        [ILLUSTRATIONS BY YURY ANNENKOV] Miydodir

Kharkiv: DITVIDAV, 1934. [24] pp.: ill. 29,5x22,5 cm. In original illustrated wrappers. Some pages are in the wrong order. Tear of the few pages. Otherwise a very good/near fine copy. Very rare. Famous poem for children by Korney Chukovsky about a magical creature by the name Moydodyr (literally «Wash 'til Holes»). In Ukrainian, translated by M. Rilsky. The poem is about a small boy who doesn't want to wash. His toys and clothes magically left him, and suddenly an anthropomorphic washstand appeared - Moydodyr - who was a chief of all soap bars and sponges and eventually made him take a bath. The poem ends with a moralistic not on the virtue of hygiene. In 'Moydodyr' and 'Fedorino Gore' Chukovsky half-mockingly used light parody on Mayakovsky's futuristic texts. The very idea of «riot of things» came from Mayakovsky, and only in 'Moydodyr' Chukovsky used Mayakovsky's 'staircase'. Illustrated by Yury Annenkov (1889-1974), Russian artist mostly known for book illustrations and portraits; prominent figure of Russian avant-garde. He was the first illustrator of this tale (1923) and created set of illustrations, even depicted himself and the author on one illustration. This set was used regularly by different Soviet publishers even after the artist emigrated. Worldcat locates no copies.

[SOVIET THEATRE] Teatr i dramaturgiya: Ezhemesiachnyi obshchestvenno-politicheskii i khudozhestvennyi zhurnal teatra i dramaturgii [i.e. Theatre and Dramaturgy: Monthly Political and Art Magazine on Theatre and Drama]

Moscow, 1934. #1-12. 29,5x21 cm (case 31x22,5 cm). Every issue in illustrated publisher's wrappers. In publisher's folder with lettering of the title and year. Near fine. Folder is rubbed and straps are cut off, every issue with Soviet bookshop's stamp on the back cover. The importance of this year run is in the publisher's folder - usually they don't survive to our day. Each issue one of 5000 copies. In the beginning of 1930s the new era came for Soviet theatre. All experimental studios and theatres were closing and only one style - Soviet realism - remained. The growth of the audience led to necessity of creating new 'popular' theatrical magazine. 'Theatre and Dramaturgy' was a Soviet illustrated monthly magazine, printed as 'Soviet Theatre' from 1930 till 1933, as 'Theatre and Dramaturgy' from 1933 till 1936 and 'Theatre' from 1937. The magazine was supposed to form views of readers and be a trendsetter in this area for the whole Soviet Union as it was the time of building Soviet ideology. The magazine was not meant only for professionals, moreover its unusual design and a lot of illustrations were more appealing to a general public. But among all important materials coming from rulers of the state and party, 'Theatre and Dramaturgy' was providing points of view in the beginning, like some of the current issues include reviews and photos of Meyerhold's experimental works in his theatre. Only later the magazine will execute political order of the party, like criticizing same Meyerhold whose theatre and life ended during Stalin terror.

John Dillinger Vintage 1934 Wanted Poster with fingerprint images!

