Chapman & Hall 1934 - First edition. Original marbled cloth in pictorial dustwrapper. A near fine copy in a very good dustwrapper, which is a little tanned to the spine with some fraying to the spine ends and corners and the beginnings of a closed tear to the rear joint. Frontispiece sketch of Hetton Abbey. Waugh's fourth novel and seen as one of his scarcest. Critically regarded as the high point of Waugh's literary output and as one of the great novels of the twentieth century. Mainly written in Morocco, the narrative seems to have come to Waugh quite easily, as he wrote to Katherine Asquith, "I peg away at the novel which seems to be faultless of its kind . Comic English character parts too easy when one gets be thirty." However, later he wrote "I have just killed a little boy at a lawn meet and made his mother commit adultery . so perhaps you won't like it after all." The title went through several iterations before purloining the phrase from T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land; "I will show you fear in a handful of dust." [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Paul Klee: handzeichnungen, 1921-1930

Postdam and Berlin: Müller & I. Kiepenheuer Verlag, 1934. First edition. Number 30 of 525 from the confiscated first edition. Smooth yellow cloth boards (29 cm.), titled and illustrated in black, reproducing an original illustration from Klee on front panel. Some bubbling to cloth and general scuffing to boards. Contents feature 30 pages of text, ten pages of which represent the first catalogue of Klee's works by Grohmann, followed by 72 plates, which are printed on thick cardstock with perforated edges, presumably to afford easy framing of the images. This set complete. With ink ownership inscription, of Mary Wigman, to front endpaper, accompanied by a 1934 pencil inscription from Grohmann to Wigman. Accompanied by four tobacco cards of Wigman (62 x 52 mm.), from the series Der Künstlerische Tanz, Gruppe 1, Tänzer von Weltruf; as photographed by Charlotte Rudolph. With Paul Klee having already abandoned the German climate for his native Switzerland in late 1933, it seemed somewhat dubious for art critic Will Grohmann to plan the publication of a three volume catalogue raisonné for the German public. Nonetheless, in a letter to Klee, Grohmann confirmed that the first of those volumesbeing the one present herewas to appear in October 1934. By the Spring of 1935, the remainder of the edition would be confiscated by Nazi officials; with the publication of the other two volumes placed indefinitely on hold. This particular association copy adds a fascinating twist to the story. Before the edition was confiscated, one of its recipients was the innovative choreographer, and alleged Nazi sympathizer, Mary Wigman, a friend of Grohmann's from Dresden, who is here presented with a nostalgic inscription from Grohman: In alter treu u. freundschaft." Of the few annotations to the textpossibly made by Wigman herself, or possibly by Grohmannis a mark next to number 76 in Grohmann's catalogue, pointing to Klee's Drei Hexen from 1927: a work which appears to have built upon the theme of Wigman's own Hexentranz, which premiered a year earlier, in 1926.

        Why Not Try God?

New York: H. C. Kinsey & Company, Inc, 1934. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Signed. Publisher's blue paper over boards, white title label and white spine cloth. First edition. A wonderful association copy, inscribed by Mary Pickford to Barrett C. Kiesling, who was the head of publicity at MGM, dated 1934-- the year her last filmed role was released. Tipped in is a typed letter dated March 8, 1930, in which she invites him to a luncheon at her studio bungalow to discuss the Motion Picture Relief Fund she had created, which continues today as the MPTF. Additionally laid in is a typed menu detailing luncheon offerings, signed in pencil by Pickford on the blank verso, dated March 13, 1930. Very Good. Spine cloth lightly worn at the ends, light splits started at joints, fading to edges of boards, lacking the dust jacket. A wonderful association between America's sweetheart and an influential studio publicity executive, detailing a Hollywood luncheon in 1930.

