London: Arthur Baker, 1934. First edition. With fold out genealogical trees of the Imperial family and the royal family of the Herods. 8vo, in the publisher's original gilt lettered black cloth, and in the original dustjacket. 575 pp. A very fine, as pristine copy of the book, in an attractive jacket with some light general mellowing confined primarily to the spine panel. FIRST EDITION, Robert Graves' extremely popular 'autobiography' of Claudius continues (from Claudius' accession after Caligula's death, to his own death in 54) in Claudius the God. This sequel also includes a section written as a biography of Herod Agrippa, contemporary of Claudius and future King of the Jews. This book, combined with Graves' first Claudius novel, was adapted by the BBC into the award-winning television serial, I, Claudius.

Archive of 89 photographs from various Pre-Code films starring Julie Bishop [Jacqueline Wells], 1933-1934

Various cities: Various Publishers, 1934. Archive of 89 photographs belonging to actress Julie Bishop, featuring film still and publicity photographs from five Pre-Code films made in 1933 and 1934 while she was still being credited under her birth name, Jacqueline Wells. The photographs have been tipped into a contemporary photo album, with the exception of three photographs, which are laid in. Bishop began working in silent films as a child actress, and appeared in over 50 B-pictures and serials for Universal, Paramount, and others through the 1930s as Jacqueline Wells. A 1941 studio contract would necessitate a change to the name she became better known as, as Warner Bros. didn't want their new star associated with the low budget pictures in her past. She made 16 films for Warner Bros., and continued to find work through the 1950s, a career that lasted over 30 years. Roughly half the photographs in the archive are from 1933's "Tarzan the Fearless" film serial, which she costarred in with Buster Crabbe, including 11 behind the scenes photographs, five of which show Tarzan creator Edgar Rice Burroughs during a visit to the set. One of these photographs has been inscribed to Bishop by producer Sol Lesser. Other films featured in the archive include the W.C. Fields starring "Tillie and Gus" (Paramount, 1933), "The Loudspeaker" (Monogram, 1934), one of which is laid in and contains a holograph ink note by Bishop to an unknown recipient mentioning her costar Ray Walker and that the film's theme song, "Who, But You?," was being performed by Bing Crosby and Guy Lombardo, "Alice in Wonderland" (Paramount, 1933), although it appears her role was cut from the final film, and the film serial "Clancy of the Mounted" (Universal, 1933), several of which show images from the final six chapters of the series, considered lost, the first six chapters having been released on DVD in 2012. Photographs 8 x 10 inches (20 x 25 cm). Some with bruising or light chipping, generally about Near Fine. Photo album 13.25 x 10.25 inches (33 x 26 cm), bound with a string binding. Very Good plus.

        The Rock.

London: Faber & Faber Limited,, 1934. A pagent play written for performance at Sadler's Wells Theatre 28 May ? 9 June 1934 on behalf of the forty-five churches fund of the Diocese of London. Octavo. Original white blue-speckled paper over boards, spine lettered in blue. With the dust jacket. Small closed tear to top of jacket rear panel, a few trivial marks, otherwise a fine copy. First edition, first impression, a superb copy. One the earlier of Eliot's works to be more-or-less dominated by Christian doctrine (and created in collaboration with a veritable synod of churchmen), The Rock envisages the modern era with Eliot's characteristic brand of scornfully sweeping bitterness - "The Church disowned, the tower overthrown, the bells upturned, what have we to do / but stand with empty hands and palms turned upwards / in an age which advances progressively backwards?" One of 1000 copies issued in the trade binding.

