        Portrait photograph of Pavel Tchelitchew

1934. 1 vols. 9-15/16 x 6-3/4 inches. Atelier stamped on verso: Photograph by Carl Van Vechten/146 Central Park West/Cannot be reproduced without permission. Holograph notations in ink giving the subject of the photograph and the number of the negative. 1 vols. 9-15/16 x 6-3/4 inches. Russian Surrealist Painter, (1898-1957) Tchelitchew was part of the "homosexual wing" of the international avant-garde between the wars, and much of his work is infused with "psychosexual conflict and homoerotic longing," according to Duncan. Tchelitchew and his work were despised by Surrealism's self-appointed pope and author of the Surrealist Manifesto, André Breton, an infamous homophobe. Breton condemned Tchelitchew's art for being too visceral. Indeed, it is an apt description of the artist's representations of the grotesque, inspired by his fascination with circus "freaks," fostered largely in part by his visits to a 14th Street freak show in Manhattan.

        Appointment in Samarra.

Harcourt, Brace and Company, New York 1934 - First edition. Octavo, original cloth. Fine with a contemporary bookplate to the inner gutter, in the first issue dust jacket with a few small closed tears and general wear. A very nice example. One of the great novels of small-town American life, Appointment in Samarra is John O'Hara's crowning achievement. In December 1930, just before Christmas, the Gibbsville, Pennsylvania, social circuit is electrified with parties and dances. At the center of the social elite stand Julian and Caroline English. But in one rash moment born inside a highball glass, Julian breaks with polite society and begins a rapid descent toward self-destruction. Brimming with wealth and privilege, jealousy and infidelity, O'Hara's iconic first novel is an unflinching look at the dark side of the American dream--and a lasting testament to the keen social intelligence if a major American writer. "[O'Hara] is the only American writer to whom America presents itself as a social scene in the way it once presented itself to Henry James, or France to Proust" (Lionel Trilling, The New York Times). Chosen by Modern Library as one of 100 greatest novels of the twentieth century. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Archive of correspondence and documents; from his Campaigns for a California Judgeship

Los Angeles, 1934. Generally fine, with occasional small tears, paper-clip impressions, and pinholes. 60+ pages, with additional printed and handwritten documents, various sizes and formats. Leo Gallagher (1887-1963) was an attorney, activist, and a hero to the labor movement. Starting in the 1920s, he was associated with the IWW and joined the International Labor Defense, the major organization - sponsored by the Communist party - for the defense of political and labor activists. In that capacity, Gallagher defended striking dockworkers and the San Francisco labor leader Tom Mooney. In 1933, he went to Germany with an ILD team to defend the Communist party member who was framed for the burning of the Reichstag. Gallagher entered the political fray several times. This archive documents his first two campaigns, first for a Municipal Court judgeship in Los Angeles, and then for a State Supreme Court seat. It contains typescript press releases, including endorsements from Theodore Dreiser and a variety of unions and activist organizations; draft articles for publication; carbons of correspondence between Gallagher and Upton Sinclair, who was running for Governor at the time, in which they spar over endorsing each other; campaign committee reports; copies of legal filings; original correspondence from prominent supporter, the writer Charles Erskine Scott Wood; transcriptions of radio interview questions and answers, along with planning documents for the interviews; printed and mimeograph campaign literature, flyers, briefings for union members and other supporters; lists of expenditures and original receipts for campaign expenses. The archive was assembled by the journalist, pamphleteer, and activist John M. Weatherwax, who was active in the campaign.

        PHOTOGRAPHS 1920-1934.

Hartford, Connecticut & Paris (New York on verso): James Thrall Soby & Cahiers d'Art, 1934. : , 1934. First edition - Man Ray's first monograph and a landmark photography book (cited in Roth's 101 Books.) INSCRIBED and SIGNED on the title page. 'for Evelyn, who would have been in this if I had known her then. Man Ray, Paris, 1956, Contains 104 images, mostly gravure reproductions of his stunning photographs, but also some rayographs and a portrait of Man Ray by Picasso, done especially for this book. The photographs include striking portraits of James Joyce, Salvador Dali, Matisse, Le Corvusier, DuChamp, Picasso, Braque, Derain, and many other of the leading artists of the century. Texts by Andre Breton, Paul Eluard, Rrose Selavy, and Tristan Tzara precede each section. This is the second issue with the cancel title with the fictitious statement "second edition" (although in this copy the French language version of the title page is facing front and the English is on the verso): the publisher "attempted to generate demand where none existed by suggesting the edition had sold out. copies with the original title page are exceedingly rare" (Roth, 101 Books). Evelyn was Evelyn Dawson, wife - during the 1940's - of the photographer James Fitzsimmons (in 1948 both Fitzsimmons and Man Ray were represented at a photography show at the Los Angeles County Museum), who was friendly with Man Ray and his wife Juliet during the years that they lived in Hollywood, and who herself modeled occasionally for Man Ray. In the original comb-bound stiff color photo-pictorial wrappers. Quarto. Very minor wear to the edges of the cover, some light toning to the back cover, but overall an outstanding copy of an incredible book .

