Constable & Co, London 1934 - 8vo. cloth, top edge gilt, dust jacket. xii, 400 pages. First edition. A classic piece of literary detective work in which the authors expose Thomas J. Wise as a forger by their work in type specimens, paper and study of the text of various 19th century pamphlets. A landmark book in the history of literary forgery. This copy has been inscribed by both authors on the free endpaper. Very rare to find a copy signed by both authors. Carter has written in his typical red ink "Unread, I notice, but I appreciate the goodwill. John Carter, 7 dec 70" and Pollard has added in blue ink beneath Carter's inscription "Signature authenicated by Graham Pollard, 29 Nov. 1973."         [Photo Album]: Privelisti Carpatine (Carpathian Views)

Romania. 1934. Oblong quarto. Full leather photo album measuring 10" x 12" with "Privelisti Carpatine" stamped in gilt on the front board. Contains 41 sepia toned photographs most measuring 5" x 7", some larger, all captioned in Romanian, and affixed to stiff grey album pages. The firast two pages have been removed and there is some curling to the pages, else near fine. A photo album from 1934 of a trip to the Carpathian Mountains in Romania. The scenes depict the beautiful landscape of Romania with views of the various mountain ranges that encompass the Carpathian mountain range including one of a sheep herder with his flock, another of a group of skiers, and some traditional homes beautifully captioned in handwritten Romanian. Dracula can not be seen but surely that's because you can not capture him on film or in a mirror, that being said we presume he was among the skiers. An exquisite album of mountain landscapes from the infamous Carpathians. .

Cocos Island Sailfish Club", a finely executed decorative map, commemorating FDR and the Presidential staff's catch of sailfish on board the U. S.S. Houston, during one of the early Presidential cruises in the Pacific Ocean

N.p. [U.S.S. Houston?], n.d. [ca. 1934-5] - A remarkably fine memento of one of President Franklin D. Roosevelt's first visits to the Cocos Islands in the summer of 1934 or the autumn of 1935. In July 1934, Roosevelt sailed aboard the Houston through the Panama Canal (11 July), the first President to do so, and stopped at Cocos Island on his way to Hawaii and Portland, Oregon. In October 1935, President Roosevelt embarked on the Houston in Seattle and sailed to the Cerros Islands, Magdalena Bay, Cocos Islands, and Charleston, S.C. Roosevelt would make four more trips to the Cocos Islands, again on the U.S.S. Houston in August 1938 (see pp. 16-18 of the printed Log of the Cruise, which gives an account of fishing for sailfish), and twice in 1940 aboard the U.S.S. Tuscaloosa. The names of the club members include Roosevelt's bodyguard, Gus Gennerich, and his secretary Franklin B. Adams, as well as "Pa" Watson (one of the chroniclers of the 1938 trip), and naval aides Callaghan and McIntyre (ROOSEVELT, FRANKLIN D) 15-1/2 x 21 inches. Pencil on paper, showing a map of Cocos Island, identifying landmarks, with a list of the Members of the "Club" ("Franklin D. Roosevelt, Ross T. McIntyre, Edwin M. Watson, Daniel J. Callaghan, Gus Gennerich, Frederick B. Adams, Basil O'Connor"), two large leaping sailfish enclosing the caption, all surrounded by a decorative border of small tropical fish. Artist unknown; docketed in pencil on verso "H.D. Alexandra, Navy Recruiting Bureau, New York City". A few small pinholes, some edgewear and marginal abrasions, one marginal tear mended on verso, very good condition overall

        A Backward Glance

New York & London: D. Appleton-Century Company,, 1934. Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to spine and upper board gilt. Bookplate of author and historian Louis Auchincloss and small slip to front pastedown. Very lightly rubbed at extremities, front hinge cracked and upper board loose, pencilled notes to rear endpapers. A very good copy. First edition, first impression. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "Petit voyage préhistorique pour mon ami St. André, E. W. Mai 1934". Wharton's biographer R. W. B. Lewis writes that Alfred de St. Andre was a member of Wharton's French circle who, though he had no particular vocation, was "always good company… and was a valued guide to little-known parts of Paris." A manuscript note on the pastedown records that, in a letter to art historian Bernard Berenson, Wharton writes that "poor St. A explains for the 100th time why he can't have a telephone and how all his friends try to avoid seeing him".

Los Angeles: Columbia Pictures, 1934. First Edition. Fine. This is an ORIGINAL fully restored, linenbacked three-sheet (41" x 81") theatrical movie poster for "THE FIGHTING RANGER" starring Buck Jones, Dorothy Revier, Frank Rice, Bradley Page and Ward Bond. Buck Jones posters from the 1930's are among the most colorful, spectacular and collectible of all the Western movie posters. This particular three-sheet is thought by many to be the most unique Buck Jones poster of them all. The colors and composition, including the positioning of Buck Jones and Dorothy Revier, make it particularly attractive and unlike any other Western poster of the period. It has become increasingly scarce. The poster was originally linenbacked with a few small defects (some crossfold paper loss, pin holes and creases along the edges), but has since been restored completely by the artisans of Studio Conservation of Vista California and is now in beautiful condition. Free shipping to any United States address.

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer/Cosmopolitan, N.P. (but Printed in U.S.A.) 1934 - About Fine, with two old, very faint creases on the lower corner tips. An original advertising herald for the 1934 film "The Thin Man," directed by W.S. Van Dyke and starring William Powell, Myrna Loy, and Maureen O'Sullivan. Closed, the item measures 7 x 6 inches; open, it measures 7 x 11 inches. A lovely and extremely rare ephemeral item from one of the most iconic adaptations of Hammett's work, and while these heralds were mass-produced, they were most likely a throw-away item.
