First true hardcover edition, previously published by the Atlantic Magazine and as a supplement for an English newspaper. Basis for two films in 1939 and 1969, a 1984 TV mini series, and a TV show in 2002. The most popular of these productions was the 1969 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer film directed by Herbert Ross and starring Peter OÕToole, Petula Clarke, and Michael Redgrave. Near Fine but for some light foxing to endpapers and spotting to page ends, in a Very Good dustjacket, with spine mildly darkened with single crease running spineÕs length, only the lightest wear to spine ends and flap corners.       Hodder & Stoughton, London 1934 - First Edition. 8vo., 127pp. A near fine or better copy in bright blue gilt lettered boards in a very good dustwrapper showing modest use; neat bookplate to front pastedown, wrapper with a few tiny chips & a 3/4" loss to the spine crown. Basis for two films: the 1939 version directed by Sam Wood with Robert Donat who beat out Clark Gable, Henry Fonda & others for the Best Actor Oscar & the 1969 Herbert Ross directed re-do with Peter O'Toole, Petula Clark & Michael Redgrave. Faults notwithstanding a nice copy of Hilton's most famous title, an honour shared with his Classic 'Lost Horizon'. Hilton was born in Lancashire, England in 1900; son of John Hilton, headmaster of Chapel End School in Walthamstow. His father was one of the inspirations for the character of Mr. Chipping in the novel. Hilton was born on Wilkinson Street in Leigh & there is a teacher in Goodbye, Mr. Chips called Mr. Wilkinson. The setting too is believed to have been based on the Leys School, Cambridge, where James Hilton was a pupil. Chipping is also likely to have been based on W. H. Balgarnie, one of the school's masters who was in charge of the Leys Fortnightly, where Hilton's first short stories & essays were published. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        MOSS ROSE.

      London: William Heinemann Ltd., [1934]. - First edition. Light foxing to a few preliminary pages else near fine in professionally restored dust jacket at spine ends, corners, and top edge of rear panel. Pseudonym of Gabrielle Margaret Vere Campbell. This is one of the author's many fascinating novels based upon actual murder cases using her own interpretations as to what actually happened and who was really guilty. MOSS ROSE is based upon an 1872 murder of a prostitute named Buswell, which was never solved. Belle Adair, is the young woman "of good birth and education but quite ruined in reputation," who knew the truth of what the police had to dismiss as "an unsolved mystery." "How she used her knowledge and silence and her power over the murderer to re-enter the society to which she had been born, and to lift herself from degradation, is the theme of Mr. Shearing's novel." Additionally the movie of the same name, a film noir selection, was issued in 1947 by Twentieth Century-Fox and directed by Gregory Ratoff. The film starred Peggy Cummins as Belle Adair aka Rose Lynton, Victor Mature, Ethel Barrymore, Vincent Price, Margo Woode, George Zucco, Patricia Medina, and Rhys Williams. 20th Century Crime & Mystery Writers says, "Although these are not feminist novels, they often show Victorian women bored by narrow interests, incapable of self-preservation, held down by male authority, and Shearing is very successful in establishing a tone of brutal sexuality without recourse to explicit detail.         Houdini's Paper Magic Tricks [SCARCE DUSTJACKET]