Tulipunkt : IX. kogu värsse (The Focus : 9th Verses Collection)

Tallinn 1934 - Estonian language. Octavo 13 x 17 cm. Weight 300 gr. Wrappers, 159 pp. The book is in Fine condition without any visible defects, losses, remarks and stains. Light foxing spots on the original publishing soft cover, which is preserved under possessory leather binding; internally few occasional fingerprints, otherwise perfect. The book is a true bibliographic rarity by several reasons. Firstly, it is extremely rare and seldom seen publication. Secondary, it is a brilliant example of leftist poetry by prominent Estonian avant-garde poet Johannes Vares-Barbarus (1890–1946). Verses collection reveal some distancing from author's earlier sensuous poems and futurist urban depictions, and took more realistic turn. Futurism escalated into class struggle, antibourgeois attitudes and radical socialist views became increasingly evident in his poetry. Although, verses still contain plenty of urban references, but with its subtle political line, motifs of power and leadership. The focus is on a sense of liberation, produced by depicting the working masses. Thirdly, amazing constructivist publishing cover in red-and-white and experimental typography integrated into the text are considered an excellent representation of avant-garde trend in book design, which was created by famous artist Jaan Vahtra (1882-1947). He was one of the most bright talents of Estonian modern art, a founding member of the Estonian Art Group of Cubism and Constructivism. Very important is his creative work of graphic art in journalism and book design. Vahtra mostly created cover designs, which retained the constructivist manner, his works have strong features, retaining a firm composition and legibility of font. He cleansed the cover design of excessive details and over-crowding. Fourthly, copy is inscribed and signed by the author on the fly-leaf: "Nigol Andresenile, luulemeelses kaasvõitluses ja sõpruses. Barbarus. 1.XI.34." (To Nigol Andresen, poetic fellow fighter and friend. Barbarus. Nov 1, 1934). Nigol Andresen (1899-1985) (known under the pen name Ormi Arp) was not only a well-known Communist leader, Barbarus' like-minded and fellow-fighter, but also avant-garde poet, leftist writer and gifted literary critic. Fifthly, possessory leather binding was manufactured upon N. Andresen special order in the second half of the 1940s on the Eduard Taska bookbinding workshop equipment by one of its masters, when Taska company was nationalized but continued to work. Eduard Taska (1890 - 1942) has been considered the founder of contemporary Estonian leather art. In 1923 he established workshop for leatherwork of his own name. Other well-known artists designed the products of his workshop as well. These leather bindings and leather products were technically perfect and in demand also elsewhere in Europe. Taska started in leather design with ethnographical ornament and ended up in stylish geometrical surface design .He won the Grand Prix for his bookbindings in the world exhibition in Paris in 1937.         Tender is the Night

New York: Scribner's, 1934 Original pictorial wrappers made by the publisher from the dust jacket. Some restoration to rear wrapper affecting the right margin of the jacket copy, marginal stain to p. 27, light spotting to endpapers, else very good. FIRST EDITION, the extremely rare advance issue in wrappers. Fitzgerald considered Tender is the Night, his fourth and final novel, to be his masterpiece, surpassing The Great Gatsby. Following an initially lukewarm reception, the novel's reputation has steadily risen. Ernest Hemingway later observed that "Tender is the Night gets better and better." The novel is now acclaimed as one of the great works of modern American literature. The author's first novel in nine years, following The Great Gatsby, Tender is the Night tells the story of the rise and fall of a glamorous couple, the psychiatrist Dick Diver and his wife Nicole, who is one of his patients. At the time Joyce's wife Zelda was hospitalized for schizophrenia. The advance issue of Tender is the Night is one of the great Fitzgerald rarities Of Fitzgerald's eight novels, this is the only one for which advance copies were issued. "They are complete texts - not dummies - and were probably intended for use as review copies and salesman's copies. The Scribner's records indicate that five hundred copies were ordered, but it is unlikely that that many copies were distributed because it is so rare: three institutional copies have been located [Virginia, Pierpont Morgan, and the Bruccoli Collection at the University of South Carolina] . ... These are the most collectible copies of Tender is the Night in terms of priority and rarity" (Bruccoli and Baughman, F. Scott Fitzgerald in the Marketplace). The book has been the subject of stage, screen, theater, television, and ballet adaptations. Very rare: leading Fitzgerald bibliographer and collector Matthew Bruccoli located only three copies. Only two examples appear in the auction records of the past fifty years. Provenance: Henry Barnard Strong, with bookplate. Strong was member of the Yale class of 1922 and a member of Skull & Bones. Gerald Murphy, the model for Dick Diver in Tender is the Night, was likewise a Skull & Bones man.

