"I am sorry for not having attended the performance of Fiamma. I offer my sincere congratulations on the success that has crowned [your] noble endeavor. "Edges very lightly browned; minor remnants of adhesive to corners of blank verso; envelope slighlty worn.Together with a vintage bust-length photograph of a youngish Mascagni in profile. Ca. 206 x 127 mm. Slightly worn; minor remnants of adhesive to blank verso. La fiamma (1931-3), Respighi's "last and most frequently performed large-scale opera," was first performed at the Opera in Rome on January 23, 1934. John C.G. Waterhouse, et al. in Grove Music Online.Mascagni, distinguished as both a composer and conductor, is perhaps best-known for his opera Cavalleria rusticana, which "was enormously successful from its first performance at the Costanzi in Rome in 1890. From then on Mascagni spent the rest of his long career treating a wide variety of subjects. His next opera, L'amico Fritz (1891), consolidated his success with Roman audiences, and revealed his lyrical vein. This fluent rustic comedy was successful particularly because melodic vitality - the outstanding merit of Cavalleria - was combined with a more elegant harmonic idiom."

The Old Fashioned Way (Archive including corrected draft screenplay, final screenplay, and signed writer's agreement for the 1934 film)

Los Angeles: Paramount, 1934. Archive for the 1934 film, including a Draft script with holograph corrections, the resulting mimeograph Final script, and signed "Certificate of Authorship," Certificate of Authorship notarized by the County of Los Angeles and signed by each of the film's writers, including J.P. McEvoy, Claude Binyon, Garnett Weston, Lex Neal, Walter DeLeon, Paul Jones, and Ralph Ceder. Based on the story by Charles Bogle (a W.C. Fields pseudonym), "The Old Fashioned Way" follows the story of The Great McGonigle (W.C. Fields) and his rag-tag vaudeville troupe's production of "The Drunkard," a William H. Smith temperance play, as well as the wayward romantic exploits of McGonigle's daugther, Betty. A rare and comedic glimpse into the life of a vaudevillian at the turn of the century, "The Old Fashioned Way" is also somewhat autobiographical in nature. Like McGonigle, Fields himself began his career in vaudeville as a silent juggler, eventually earning the distinction of "world's greatest juggler" and an illustrious career in both silent and early "talkie" films. Fields' "The Great McGonigle" is of course an homage to the famed "The Great Ziegfeld" or Florenz Ziegfeld, Jr., a noted impresario of his time and a key player in vaudeville history. Draft script: Self wrappers. Title page integral with front wrapper. 178 leaves, with last leaf of text numbered 135.         Winged Victory

London: Jonathan Cape,, 1934. Octavo. Original blue cloth, silver lettered spine and front cover, top edges blue. With the dust jacket. Very slight soiling to jacket, touch of foxing to fore-edge, 11cm slight cut across back of jacket somewhat affecting cloth beneath. Still a very nice copy in very good condition. First edition, first impression, an exemplary copy of what is widely regarded as one of the most realistic and moving accounts of aerial combat in World War I. "One of the best first-hand descriptions of a pilot's life at this time can be found in Winged Victory by Victor Yeates, who at that time was a lieutenant flying Sopwith Camel single-seater fighters with No. 46 Squadron from Le Hameau airfield just behind Arras. Yeates completed a seven-month spell of operational flying, which included the March Offensive, and made 163 operational flights totalling 248 hours. He crashed four times - twice shot down by German fire and twice accidentally. His book, nominally fiction, is recognised as being an authentic account of his time with No. 46 Squadron, and it vividly describes the strain of low-level flying over the battlefield and engaging German infantry with bombs and machine-guns during the course of the German spring offensive. Yeates died from tuberculosis, brought on by the strain of his wartime flying, in 1934, the year his book was first published" (Martin Middlebrook, The Kaiser's Battle, p. 281).

Document signed, with photo signed, both by Hitler.