      E.P. Dutton 1934 - A handsome Fourth Printing (so stated) of Houdini's paper magic trick book in a scarce dustjacket. A fascinating book of tricks ranging from simple to more complicated with full directions. Originally published in 1922. 206 pp. In green cloth with orange titling, the book is in very good condition with some lightening to the spine, light foxing on the covers and top edge and an occasional very small spot in the book, but overall the book interior is clean and bright. The bottom and fore edges are rough cut and only slightly toned. The scarce dustjacket is complete in bright yellow soft cotton paper with advertisements for "Gypsy Rickwood's Fortune-Telling Book," "Miracle Mongers and Their Methods," There is lightening on the dustjacket spine, and small seam splits at the spine ends and o the panel seams; although overall the dustjacket is very solid. (price-clipped) [a solid clean copy, firmly bound, with light fading to cloth at spine and around edges of both covers, minor browning/soiling to page edges, gift inscription on ffep and one-time owner's name in ink at bottom of rear pastedown; jacket is edgeworn, moderately soiled, missing pieces at both ends of the spine (including loss of most of "Jonah's" at top), old internal tape repair/reinforcements at some of the folds, and the ffep gift inscription has offset onto the front jacket flap -- but the front panel is substantially intact and still quite attractive]. The author's first novel and first published book, "the life story of a big, lovable Georgian negro," preacher and carpenter John Pearson, and his wife, "little black-eyed Lucy Potts" -- basically thinly fictionalized portrayals of Hurston's own parents. Hurston was well-established as a short-story writer and folklorist, and her first book was widely anticipated -- as evidenced by the publisher's ability to recruit jacket blurbs from Carl Van Vechten and Fannie Hurst, the latter also supplying the book's introduction. .

(B&W photographs) Biographical/historical fiction at its very finest, not only a compelling read itself but also the basis for one of the most highly-regarded television adaptations of all time, the 1976 BBC production starring Derek Jacobi in the title role. The rather droll jacket blurb catches the spirit of the goings-on wonderfully: "The action is alternately strange, tragic and ludicrous, for Rome knows herself under a long-standing curse ... and has lost all moral self-control. Poison, blasphemy, treachery, incest, black magic, unnatural vice flourish. Insane cruelties are committed. Nobody seems to care." Very uncommon in the original dust jacket, by an uncredited artist who makes old Claudius look like a fairly benign guy. .

The Death Ship/Das Totenschiff was originally written in English in 1923 or 1924. Traven translated it into German at the request of Buchergilde Gutenberg editor Ernst Preczang who was impressed by the serialization of Die Baumwollpflucker in Vorwarts. Das Totenschiff was published in 1926. It was the first book to appear under the Traven name and its success established Traven's reputation.Traven's most brilliant novel. It is a sardonic work about identity and a satire on the faceless bureaucracy. The American sailor, Gales, has no papers; therefore, in the eyes of the authorities, he doesn't exist. In order to escape from Europe he is forced to sign aboard a "Death Ship." Considerably revised and rewritten from the Chatto & Windus edition with 61 additional pages, and is considered by many to be a superior translation. Treverton 32. The book is fine with near fine unfaded wrapper with the lightest of rubbing.Steven Temple of Steven Temple books ,Toronto notes there are two issues but I dont think it has been established whether there is any precedence. I know very little about Canadian bibliography but with similiar population to Australia with the exception that 40% are french speakers I assume that their print runs would have been between 500-1000.         A Handful Of Dust.

      Chapman and Hall, London 1934 - First edition. Octavo, original cloth. An excellent copy with some of the usual sporadic foxing to the page edges. Few writers have walked the line between farce and tragedy as nimbly as Evelyn Waugh, who employed the conventions of the comic novel to chip away at the already crumbling English class system. His 1934 novel, A Handful of Dust, is a sublime example of his bleak satirical style: a mordantly funny exposé of aristocratic decadence and ennui in England between the wars. "The most mature and the best written novel that Mr. Waugh has yet produced." (New Statesman & Nation). Listed by Modern Library as one of the 100 great novels of the twentieth century, and was chosen by Time magazine as one of the one hundred best English-language novels from 1923 to present.         The Casino Murder Case

      New York: Charles Scribner's Sons. 1934. First. First edition. A very good copy with some smudging and light staining in a supplied but sympathetic, very good, price-clipped dustwrapper with slight internal stains. Inscribed by the author: "To Dr. Hugh Stott Taylor With great appreciation for his gracious assistance, and with warm personal regards. S.S. Van Dine." The English-born Taylor was a chemist who spent much of his life at Princeton, and who in World War II played a prominent role in the American scientific effort, directing a number of research projects, and contributing to the development of the atomic bomb with his discovery of the most effective catalyst for producing heavy water. He was knighted by both the Queen and the Pope in the same month. A Chair in chemistry is named for him at Princeton. The inscription would seem to indicate that Taylor provided advice to Van Dine about the novel (or at least to Willard Huntington Wright, as Van Dine was a pseudonym). A Philo Vance novel, filmed in 1935 with Paul Lukas as Vance, starring opposite Rosalind Russell in one of her earliest roles. .