I, Claudius From the Autobiography of Tiberius Claudius Emperor of the Romans born B C 10 murdered and deified A D 54

London: Arthur Barker, 1934.. FIRST EDITION. Octavo, pp.494. With a folding family tree of the Julio-Claudian dynasty to rear. In publisher's black cloth with gilt titles to spine. With original pictorial dust jacket designed by John Aldridge. Bottom edge untrimmed. Jacket spine lightly sunned, with some light wear and very minor chipping to the top edge. Crisp and clean internally; likely unread. A fine copy of the book in a very good jacket. Arguably the defining piece of Roman historical fiction from the twentieth century, Graves' classic fanciful autobiography of Rome's fourth Emperor builds a tangled web of family feuds and internecine murder from hints provided by Tacitus and Suetonius. The story was dramatised by the BBC in 1976, staring Derek Jacobi, and has since gone on to inspire the tone of the acclaimed series 'Rome' (2005-07). Graves was a gifted classicist at Charterhouse and later Oxford, but decided to pursue literature and poetry after he completed his degree. As well as contributing a translation of Apuleius' 'The Golden Ass' to the Penguin Classics collection, he also published a controversial encyclopaedia of Greek Myths containing some of his own original theories, generally rejected by the academic community.

Typed Letter Signed on "Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute" stationery, 4to, Tuskegee Institute, Alabama, May 10, 1937

About to visit the Ford Motor Plant in Dearborn, Carver writes to his "much appreciated friend, Mr. Tubs," who worked at the Drakeford Greenhouses in Tuskegee. Edward Tubbs, a friend who worked at the Drakeford Greenhouses in Tuskegee, shared Carver's interest in and love of botany. As in other known letters Carver wrote to Tubbs, Carver thanks him for flowers received and mentions other flowers he has, specifically an amaryllis "through flowering now." At the outset, Carver writes that he, "wore the white carnation all day yesterday and it is just as pretty today. I shall wear it more or less all the week…." Carver explains that while he would like to see Tubbs, he has been too busy and informs him that "in about two weeks I shall have to leave for Dearborn, Michigan, Mr. Curtis and myself. We will visit the Ford Plant, and I am to speak on the evening of the 25th. I shall go by Mr. Curtis's home and rush back for commencement." He says that he hopes to see Mr. Tubbs upon his return. Above his typed name he signs, "G. W. Carver." Condition: Folds at center and two vertical folds, on verso and showing through are two light tan stains possible from sunning, else fine. Carver refers here to his visit to Dearborn at the invitation of Henry Ford to speak at the Third Dearborn Conference of Agriculture on "What Chemurgy means to my People." He also refers to his assistant, Mr. Austin Curtis, Jr., who escorted him to Dearborn. Carver and Ford began corresponding via letter in 1934, and their mutual admiration deepened after Carver made a visit to Michigan in 1937, the year of our letter. Carver and Ford worked together to create the field of Chemurgy, a new branch of science to merge agriculture and industry. During Carver's visit to Dearborn in 1937, he spoke at the Conference of Agriculture and a summary of his speech, published in Farm Chemurgic Council Proceedings of the Third Dearborn Conference…, so cited in Henry Ford and his Researchers… by William Shurtleff and Akiko Aoyagi, [page 77] states in part, "soybean was regarded a sort of curiosity… what Chemurgy has done with this bean under the direction of Mr. Ford is truly amazing, and the end is not yet. More things will be made…." The authors note that this is the earliest document seen using the word "Chemurgy" in the title. The Special History Study from the National Park Service website notes that in 1937, Carver attended two Chemurgy conferences, and that he was invited by Henry Ford to speak at the conference in Dearborn where "they developed a friendship." As Carver's health deteriorated, Ford installed an elevator at Tuskegee where Carver lived so that he wouldn't have to walk up and down the stairs. As Douglas Brinkley writes in 'Wheels for the World,' his history of Ford, the automaker donated generously to the Tuskegee Institute, helping finance Carver's experiments, and Carver in turn spent a period of time helping to oversee crops at the Ford Plantation in Ways, Georgia." The article continues, "By the time World War II began, Ford had made repeated journeys to Tuskegee to convince Carver to come to Dearborn and help him develop a synthetic rubber to help compensate for wartime rubber shortages." Eventually, in 1942, they devised a way to make the rubber from goldenrod, a plant weed. The two were kindred spirits in many ways, specifically about working to merge agriculture and industry. This letter appears to be unpublished.

