[Photo Album]: Service Album Fort Sherman (American servicemen in the Philippines and Canal Zone)

1934. Near Fine. Oblong small quarto. Rawhide-tied hand painted limp suede wrappers. Album of 76 gelatin silver images. Various sizes. Album is near fine, images are mostly near fine or better, a few taped in with some offsetting or staining. Autographs pages precede the images and include several names, addresses, and comments, all dated in 1934. The first half of the images are of an American soldier stationed in the Philippines, and the images depict sailors and ships en route from the Panama Canal Zone (where Fort Sherman was located), with several images of visits to native villages and with several images of the indigenous people. The remaining half of the images follow the same soldier back to the Canal Zone, where he seems perhaps to have been a band member, and show images of soldiers in uniform, in baseball uniforms, hunting with shotguns, and one of an African-American sergeant in uniform fishing on a riverbank with a small child, and then ends with several homefront images: family, hunting, a crashed car, etc. A modest but engaging album in the period between the two World Wars.

Archive of original designs for department store display fixtures

NY: Lansha Studios, 1934. Porter, Vernon C.. This collection contains 128 individual pencil designs and 51 photographs of manufactured fixtures used to create department store window and floor displays. The bulk of the designs were made for Lansha Studios, a New York firm established by Lionel Schacht and Eugene P. Lanfranchi as part of Schacht Lanfranchi Inc., which specialized in designing and manufacturing wrought iron furniture and decorations. Schacht was a prolific inventor, who achieved commercial success with a new, shatter-resistant glass door designed for department stores. Lafranchi was a well-known designer of wrought iron, who operated multiple studios in the United States, including in New York and Palm Beach, Florida. Palm Beach was experiencing a building boom in the 1920s, and Lafranchi's work appeared in many of the new homes under construction, as well as in buildings like the Palm Beach Bath & Tennis Club. Perhaps due to Schacht's connections with department stores, Lansha Studios developed a market for designing and manufacturing the pieces used to showcase items in department store window and floor displays. These were the base structures on which jewelry was draped or hats were hung. They needed to be beautiful and stylish, while not detracting from the goods they were displaying. The designs in the collection reflect this balance, embracing a variety of styles, from Art Deco and Art Nouveau to Greek Revival and even Arts & Crafts. The stands, shelves, hangers, and tables were developed in coordinating lines to allow for a more cohesive window display, and they were specially developed to show off a number of popular consumer goods, including jewelry, gloves, hats, ties, belts, shoes, and more. The fixtures were made from shiny, reflective materials to draw attention and dazzle the eye, most prominently aluminum, brass, black glass, and mirrors, though a few featured wood surfaces for warmth. Department stores, such as Lord & Taylor, Avedon's Fifth Avenue, and Best & Co, used individual or grouped pieces to develop and enhance their window displays, and the collection includes photographs of displays at the former two stores utilizing Lansha fixtures. Three designs, two for belt stands and one for a tie stand, are labeled "Best & Co. N.Y.C.", suggesting that they were created specifically for the company. The bulk of the original designs in the collection were executed on thin, onion-skin paper, some on folio-sized sheets that have been folded, and some on smaller sheets that have been grouped and pasted to cardstock measuring 19 inches wide by 12 inches tall. Each design bears an item number, and most have additional information written in the margins, such as dimensions, materials, price, and/or customizations available. A few of the drawings are accented with colored pencil, and several cardstock sheets have sketches in the margins or on the back. Fifteen of the drawings are stamped in purple by Lansha Studios, perhaps indicating that these designs were approved for production. Three blueprints of bases for stands of different types are also marked by Lansha Studios. Forty-eight black & white photographs show manufactured examples of the fixtures and, with the exception of three prints that are smaller than the others, are not represented in the original designs. The majority of the photographs are stamped in purple on the back with the same Lansha Studios mark described above, and also bear item numbers and descriptive information, suggesting that the photographs were used for ordering purposes. Also contained in the collection are sketched logo designs for 1 Fifth Avenue and the Eighth Street Playhouse. Designed in 1927, 1 Fifth Avenue was one of the first Art Deco skyscrapers in Manhattan, with commercial space at street level and residences above. The three pages of logo designs for the building range from the very stylized to traditional, and some indicate that an art gallery was in the commercial space at the time. The Eighth Street Playhouse, located just down the street from 1 Fifth Avenue, was established in 1929 as the Film Guild Playhouse. It was originally built to accomodate Symon Gould's Film Guild and was designed by "architect Frederick Kiesler to resemble the bellows-like interior of a still camera" (MacDonald). The cinema was renamed the Eighth Street Playhouse in 1930. A rough sketch of the cinema's distinctive interior is on the back of one of the pages, and the designs include variations on a repeating image for a generic logo and a dated drawing, possibly for an event poster. Another small group of drawings appear to be sample designs for fixtures that were not executed under the auspices of Lansha Studios, as they do not have item numbers, dimensions, or notations included with the bulk of the other designs. A further three folio-sized sheets show rough sketches for what appears to be a heated ottoman that could be raised or lowered electronically. A final blueprint for an electric master clock gives a clue as to the artist behind the designs in this collection. The blueprint is dated October 1, 1934 and indicates that a patent for the clock was applied for by V. C. Porter. This is most likely Vernon Carroll Porter (1896-1982), who was a designer and artist best known for founding the Washington Square Outdoor Art Exhibit in 1931, with the objective of helping artists during the Great Depression. Porter worked as a freelance designer in New York City from 1925 to 1932, and, while none of the designs in the collection are signed, the back of one of the cardstock sheets bears what looks like Porter's monogram and address. General wear to drawings and photographs, with a few onion-skin pages torn at margins. Otherwise a fine archive of designs reflecting the confluence of style trends found in New York department stores in the 1920s and 30s.

