Thoughts Upon Hunting Kit in a Series of Nine Letters to a Friend

Millbrook: Privately Printed for the author [by The Derrydale Press], 1934. First Edition. No. 84 of 500 copies. Illustrated with photographs, and a drawing by the author. 1 vols. 12mo. In the deluxe binding of full straight grain morocco with gilt intaglio medallion of a hunt button on upper cover. Head and foot of spine frayed, else fine, in brown morocco-backed folding case. RARE. First Edition. No. 84 of 500 copies. Illustrated with photographs, and a drawing by the author. 1 vols. 12mo. This is an almost unprocurable Derrydale Press title. The book appeared in two bindings: red paper boards with a printed white label, and in full leather with gilt medallion on upper cover. Both are rare, and, although the number in the deluxe leather binding is not known, it may be presumed to be rarer than those in boards. Indeed, aside from its intrinsic rarity (Siegel states that "upon Connett's death, a large carton of these were taken to the dump..."), it is the only presentation copy we have ever seen. The inscription (on the colophon) reads: "To The Spitteriges, With many remembrances from the author. Eugene S. Reynal.".

Substantial collection of editor John Ferrone's photocopies of manuscripts and typescripts of The Diary of Anaïs Nin, including expurgated material

Various places, 1934. Published as The Early Diary of Anaïs Nin, 1923-1927 (vols. 3 & 4), New York: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich [1983] and [1985]. Upwards of approximately 2,000 pages, some with publisher's ms. annotations and indications for deletion. 4to. Contained in 12 orange binders with paper labels on upper covers reading "Volume 19", through "Volume 30"; with separate manila folder captioned in pencil, "Unpublished Diary deletions" (approximately 200 pages) which are heavily marked by the publisher. Digital output typescript of In Search of Lost Joy. Overall, very good condition. 4to. The Suppressed Passages from Her Diary. The monumental task of publishing the Diary of Anais Nin - who began keeping a journal from the age of 11 until her death in 1977 - fell to the New York publisher Harcourt, Brace, Jovanovich. In 1966, HBJ began publishing the so-called "expurgated" editions, beginning with Volume I (1931-1934), which covered the critical period when Anaïs Nin was living just outside of Paris with her husband, banker Hugh Parker Guiler, during which time she began her relationship with Henry Miller and Miller' wife, June, underwent psychoanalysis, and began her study of D.H. Lawrence. Volume I was greatly expurgated, and the extent to which it was so may be seen in the manila folder herein, containing the "Unpublished Diary deletions" carefully preserved of John Ferrone, HBJ's editor. These deleted passages also contain autograph (not photocopied) corrections, presumably in Ferrone's hand - and as such constitute the earliest direct evidence of the publisher's intentions for this portion of Nin's diary. It wasn't until 1986 that HBJ published this portion of the unexpurgated diary as HENRY AND JUNE. The bulk of the other material, all to be found in the orange binders, consists of the Diary of the Early Years, also published in the 1980s by HBJ. A collection which tells an important part of the publication history of a landmark work in the history of women's literature.

        VEILS OF FEAR

Philip Allan & Co., Ltd [1934], London - Octavo, [1-2] [1-4] 5 [6] 7-228 [229-237; publishers catalog, 238; blank], original blue cloth, spine panel stamped in black. Loose sequel to Meik's Devil's Drum. This is a episodic occult horror thriller, which features the same characters from that previous book. Associated with Philip Allan's popular "Creeps" series. Ashley, Who's Who in Horror and Fantasy Fiction, p. 130. Bleiler, The Guide to Supernatural Fiction #1141. A very good plus copy, text block shows some age darkening, spine ends show some fade spots in a very good dust jacket, shallow chips to upper corners, some rubbing to folds, some loss to spine ends, tape ghost to lower spine panel and upper rear panel, closed tear to rear panel. The front panel illustration is nice and bright, a reasonable example of a book not common in dust jacket. (11921) [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Very minor signs of use, but overall a fine copy of a delightful children's A.B.C., and one of the scarcest Babar books.         Murder on the Orient Express.

