The Hand Press : An Essay Written and Printed by Hand for the Society of Typographical Arts, Chicago, by H D C Pepler, Printer, Founder of St Dominic's Press

H D C Pepler, Printer / St. Dominic's Press, Ditchling Common 1934 - 1" front spine edge tear at tail, two 1/2" tears at spine head edges, corner wear, light tone to wrap-around label, unopened pages, otherwise light wear. Solid paperback wraps.; Colophon: Imprint: Printed by H D C & mark Pepler on a Stanhope Press; Type, Caslon Old Face; Paper, John Batchelor & Son; Completed on the Feast of the Assumption when men should abstain from servile work. Edition, limited to 250 copies of which this is No 173; [signed] H D C Pepler. "Harry Douglas Clark Pepler (1878–1951), known as Hilary Pepler, was an English printer, writer and poet. He was an associate of both Eric Gill and G. K. Chesterton, working on publications in which they had an interest. He was also a founder with Gill and Desmond Chute in 1920 of a Catholic community of craftsmen at Ditchling, Sussex, that took the name The Guild of St Joseph and St Dominic." - Wikipedia. Illustrations reproduced from the St Dominic's Press include three by Eric Gill. Evan Gill; Eric Gill : A Bibliography; 500. "Mr. Pepler's essay is persuasively, entertainingly, and gracefully written. It is a personal record of the process and feelings which led him, in 1916, to set up as printer in a Ditchling stable that had been recently occupied as a mason's yard by Eric Gill and Joseph Cribb. There were books he wanted to produce —books concerning faith and handicraft. 'Moreover, in my ignorance, I thought that any fool could print.' So the St. Dominic's Press was born." - A J A Symons, The Book-Collector's Quarterly, Vol 5, Issue 1, Page 24. An outstanding memoir of the Fine Press movement, with Eric Gill illustrations. ; 79 pages [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

La Castrazioni dei Delinquenti Sessuali, Pisa, 1934

1934. The Castration of Sexual Delinquents [Manuscript]. Goldberg, Erico [Erik]. La Castrazioni dei Delinquenti Sessuali. Pisa, July, 1934. [ii], 167 ff. Carbon-paper copy of typescript bound into contemporary three-quarter cloth over patterned paper, calf lettering piece to spine. Light soiling, front joint just starting at head, corners bumped. Moderate toning, numerous penciled corrections and annotations to versos of 31 leaves, presumably in the author's hand. $750. * This thesis on the "castration of sexual delinquents" was presented by Dr. Goldberg to the Institute of Legal Medicine of the University of Pisa, most likely for a Dottore di Ricerca, a secondary thesis that is a prerequisite for a professorship in Italy. The thesis, which discusses the laws of several Continental European counties, Great Britain, the United States and Canada, was produced at a time when Nazi Germany and Fascist Italy were exploring the usefulness of sterilization to further their political and racial goals.         18 Poems

London: The Sunday Referee and The Parton Bookshop,, 1934. Octavo. Original black cloth, titles to spine gilt. With the dust jacket. Extremities rubbed, spine dulled as usual, faint spotting to edges and endpapers. A very good copy in a good jacket, lightly soiled with loss to corners and ends, but intact with no repair. First edition, first impression, of the author's first collection, a poetic association copy with the ownership inscription of Wilfrid Wilson Gibson (1878-1962), founder of Dymock Poets group and a friend of Rupert Brooke. Though Gibson was several generations older than Dylan Thomas, he outlived him by a decade. From an edition of 500 copies, this is one of the 250 copies from the second issue, bound up about a year after the first issue (Dec 1934) and distributed 21 February 1936. The second issue has the rounded spine, trimmed fore-edge, the original 1934 issue date omitted from the title page, the 3/6 price crossed through on the dust jacket (making this a first issue jacket with the price corrected to the second issue price) and the extra Parton Press advertisement leaf tipped in between the half-title and the title-page.

        Pilgrimage to Mecca

1934 - First edition. 19 half-tone illustrations, a full-page map in the text. 8vo. Very good in the original green cloth. xvii, 260pp. London, John Murray, This copy is inscribed in ink on the front free endpaper - ?To Dulcie - remembering that it was she who first suggested my visit to Arabia - from the Author.? After spending her childhood holidays in North Africa (specifically, Libya) Lady Evelyn became fascinated with the Muslim way of life and eventually converted to Islam. This book recounts her pilgrimage to Mecca, which she made in 1933 at the age of 65. ?It is a valuable record of the hajj . We do not forget that the author is a Lady - she stays with the distinguished St John Philbys in Jeddah and travels to Mecca in a large limousine with chilled chicken and soda-water in a hamper at the back - but the picture she gives of the experience is unelaborate and revealing, and detailed enough to serve as a guidebook as well as a travel account.? (p.41, Robinson, Wayward Women, Oxford University Press, 1990). Lady Evelyn (then, Zainab Cobbold) died in 1963 and was buried on a hillside on her estate in Wester Ross. 'Her splendidly Islamo-Caledonian interment symbolised her two worlds: a piper played MacCrimmon's Lament, while the Surah ?Light? from the Qur'an was recited in Arabic.' (Facey, From Mayfair to Mecca, Guardian, 19 May 2008). [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        DER JUDE ALS RASSESCHÄNDER

Berlin-Schöneberg, Ns-Druck Und Verlag(1934). 1st edition. Original illustrated paper wrappers with terrible Antisemitic image, 8vo, 109 pages. 15 x 21 cm. Includes 28 brutally Antisemitic Fips illustrations. In German. Title translates as, "The Jew as Race Defiler. " Extremely anti-Semitic book published by Julius Streicher through the Nazi Press in Berlin. Various auction houses have described this work as "Possibly the most virulent anti-Semitic publication created during the Third Reich, " with graphic images including caricatures of Jews leering at "Aryan" women (one being crucified and whipped) , Jews spitting upon non-Jews, Jews clutching at innocent women, etc. Chapters cover such topics as how Jews see themselves, teachings of the Talmud, Jewish law, Jewish trade in women, and the need to punish and jail Jews. With the "subtitle; 'An accusation of Judah and a reminder to German women and girls', [this work] leaves no room for doubt that the book expounds upon the purported sexual predator tendencies of all Jewish men towards non-Jewish women. The book comprises caricatures drawn by the regular cartoonist of 'Der Stürmer', Philip Rupprecht [aka "Fips"], that depict Jewish men as lascivious lechers bent on corrupting German women, and consequently, the racial purity of the German race. Rupprecht was sentenced to 6 years of hard labor in 1945 at the Nuremberg war crimes trial" (Museum of World War II, 2017) . The illustrations are captioned with such tags as, (here translated) : "The Jew Otto Mayer from Nuremberg: he made a wooden cross on which he tied naked (Aryan) victims. He raped them as soon as the blood started to flow; " "Racial study in the subway - two races - two worlds! " "The Jewish "Artist", expecting to get paid with Sex; " "According to the Talmud the wife of a Jew can't say or do anything if a Jew has an encounter with a non-Jew in his house; " etc. SUBJECT(S) : Race defilement (Nuremberg Laws of 1935) Judaism -- Controversial literature. Antisemitism -- Germany. Jews. Institutional stamp on title page, which has some damage. Original covers rebacked with archival paper for stabilization, lacks spine, with a bit of loss to the left side of the cover impacting the first letters of the words in the title (see illustration) and outer corners showing some loss as well. Internally very good condition. When the cover is in prime condition, this book sells for double this price. (holo2-138-20)

Erfurt, Verlag Kurt Stenger, 1934. (noch zu Nr. 27034) . .