Inscribed by the author on the title page: "For Christopher Lee / Who gave such a magnificent performance as de Richleau in the film of the story / from Dennis." Scattered foxing to text edges, else very Near Fine, with the cloth exceptionally bright and clean. Dustjacket is gently spine-sunned, worn along upper edge and lower front joint, with small nicks, short tears, and shallow chips to same, the worst of these affecting the 'D' in 'Dennis' and most of the lettering in the author's last name on the front panel; 7'6 net price on spine; small label stating "Black Magic Story / Recommended by the Book Guild" applied to right edge of front panel; partial wraparound band present from The Crime Book Society; unrestored, Very Good+. Housed in a custom quarter leather clamshell case by the Chelsea Bindery. Laid into this copy is a 1-page typed letter from Wheatley to Christopher Lee, on the author's own stationary - some 130 words; single horizontal fold, else Fine. As great an association as can be imagined between Wheatley and the horror icon who brought his 1934 novel to life more than 30 years later. The novel is set in 1920's London, where two friends, the Duc de Richleau (Christopher Lee) and Rex (Leon Greene) go to the home of their good friend and end up interrupting the meeting of a Satanic cult; the Duc, an expert on the occult, spends the remainder of the novel protecting his friends from cult followers and going head-to-head with the Angel of Death. It is considered by many to be not only Wheatley's best novel of supernatural fiction, but one of the best supernatural thrillers of the 1930's, a decade bursting with novels in that genre. It served as the basis for the 1968 Hammer film, adapted by Richard Matheson, and directed by Terence Fisher. In an October 26, 1967 letter to his fan club president, Gloria Lillibridge, Lee notes: "Author Dennis Wheatley came to see us on the set and told me that he was delighted with the way in which we were making his story...I have high hopes of this film, as it will prove, once and for all, that I can be accepted in a completely normal role" (Johnson, Tom, et al. The Christopher Lee Filmography: All Theatrical Releases, 1948-2003, pp.175-178). The role of Duc proved to be a defining one for Lee, and from the tone of Wheatley's inscription, his admiration for the actor is quite clear. As late as 2015, Lee was rumored to have a huge interest in the occult, and an enormous private library on the subject; Lee relayed the following to an interviewer: "I don't have a huge collection. Somebody wrote I had twenty thousand books (laughter). I would have to live in a bath (extended laughter). I have maybe four or five...I have The Devil Rides Out, first edition, signed to me by Dennis Wheatley." Bleiler (1978 ed.), p.207.

The book is in very good condition, square and tight, with gilt still bright; previous lending library stamps on front end papers, otherwise no markings anywhere. The supplied dust jacket is second issue, with blurbs on the front flap by Mary Colum, Gilbert Seldes and Marjorie Kinnen Rawlings, priced at $2.50. It has light edge wear and creasing, a significant chip at top of spine and smaller ones at base of spine and back panel. In spite of this, the colors are vibrant on the front panel and only modestly dimmed on spine. A rare book in any jacket whatsoever, this one much nicer than usually found, and with no restorations at all. Fitzgerald's late masterpiece, and many consider his finest work.

Housed in a green flat back cloth box by the Chelsea Bindery. A truly exceptional copy, with only the paper band which held instructional envelope to the book lacking. W. W. Denslow illustrations throughout including 8 colour plates. First edition, first state, with publisher's imprint to the spine. A most unusual toy book; the reader was invited to take the die-cut figures and assemble them into three dimensional models which, when placed on the provided sloping runway, would move or "waddle" down on their own. A very scarce Oz title, this is one of very few known copies containing the original waddle figures: Dorothy, Toto, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, the Lion, and the Wizard. Bienvenue p.12 [Attributes: First Edition]