        A HANDFUL OF DUST

Chapman & Hall 1934 - First edition. Original marbled cloth in pictorial dustwrapper. A near fine copy in a very good dustwrapper, which is a little tanned to the spine with some fraying to the spine ends and corners and the beginnings of a closed tear to the rear joint. Frontispiece sketch of Hetton Abbey. Waugh's fourth novel and seen as one of his scarcest. Critically regarded as the high point of Waugh's literary output and as one of the great novels of the twentieth century. Mainly written in Morocco, the narrative seems to have come to Waugh quite easily, as he wrote to Katherine Asquith, "I peg away at the novel which seems to be faultless of its kind . Comic English character parts too easy when one gets be thirty." However, later he wrote "I have just killed a little boy at a lawn meet and made his mother commit adultery . so perhaps you won't like it after all." The title went through several iterations before purloining the phrase from T.S. Eliot's The Waste Land; "I will show you fear in a handful of dust." [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Tender is the Night

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons 1934 - Illustrations by Edward Shenton. First edition, first printing, with Scribner's "A" present on copyright page (later printings omitted this publisher's code). Publisher's dark green cloth, ruled in blind and lettered in gilt, with front flap and rear panel of dust jacket tipped in to front endpapers, and with front panel of dust jacket tipped in to first free leaf. A very good copy with some light wear to extremities and very faint soiling to rear board, front hinge cracked but holding, pages age-toned and with some scattered creasing from use. Overall an attractive copy with the original dust jacket uniquely preserved. Bruccoli A14.I.a. Tender is the Night is Fitzgerald's last completed novel, based on the lives of American ex-patriots living in Paris and the French Riviera. The book is a complicated tale of love and lust, and gives reader's a glimpse into the characters' stories through a series of flashbacks scattered throughout the chronological plotline. Like many of Fitzgerald's works, Tender is the Night is semi-autobiographical in nature, with the author's friends serving as models for characters, including Pablo Picasso, the Cole Porters, and socialites Sara and Gerald Murphy, to whom the book is dedicated. Interestingly, Fitzgerald took the title "Tender is the Night" from a line in John Keats' poem "Ode to a Nightingale." [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Paul Klee: handzeichnungen, 1921-1930

