Autograph Letter in Japanese calligraphic script to Lou Gehrig, from "the Children of Japan"

[Japan 1934 - Pen and ink on long folded sheet of paper. 36 x 7 in. Presented to Lou Gehrig from the Children of Japan. Gehrig barnstormed around Japan in 1934, joined by Babe Ruth, his manager Connie Mack and a dozen other players. Gehrig brought his wife Eleanor, intending the trip to be the first leg of their delayed honeymoon. Gehrig and Ruth were no longer on speaking terms, and an encounter between Eleanor and Ruth involving prodigious amounts of champagne and caviar in the slugger's cabin further cemented the estrangement. The present letter, written in Japanese and presented to Gehrig from "the children of Japan," is a touching note offering good wishes to Gehrig's mother, with whom he was very close.Translation of the presentation letter:Dear Mr. Gehrig: "I am very happy to learn that you are a good filial son to your Mom. I hear that fact from someone and read about it in a magazine. I like and respect my own Mother very much. So, I would like to give something from Japan to your Mom. I was thinking and thinking, but I could not know what was a good and appropriate gift. After much consideration and thought, I decided it might be good to send your Mom the Nippon Shichi Fukujin or Japan's Seven Lucky Gods. It is close to Christmas - your country. So these Seven Lucky Gods will bring many happinesses to your Mom. This is really a 'tsumaranai mono,' not-so-fine a thing, a trifling thing of no major importance whatsoever. I wish some Japanese person in the US to explain to you about the Seven Lucky Gods. I hope you and your Mom will have a good fortune. I ask the Seven Lucky Gods to bring this gift to you. I am afraid the gift for your Mom is not so fine. Japanese children said to you, Mr. Gehrig, 'yoroshiku' to say 'hello' to you and your Mom. For a long time you have been active and working hard. Please come to Japan again. With your Mom! To have sightseeing. The children of Japan. November."[With:] 3 books on Japanese culture and tourism from Gehrig's library. From the collection of Ruth Martin Quick, a former girlfriend of Gehrig who later became a very close friend of Gehrig's mother, Christina. The collection included Gehrig's jersey worn on the 1934 Japan trip (which sold for over $500,000 at auction in 2011), a signed baseball, and other memorabilia. Provenance: Jeffrey Quick of Whippany, N.J., son of Ruth Martin Quick, a friend of Lou Gehrig Pen and ink on long folded sheet of paper. 36 x 7 in [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

The official first appearance of the beloved cartoon character Donald Duck was in a comic on pg. 37 of this issue of the popular magazine Good Housekeeping.         COUP DE POING DANS L'AFFAIRE: DESSINS ROUGE. No 1