First Edition, ONE OF 55 LARGE-PAPER COPIES, signed by Barber, this being No. 22. 5 color plates, one of them handcolored, and 121 other illustrations. TOGETHER WITH BARBER'S ORIGINAL INK DRAWING FOR THE TITLE PAGE laid in. 1 vols. 4to. With Barber's Drawing for the Title Page. "One of the most important books published by Connett." -- Siegel This is the large paper edition of this work. The regular, trade, edition was published at the same time by Windward House, a sporting press started by Connett in 1933. Both editions used Barber's vignette on the the title page. From this drawing it appears that Connett liked the artist's Windward design and used in it the Derrydale edition: in the margin of the drawing Connett has pencilled "reduce 1/4 inch" and the drawing was photographically reduced to the smaller dimension for the large paper copies. A simplified version of the design was used on the Derrydale edition spine. One of the rarest and most desirable productions of the Derrydale Press, and, by virtue of the drawing, a unique copy.         An African-American Family Photograph Album from “America’s Oldest Negro Community.”

Gouldtown, New Jersey, 1934-1944. This 7” x 11” album contains approximately 85 photographs (most 3.5” x 4.75”) glued to 20 leaves. The photographs are in nice shape; many are captioned. The album cover is well-worn. The first photograph in the album is of a pre-teen boy and titled “Harold L. Valentine, Jr. Dec 25, 1934” in the margin; underneath is a pencil annotation reading, “Me”. Valentine born in 1923, lived in Gouldtown until his death in 1977. Most of the photographs show Valentine’s family and home, the family’s goats, horses, and chicken houses, family vehicles, a man and woman playing guitars, Valentine's father in his white “Coca-Cola” uniform, and other views of the area. Valentine served as a Tech Sergeant in the Army Air Force during World War II, and many of the final 30 photographs in the album show African-American men in uniform at home and at a military base. This is an important visual record of mid-20th century African-American life in one of the most historic African-American enclaves. Gouldtown, which is located about 60 miles south of Philadelphia, was christened “America’s Oldest Negro Community” by Ebony magazine in 1952. It traces its roots to the 1700s when a freedman, named Benjamin Gould, married the granddaughter of wealthy English nobleman, John Fenwick, who had settled in America. Community lore holds that in the mid-1700s two mixed-race brothers, who were previously indentured servants, arrived from the West Indies, settled near the Goulds and began families of their own after purchasing the passage of two ‘mail-order-brides’ from the Netherlands. Shortly thereafter, a mixed-race couple (white and Native American) arrived from Cape May. It was descendants of these four families that formed the core of Gouldtown’s population well into the latter half of 20th century.