Postdam and Berlin: Müller & I. Kiepenheuer Verlag, 1934. First edition. Number 30 of 525 from the confiscated first edition. Smooth yellow cloth boards (29 cm.), titled and illustrated in black, reproducing an original illustration from Klee on front panel. Some bubbling to cloth and general scuffing to boards. Contents feature 30 pages of text, ten pages of which represent the first catalogue of Klee's works by Grohmann, followed by 72 plates, which are printed on thick cardstock with perforated edges, presumably to afford easy framing of the images. This set complete. With ink ownership inscription, of Mary Wigman, to front endpaper, accompanied by a 1934 pencil inscription from Grohmann to Wigman. Accompanied by four tobacco cards of Wigman (62 x 52 mm.), from the series Der Künstlerische Tanz, Gruppe 1, Tänzer von Weltruf; as photographed by Charlotte Rudolph. With Paul Klee having already abandoned the German climate for his native Switzerland in late 1933, it seemed somewhat dubious for art critic Will Grohmann to plan the publication of a three volume catalogue raisonné for the German public. Nonetheless, in a letter to Klee, Grohmann confirmed that the first of those volumesbeing the one present herewas to appear in October 1934. By the Spring of 1935, the remainder of the edition would be confiscated by Nazi officials; with the publication of the other two volumes placed indefinitely on hold. This particular association copy adds a fascinating twist to the story. Before the edition was confiscated, one of its recipients was the innovative choreographer, and alleged Nazi sympathizer, Mary Wigman, a friend of Grohmann's from Dresden, who is here presented with a nostalgic inscription from Grohman: In alter treu u. freundschaft." Of the few annotations to the textpossibly made by Wigman herself, or possibly by Grohmannis a mark next to number 76 in Grohmann's catalogue, pointing to Klee's Drei Hexen from 1927: a work which appears to have built upon the theme of Wigman's own Hexentranz, which premiered a year earlier, in 1926.

Tulipunkt : IX. kogu värsse (The Focus : 9th Verses Collection)

Tallinn 1934 - Estonian language. Octavo 13 x 17 cm. Weight 300 gr. Wrappers, 159 pp. The book is in Fine condition without any visible defects, losses, remarks and stains. Light foxing spots on the original publishing soft cover, which is preserved under possessory leather binding; internally few occasional fingerprints, otherwise perfect. The book is a true bibliographic rarity by several reasons. Firstly, it is extremely rare and seldom seen publication. Secondary, it is a brilliant example of leftist poetry by prominent Estonian avant-garde poet Johannes Vares-Barbarus (1890–1946). Verses collection reveal some distancing from author's earlier sensuous poems and futurist urban depictions, and took more realistic turn. Futurism escalated into class struggle, antibourgeois attitudes and radical socialist views became increasingly evident in his poetry. Although, verses still contain plenty of urban references, but with its subtle political line, motifs of power and leadership. The focus is on a sense of liberation, produced by depicting the working masses. Thirdly, amazing constructivist publishing cover in red-and-white and experimental typography integrated into the text are considered an excellent representation of avant-garde trend in book design, which was created by famous artist Jaan Vahtra (1882-1947). He was one of the most bright talents of Estonian modern art, a founding member of the Estonian Art Group of Cubism and Constructivism. Very important is his creative work of graphic art in journalism and book design. Vahtra mostly created cover designs, which retained the constructivist manner, his works have strong features, retaining a firm composition and legibility of font. He cleansed the cover design of excessive details and over-crowding. Fourthly, copy is inscribed and signed by the author on the fly-leaf: "Nigol Andresenile, luulemeelses kaasvõitluses ja sõpruses. Barbarus. 1.XI.34." (To Nigol Andresen, poetic fellow fighter and friend. Barbarus. Nov 1, 1934). Nigol Andresen (1899-1985) (known under the pen name Ormi Arp) was not only a well-known Communist leader, Barbarus' like-minded and fellow-fighter, but also avant-garde poet, leftist writer and gifted literary critic. Fifthly, possessory leather binding was manufactured upon N. Andresen special order in the second half of the 1940s on the Eduard Taska bookbinding workshop equipment by one of its masters, when Taska company was nationalized but continued to work. Eduard Taska (1890 - 1942) has been considered the founder of contemporary Estonian leather art. In 1923 he established workshop for leatherwork of his own name. Other well-known artists designed the products of his workshop as well. These leather bindings and leather products were technically perfect and in demand also elsewhere in Europe. Taska started in leather design with ethnographical ornament and ended up in stylish geometrical surface design .He won the Grand Prix for his bookbindings in the world exhibition in Paris in 1937.         Tender is the Night

