Cutter Northland during an annual Arctic cruise to Point Barrow, Alaska, in 1934. The Northland was a gunboat specially designed for Arctic waters and the last cruising cutter for the Coast Guard equipped with a sailing rig. From 1929 to 1938, the boat patrolled the Bering Sea gathering military intelligence, carrying mail, enforcing the law, transporting teachers to remote areas, conducting medical service, and surveying coastlines. The album documents the Northland's 1934 expedition from Seattle via the Inside Passage, with stops on the Aleutian Islands, Nome, Elim village (Norton Bay, Bering Sea), King Island, St. Lawrence Island (both in the Bering Sea), and Teller (on the Alaskan coast of the Bering Strait). It includes views of the Northland near a pier in Seattle (captioned "We Say goodbye", and on the verso: "Your Dad unwittingly got into this one, see if you can pick him out"), a photo of the crew members list; views of the Inside Passage (some with captions on the verso, such as, "A narrow turn on Wrangel Narrows... Only a scant few feet separate the vessel from land. This picture was taken from the crow's nest. The Carpenter Mr. Dough took it with his camera…," and, "Swanson's Bay on the way up in the Inland Passage. A beautiful spot. Hope that you and Chickie may some day come here"). The album further contains images of Dutch Harbor and Mount Ballyhoo on Unalaska Island, including shots of crew members in walrus skin boats and camping on the tundra, a trout pond, Mount Pyramid, and ageneral view of Unalaska village. As the voyage progesses, the images depict the icefields near Nome, two street views of Nome (with the crew members posing in front of the office of the "Nome Daily Nugget" newspaper), several views of Elim village (including native houses, public school, portraits of the locals and an Eskimo boy), houses on a cliff on the "King Island, North Bering Sea," "Landing Rock, King Island," "Savoonga, St. Lawrence Is.," "Landing at Savoonga," and several views of Teller (main street, "Mr. & Mrs. Whaley" swimming, and a "Moving Picture camp near Teller"). There are also a number of photos of the Northland's bridge, wardroom, radio room, and deck, a view crow's nest, scenes of setting the mainsail and firing the deck guns during a 4th of July celebration, as well as portraits of some officers and crew, including Lieutenants Maude, Saranson, Morrel, and Edwards, Dr. Bingman, ensign Olsen. In two photos, the sailors experience the night life in Unalaska (captioned on verso: "I tried to photograph a native orchestra, but the navy wanted its picture," and "Scene in Unalaska, saloon"), and in another a crew member gold pans in Nome. The clippings from the "Nome Daily Nugget" at rear provide some information about a project to establish a two-way radio communication between the Northland and the camp of Admiral Richard Byrd in Little America (near the South Pole). Overall a very interesting historically important album showing remote settlements in Alaska and the Bering Sea.

Seven Gothic Tales [Out of Africa]

London: Putnam, 1934. First Impression. Hardcover. Fine. The uncommon First British Edition of Isak Dinesen's first book. Thick 8vo: [6],522pp, with full-color frontispiece (repeating dust jacket design) by Rex Whistler. Publisher's cinnamon colored cloth, spine lettered in gilt; illustrated dust jacket, priced 7s / 6d. About Fine (spine ends bumped, top edge slightly dust soiled); about Fine jacket (spine panel lightly toned). A scarce survival. Blixen's first book, published first in the United States under the pseudonym Isak Dinesen. These intricate and imaginative tales, all set in the nineteenth century, won wide acclaim in America and soon appeared in this edition in Britain and then in Denmark (as Syv fantastiske fortællinger). "Since her pseudonym was quickly penetrated, she published under her own name in every country, except the United States, where 'Isak Dinesen' swiftly became a valuable brand. Among the main stylistic influences on Blixen's tales can be counted the English gothic novel, German Romanticism, Boccacio's Decameron, and The Arabian Nights. When asked why she set her tales over a hundred years in the past, Blixen responded that the past could be more easily recompounded in her imagination, and she would not be forced to resort to realism. " (Literary Encyclopedia) Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.

Brick-red cloth boards, gilt-stamped spine, top edge brown. Dime-size splash of fading to top edge stain, streak of light staining running down rear free endpaper, few flecks of foxing on endpapers and page edges, otherwise bright and fine.         Peiping.

Peiyang Press. (circa1934)., [Peiping]. - Coloured folding plan of Peking with original envelope. 60 x 50cm. A few neat repairs at folds, two panels evenly browned on reverse. A very good copy of a scarce pictorial plan with its envelope. This delightful and scarce pictorial map of Peking with landmarks and streets in romanised Chinese, with occasional Chinese characters, is surprisingly scarce. Although apparently issued in several editions in the 1920s and 30s, it appears relatively infrequently on the market. The divisions of the Legation District are indicated by their flags - this edition shows the German Legation by use of the black, white and red bands of the German flag. This flag which was no longer used after 1935 helps date this edition. Other landmarks and attractions shown included theatres, foreign shopping area adjacent to the legations quarter, Liu Li Chang Curio District, the racecourse, the many city gates etc.