Paris: Association des Ecrivains et des Artistes Revolutionaires, [1934].. [1934].. Fair. - Quarto, 12-1/2 inches high by 9-3/4 inches wide. Softcover, reddish orange wrappers printed in black & white with a full page caricature by Yvette Guilbert on the back cover. The soiled and heavily chipped covers are detached. There are several tears and small pieces out from the edges of the covers. Several tears to the bottom edge of the front cover have been reinforced with archival linen tape from the verso. 20 pages, including the covers, with textual and full-page illustrations by the French caricaturists of the period, including contributions by Antoni, Deupe, Gosse, Andres, Jimmy Oawks, Enri, Schmied, Antek, Pogolotti, Sagette, Yvette Guilbert. The text includes a poem by Jacques Moulin "Dedie a Henri Willemin", the satirical "Petit cours de Medecine pratique" by Le Bon Docteur, "Petites explications pour ceux qui n'auraient par compris les evenements" by Jimmy Oawks, and numerous biting captions serving as titles to the illustrations. The pages are darkened with short tears and chips to the edges. A complete but fragile issue, well worth restoring due to its rarity. <p>Biting political satire about the Stavisky Affair distributed by the left wing Association des Ecrivains et des Artistes Revolutionaires.<p>Founded in March 1932 the Association was a section of the International Union of Revolutionary Writers, which the Comintern had founded a couple of years earlier. The AEAR was a French association founded by communist and communist sympathizing writers in opposition to war and fascism. Henri Cartier Bresson, Luis Bunuel, Max Ernst, Andre Gide, and Man Ray were, for a time, among the notable members of the association.<p>A 1934 financial scandal, The Stavisky Affair was generated by the actions and dealings of the embezzler Alexandre Stavisky (1888-1934). Politicians and investors were swept up in Stavisky's schemes. He sold hundreds of millions of francs worth of false bonds on the city of Bayonne's municipal pawnshops. First charged with fraud in 1927, his trial was postponed over and over again as Stavinsky, known as "Le Beau Sasha", was granted bail 19 times. In the interim, one judge was found decapitated and the affair culminated with Stavisky's "suicide", though speculation persisted that the police killed him. As suggested by "Le Canard enchaine", if it was indeed suicide Stavisky must have had "a long arm". Right wing accusations that the police had killed Stavisky to protect influential people led to the resignation of French premier Camille Chautemps. His successor Daladier, from the Radical-Socialist Party, immediately fired the right-wing Paris Police prefect Jean Chiappe as well as the director of the Comedie Francaise. The new Interior minister, Eugene Frot, announced that demonstrators would be shot. The events led to an attempted right-wing putsch fomented by Action Francaise, the Croix-de-Feu, the Mouvement Franciste and a collection of anti- Semitic, monarchist and fascist groups. The riots resulted in 14 deaths at the hands of the police. Daladier was himself forced to resign and his successor, the conservative Gaston Doumergue formed a coalition cabinet. The affair inspired the 1937 Hollywood movie "Stolen Holiday" starring Claude Rains, and the later 1974 Alain Resnais film "Stavisky" starring Jean-Paul Belmondo.<p>RARE.         Portrait photograph of Pavel Tchelitchew

1934. 1 vols. 9-15/16 x 6-3/4 inches. Atelier stamped on verso: Photograph by Carl Van Vechten/146 Central Park West/Cannot be reproduced without permission. Holograph notations in ink giving the subject of the photograph and the number of the negative. 1 vols. 9-15/16 x 6-3/4 inches. Russian Surrealist Painter, (1898-1957) Tchelitchew was part of the "homosexual wing" of the international avant-garde between the wars, and much of his work is infused with "psychosexual conflict and homoerotic longing," according to Duncan. Tchelitchew and his work were despised by Surrealism's self-appointed pope and author of the Surrealist Manifesto, André Breton, an infamous homophobe. Breton condemned Tchelitchew's art for being too visceral. Indeed, it is an apt description of the artist's representations of the grotesque, inspired by his fascination with circus "freaks," fostered largely in part by his visits to a 14th Street freak show in Manhattan.

        Appointment in Samarra.

Harcourt, Brace and Company, New York 1934 - First edition. Octavo, original cloth. Fine with a contemporary bookplate to the inner gutter, in the first issue dust jacket with a few small closed tears and general wear. A very nice example. One of the great novels of small-town American life, Appointment in Samarra is John O'Hara's crowning achievement. In December 1930, just before Christmas, the Gibbsville, Pennsylvania, social circuit is electrified with parties and dances. At the center of the social elite stand Julian and Caroline English. But in one rash moment born inside a highball glass, Julian breaks with polite society and begins a rapid descent toward self-destruction. Brimming with wealth and privilege, jealousy and infidelity, O'Hara's iconic first novel is an unflinching look at the dark side of the American dream--and a lasting testament to the keen social intelligence if a major American writer. "[O'Hara] is the only American writer to whom America presents itself as a social scene in the way it once presented itself to Henry James, or France to Proust" (Lionel Trilling, The New York Times). Chosen by Modern Library as one of 100 greatest novels of the twentieth century. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Archive of correspondence and documents; from his Campaigns for a California Judgeship