New York: Scribner's, 1934 Original pictorial wrappers made by the publisher from the dust jacket. Some restoration to rear wrapper affecting the right margin of the jacket copy, marginal stain to p. 27, light spotting to endpapers, else very good. FIRST EDITION, the extremely rare advance issue in wrappers. Fitzgerald considered Tender is the Night, his fourth and final novel, to be his masterpiece, surpassing The Great Gatsby. Following an initially lukewarm reception, the novel's reputation has steadily risen. Ernest Hemingway later observed that "Tender is the Night gets better and better." The novel is now acclaimed as one of the great works of modern American literature. The author's first novel in nine years, following The Great Gatsby, Tender is the Night tells the story of the rise and fall of a glamorous couple, the psychiatrist Dick Diver and his wife Nicole, who is one of his patients. At the time Joyce's wife Zelda was hospitalized for schizophrenia. The advance issue of Tender is the Night is one of the great Fitzgerald rarities Of Fitzgerald's eight novels, this is the only one for which advance copies were issued. "They are complete texts - not dummies - and were probably intended for use as review copies and salesman's copies. The Scribner's records indicate that five hundred copies were ordered, but it is unlikely that that many copies were distributed because it is so rare: three institutional copies have been located [Virginia, Pierpont Morgan, and the Bruccoli Collection at the University of South Carolina] . ... These are the most collectible copies of Tender is the Night in terms of priority and rarity" (Bruccoli and Baughman, F. Scott Fitzgerald in the Marketplace). The book has been the subject of stage, screen, theater, television, and ballet adaptations. Very rare: leading Fitzgerald bibliographer and collector Matthew Bruccoli located only three copies. Only two examples appear in the auction records of the past fifty years. Provenance: Henry Barnard Strong, with bookplate. Strong was member of the Yale class of 1922 and a member of Skull & Bones. Gerald Murphy, the model for Dick Diver in Tender is the Night, was likewise a Skull & Bones man.

        Poems

London: Macmillan, , 1934. Octavo. Original pale blue paper wrappers printed in dark blue. Housed in a green cloth solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. An excellent copy with slight marginal toning to the wrappers. First and only edition of Golding's first published work, inscribed by Golding's mother, Mildred, to the household of her brother, Golding's uncle: "To 'Karenza' from M.G. 1934". The work was published with the help of Golding's friend Adam Bittleston shortly after leaving Oxford and evidently distributed among relatives by his proud mother. Laid-in with the book is a letter from Macmillan to Brian Curnoe (a direct descendant of Golding's uncle) confirming the number of copies of Poems issued (1,000) and commenting ruefully that "when he [Golding] offered us fiction after the war, we declined it!" "Although in later life [Golding] was dismissive of this volume, and of his abilities as a poet, the collection anticipates some of the concerns that became central to his fiction" (ODNB).

        Tender is the Night

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1934. First edition. Near Fine. A sharp, Near Fine copy of Fitzgerald's great final novel. A light smudge on the front board and a small bookplate on the front paste-down, otherwise remarkably clean and fresh. Becoming increasingly scarce in this condition. Lacking the dust jacket. A meditation on marriage, success and the emotional toll mental health problems can take on a family. Many of these themes echo from Fitzgerald's personal troubles with his wife, Zelda, later in life. Printed in a relatively small print run, so attractive copies are uncommon. Near Fine.