London: Macmillan, , 1934. Octavo. Original pale blue paper wrappers printed in dark blue. Housed in a green cloth solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. An excellent copy with slight marginal toning to the wrappers. First and only edition of Golding's first published work, inscribed by Golding's mother, Mildred, to the household of her brother, Golding's uncle: "To 'Karenza' from M.G. 1934". The work was published with the help of Golding's friend Adam Bittleston shortly after leaving Oxford and evidently distributed among relatives by his proud mother. Laid-in with the book is a letter from Macmillan to Brian Curnoe (a direct descendant of Golding's uncle) confirming the number of copies of Poems issued (1,000) and commenting ruefully that "when he [Golding] offered us fiction after the war, we declined it!" "Although in later life [Golding] was dismissive of this volume, and of his abilities as a poet, the collection anticipates some of the concerns that became central to his fiction" (ODNB).

        Tender is the Night

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1934. First edition. Near Fine. A sharp, Near Fine copy of Fitzgerald's great final novel. A light smudge on the front board and a small bookplate on the front paste-down, otherwise remarkably clean and fresh. Becoming increasingly scarce in this condition. Lacking the dust jacket. A meditation on marriage, success and the emotional toll mental health problems can take on a family. Many of these themes echo from Fitzgerald's personal troubles with his wife, Zelda, later in life. Printed in a relatively small print run, so attractive copies are uncommon. Near Fine.

Faint spotting to free endpapers. An excellent copy in the jacket with some light spotting, minor nicks at the ends of the toned spine panel, and marks to the lower panel. First edition, first impression, presentation copy of Thomas's first book, inscribed by the poet on the front free endpaper, "To Nora from Dylan, March 1938". The recipient was Nora Summers (1892–1948), an artist and the lover of Yvonne Macnamara, Thomas's mother-in-law. Nora had studied at the Bristol School of Art and then the Slade in London, and married fellow artist Gerald Summers in 1912. In 1914 she became close to the family of painter Augustus John, and through him Yvonne and the Macnamara children, with whom she and Gerald lived communally for a few years. Yvonne and Nora's relationship was intense, and Caitlin later remembered Nora as "the father figure of our girlhood and an evil one", but the two fiery women did see eye-to-eye about art, with Caitlin acting as a model for Nora's burgeoning photographic hobby. Nora also enjoyed entertaining the young artistic friends of the Macnamaras, including Dylan Thomas, and she took a number of now-iconic photographs of the poet, including the image of Thomas smoking, and the photograph of the poet and his wife at Brown's Hotel in 1938. 18 poems was Thomas's first book, published in an edition of only 500 copies shortly after his 20th birthday, with 250 sets of sheets bound and sold a year after the first issue. This is one of the second issue copies with the Parton Press advertisement tipped-in between the half-title and title. Both issues are rare today, particularly so in the dust jacket and with presentation inscription. Hayward 343. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Living My Life [One-Volume Edition] - Inscribed

New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1934. First Edition Thus. Hardcover. First one-volume edition of Goldman's monumental autobiography, an undisputed high-spot of women's writing and one of a few truly important 20th-century radical memoirs. Goldman was furious with Knopf for issuing the book in two volumes at the height of an economic depression, and considered the publication price of $7.50 to be exhorbitant. The book indeed sold poorly, despite strong reviews, and it has never been common. Knopf issued the one-volume edition in 1934. On February 1 the same year, after 15 years in exile, Goldman was re-admitted to the United States for a brief 90 day period, during which she lectured extensively. A significant copy, warmly inscribed on May Day, 1934, on the eve of her deportation from the U.S. to Stella Estall of Montreal, who organized and prepared a farewell dinner for Goldman and friends. "For Emma Goldman, deportation and exile were harsh punishments. Friends reported that just before and immediately after her tour, Goldman often sat at the Canadian border, looking longingly across to the United States, tears streaming down her face" ( Octavo (22.5cm); black cloth, with titles stamped in red on spine and front panel; red topstain; x, 994, xxiiipp, followed by 7 leaves of half-tone plates. Signed by Goldman on the front endpaper, and lengthily inscribed by her on the second blank: "To Stella Estall / With deepest appreciation for your interest and your splendid efforts in behalf of the farewell dinner. / Cordially, Emma Goldman / Montreal. May First 1934." Forward lean, covers heavily rubbed, with occasional exposure to corners and lower board edges; both hinges cracked, though still holding; front endpaper heavily dust-soiled, with small chip to upper right corner of same; rear cover damp-stained, affecting rear endpaper and several terminal leaves; no better than Fair, but a nice association copy.