Los Angeles, 1934. Generally fine, with occasional small tears, paper-clip impressions, and pinholes. 60+ pages, with additional printed and handwritten documents, various sizes and formats. Leo Gallagher (1887-1963) was an attorney, activist, and a hero to the labor movement. Starting in the 1920s, he was associated with the IWW and joined the International Labor Defense, the major organization - sponsored by the Communist party - for the defense of political and labor activists. In that capacity, Gallagher defended striking dockworkers and the San Francisco labor leader Tom Mooney. In 1933, he went to Germany with an ILD team to defend the Communist party member who was framed for the burning of the Reichstag. Gallagher entered the political fray several times. This archive documents his first two campaigns, first for a Municipal Court judgeship in Los Angeles, and then for a State Supreme Court seat. It contains typescript press releases, including endorsements from Theodore Dreiser and a variety of unions and activist organizations; draft articles for publication; carbons of correspondence between Gallagher and Upton Sinclair, who was running for Governor at the time, in which they spar over endorsing each other; campaign committee reports; copies of legal filings; original correspondence from prominent supporter, the writer Charles Erskine Scott Wood; transcriptions of radio interview questions and answers, along with planning documents for the interviews; printed and mimeograph campaign literature, flyers, briefings for union members and other supporters; lists of expenditures and original receipts for campaign expenses. The archive was assembled by the journalist, pamphleteer, and activist John M. Weatherwax, who was active in the campaign.

        PHOTOGRAPHS 1920-1934.

Hartford, Connecticut & Paris (New York on verso): James Thrall Soby & Cahiers d'Art, 1934. : , 1934. First edition - Man Ray's first monograph and a landmark photography book (cited in Roth's 101 Books.) INSCRIBED and SIGNED on the title page. 'for Evelyn, who would have been in this if I had known her then. Man Ray, Paris, 1956, Contains 104 images, mostly gravure reproductions of his stunning photographs, but also some rayographs and a portrait of Man Ray by Picasso, done especially for this book. The photographs include striking portraits of James Joyce, Salvador Dali, Matisse, Le Corvusier, DuChamp, Picasso, Braque, Derain, and many other of the leading artists of the century. Texts by Andre Breton, Paul Eluard, Rrose Selavy, and Tristan Tzara precede each section. This is the second issue with the cancel title with the fictitious statement "second edition" (although in this copy the French language version of the title page is facing front and the English is on the verso): the publisher "attempted to generate demand where none existed by suggesting the edition had sold out. copies with the original title page are exceedingly rare" (Roth, 101 Books). Evelyn was Evelyn Dawson, wife - during the 1940's - of the photographer James Fitzsimmons (in 1948 both Fitzsimmons and Man Ray were represented at a photography show at the Los Angeles County Museum), who was friendly with Man Ray and his wife Juliet during the years that they lived in Hollywood, and who herself modeled occasionally for Man Ray. In the original comb-bound stiff color photo-pictorial wrappers. Quarto. Very minor wear to the edges of the cover, some light toning to the back cover, but overall an outstanding copy of an incredible book .

        I, Claudius

The First UK edition published by Arthur Barker in 1934. Black cloth boards with gilt lettering to the spine. Folding chart at rear. The BOOK is in Very Good++ or better condition with very light foxing to prelims and fore-edges. Mild pushing at the spine ends. Mild toning and dustiness to the text block. One small neat previous owner's name to the upper front blank end paper. The book is very tight. A very sharp copy! The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good++ condition with some wear to the extremities, light soiling, a couple of short closed tears and some moderate toning to the spine. Chips to the lower rear edge and lower spine. The iconic John Aldridge designed wrapper artwork presents very well in the removable Brodart archival cover. One of the author's key titles memorably filmed by the BBC in 1976 to critical acclaim and starring Sir Derek Jacobi. An increasingly scarce title to find in any collectible condition.