n.p., March 12, 1934. 7.75" x 7.75". "One page small poster, 7.75"" x 7.75"", issued by the U.S. Department of Justice, Division of Investigation wanted poster dated March 12, 1934, with Dillinger's fingerprints, physical description, and mug shots. The verso containing details about the Special Agents in charge and their phone numbers across the country. Near fineA unique, great condition, ""Wanted"" poster for John Dillinger, the bank robber who came to be known as ""Public Enemy Number One"" during his short criminal life.In September 1924, a 21-year-old Dillinger was sent to prison after being nabbed in a botched robbery on an elderly grocer. The young hood spent the next eight and a half years doing time with some of the Midwest’s most hardened convicts and getting a comprehensive education in the tricks of the criminal trade. Only days after winning parole in May 1933, a thoroughly unrehabilitated Dillinger hooked up with an Indianapolis gang and committed a series of grocery store and restaurant stickups. He graduated to bank robbery a few weeks later, kicking off the yearlong crime spree that would make him the nation’s most wanted gangster.Dillinger's exploits saw him cast as a Robin Hood figure amongst the Depression-hit public, with stories surrounding him becoming the stuff of urban legend. when Dillinger robbed the bank at Greencastle, Indiana, he noticed a farmer standing in front of a teller holding some cash. ""Is that your money or the bank's,"" he asked the farmer. The farmer said it was his life savings and that he had just drawn it out. Dillinger, a farm boy from the flatlands of Indiana, said: ""Put it in your pocket. When the newly-elected FDR read about the Greencastle story, he called Hoover and said: ""This man Dillinger is becoming a national hero, a Robin Hood. The press is showing him standing up to the banks that they believe have failed the country. You had better do something about this man, Edgar."" Dillinger’s famous robberies and getaways saw his face splashed across newspapers and newsreels as much as some Hollywood stars. An Indianapolis lottery on when he would be captured proved so popular it had to be shut down, and his father was offered a small fortune to do public speaking engagements. When Dillinger and his gang were arrested in Tucson, Arizona, scores of people filed through the city jailhouse just for the opportunity to lay eyes on the dashing criminal. Businesses even used him as an unsanctioned celebrity endorsement. Upon learning that the car-loving outlaw drove their automobile, one Hudson dealership hung a banner reading, “Dillinger Chooses the 1934 Hudson For His Personal Use.” When the robber later switched to a Ford, the company printed brochures saying, “Will they catch John Dillinger? Not until they get him out of a Ford V8!”A great piece of crime memorabilia! Would look stunning framed. To date, there have been eight film adaptations of Dillinger's life."

Konvolut: Liebe. Tonio Kröger-Illustrator Erich M. Simon u.

[Medaon. Magazin für jüdisches Leben und Forschung.] - In "Die Reklame. - "Erich M. Simon: Publicity, lettering, illustrations. Born 12 April 1892 in Kolberg (now Kolobrzeg, Poland). Studied at the school attached to the museum of industrial arts, Berlin: a teacher was Emil Orlik. 1911, 1913: studied in Paris. Designed books for publishers including S. Fischer, Georg Müller, G. Kiepenheuer, Erich Reiss."

On super-novae,? pp. 6; ibid., ?Cosmic rays from super-novae,? pp. 5. Two papers contained in a single offprint from Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Vol. 20, No. 5, May 1934.

