        TARZAN AND HIS MATE (1934)

USA 1934 - Vintage original 8 x 14" (20 x 36 cm.) mini-window/midget window card, USA, Johnny Weissmuller, Maureen O'Sullivan, Neil Hamilton, Paul Cavanagh, dir: Cedric Gibbons, Jack Conway; MGM. The best and the most loved of the Johnny Weismuller Tarzan series, which ran from 1932 through 1942 at MGM with the lovely O'Sullivan as Jane and then continued at RKO between 1943 and 1948. This is the sexiest of the titles as well with O'Sullivan in her two piece jungle wear and Weissmuller in his abbreviated loin cloth. It contained the still controversial nude swim scene. The scene, which could be shown during the initial April 1934 release, was filmed in several versions (clothed, partially nude and fully nude), was fully cut from the film later that year. It was not until the late-1990s that it was found and restored. Olympic champ Josephine McKim did the actual nude swim for O'Sullivan, but the openly flirtatious, sexual, yet innocent relationship enacted between O'Sullivan and Weismuller remains extremely appealing today and makes the film, with all its wonderful adventure as well, highly watchable and highly collectible. A great Pre-Code title! Poster has been touched up in blank upper margin and lower margin. VERY GOOD.

        WONDER BAR (1934)

USA 1934 - Vintage original 14 x 22" (35 x 56 cm.) window card, USA. Al Jolson, Kay Francis, Dolores del RÃo, Ricardo Cortez, Dick Powell, Guy Kibee, Ruth Donnelly, Hugh Herbert, Louise Fazenda, dir: Lloyd Bacon, Busby Berkeley; Warner Brothers. Wonder Bar is the Paris entertainment bar owned by Al Wonder, and he welcomes the audience in (on camera and in the cinema audience) to his establishment with a song "Vive La France." This performance (at Jolson's insistence) would be one of the last to be done live on camera (with the Warner Brothers orchestra live on set portraying the club's band). The story involved a tragic love triangle which ended in murder -- a more lively script than standard musical faire of the day but, still, it was Busby Berkeley's wildly staged and edited production numbers which to this day are memorable. This included the number "Don't Say Good-Night." Released just prior to the code enforcement, the film is full of illicit sex relationships, homosexual references and getting away with murder. Today audiences may cringe at the now-politically incorrect production number "Goin' to Heaven on a Mule," which featured the Hall Johnson Choir. Witty and naughty, audiences loved it and it made a nice profit for Warner Brothers. Paper-backed, there has been some skillful but routine touch up to bottom margin and in the area of a couple of the small images of stars, NEAR VERY GOOD.

Very Best Wishes from Rev. and Mrs. Jacob Goldstein'Edited by Jacob de Haas in collaboration with move than one hundred and fifty scholars and specialists. Jacob De Haas(1872 1937) was a British Hasidic Jew, a journalist and an early leader of the Zionist movement, who propagated the movement in the United States. He moved to the United States in 1902. Theodor Herzl, had suggested to Richard Gottheil that he hire de Haas as the new secretary of the Federation of American Zionists (FAZ) to replace Stephen Samuel Wise. De Haas assumed the leadership of the fragmented American Zionist movement. One of his best known accomplishments was his befriending of Louis Brandeis, the best known, and admired secular Jew in America. De Haas introduced Brandeis to the ideas of Theodor Herzl and ideals of Zionism. After a relatively short period of examination and self-examination, Louis Brandeis became an ardent, committed Zionist in 1908. More importantly, Brandeis, would head the FAZ and the American Zionist movement by 1912. Condition: In a half calf binding with cloth covered boards. Externally, sound but with slight bumping and wear to extremities and with the odd stain and mark to boards. Internally, firmly bound. Generally bright and clean throughout but with foxing to endpapers only. Overall: VERY GOOD.

