      - Japan 1934, Jacoulet. A single deluxe large print, sheet size ca. 35 x 46 cm.,print size ca. 30 x 39.5 cm., woodblock printed by hand on hand-made paper, carved by Yamagishi, printed by Ushibara. FIRST LIMITED & ONLY NUMBERED EDITION This being number 71 of 150 prints. * This is Jacoulet's FIRST print, and the print That launched his artistic career. It is also the first print in a projected flower series which included eight other prints. * The mica background is flawless & magnificent. Other printers who tried this delicate technique later saw this mica chip and flaked off. However, Jacoulet's master printer Ushibara expertly applied mica with such skill and produced a flawless example. * OUR COPY: Our copy is the FIRST PRINTING, of which 150 impressions were done, and is distinguished by the "two frown" lines found on the woman's forehead. Per Miles p.89, "this is omitted in the second edition." . This very RARE print is signed in pencil "Paul Jacoulet" then "Fan" sealed with his cinnabar chop [Hanko]. The paper is watermarked "PJ" in the lower left corner. Miles has also pointed out on p.128 that: "The South Seas prints were all created from sketches and paintings done between 1929 and 1936. Since many were lost because of World War II bombing of Tokyo, several of them are among the rarest & most desirable of all the artist's oeuvre." . Then Miles then cites a list of these "most desirable" prints, and begins with this print as number one on that list ! See Miles below. *** CONDITION: There is a bit of toning to the margin, otherwise, a flawless example. The sparkle of the crushed mica is truly beautiful and represents a high-water mark in Japanese woodblock hand-printing technique. Truly lovely as the day it was published. Framed and glazed. We have posted two color photos of this to our home page: the first under "cover" is a digital photo of this print; the second is the color frontispiece from Miles under "illustration 1." * A copy recently sold at auction for $1800. * REFERENCE: R. Miles; THE PRINTS OF PAUL JACOULET, illustrated as the color frontispiece and again on p.41, as item number 1, descriptive text on p.89. . Per Miles: "Jacoulet's first print was made from his favorite South Seas watercolor. The original depicted a far more worn and prematurely aged creature than did either of the editions. The paler coloring and introspective expression of the first impression gave way to crisper, brighter colors under Jacoulet's direct supervision. There is a rich silver mica background." ***

FIRST & ONLY OBSCURE EDITION A STUNNING WOODBLOCK PRINTED "ART DECO" "AVANT-GARDE" ALBUM . . A folio sized large color-printed woodblock accordion folded album with ten stunning "Art Deco" Japanese prints with creative and skilled composition and fantastic color use, reflecting the "Avant-Garde" movement. . . *** CONTENTS: . Title page in Japanese listing ten print titles. Each print is lightly tipped in to the album at the top edge, each 21 x 31.7 cm. . Each woodblock print is printed in stunning polychrome or multi-colors. Each is a masterpiece work, with excellent registry and color, each is flawless, no issues. . THE WOODCUT PRINTS: . 1. Depicts a bird with cherry blossoms and Yanagi [weeping willow] tree. . 2. Shows a large paulownia floral Mon on a grand-size textile partition, indicating the Imperial family home, with white pear blossoming tree. . 3. A stunning iris with bamboo lattice, colorful flowers and leaves. . 4. Illustrates a pair of water-foul in the river, with a double cherry blossom on the shore and three rocks, gentle flowing wave patterns. . 5. Two bamboo stalks and a new bamboo shoot, eight bamboo leaves in purple, red and green. Fascinating composition. . 6. A stunning scene showing a blue butterfly hovering over a wheat-like flower head, with red and green leaves, with a pale yellow flower in bloom. There is some crushed mica used to pattern of the wind in the background, flowing behind the flowers and butterfly. The use of mica is the most difficult and complicated form of woodblock printing ever used in Japan. It is a special technique, involving the use of mica crushed into a "glittering" ink-like color, reflecting silver color. Indicative of a master artist and superb block printer at his best. Seldom used technique due to its high level of application difficulty. . 7. An owl in a cypress tree, with black and white trunk and leaves. The owl has brown outer feathers, pale crème chest feathers with a blue-black beak and large eyes with gray outline. The background in a diagonal purple within a gray sky, impressive image and composition. . 8. Weeping willow sprig in the foreground, a traditional Japanese bridge with its red-lacquer posts and rail, topped with a bronze miniature Buddhist pagoda. In the background are two round bamboo baskets, each a different color: foremost is gold with gray background, the second is purple, both sit before a powerful indigo-blue "V" shaped background, with a pale blue-silver second background from the upper left corner progressing through the left half of the image to the lower right corner. A stunning composition and creative use of color. . 9. Two Peony flowers, one in white the other in crimson, with black leaves, against a green-covered mountain with oxidized copper-ochre background. Behind the two mountains are two very tall and jagged mountains with two streams of clouds in brilliant white moving half-way across the sheet. Yet another stunning composition and imaginative and very creative use of color and forms. . 10. Pink flowers with tiny white stamens on a dark brown twig, the background is a blue ocean with lovely wave-patterns in silver, behind which is a green mountain, and a silver background, again special and skillful use of crushed mica to indicate the sea spray rising from the ocean waves. The foreground has pale brown, beige and cream with silver grass and twigs in a delicate pattern. Beautifully executed composition and creative use of color . Please view the images posted to our website for this gem. *** This is a stunning example of some of Japan's best "Art Deco" and "Avant-Garde" work of the period. . *** CONDITION: The front album cover is woodblock-printed paper, with a purple floral pattern and black Sumi-ink Kanji titles. The back cover is cover