Collection of seven daily calendar journals kept by a Los Angeles Policewoman

Los Angeles, 1934-1955. Seven daily calendars (approximately 5.5” x 8”) kept by Los Angeles Policewoman Sidney A. Ball between the years 1934 and 1955. Some calendars have more content than others; overall about 20% of the pages have entries. A number of newspaper clippings, notes, and department forms are attached or laid-in. The spine covering for 1955 is missing. All have some wear and soiling. Most of the entries in Ball’s daily calendars concern routine events, lists of officers and inspectors, lunch and dinner engagements, contacts, addresses, parties, opera and theater dates (“Oklahoma!”), Hollywood Bowl concerts, staff birthdays, attorney meetings, retirements, movies (Grauman’s Chinese and Egyptian), police functions, books (Alinsky’s Reveille for Radicals), an Admiral Byrd lecture (“He has penguins with him.”), vehicles and license plate numbers, trips (Acapulco, Death Valley, Alaska, Michigan, Canada, New England), recipes, Mexico shopping lists, etc. However, several multi-page entries in some of the calendars appear to be course notes, perhaps from the ground-breaking classes specifically for policewomen provided by the University of California at Los Angeles, and many entries relate to Ball's police work. The entries made while Ball was working at the jail or with vice are quite telling about her job; simultaneously humorous and depressing. Here are a few of them: * 17 Jan 1937 – “Ed. Threw snowball at motorcycle officer – I take blame.” * 2 Jul 1946 – “74 men killed in line of duty – no pension . . . Just what is the protection offered for our $5.80?” * 31 Jan 1947 – “Tonight we booked a mean old Irish Biddy – who told me I looked like a mean old Bull-dog – later when I went close to where she was she said Say, There’s going to be a dog show in Glendale on Sunday. Wish I could enter you.” * 10 Mar 1947 – “Drunk arrested accused of Prostitution denied charge – ‘I only tricks with my Boy Friend he takes Five tricks a day and gives me $10.00’” * 19 Apr 1947 = “D.T. in drunk tank There is a man in tree who just shot an arrow at me – There he is an indian he had a feather in his hair.” * 8 Jan 1950 – “Came in with 25 good rings – 7 w.m. watches some diamond incrusted + 5 of the rings must have cost around 1000.00 – married to Colonel N. . . . living with 3 men off E. 5th Children locked in garage set fire with candles” * 23 Feb 1950 – “Mamie Floyd came in with . . . long blade knife – White handle. Mamie said knife was hers She carried it to kill man who killed her Bro – No one could mess with her blood” * 19 Aug 1950 – “She was Samoan – Had been a dancer – even when drunk walked with a graceful elegance – Had a proud look – verging on a sneer – But corrupt language & a fighter when drunk. Narco-Mainliner . . . Brilliant became user thru illness” * 16 Nov 1950 – “Richardson, Nellie Bk Very nasty with p/w Smith when being booked – Kept calling her “nigger’ take hands off me – what they would do to her in South – Pled with her to behave – Miss Smith never said anything in return . . . claimed Smith broke her arm – went to X-Ray following day 1015a – Negative!” * 14 Dec 1954 – “Wo prisoner bit finger off. Found by trusty who went to clean-up stepped on finger.” * 10 Feb 1955 – “I’m glad you officers caught me and got here when you did this man was about to ride me to death.” “Yes, I’m married but here on a visit and wanted to try a strange piece.” This is a fascinating record providing insight into the life of an early female professional in a career-field dominated by men. Sergeant Ball, who retired with over 35 years of service in 1965, was one of very few female officers when she joined the Los Angeles Police in 1929. Although women had served as jail matrons or in specialized social-work-type positions in other forces, the Los Angeles Police Department became the first department to routinely employ policewomen with powers of arrest when in 1910, it swore in Alice Wells and assigned her badge number “1”. By 1937, the department employed 39 policewomen; one was Sidney A. Ball (nee Kirkpatrick and later Retzer)

1934 - HECKSCHER, Eli F. Mercantilism. London: George Allen & Unwin, (1934). Octavo, original green cloth, original dust jackets. $2200.First edition in English of this economic history of Europe from the 16th to the 18th century focusing on identifying the key characteristics of mercantilism, translated by Mendel Shapiro, in original dust jackets. One of the great classics of economic history, Mercantilism explores the role of mercantilist ideas in Europe over two centuries. Though Heckscher acknowledges the problems with setting forth a strict definition for mercantilism, he succeeds in laying out a set of mercantilism's fundamental characteristics. Today, mercantilism is largely regarded as a system of economic nationalism meant to create wealthy nations by reducing imports and increasing exports""a system often leading to global imbalances and war. While for much of the 20th century Heckscher's work was ignored due to concerns about the rise of the far left, its relevance is again clear as new concerns emerge about power imbalances with regard to a totalitarian right. Heckscher, writing as fascist governments were gaining power all over Europe, offers important insight into the economic conditions that lead""and have always led""to great danger in Europe and, indeed, worldwide. His analysis of 16th to 18th century Europe was meant to be relevant in the tumultuous political and economic environment that marked 1934, but it is no less relevant today. First published in Swedish in 1931. This first edition in English was prepared from the German edition and was revised by the author. Books fine, price-clipped dust jackets with light wear and toning to extremities. A near-fine copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