      (N.p., Self-published 1934-1940) - Hand-assembled photo albums. Oblong octavos. Three unique, twenty-four-page albums filled with small format black and white photographs. Each album was captioned and hand decorated with ink-and-gouache drawings on gray card stock, presumably by the unidentified photographer. The whimsical, humorous illustrations create an ironic contrast to the photographs which document the traveler's journeys across Europe at the dawn of the Second World War. The albums also contain mounted travel tickets and ephemera. A truly unique and fascinating set from both an aesthetic and historical perspective. All texts in German. Paris (1934); string-bound in near fine, slightly soiled cloth-covered linen boards. Rome and Albania (1938); ribbon-bound in near fine felt-covered linen boards, with photographs protected by cobweb-imprinted tissue dividers (some small holes in the black felt covering).       NP, Danzig 1934 - 4to. 243-463pp. Vol. 2 only. Dark blue cloth, gold lettering on spine. An extended bibliography providing a multitude of sources dealing with all aspects of the Poland corridor- the Baltic access land which Poland received at the Congress of Vienna after World War I. While the ethnic majority in the Corridor was Polish, the city of Gdansk (German: Danzig) had a significant German population, and when the Corridor split Germany from Eastern Prussia, the move drew significant anger from the Weimar Republic, which never formally acknowledged the new borders. When Hitler first took power in 1933, he reversed previous Weimar policy and entered into diplomatic negotiations with Poland, eventually signing a ten-year Polish-German Non-Aggression Pact in 1934- the year this bibliography was published. The index organizes the bibliography into 3 sections- "Danzig," "Grenzprovinzen" (border provinces), and "Grenz- und Auslandsdeutschtum des Ostens" (Borders and ex-patriots living in the East). Each of the 3 sections is then further organized into subsections dealing with the land, the history, the people, the politics, the economy, the culture, and so forth. While the text starts with page 243, it is a monographic work (the first volume was not related to the project). The bibliography was released on a yearly basis, and this 1934 printing includes the entries from 1931, 1932, and 1933. While Prinzhorn aims to construct an exhaustive account of the region, providing many Polish as well as German sources, Prinzhorn- who also wrote bibliographies for a number of other regions integral to Nazi manifest destiny, such as Sudutenland- is ultimately highly motivated to make the case for Danzig and the Corridor being ethnic German land. Text in German, in mimeographed typescript. Nazi library ink stamp on front end paper (Reichsleitung der NSDAP Amt Schrifttumspflege), slight staining and foxing on page edges. Beginnings of a tear at one fold on the railway map. Colours still bright. Corner dog-eared on Map of Routes No. 1. Inkstamp of ticket seller (Frames' Tours Ltd.) on leaflet. The London Underground map is undated, but it shows Harry Beck's iconic, geometric design and the Piccadilly line completed to Cockfosters station, suggesting it, like the other maps in this collection, was made in 1934. Other lines shown include District, Bakerloo, Edgware, Highgate & Morden, Metropolitan, Great Northern & City, and East London. The only difference between the two fold-out bus maps seems to be the quote featured on the cover. 1934 also featured the introduction of the bus shelter, a welcome development for riders. The railway map includes metropolitan, tube & district and other railways in a geographical format, plus the locations of local venues, mostly sports-related. The back lists many more places of interest along with the closest station. The leaflet advertises the schedule for a tour boat that left from Tower Pier.

In a rare departure from habit, O'Neill agreed to contribute some non-dramatic writings to the magazine. George Jean Nathan, Ernest Boyd, Theodore Dreiser and Cabell were also joint editors with O'Neill on this short-lived publication.