      - London: Collins for the Crime Club, 1934. Sm. 8vo, 254 (4, ads.)pp. Full burgundy hardgrain morocco, backstrip gilt, dark green labels, original orange cover and backstrip bound in. Very attractive modern binding. First edition of this famous classic featuring the immortal Hercule Poirot. It was one of ChristieÕs most successful books; the novel was adapted into a highly successful feature film, released in 1974 and starring Albert Finney alongside Sean Connery, Lauren Bacall, John Gielgud, Vanessa Redgrave, Ingrid Bergman and other big name stars. As Wikipedia notes: Dame Agatha Mary Clarissa Christie, DBE (nee Miller; 15 September 1890 Ð 12 January 1976) was an English crime novelist, short story writer, and playwright. She also wrote six romances under the name Mary Westmacott, but she is best known for the 66 detective novels and 14 short story collections she wrote under her own name, most of which revolve around the investigations of such characters as Hercule Poirot, Miss Jane Marple, Mr Satterthwaite, and Tommy and Tuppence. She also wrote the world's longest-running play, The Mousetrap.Born into a wealthy upper-middle-class family in Torquay, Devon, Christie served in a hospital during the First World War, before marrying and starting a family in London. She was initially unsuccessful at getting her work published; but in 1920 The Bodley Head press published her novel The Mysterious Affair at Styles, featuring the character of Poirot. This launched her literary career. The Guinness Book of World Records lists Christie as the best-selling novelist of all time. Her novels have sold roughly 2 billion copies, and her estate claims that her works come third in the rankings of the world's most-widely published books,[2] behind Shakespeare's works and the Bible. According to Index Translationum, Christie is the most-translated individual author Ð having been translated into at least 103 languages. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Japanese Carts

1934. [JAPANESE CARTS]. UENO, Atsugui. Go shoguruma. [Royal Imperial Cars]. Suite of 12 plates of Imperial carts, each with leaf of descriptive text, printed in gold and colour, all within fan-shaped images. Oblong folio, 270 x 390 mm, bound accordion style in boards, orange glazed wrapper on upper cover bearing tassels and leaves. Kyoto, 1934. |~||~||~||~||~| A beautiful suite of decorative plates, superbly printed in gold and colour, illustrating Imperial Carts for use of the Royal Family. Each highly stylized image is fan-shaped; the leaves of descriptive text are embossed with vines, leaves and so forth. Although Atsugi Ueno is not listed in Laurence Roberts' Dictionary of Japanese Artists, he was clearly an artist of considerable abilities: each cart, or symbol of a cart (perhaps only a single-spoke wheel) is delicately placed among or behind a group of flowers or vines. This is the most elegant volume of Japanese Imperial Carts known to us; that this work contains designs for Japanese fans further enhances its appeal. "Various fan designs that are found today in the world originated in ancient Japan. It was not until modern times that they found their way to Europe through the Chinese continent. In Japan, fans were called 'suehiro,' or wide-bottom, and have long been a symbol of prosperity. Even today, fans are indispensable small items and treasured in ceremonies and festivals as well as in traditional Japanese dancing. Fans are made primarily of materials produced in Japan: bamboo, paper and silk. The size and shape of fans are varied, and this variety adds to the lives of the Japanese regardless of the season. Combining straight lines and curves, the unique spatial structure of the Japanese fans have been rediscovered artistically and internationally, and by the young" (The Fan of Japan Exhibition, Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi Trust Company, New York, 1996).

Prien - Kaiserslautern u.a., -, 1934 - 1960.. .

Original issue for which it was not derived great papers, one of the copies of the Press. Exceptional autograph dedication signed by the author André Malraux: "André Malraux with confidence and hope André Breton.". Surprising encounter between two writers to "profoundly dissimilar nature." Yet the fate of Malraux and Breton have crossed at least twice. The first in 1924, while Malraux, young author almost unknown, was arrested for Angkor case. Breton collects Clara Malraux home and offers her help to free Malraux he pleads the case in "Literary News": "" We learn from the newspapers that the young author of Paper Moon (...) has "guilty" of rape on the person of two or three dancers stone, almost unknown in a nearby temple of Angkor. Who really cares about] a conservation in their countries of origin, these works of yesteryear? I do not want to know, but I can not think without emotion that (...) André Malraux (...) will be prevented (...) realize, who knows, a higher work than that he threatened "It was in 1934 that the two men find themselves following the riots of February 6. André Malraux sign the" Call to the fight "and" Survey Unit of Action "written by Breton against the" real fascist threat that emerged in France on February 6. "This position will lead to the creation of the" Vigilance Committee of Antifascist Intellectuals "which join the two writers. This shared commitment born a discreet but lasting friendship. Breton and include several time Malraux's speech to the Congress of Soviet Writers. After the war, it will twice praise Malraux calling it "one of the best qualified minds of our time." Precious dedication referring to their common and surreal premonition of the title of the next great novel Malraux antifascist fight. Gallimard Paris 1934 12x19cm broché