        Fuji-Yama and other Poems.

London: The Eastern Press, Ltd.,, [1934]. Transcribed from the Chinese and Japanese Originals. Duodecimo. Original green cloth, gilt titles to spine and front, top edge gilt. Spine tanned, chip from the cloth at head, some other light wear and mottling to the cloth, internally sound and clean, a good copy. First and only edition, presentation copy from the author to H. G. Wells, inscribed on the half-title, "To H. G. Wells, In friendship and admiration, Gonnoské Komai." The author was a Japanese poet living in London between the wars, who also published Dream from China and Japan (1918) and Fuji from Hampstead Heath (1925). This book is one of several from the library of H. G. Wells that were sent to his illegitimate daughter Anna-Jane Kennard (1909-2010), the product of his 1908-9 extramarital affair with feminist author Amber Reeves (1887-1981). Well's novel Ann Veronica (1909) is based on his affair with Reeves. Kennard did not know the true identity of her father throughout her childhood and adolescence, but eventually they met. On 6 March 1931 Wells wrote to his daughter: "My dear, I think that you and I have to come to perfectly frank dealings with each other: let us clear up the situation. For 19 years I have been doing my best to ignore your existence because of various humiliating and baffling things that occurred when you were born. Now I have met you, I love you very much." Later, during the Second World War, as a fitting gesture recognising their connection, Wells sent to his daughter, then living in her mother's native New Zealand, several boxes of books from his library. This copy has her pencil ownership inscription "A. Kennard" to the front free endpaper. The book is quite scarce, with only three copies listed in British institutions, and none in the British Library.