First editions, separately-paginated offprint issues (journal paginations 254-9 and 259-63), of two of the most prescient papers in the history of astrophysics. “A pair of 1934 papers by Walter Baade and Fritz Zwicky first clearly defined the category of supernovae, with a handful of examples, including the AD 1054 event whose remnant is the Crab nebula. In addition, Baade and Zwicky proposed that supernovae were the main energy source for cosmic rays and that the energy source for supernovae was, in turn, the conversion of a normal star into a neutron star. These are essentially the modern views” (N. S. Hetherington (ed.), <em>Encyclopedia of Cosmology</em> (2014), p. 662). These papers probably also contain the first proposal of the idea of a neutron star, since “the belief that Lev Landau thought of neutron stars very shortly after Chadwick’s discovery [of the neutron, in 1932] rested on an after-dinner talk by Leon Rosenfeld, more than forty years after the event, and falls afoul of records at the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen, which show that Landau had already returned to Russia at the time mentioned by Rosenfeld. It is possible, therefore, that Baade and Zwicky were the inventors of the concept of neutron stars as well as of supernovae and the association between them” (<em>ibid</em>.).</p> <p> </p> <p>In Baade and Zwicky’s own words (p. 5 of the second paper): “With all reserve, we advance the view that a super-nova represents the transition of an ordinary star into a neutron star, consisting mainly of neutrons. Such a star may possess a very small radius and an extremely high density. As neutrons can be packed much more closely than ordinary nuclei and electrons, the ‘gravitational packing’ energy in a cold neutron star may become very large, and, under certain circumstances, may far exceed the ordinary nuclear packing fractions. A neutron star would therefore represent the most stable configuration of matter as such.”</p> <p> </p> <p>“Zwicky spent the next forty years pointing out that this comment had checked out in all essential aspects. However, it was largely ignored until Robert Oppenheimer and George Volkoff worked out the detailed physics of stellar collapse in 1939 without mentioning Zwicky’s research [‘On Massive Neutron Cores,’ <em>Physical Review</em> 55 (1939), 374-382]. Even then, final confirmation had to wait until radio astronomers discovered the extraordinarily dense objects called  ‘pulsars” in 1967 [A. Hewish et al., ‘Observation of a rapidly pulsating radio source,’ <em>Nature</em> 217 (1968), 709-13]” (S. Maurer, ‘Idea man,’ <em>Beam Line</em>, Stanford Linear Accelerator Center 31 (2001), 21-27). The next year Thomas Gold of Cornell University showed that such objects must be rapidly spinning neutron stars produced in supernovas [‘Rotating neutron stars as the origin of pulsating radio sources,’ <em>Nature</em> 218 (1968), 731-2].</p> <p> </p> <p>A brilliant but controversial figure, Zwicky (1898–1974) joined the California Institute of Technology in 1925. He soon became interested in cosmic rays, the origin of which was then a mystery. In a 1931 lecture course at Caltech, Zwicky introduced the term “super-nova” to distinguish the explosion of an entire star from the more common and much less powerful nova, which involved violent and repeated outbursts on the surface of an unstable star. In the same year, Baade (1893-1960) moved to Pasadena to work at the Mount Wilson Observatory. The two men became friends and decided to work on supernovae, work which resulted in the two offered papers.</p> <p> </p> <p>“Their first paper, clearly drafted largely by Baade, outlined the observational distinctions between ordinary novae, which occur at a rate they estimated as about 10 to 30 per year in our Galaxy and M31, with mean absolute magnitude at maximum about -5.8, and range of 3 or 4 magnitudes about it, and supernovae, with absolute magnitude about -13 at maximum, which flare up only one per several hundred years in a typical spiral galaxy. By integrating the light curves of supernovae over time, allowing for the unobserved spectral regions, Baade and Zwicky estimated the total energy released in a supernova outburst as possibly of the order of a stellar rest mass, comparable with the mass of the star itself.</p> <p> </p> <p>“Their second paper, no doubt expressing more of Zwicky’s ideas, put forward the concept that supernovae were the sources of cosmic rays, then a very hot subject in experimental physics, with Millikan one of its leading practitioners. Baade and Zwicky noted that in a supernova explosion a large mass of gas, probably comparable to a stellar mass, was expelled with high velocity, perhaps nearly the velocity of light, and conjectured that this mass contained the incipient cosmic ray particles … Baade and Zwicky further noted that the final, stable configuration of matter would be a neutron star, and that supernovae could represent transitions of stars to this state” (Osterbrock, <em>Walter Baade: A Life in Astrophysics</em> (2001), pp. 58-9).</p> <p> </p> <p>“In the January 19, 1934 edition of the Los Angeles Times, Zwicky was lampooned in an article accompanied by a cartoon entitled “Be Scientific with Ol’ Doc Dabble.” The article scoffed: “Cosmic rays are caused by exploding stars which burn with a fire equal to 100 million suns and then shrivel from 1/2 million mile diameters to little spheres 14 miles thick.” In the polemical introduction to Zwicky’s <em>Catalogue of Selected Compact Galaxies and of Post-Eruptive Galaxies</em>, Zwicky quotes the cartoon and comments: “This, in all modesty, I claim to be one of the most concise triple predictions ever made in science.” It correctly describes, he points out, the nature and origin of cosmic rays, supernovae, and the formation of neutron stars” (<a href="http://www.daviddarling.info/encyclopedia/Z/Zwicky.html">http://www.daviddarling.info/encyclopedia/Z/Zwicky.html</a>).</p> 8vo (257 x 174 mm), pp. [1] 2-6; [1] 2-5 [1:blank], original printed wrappers, a very fine copy.