THE WORDS UPON THE WINDOW PANE: A PLAY IN ONE ACT, WITH NOTES UPON THE PLAY AND ITS SUBJECT

Dublin: The Cuala Press, 1934.. Dublin: The Cuala Press, 1934.. Linen-backed boards, paper spine label. Title woodcut engraving "Monoceros de Astris" by T. Sturge Moore. Spine a bit darkened and light ruffling of the spine label along the edges, but a very good copy. Half morocco case and insert, the former graced with a clumsy spelling error in the imprint. First edition. One of 350 copies. An association copy of a high order, inscribed on the first blank: "His friend Olivia from W B Yeats." Yeats met Olivia Shakespear through her cousin, Lionel Johnson, in May 1894. In the double shadows of her troubled marriage to Henry H. Shakespear and Yeats’s unrequited love for Maud Gonne, they began a close and enduring friendship that was punctuated by at least one, if not two, periods of genuine intimacy. In 1896, Yeats entered into a year- long affair with Olivia, counted as his first consummated physical relationship. However, Yeats’s ties to Maud Gonne were irrevocable, and resulted in the emotional termination of the affair recorded in “The Lover Mourns for the Loss of Love.” Several of the other poems he wrote to her are also collected in THE WIND AMONG THE REEDS. They remained close friends and correspondents nonetheless, and it was Olivia who introduced Yeats to Pound in 1909. After her death in October 1938, Yeats wrote about her in a letter: “For more than forty years she has been the centre of my life in London and during all that time we have never had a quarrel, sadness sometimes but never a difference.” WADE 174. Surreal, sometimes amusing, other times creepy or frightening, always clever, fantastic and imaginative illustrations of anthropormophic lion(s) who is seductive, criminal, violent, sadistic. Some of the imagery is erotic as well, as the victims are often women in a state of dishabille. An unique artistic endeavor and a printed rarity in the Ernst oeuvre. The lightest of wear to the wraps. Other than a little light foxing of a few prelim leaves, clean and even pristine within. The original box survives, with some loss and somewhat rough.

» [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Description:2 volumes: 427 pages with facsimile title and index; 513 pages with two facsimile pages, appendix and index. Royal octavo (9 1/2" x 7") bound in three quarter blue leather with raised spine bands and gilt lettering to spine. From the library of George M Foster. Second edition. The two chronicles by Francisco de Burgoa easily hold first place for inflated style and bombastic phraseology, especially the opening remarks to various chapters. Yet for the important area of Oaxaca, and the numerous subjects he treats, Burgoa's works are indispensable and irreplaceable sources. Burgoa, born in Oaxaca, was related to numerous local colonial families. He took his final vows in 1625, and by 1649 was provincial of his Order. In that post he made a special effort to visit various parts of Oaxaca, especially seeking notices of Zapotecan antiquities, with the aim of writing a history of Oaxaca. Before his death in 1681he did not complete it but left two prolix yet valuable published treatises. The two chronicles are the usually abbreviated Palestra historial and Geográfica descripción. Burgoa conceived of them as a single work, but they differ in contents. The Palestra historial is a typical chronicle. It begins with the arrival in 1526 of Dominicans in Mexico City, and shortly thereafter their appearance in Oaxaca. Burgoa rehearses the lives of many missionaries already biographized by Davila Padilla, but Burgoa emphasizes their apostolate in the Oaxaca areas, even before formal establishment of the Province of San Hipolito (1592). These lives are uniformly eulogistic, but scattered through them are important bits of information on the numerous Indian groups of Oaxaca. The Geográfica descripción has 80 chapters. They detail the histories of the Monasteries and the work of their friars among the Indians, with much less attention to biographical detail than in the Palestra historial. The data run to about mid-17th century in both. (Handbook of Middle American Indians) George McClelland Foster, Jr born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on October 9, 1913, died on May 18, 2006, at his home in the hills above the campus of the University of California, Berkeley, where he served as a professor from 1953 to his retirement in 1979, when he became professor emeritus. His contributions to anthropological theory and practice still challenge us; in more than 300 publications, his writings encompass a wide diversity of topics, including acculturation, long-term fieldwork, peasant economies, pottery making, public health, social structure, symbolic systems, technological change, theories of illness and wellness, humoral medicine in Latin America, and worldview. The quantity, quality, and long-term value of his scholarly work led to his election to the National Academy of Sciences in 1976. Virtually all of his major publications have been reprinted and/or translated. Provenance from the executor of Foster's library laid in.Condition:Some occasional pencil marginalia by Foster. Foster's date of acquired on front paste down of volume one. Some rubbing to extremities else a very good set.

        THANK YOU, JEEVES

Herbert Jenkins Ltd. [], 1934. Herbert Jenkins Ltd. [], 1934. First edition. Grey cloth lettered in red in a pictorial dustwrapper. A near fine copy in a very good dustwrapper, which shows a little fraying to the spine ends and a couple of closed tears with associated creasing. The first full length novel concerning Jeeves and Wooster, the previous books being a series of self contained stories (albeit often connected). It may be this change of genre or the fact it is one of two Jeeves books published in 1934 (Right Ho, Jeeves being the other), which lead the publishers to show caution with the first edition. Certainly it has been among the most infrequently encountered Jeeves titles we have seen. McIlvaine A51a