Preserved in three quarter leather clamshell box, with a rounded spine, raised bands, gilt titling and rules. First UK Edition. Inscribed by the author to actor Christopher Lee on the title page: "For Christopher Lee / Who gave such a magnificent performance as Richleau in the film of the story / from Dennis." Laid in is a one-page typed letter from Wheatley to Christopher Lee, on the author's own stationary, some 130 words. From the estate of Christopher Lee, with full provenance available. As great an association as can be imagined, between the author and the horror icon who brought that author's 1934 novel to life 30 years after it was written. Wheatley's novel is considered to be the best novel of supernatural fiction, and its 1968 film version, adapted by Richard Matheson and directed by Terence Fisher, one of the best supernatural thrillers of Hammer Films' golden age, a decade bursting with novels in that genre. The novel is set in London of the 1920s, where two friends, the recurring Wheatley character the Duke de Richleau (Christopher Lee) and Rex (Leon Greene) go to the home of their good friend and end up interrupting the meeting of a Satanic cult. The Duc, an expert on the occult, spends the remainder of the novel protecting his friends from cult followers and going head-to-head with the Angel of Death. In an October 26, 1967 letter to his fan club president, Gloria Lillibridge, Lee notes: "Author Dennis Wheatley came to see us on the set and told me that he was delighted with the way in which we were making his story...I have high hopes of this film, as it will prove, once and for all, that I can be accepted in a completely normal role" (Johnson, Tom, et al. The Christopher Lee Filmography: All Theatrical Releases, 1948-2003 US. The role of Duc proved to be a defining one for Lee, and from the tone of Wheatley's inscription, his admiration for the actor is quite clear. As late as 2015, Lee was rumored to have a huge interest in the occult, and an enormous private library on the subject; Lee relayed the following to an interviewer: "I don't have a huge collection. Somebody wrote I had twenty thousand books (laughter). I would have to live in a bath (extended laughter). I have maybe four or five...I have "The Devil Rides Out," first edition, signed to me by Dennis Wheatley."

Seven Gothic Tales [Out of Africa]

London: Putnam, 1934. The uncommon First British Edition of Isak Dinesen's first book. Thick 8vo: [6],522pp, with full-color frontispiece (repeating dust jacket design) by Rex Whistler. Publisher's cinnamon colored cloth, spine lettered in gilt; illustrated dust jacket, priced 7s / 6d. About Fine (spine ends bumped, top edge slightly dust soiled); about Fine jacket (spine panel lightly toned). A scarce survival. Blixen's first book, published first in the United States under the pseudonym Isak Dinesen. These intricate and imaginative tales, all set in the nineteenth century, won wide acclaim in America and soon appeared in this edition in Britain and then in Denmark (as Syv fantastiske fortællinger). "Since her pseudonym was quickly penetrated, she published under her own name in every country, except the United States, where 'Isak Dinesen' swiftly became a valuable brand. Among the main stylistic influences on Blixen's tales can be counted the English gothic novel, German Romanticism, Boccacio's Decameron, and The Arabian Nights. When asked why she set her tales over a hundred years in the past, Blixen responded that the past could be more easily recompounded in her imagination, and she would not be forced to resort to realism.         Fuji-Yama and other Poems. Transcribed from the Chinese and Japanese Originals.

London: The Eastern Press, Ltd., [1934] - Duodecimo. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

[FROM AVANT-GARDE TO REALISTIC THEATRE] Teatr i dramaturgiya: Ezhemesiachnyi obshchestvenno-politicheskii i khudozhestvennyi zhurnal teatra i dramaturgii [i.e. Theatre and Dramaturgy: Monthly Political and Art Magazine on Theatre and Drama]

Moscow, 1934. Full set of 1934. #1-11/12. 29,5x21 cm. In publisher's cloth with silver colored stamping (title and year). Publisher's wrappers of all issues are preserved in the binding. Very good. Spine is rubbed, with a few small tears of the extremities (#2), rare owner's markings in the text. Each issue of 5000 copies. Richly illustrated with photographs, color plates, illustrations, set designs, etc. In the beginning of 1930s Soviet theatre moved into a new era. All experimental studios and theaters were gradually closing and only one style - Soviet realism - remained and became the official one. The growth of the audience led to necessity of creating new 'popular' theatrical magazine. 'Theatre and Dramaturgy' was a Soviet illustrated monthly magazine, printed as 'Soviet Theatre' from 1930 till 1933, as 'Theatre and Dramaturgy' from 1933 till 1936 and 'Theatre' from 1937. The magazine was supposed to form views of readers and be a trendsetter in this area for the whole Soviet Union as it was the time of building Soviet ideology. The magazine was not meant only for professionals, moreover its unusual design and a lot of illustrations were more appealing to a general public. But among all important materials coming from rulers of the state and party, 'Theatre and Dramaturgy' was providing points of view in the beginning, like some of the current issues include reviews and photos of Meyerhold's experimental works in his theatre. Only later the magazine will execute political order of the party, like criticizing same Meyerhold whose theatre and life ended during Stalin terror.