Folio. Berlin: September 21, 1934. Folio, 11 1/2 x 8 1/4 inches, embossed with the Nazi eagle seal. With a photo of Hitler also signed, standing with three military officers (perhaps two being those in the document). The document is headed “In Namen des Reichs” and is signed at a turning point in Nazi history by the ruthless and virulently anti-Semitic war minister and Army Commander-in-chief Werner von Blomberg, whose career ended in scandal, and General Werner von Fritsch who was also linked to Blomberg in the so-called Blomberg-Fritsch Affair in which Göring slandered both men in order to end their careers which threatened his. The document grants permission to Generalleutnant Oskar von Beneckendorff und von Hindenburg, the politically powerful son and aide-de-camp to Field Marshal and President of Germany Paul von Hindenburg who appointed Hitler Chancellor, to assume the title and uniform of Generalmajor for three months from October 1st to December 31st 1934. In August 1934, Hindenburg had engineered the merging of the offices of President and Chancellor into one for Hitler. Although there is debate, Hindenburg may have been the person most instrumental in Hitler’s rise to power. This document unites four of the most famous Nazis in one moment in time.         Film Art: Review of the Advance-Guard Cinema (Complete run of the first 9 issues, including the first issue under the aborted title, "Film")

London: Self published, 1934. First Edition. First Edition. The first nine issues seminal film review magazine, focusing on avant-garde and international cinema. The first issue of the journal was simply titled "Film" and was published in spring 1933, but the John Stuart Film Club had already published a member magazine under the same title. The journal was renamed "Film Art," and began a numbered quarterly run in summer 1933, beginning with new Issue number 1. Published in the wake of the highly influential "Close Up" magazine, "Film Art" kept the flame lit as an important UK literary and film periodical, a few of the editors contributing most of the material, and a handful of others filling the gaps. The magazine was not opposed to completely ignoring the general public's view of cinema, and the editor, B. Vivian Braun (director of the 1934 short, "Beyond This Open Road"), centered much of the content on international cinema, particularly Soviet, French, and German. Articles on surrealism, directors V. I. Pudovkin, G. W. Pabst, S. M. Eisenstein, and Paul Rotha, book reviews, and black-and-white photographs, made this publication and it's often "underground" content accessible and relevant to an otherwise sheltered mass audience. 7.5 x 9.5 inches, saddle-stitched. All volumes Very Good plus, with light toning and faint creases, and a brief notation on the front wrapper of the Spring 1933 issue ("Film").

The Return of Chandu [the Magician] (Original Pressbook)

Los Angeles: Sol Lesser Productions / Principal Distributing Corporation, 1934. Original pressbook for the 1934 film. This feature was not only composed by editing together the first 4 chapters of the same-titled 12-chapter serial (the last 8 chapters were released as "Chandu on Magic Island" in 1935), but in this case the episodes were specifically written so that, spliced together, the result had the pacing and dialogue of a standard 60-70 minute second feature. Producer Sol Lesser developed this approach so that this film could be marketed either as a free-standing feature, as a feature-length first episode, with no loss of continuity or resolution in either case. Alternatively the source serial could be booked in the traditional 12-chapter format. A striking and, in our experience, unique format wherein the 3-color card wrappers open at the center to reveal two separate supplements, Advertising and Publicity. 11 x 17 inches, oversize, 24 pages. Very Good plus condition, quite clean, with some splitting to the edges of the wrappers and a single horizontal fold to each of the two supplements.

        Tender is the Night.

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons,, 1934. A Romance. Decorations by Edward Shenton. Octavo. Original green cloth, titles to spine gilt. Slight mottling to the cloth, but a very good copy. First edition, first printing. Signed by the author on the front free endpaper. Tender is the Night, which Fitzgerald was hoping would redeem his sagging literary reputation, not to mention his dire financial straits, was a commercial failure and despite being regarded by many now to be Fitzgerald's true masterpiece, its critical reception was tepid at best. With the small label of the booksellers, Hochschild, Kohn, of Baltimore, to the rear pastedown. This enterprising concern, on learning of Fitzgerald's presence in their town, dispatched an employee together with 25 copies of Tender is the Night which the by-then neglected author had agreed to sign. The bookshop assistant returned with just 19 copies, having apparently been "taxed" half a dozen by the great author. This is almost certainly one of those 19 copies.
